I used a Palomar up converter with Drakes in the past and it worked really
great. I am going to try and find another one for my 1500. Should be a great

Here is what I've done with excellent results for the 600+ meter band.

I have two Clifton Labs filters, one is the BCB reject filter mentioned below
and a second custom low pass filter I had made by Clifton La bs with a 3 dB
corner at 85 0 KHz. This second filter allows my Flex 5000A to cover the low
end of the BCB with no images, down to 500 KHz from about 850 KHZ where the
images appear to start up pretty badly.

As noted by Jordan, the BCB band reject filter still allows stuff from above
the BCB to to get in and produce lots of false signals below 500 KHz. I can
hear 160M amateur signals there with the BCB reject filter in. When I run both
the 830KHz low pass filter and the BCB reject filter in series, ALL the false
signals and images go away. Nothing left but actual signals from 500 KHz down
to about 250 KHz where images from below 500 KHz begin to start up. I think
another low pass filter at around 275 KHz would allow reception down lower yet.

With all these filters, I think a down converter is probably best in the end.

I have a Jack Smith customized and swept NDB/Navtex BCB reject filter with
the following attenuation specs within the BCB:
770khz -83.127dB
910khz -84.85dB
960khz -83.467dB

I have the sweeps for the curious

When inline, the display above 550khz shows next to nothing, but once you
tune below 500khz there are still 'false' signals everywhere, although not
as strong as without the filter. Like this, I can hear WWVB quite well, but
cannot rely on the signals that appear on the display to be real.

It takes a further tunable preselector to clear most but not all of the rest
of the 'ghosts', and that only works over a 20-30khz bandwidth at a time.

Personally, a good upconverter to one of the ham bands that have BPfiltering
@ 50ohms impedance at the input would be a better solution.

Re: [Flexradio] 472-479 KHz receiving and transmitting ERP and antennamodels

2012-02-23 Thread Ken Alexander
I can only speak from the experiences I have with my 1500 and my previous
general coverage receiver, which was an AOR AR-7030+.  I used the 7030 many
times with beverages from 500 to 1500 ft long and have only used the 1500 with
lowpass filter and a Wellbrook wideband active loop.  In my brief experience
with the Flex 1500 + lowpass filter + loop combination I'd have to say that it
compares very favourably favourably with my 7030 and a beverage as far as being
able to hear things goes.  There's no comparison when it comes to filters and
noise blankers; the Flex wins hands down!

This doesn't seem to apply to other Flex models, so I guess I'm just lucky.  I
think the up converter is probably the superior solution for 3000s and 5000s
but I think a lowpass filter will serve me nicely,

Hi,

I've had this problem since I first bought my 5000A two or three months ago.
The power button sticks in about half the time, but it still powers the
radio on/off OK.
If I push the button from the side a little it will pop back out. I

I didn't want to have to drive it back down to Austin (about 3 hour drive)

I just wondered if anyone else had a sticky button and if they tried to fix

Otherwise the 5000A has performed great, an I love operating it.

2012-02-23 Thread Chuck O'Neal

Personally, a good upconverter to one of the ham bands that have BPfiltering

[Flexradio] Power Button Sticks 5000A

2012-02-23 Thread Bill D
Hi,

I've had this problem since I first bought my 5000A two or three months ago.
The power button sticks in about half the time, but it still powers the
radio on/off OK.
If I push the button from the side a little it will pop back out. I
thought it may stop sticking
after a while, but I think it may be getting worse.
I didn't want to have to drive it back down to Austin (about 3 hour drive)
or mail it back
for such a small thing. I have not opened it up to see if it's something I
might can fix.
I just wondered if anyone else had a sticky button and if they tried to fix
it.
Otherwise the 5000A has performed great, an I love operating it.

Thanks,

Bill - KE5YA

I have a 500 KHz low pass filter on the way from Clifton Labs. I will
test 600-630 meter receive capability with the FLEX-5000 and FLEX-1500.
I'll give the group a report once I've had a chance to install it and run
some tests.

Also,

Ralph, W5JGV - WD2XSH/7, has "run the numbers" on how much power you will
need in order to generate 1 watt effective radiated power. ( A 50'
vertical, no top loading, will need 102 watts of transmitter output to
generate 1W effective radiated power ).

Re: [Flexradio] 472-479 KHz receiving and transmitting ERP and antenna models

2012-02-23 Thread Jim Barber
I'm getting interested in this, in spite of my resolution to not engage
in Any More Projects... ;-)

If relatively simple single-conversion receive converter were designed
using a sharp, passive preselector, 29mhz +7 dBm LO and a Mini-Circuits
passive mixer, you could figure about 3dB loss in the preselector and
5db in the mixer, for a total loss of ~8dB.

Not knowing anything about the 472-479 khz average noise floor and
propagation, is that good enough?

Thanks,
Jim N7CXI

[Flexradio] 472-479 KHz receiving and transmitting ERP and antenna models

2012-02-23 Thread Lloyd Berg N9LB

I have a 500 KHz low pass filter on the way from Clifton Labs. I will
test 600-630 meter receive capability with the FLEX-5000 and FLEX-1500.
I'll give the group a report once I've had a chance to install it and
run some tests.

Also,

Ralph, W5JGV - WD2XSH/7, has "run the numbers" on how much power you
will need in order to generate 1 watt effective radiated power. ( A 50'
vertical, no top loading, will need 102 watts of transmitter output to
generate 1W effective radiated power ).

Check out the numbers here: http://500kc.com/600_M_Vert_Ant_Chart.htm

[Flexradio] Looking for an alternative input method for PowerSDR

2012-02-23 Thread Greg Jurrens
Hey Flex Folks:

I have a customer that is trying to get his close friend into amateur
radio. This individual has MS and no longer has dexterity with his
hands. He can speak and see so the "hamming" part is easy It's
the radio tuning that's a challenge.

If you have any experience with voice or eye-tracker control of ham
radio, I'd love to hear from you. This doesn't need to be with a
FLEX-Series radio although I think PowerSDR would be a great visual
tool for this person. The key challenge is to get him active on the
bands.

Please contact me OFF-LIST at g...@flexradio.com . I'll then hook you
up with the Ham that's working to get a new ham on the air!

Thanks and 73,
Greg

On the subject of MixW, NK7Z has posted a nice quick-start for this
program on his website at www.NK7Z.net.

It won't help Steve's question directly, because it's not
Flex-specific, but it goes through the setup, explains a basic subset
of the program's many capabilities, and identifies the buttons and
controls. Very helpful for a new MixW user.

I missed somewhere. Can anyone tell me where to look?
