[Flexradio] SDR + kitchen sink for trade

2007-10-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have decided to trade my SDR 1K, 100w PA, ATU, 2 meter transverter,
parallel cable, usb cable, external clock kit, delta 44 original and
Tony's version of break out box, cables, Heil Boom PL-2T and SM-2, PR40
, one complete UCB kit, one UBC pcb, one ozy, one Janus (new
built versions not kits), 2 atlas boards, 2 Pinocchio's. This radio only
has a few hours on it, and has 8 months left on the warranty. I have
used it on the Army Mars bands with a g5rv. I am really centered on
emcomms and satellite work, so this setup is not practical for me
anymore. I need an all mode radio/mobile/base ( I prefer Yaesu or
kenwood) that I can deploy with. I also have a Hy-gain crank up 52' with
a heavy fold over base to trade, pictures can be seen at http ke5eup
dot net. I am putting up a 100' tower and I already have a 70' crank up
for emcomm, so this one needs a home, all pulleys and winches work, no
rust, needs new cables.

Why trade? It is just better for me, I am on a fixed income, and would
rater trade than handle the money hassle. I am good on QRZ.

Thanks,
Al

My SDR1k is always connected to HRD. If you have VAC, verify that it is
on for digital modes. If not, give us more info about your setup.

Also install the latest HRD build, at present, 1628.

 Jerry,

Could you be a little more specific on you HRD question. Are you using
DM780 or PSK31 Deluxe? How do you have Virtual Audio Cable configured?
There are several good articles in the Knowledge Base that will help you get
up and running on digital modes.

My particular setup on my FLEX5000A using HRD/DM780 is as follows:

VAC set for 2 cables at a 48000 sample rate. In DM780, the Input (receive)
is set to Virtual Cable 2 In, the output (transmit) is set to Virtual Cable
1 Out. PTT is set to run through HRD using CAT.

 Hope this helps,

[Flexradio] 1K RF Amp Calibration on 160M and 10M?

2007-10-26 Thread Rob Dennison
Hi all,

Ended up with failures on 160M and 10M when I went through my 1K RF amp
calibration. Was using a dummy load attached directly to the rf output
plug on the 1K. Calibration was successful on all bands except the two
mentioned. On those two bands the calibration failed with a gain of 38.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Re: [Flexradio] 11kHz DC noise

2007-10-26 Thread Rob Dennison
Hi Ahti and all,

Ahti, your note arrived just as I finished my investigation into the
SDR1K 11kHz DC noise problem. To keep the chain going, I'll share my
findings via your note.

First, the hump is a sound card only problem. Not applicable to the 5K.
Second there are two causes that can mix together.

For critical discussion here goes...

1. Zero Hz defects in the sound card A/D process. These defects (at
least in the FA-66) are constant magnitude and non additive to the
signal. The hump is masked when the received signal + noise is higher
than the defect noise. (The reverse is also true if the signal + noise
is lower then the hump.) In my FA-66 the magnitude is ~ -100dBm.

In a noisy environment like mine, when the 1K preamp is on, the defect is
quickly masked. The only current way to reduce the hump is to buy the
Atlas/Ozy/Janus combination from TAPR or a nice new 5K. The Ozy/Janus
solution is approximately $300 plus a fair amount of time.

2. A ground loop between sound card and 1K. In my case the hump was
about -80dBm and 2kHz wide. The ground loop noise is additive to the
signal + noise making it quite a nuisance.

It can be easily cured with a Radio Shack 270-054 isolation transformer
and a stereo phono jack to 1/8th inch plug. The isolator goes between the
1K output jack and the sound card audio in.

For fanatics, there is also a two channel EBTECH Hum Eliminator (~$60.)
It's a wide frequency range (70kHz) version of the 270-054. The EBtech
unit will result in a better frequency response at the high end of the
panadapter display.

Note that once I solved the ground loop problem, the zero Hz defects
problem was unmasked, but for now I can live with it...

Comments?

Thanks for letting me ride on your note Ahti.

73's to all

Rob

   Thanks - Jerry

 Jerry,

Some sound cards or SDR-1000/sound card combinations have very low
frequency noise or hum (or even some small DC offset). That causes
 a
hump on the left end of the Panadaptor noise floor (11.025 kHz down
from your reception frequency in the older versions of PowerSDR or
 9
kHz with the new PowerSDR). You may not see it, if your sound card
 has
48 kHz (or lower) sampling frequency, because it is outside your
Panadaptor range. Switch on 96 or 192 kHz sampling, if your sound
 card
can do it, then you may see it.

In most cases this hump is just a cosmetic fault and does not make
 any
harm to your normal bandwidth operation. If you want to get rid of
 the
hump, buy the Flex-5000 or use HPSDR's Janus/Ozy combination with
 the
SDR-1000 to replace the sound card.

