OK. I believe ya

The link to the spreadsheet is:
http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=357

A little background.

This spreadsheet started out as a "brain stimulator exercise" during a
mind numbing extended 6 month stay in Jakarta Indonesia in 2004. (don't
ask). Back then, I was using an AH-4 antenna coupler and it, like the
SGCs do not like wire lengths that are even half wave multiples of the
transmitting frequency. Since the AH-4 can match 160-6m, if you
calculate the wire length of all the 1/2 wavelength points, you get a
bunch of numbers. Furthermore, the wire length is different for loops
and dipoles at the same frequency. A bunch more numbers.

When I was going to get home from Indonesia, I was going to put up a new
antenna for the AH-4, so this is how the spreadsheet came about. This
spreadsheet calculates the 1/2 wavelength (fundamental and harmonics) or
high current point of various wire antennas for all of the ham bands.
These values in feet (or meters depending on the units that the constant
is in) are the ones you are NOT supposed to use with antenna couplers,
like the AH-4, SGC and the CG-3000. I graph these high current points in
a separate spreadsheet. What you are looking for are the "holes" or gaps
in the graph and that is where you are supposed to cut the wire length
to. It is slightly counter intuitive, but it works visually.

After the initial version, I made changes to it while on business trips
out of the country, so each version has the name of the city I was in
when making the change.

There is a help file of sorts that you can access that explains it
somewhat better. It is embedded in the spreadsheet.

It is an Excel 2003 spreadsheet and some of the fields are locked to
prevent it from getting hosed up and to protect my intellectual property
:-)

Finally, the basic disclosure. I don't claim this works and have no
liability from its use. It is "as is", but I use it all the time and it
hasn't failed me. Sending me an e-mail asking me how it works or to use
it, may or may not illicit a response.

I was working on a more complex version that calculated the wire length
based on frequency, antenna type and diameter of the radiator, but I
never finished it. It was also going to find "sweet spot" wire lengths
to use rather than looking for the "holes" in the graph to determine the
sweet spot. Maybe one day...

I graph these high current points in a
separate spreadsheet. What you are looking for are the "holes" or gaps in
the graph and that is where you are supposed to cut the wire length to.
It is slightly counter intuitive, but it works visually.

After the initial version, I made changes to it while on business trips
out of the country, so each version has the name of the city I was in when
making the change.

There is a help file of sorts that you can access that explains it

I was working on a more complex version that calculated the wire length

Do this.

Do you get this error...
http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50440.aspx

When you check the compatibility of your Firewire chipset?
http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50456.aspx

If so, then your Firewire is running at 100 MB rather than 400 MB and this can
result in audio distortion and drop outs.

If not, then don't worry about the hotfix.

Justin,

I am very new at this, but my understanding is that the latest SDR installs
checks whether it is needed. 2.0.16 popped up a message saying I should
install the patch. Since I posted, I have been able to grab the contents of
the upgrade directory before Windows can delete it. Running the UPDATE.EXE
file gives a message saying "The file is not correct." ?? Don't you just love
the clear, unambigous error messages?

Looks as if we are going to find that out. ;)

Hi Alan,

Ah, OK then.

Do you *need* the patch? Does your system work without it? I had an issue with
installing it too. I finally gave up and tried without it, there have
been no issues.

Is it possible you are trying to install on a disk other than the C drive? I
have seen this error when there was a problem to install programs on any

Don't you just

MS Hotfixes require a password to decompress, it should have been emailed to
you automatically when you requested the hotfix. If you have the email from
MS, read it carefully, the password is there.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex+PC all in one

2010-12-21 Thread Mike Schwendeman

I am going to TURN AROUND Jack's idea: -I had always considered dropping
a Mac Mini INTO the Flex-5000a cabinet! If the top-most (is it the V/U
unit?) add-on is not in place, the newest models of the Mac Mini would
quite possibly fit in this open space. (The front panel could be cut to
allow the 'Mini to peek through, to allow access to the optical drive,
or the little computer could simply be dropped in place behind the
panel.) The Mac Mini does a great job running the Flex-5000a, by the way!

