That is true -- the CATV meter (an SDA 5000) does measure levels in dBmV and at
75 ohms.. I'll poke around and see what I can find out.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Just a heads-up. CATV meters typically measure levels expressed in dBmV.
(dB referenced to 1 millivolt across 75 ohms). We work with dBmW (dB referenced
to 1 milliwat. for us, this parameter is is across 50 ohms. The CATV meter
reading will be a lot different. The difference between the two at 75 ohms is
that 0 dBmV corresponds to -48.75 dBmW across 75 ohms. I'm not sure what the
difference between 75 and 50 ohms will make in the reading. Maybe someone else
can enlighten us on that.

I have a similar problem -- I have heard nothing on 6 meters. I do see a lot

As a quick test I checked to see if I got local TV channel 2 Video 55.25 Mhz

expected. I'm going to see what the signal strength is on CATV meter I have

In your area, you've got channel 3 and you should be able to see the video

This might give you a reality check ..

[Flexradio] FW: Direct I/Q output for CW Skimmer

2008-05-24 Thread Mark Amos
Ed W2RF

Thanks for building in the VAC I/Q output into your branch! I've been using
it this morning, and it's really fun
to watch the contest in progress.

In order to use it I had to make some changes to the the CW Pitch and Audio
IF in CW Skimmer (version 1.1) to get the display to line up with PowerSDR's
panadapter. (Setting them both to 600 seemed to do the trick.)

I used CWU and set the filter to max (0 to hz) in order to maximize the
signal that's sent to CW skimmer. Its
probably a misconception on my part, but I thought that sending raw I/Q to
CW Skimmer would have bypassed the
filter settings, etc. and sent the entire 96K bandwidth to CW Skimmer for
decoding.

Is Hz the maximum window I can send to CW Skimmer? Or is there some
other setting that I'm missing? (I
tried SPEC mode on PowerSDr, but none of the CW signals were readable in
CW Skimmer).

Hi Mack,

If you have a connection to the SVN source repoistory, the version of
PowerSDR in the w2rf branch has a feature called Direct I/Q output,
which works with CW Skimmer in wideband modes.

You can find additonal instructions in the Skimmer help file. Let me
know if you have further problems or questions.

Re: [Flexradio] Direct I/Q output for CW Skimmer

2008-05-24 Thread Ed Russell
Hi Mark,

If VAC output is set up properly Skimmer will process the entire
sampled spectrum of 48, 96, or 192khz. There is no need to do any
special filter setup.

The demod audio continues as normal. For example, while I am
processing 96khz of spectrum into Skimmer, I am running PowerSDR with
200hz filters.

Some users are confused because Skimmer only shows 10-12khz of
bandwidth on the waterfall, depending on how tall your display is. If
you look at the spot list, you will see that it is reading stations
in the whole sampled bandwidth. If you scroll up and down, you will
see their callsigns by the waterfall.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have further problems or
questions.

Re: [Flexradio] Direct I/Q output for CW Skimmer

2008-05-24 Thread Mark Amos
Ed,

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding something... and I appreciate your patience.

When I send the output to VAC as I change modes on PowerSDR, the CW Skimmer
waterfall changes. When I change the filters in PowerSDR, then the
waterfall in CW skimmer only shows signals in a narrow band (as wide as the
filter). No matter what mode I select, scrolling up and down the CW Skimmer
waterfall shows a frequency range of about 20 KHz.

It appears that signals above and below the center frequency on PowerSDR are
reflections of each other.

When I set up VAC, the only WDM that shows up is Windows WDM-KS - should
there be another Windows WDM - maybe that's the problem(?)

Six Meters on the Flex 5000

For those who have complained about 6 meter reception the on the 5K, I
experienced a similar situation. I won't say it was real bad, but it wasn't
quite as good as my old IC-756 Pro II which I sold soon after acquiring the
5K. Checking with a beacon abt 80 miles away, the 5K did not receive the
beacon as well as the Pro II did. Nevertheless, I have worked a number of
stations with the 5K. Sporadic E signals tend to be quite strong so the 5K
should do fine most of the time. However, I wanted to be sure I had the
maximum sensitivity for weak DX. So, I recently installed an ARR GAsFet
preamp. It had a little too much gain to suite me, bringing the noise
background up to abt S-5, so I put an attenuator between the preamp and the
5K and set it to abt 6 dB. Now the noise runs abt S-3 or -105 dBm.

Since the ARR preamp is abt as good as one can do on 6 meters, (at least
good enough for terrestrial work), I now have confidence that I have
adequate receive capability.