Subject: [Flexradio] Heil GM-4 and FLEX-5000A

I have a 5000A in route and am thinking about the inter-connections before
it arrives.

Julius, W2IHY, made up a cable for me to connect my Heil GM-4 boom mike to
the SDR-1000. It included a 1/4 inch plug that plugs directly into the
Presonus Firebox or the FA-66. Are those connections considered balanced or
unbalanced? Is the GM-4 a balanced mike?

The ideal would be to plug the 1/4 inch plug into the rear of the 5000A. I
just did a ring out of the W2IHY cable with an ohm meter and discovered that
the ring connection on the plug is not connected. I guess that means I need
to wire the cable up to the front panel mike connector. If the GM-4 is a
balanced mike, which I am unsure, then it might be possible to rewire the
1/4 inch plug to accommodate a balanced connection.

Does anyone have experience with the GM-4?

Now, John, you know I pay very close attention to what is said in the
reflector since I really have little interest in re-inventing the wheel and
always prefer to let others be a little ahead of me. Thus, given some of the
comments of the last few months there is a 50 amp non-switching power supply
and a dedicated red LED voltmeter right beside the transverters in the Flex
cubby and I am satisfied that under full load the voltage moves less than
two tenths. However, your note about the 13.8 says MUST BE AT LEAST. So
I am curious. Do you have any comments on voltages higher than 13.8?

[Flexradio] Using your Flex via VPN or remote Internet connection

2007-10-26 Thread Harryhahn
How many of you have used your Flex via a remote connection? I have used my
TS-2000 successfully via Go to My PC and Skype. I like the remote powering of
the TS-2000 through the Ham Radio Deluxe. This works well. I am adding a
transistorized power amp to this combo.

What I would like to do is to control my Flex-1000 from the internet. The
challenge has been the audio connection would have to be through analog
connections to the Skype audio. I have tried using the virtual connection
through
the SDR software and it just will not work. This would be the way to do it,
but
you would have to map the PC audio out to the SDR audio in. This is the same
difficulty you have playing back a WAV file on the PC to the SDR.

I am sure someone has done it and that is why I am sending this out to the
group. Also, who knows of a good ethernet remote control (multiple) switch that
I can control the power on my different equipment (and antenna selection).

Thanks
Harry

2007-10-26 Thread FireBrick
I can not key the 5K via the PTT Input on the back of the 5K.

I'm sure I was able to before...
I sometimes use a footswitch to hold ptt in while I'm sending cw in case I
pause and don't want to switch to receive.

the rig will key using Vox, Mox, and cw with break In enabled

It is the same with either PWSDR version
using Beta v1.10.3
or latest svn

I do use vCom and have the PTT Control enabled with a virtual port cableing
of com 9com4

what am I doing wrong?

[Flexradio] ptt is working again

2007-10-26 Thread FireBrick
After powering down the rig and turning off the Power Supply.
A restart returned the PTT footswitch to normal operation, keying the rig in
any mode.

I had shut down PWSDR, and even rebooted the computer, but didn't think of
powering down the radio via the power supply till after I sent the email.

Apparently operating 6 meters (barefoot) is not good...even with HF on ant 1
and the 6 meter antenna on Ant 3.

The GM4 is an unbalanced mic; however, just plug it into the rear Bal In

Re: [Flexradio] ham radio deluxe

2007-10-26 Thread Tim Ellison
 Jerry,

You need to review the VAC KB article again. It is very comprehensive. VAC is
used to route audio in and out of PowerSDR to third-party programs without
having to use additional cables to make an interface. vCom is just a serial
port null modem emulator that will allow CAT commands only to be passed back
and forth from PowerSDR to third-party programs. vCom does not pass any audio
signals. That is the function of VAC

This KB article is specific to MixW, but the concept is the same for all
soundcard program.

Re: [Flexradio] Using your Flex via VPN or remote Internet connection

2007-10-26 Thread Tim Ellison
Harry,

There are several KB articles on what you want to accomplish. You CAN route
audio in and out of PowerSDR using VAC and VoIP software for remote operation.
It does work and many people are doing it. The following article is how to
setup IP Sound with PowerSDR, but the concepts are directly applicable to Skype.

Here are a few articles on how to do remote operation with PowerSDR

Subject: [Flexradio] Using your Flex via VPN or remote Internet connection

How many of you have used your Flex via a remote connection? I have used my
TS-2000 successfully via Go to My PC and Skype. I like the remote powering of
the TS-2000 through the Ham Radio Deluxe. This works well. I am adding a
transistorized power amp to this combo.