No matter how one does the installation, an access hole would have to be
made in the cabinet someplace to allow for the needed cables to and from
the computer. And, YES; The "RFI" from both devices might prove to be a
problem

2010-12-21 Thread Mike Schwendeman

I am going to TURN AROUND Jack's idea: -I had always considered dropping a Mac
Mini INTO the Flex-5000a cabinet! If the top-most (is it the V/U unit?) add-on
is not in place, the newest models of the Mac Mini would quite possibly fit in
this open space. (The front panel could be cut to allow the 'Mini to peek
through, to allow access to the optical drive, or the little computer could
simply be dropped in place behind the panel.) The Mac Mini does a great job
running the Flex-5000a, by the way!

No matter how one does the installation, an access hole would have to be made in the
cabinet someplace to allow for the needed cables to and from the computer. And, YES; The
"RFI" from both devices might prove to be a problem

MS Hotfixes require a password to decompress, it should have been emailed to
you automatically when you requested the hotfix. If you have the email from MS,
read it carefully, the password is there.

Re: [Flexradio] Questions about antennas and spectral displays...

2010-12-21 Thread Tim Ellison
OK. I believe ya

The link to the spreadsheet is:
http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=357

A little background.

This spreadsheet started out as a "brain stimulator exercise" during a mind
numbing extended 6 month stay in Jakarta Indonesia in 2004. (don't ask). Back
then, I was using an AH-4 antenna coupler and it, like the SGCs do not like
wire lengths that are even half wave multiples of the transmitting frequency.
Since the AH-4 can match 160-6m, if you calculate the wire length of all the
1/2 wavelength points, you get a bunch of numbers. Furthermore, the wire
length is different for loops and dipoles at the same frequency. A bunch more
numbers.

When I was going to get home from Indonesia, I was going to put up a new
antenna for the AH-4, so this is how the spreadsheet came about. This
spreadsheet calculates the 1/2 wavelength (fundamental and harmonics) or high
current point of various wire antennas for all of the ham bands. These values
in feet (or meters depending on the units that the constant is in) are the ones
you are NOT supposed to use with antenna couplers, like the AH-4, SGC and the
CG-3000. I graph these high current points in a separate spreadsheet. What you
are looking for are the "holes" or gaps in the graph and that is where you are
supposed to cut the wire length to. It is slightly counter intuitive, but it
works visually.

After the initial version, I made changes to it while on business trips out of
the country, so each version has the name of the city I was in when making the
change.

There is a help file of sorts that you can access that explains it somewhat
better. It is embedded in the spreadsheet.

It is an Excel 2003 spreadsheet and some of the fields are locked to prevent it
from getting hosed up and to protect my intellectual property :-)

Finally, the basic disclosure. I don't claim this works and have no liability
from its use. It is "as is", but I use it all the time and it hasn't failed
me. Sending me an e-mail asking me how it works or to use it, may or may not
illicit a response.

I was working on a more complex version that calculated the wire length based
on frequency, antenna type and diameter of the radiator, but I never finished
it. It was also going to find "sweet spot" wire lengths to use rather than
looking for the "holes" in the graph to determine the sweet spot. Maybe one
day...

Have fun. Ho Ho Ho.

I received a call that my VU5K was on the way, so I decided to experiment
installing the software. During the process, I got a message suggesting that I
install the MS Firewire patch. I am running XP Pro, SP3, so that was not
unexpected. I was able to download the patch and unzip it. However, it does
not install.

Running from a full administrator account, if I use the RUN command, it runs,
giving me a quick message about unzipping, but then comes up with an error box
saying "Access Denied." Clearing that, another message,
"KB9555408 installation did not complete." Clicking on the file, or using the
"Run As" command, I get an error message which says "Unable to find a volume
for extraction. Please verify that you have proper permissions." If I check
with Windows Explorer while the error message is up, I find that there is
indeed a directory and subdirectory created with the sort of EXE and DLL files
you would expect. However, it is locked, and when I clear the error messages,
it is deleted.

I have tried using a different admin account, downloading the patch again,
booting to safe mode, installing from a USB drive, and of course disabling the
antivirus protection, Norton. There is about 250 G of unused disk space. I
even rolled back to an image before I installed the SDR software, but no help.
Googling on the error message text brings up several sources, usually about
installing SP3, but none seem relevant.

Any ideas?

Re: [Flexradio] MFJ-998 tuner - Wire Lengths

2010-12-21 Thread Tim N9PUZ
I saved this from a post long ago on one of the QRP mailing lists. My
manual and external auto-tuners always seem to find a match with these
lengths. I tend to go with "longer is better" if you intend lower
frequency operation.