The sticky relay on the 5K still happens to me with new firmware, about
every 100 transmissions or so (no pattern). It does happen more often when
 I am
using VOX. I do not know if it happens more often on VOX because of the
constant send/receive transitions that take place, or the fact that there
 is a
higher chance of catching a transients. I have ruled out any transients
 to the
amplifier switching (I noted one flexer had made a remark about that in
 the
past that he only had problems when using the linear amplifier). I have a
 solid
state switching device I designed, external to the Flex 5k that has
absolutely no transients. I do have a theory though that it may be
 occurring when you
are transitioning between T/R at the same time a high RF current is
 present

[Flexradio] 6 meter performance

2008-05-24 Thread Ross Stenberg
Disheartening comments by Joel, W5ZN (although he didn't intend it so...just
honest candor). The Ft-920 is over 10 years old and is on the used market
for about $800 or so. These are not off the wall opinions from just another
crackpot. Check out his credentials on QRZ. I would have hoped for better
raw performance from the SDR-5000. It seems a shame to need to add a custom
preamp to what is touted as a high end HF-6m radio. There are many great
things about this radio, and there are some issues as well. I frankly get
tired of the zealots that defend it with such fervor at times. For what it's
worth, the K3 reflector is just as bad. Just the nature of the beast I
suppose (our kids are always the brightest and our little girl should always
win the pageant).

73 and flame on, the troll, Ross K9COX

I have worked a few stations on six meters, but the Flex 5000 performance
for sensitivity and noise figure on six meters is not up to most other
radios. It certainly is inferior to my Yaesu FT-920.

The noise figure of the Flex 5000 on six meters is about 15 dB. Most people
have added a preamp for six meters. I have not yet done that as most of the
commercial preamps available offer a low noise figure but have around 20+ dB
gain, which is a bit more than you actually need to perk up six meters and
that much gain will impact other parameters. Al Ward and I think something
around 10 dB with a low noise figure would be ideal, but we're still doing
some testing.

[Flexradio] 6 meters

2008-05-24 Thread DaveNancy Ridge
Plil,

I work a station in Ohio (W8IF) daily from my QTH in Southwest Florida, (950
mile path) seven days a week on a schedule. I use an SDR5000, a HB 6 meter
amplifier (1000 watts) and a good 6 meter yagi. I also use an Advance Receiver
Research 6 meter receiver preamp. ($80) With the BNC RX1 IN OUT on the back
of the SDR5000, connection is a snap. There is 12 VDC on the back of the SDR
(Flexwire I/O) for powering the preamp.

I work this path winter and summer using a combination of meteor scatter,
troposphere scatter, ionosphere scatter and sporadic E. The band is not open
99% of the time I work this path.

I have worked 8 countries (TI7, HI3, KP4, PJ4, P43, CO8, H7, VE3, W6) and 12
states in the last 3 day on 6 meters with the SDR5000. 6 meters is my favorite
band and the SDR5000 is a great rig with the panadapter, waterfall, and
superior noise blanks.

You are about 70 miles north of me, so let me know if I can help.

Dave, W9DR, Punta Gorda, Florida

[Flexradio] W2RF PowerSDR I/Q problem

2008-05-24 Thread Mark Amos
Ed,

Thanks for your patience with my W2RF PowerSDR I/Q questions.

All, the problem I reported with Ed's console sending I/Q to CW Skimmer was
a user error. I failed to read the documentation (in CW Skimmer Help) that
clearly states that the W2RF version of the PowerSDR application only
supports direct I/Q with the SDR-5000.

Even with the SDR-1000, CW Skimmer makes a nice band scope (albeit only 10K
at a time.)

[Flexradio] 160 meter arcing

2008-05-24 Thread Joel Harrison

I am experiencing an internal arcing/frying sound from inside the 5000a on
160 meters anytime the RF power gets above 50 watts on any mode. This has
occurred since day on one my 5000. It occurs on all antenna ports and both
of my 160 meter antennas (shunt fed tower and inverted Vee) as well as my
dummy load.

I'm yet to raise the hood to investigate, before I do, any suggestions or
similar experiences?

This problem is ONLY on 160 meters. All other bands are fine with full 100
watts.

[Flexradio] Hearing a very brief bust of audio from adjacent frequency signal when tuning with mouse wheel.

2008-05-24 Thread Robert Cleve
I am hearing a strange phenomenon when tuning with the mouse wheel on my
Flex 5000A with PSDR v1.10.4. While listening on a quiet 20m SSB frequency
for example if I rock the mouse wheel back and forth slowly just one click I
can hear a very brief burst of audio from a relatively strong (S7 or more)
sideband signal that is some 10 or 15 KHz away. This does not seem to occur
when the nearby signal is S6 or less. Has anyone else observed this? Does
anyone have a theory on the possible cause?