What I would like to do is to control my Flex-1000 from the internet. The
challenge has been the audio connection would have to be through analog
connections to the Skype audio. I have tried using the virtual connection
through the SDR software and it just will not work. This would be the way to do
it, but you would have to map the PC audio out to the SDR audio in. This is
the same difficulty you have playing back a WAV file on the PC to the SDR.

I am sure someone has done it and that is why I am sending this out to the
group. Also, who knows of a good ethernet remote control (multiple) switch that
I can control the power on my different equipment (and antenna selection).

Thanks
Harry

[Flexradio] SDR-1K + A/J/O + WinDRM config

2007-10-26 Thread Thompson_Peter
Can anyone offer guidelines on config of WinDRM when using HPSDR A/J/O
instead of a conventional soundcard. I note that the HPSDR stuff is not
recognized as a selectable soundcard (since it really isn't one) in the
WinDRM setup. Perhaps it's just a simple matter of selecting a
different sound card from the available ones and use that sound card in
conjunction with the VAC in and out channels?

Jerry,

VAC (Virtual audio Cable) is needed to tie the SW audio out of HRD
to the audio out of the radio (via SW) .. The other way is to use a
sound card (maybe the computer's built-in) tied to the audio out of
the 1K to the soundcard input and visa-versa..

Hope that helps

[Flexradio] Mac OS X Leopard and Flex 5000

2007-10-26 Thread michael
I just installed a copy of Mac's new OS Leopard. Using Boot Camp I setup XP
Pro to work the Flex 5000. I discovered I could NOT get the driver to talk to
the radio. I then decided to try Vista Premium in place of XP Pro and it
seems to work fine with the 5000 under Leopard's Boot Camp. It is possible
that my XP Pro install was faulty in some way. In checking the 1394 IRQ
assignments I noted that there are 2 devices assigned to the same IRQ in the
device manager of Xp Pro (at #19) . In the case of Vista it would seem that the
1394 firewire port is the only device assigned to interrupt # 19. On the other
hand XP PRO running on a PC also has two devices assigned to interrupt 19 and
it , as we know, has no trouble with the 5000. I am ONLY mentioning this to
ease the suffering of someone else who MAY encounter the same result with
Leopard. Again, my original install of XP Pro in leopard may simply have been
faulty. I will gather my energy ASAP and do a second XP Pro install to verify
if the case I found is universally truly there.

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-1K + A/J/O + WinDRM config

2007-10-26 Thread n3evl
The WinDRM setup instructions at
http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10071 shows the example soundcard
config as:

RxInput: VAC 2
TxOutput: VAC 1
Voice Input: Delta 44 3/4
Voice Output Delta 44 1/2

I assume that in this config, the delta44 is the soundcard being used by the
SDR? I can't use the HPDSR in its place here since it's not an option in
the list. Can this be any available sound card on the system?

If you are talking about using it with the Virtual Audio Cable (VAC)
 program, there is nothing different.

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-1K + A/J/O + WinDRM config

2007-10-26 Thread Mel Whitten
With the 1000, the delta 44 is all you need for WinDRM or
DRMs' dream. No additional sound card is needed unless you
want to use a USB headset (i.e. Logitech 250/350 for) then
just select it for the voice input/output.

I am waiting on delivery of the 5000 before I install the A/J/O for
my SDR1000. However, I believe VAC can still be used
for the RxInput and TxOutput (as used now). Then, I would install
a second sound card (USB or Logitech headset) for Voice Input
and Voice Output since there are no additional inputs/outputs available
like the delta 44 has. WinDRM will recognize up to 8 sound card
appearances.

Re: [Flexradio] 1K RF Amp Calibration on 160M and 10M?

2007-10-26 Thread Rob Dennison
Hi Edwin and everyone,

The (lack of) drive is an interesting point: My calibration settings
seem uniformly lower then the factory settings.

Starting from 160M to 10M here is a comparison of Gain By Band (dB:)
  160 806040302017 151210
Factory: 43.0 48.1 45.5 44.4 45.0 46.6 46.9 42.2 44.7 38.6
AB7CF: 38.0 46.7 45.0 43.4 44.0 43.8 43.2 39.2 47.4 38.0

With the exception of 12 M, my calibration points are all lower then the
factory values. Also the power out is generally more than with then the
factory settings: On 20 Meters Factory: 102 Watts, AB7CF: 106 Watts, on
160 Meters: Factory: 65 Watts, AB7CF 87 Watts and on 10 Meters: Factory
59 Watts, AB7CF 63 Watts.

So in general I'm getting more power out with the custom settings. Could
this mean that my FA-66 drive is lower than the factory drive used for
the initial calibration? If so, how do I change the FA-66 output levels?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