73,

Tim N9PUZ

Alan Chester (G3CCB)(SK) proposed a solution for the high impedance of a 1/2
wave, end fed antenna. Mr. Chester rationalized that there might be some
impedance-friendly length of wire usable for an end-fed antenna - near 1/2
wave - that didn't present the tough-to-tune, high-impedance load on a
select set of bands. In short, he proposed wire lengths in the 1/8 - 3/8 or
5/8 - 7/8 wavelength range, staying away from the 1/2 wave length (or
multiples thereof).

In his article "Taming the End-Fed Antenna" (reprinted in "The Antenna
File", RGSB, pg 118) he looked at this issue by plotting various 1/2 wave
lengths and proposed:

   - 26.5m (86.9 ft) for 160 - 10M use
   - 15m (49.2 ft) for 80, 40, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10M use
   - 10m (32.8 ft) for 80, 40, 30, 17, 15, 12, 10M use

The idea is to pick a length that doesn't fall on or near the 1/2, 1.0, 1.5
(etc.) wave length points of the bands of interest.

On 12/21/2010 12:28 PM, W8HW wrote:

I had that problem with the MFJ-998 tuner at first also. I found that
target by lowering the Target SWR to 1.2, then I only had to increase
the tune power to 15 watts and now no problem. Also all auto tuners
do not like even harmonic matching. By that, I mean if you use a 80
meter dipole, the auto tuner does not tune it well (stable) to either
40 or 160 meters. If you need to use that antenna on the next band
(up or down), you are better to make it a random length. Not
following that rule cause the tuner to operate at one end or the
other of its tuning range (a unhappy area for tuner), and becomes
unstable and will start again after switching to high power. That is
one reason that 43 foot (and a few other length) makes a good multi
band antenna, it does not fall into (or a harmonic relation to) any
ham band. Auto tuners love that length and work well. My MFJ-998 and
all other auto tuners now tunes very well at 10 watts, but I still
use 15 watts. No more problems even at almost full (1300w) power.

Subject: [Flexradio] Questions about antennas and spectral displays...

I think I know the answer, but I want to double check... That 43 foot
antenna... is it an end-fed random wire off the back of the tuner? or a
center-fed dipole, with total span 43 feet?

Also, as a side question... Anyone happen to know why all the other higher-end
modern rigs (Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, Ten-Tec), use swept spectrum analyzers
instead of using an FFT like Flex Radio uses?

[Flexradio] MFJ-998 tuner

2010-12-21 Thread W8HW
I had that problem with the MFJ-998 tuner at first also. I found that target by
lowering the Target SWR to 1.2, then I only had to increase the tune power to
15 watts and now no problem. Also all auto tuners do not like even harmonic
matching. By that, I mean if you use a 80 meter dipole, the auto tuner does not
tune it well (stable) to either 40 or 160 meters. If you need to use that
antenna on the next band (up or down), you are better to make it a random
length. Not following that rule cause the tuner to operate at one end or the
other of its tuning range (a unhappy area for tuner), and becomes unstable and
will start again after switching to high power. That is one reason that 43 foot
(and a few other length) makes a good multi band antenna, it does not fall into
(or a harmonic relation to) any ham band. Auto tuners love that length and work
well. My MFJ-998 and all other auto tuners now tunes very well at 10 watts, but
I still use 15 watts. No more problems even at almost full (1300w) power.

Re: [Flexradio] Finding Noise

2010-12-21 Thread Ross Stenberg

Al Capone was known to remove noise with a similar technique.

Two winters ago I had some noise that only occured on very cold
nights. I suspected a bad power transformer atop a pole. The problem was
how to identify the pole it was on. I'd like to share the two tricks I
used. You'll need a baseball bat.

I went down the block listening with an AM radio. When the noise increased
I whacked each pole with the baseball bat. When I hit the 3rd pole the
noise immediately changed. The vibration caused the pole to vibrate which
transfered into the transformer. A crude microphone! I also noticed a "red
light" atop the transformer which I later learned was an "over-temp"
indicator. When I called the local power company they agreed to check it.
Two days later, no more noise! I received a call from one of their
engineers who was amazed to hear how I found it. He commented that they
had a $10K instrument for doing what I did with a baseball bat and an AM
radio!

I'm a coward! Down loaded PSDR 2.0.16 on 11/9/10 and waited for the dust to
settle! Ran it today - no issues -very smoooth install. Works great!
Thanks to the Flex group for the Xmas present - a newer radio!
