Read the thread "mobile 1500" of Oct 30 on flexra...@yahoogroups.com

PowerSDR etc. Some tablet/laptops are available using the same CPU
for less than $200. (See the nextbook series at walmart.)

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR

2014-09-17 Thread Jerry Flanders

Hi John

Have you considered interfacing a contesting
program like Writelog or N1MM, etc to your radio?
Contesting programs typically include CW/voice
(macro) replay, and provide for repetitive
voice/CW messages as well. N1MM is free and I
think it would work for the playbacks you want.
N1MM also has an email reflector where you could ask more questions.

You could ignore all those other logging, etc,
functions that you don't need and just set up the macros.

With that bit of preamble, what I did was to go to each of the

each Category, once opened,
you should see a blue tag/label/button that says Follow. Click on
that; the button should now

The hardest thing for me was setting up Chrome cookies...because I

Hi Gerald

I tried to set up a way to receive a copy of every posting, as you

How do I specify that I wish to FOLLOW ALL PRODUCTS, as you

Subject: [Flexradio] Frustrated with VAC, WSJT and Fkex

Yes, I once had WSJT (JT-65A) working, but that was two computers ago. I've
even made one six meter ENE contact and been heard by several stations. With
W7GJ now at KH8, I'd like to try to work him. But, without WSJY, VAC and
Power SDR working together, there's no chance.

I do have VAC installed and the latest Released version of WSJT as well as
VSP manager. So, I don't need instructions on downloading and installing
same. The OLD Knowledge Center article that I printed out a year or two ago,
spends a lot of verbiage on downloading and installing these programs. It
talks about installing VAC into Power SDR Version 1.14.0. That's how old it
is.

One of things it says it to make sure that Flex 5000 Firewire device driver
is set to the same parameters and Safe Mode 1 is the operating mode. It
refers to another Knowledge Center article to explain how to do this.

Going to the Flex Website, I find no place to find Knowledge Center articles
anymore. Has the Knowledge Center been done away with? I did find a
so-called White Paper entitled

"LEVERAGING SDR FOR BETTER DIGITAL MODE COMMUNICATIONS". But it is nothing
but a sales pitch for software defined radio and VAC. I don't need a sales
pitch. I'm already convinced re SDR and have been for years..

What I need is a good up-to-date step-by-step description of what parameters
to set into Power SDR, VAC and WSJT. At the moment, I'm getting an ERROR
message in WSJT saying "Error in opening audio channels" and some other
stuff that says it won't work.

I DID have the audio stream running normally an hour or so back, but I've
obviously messed it up now.

Frustrated,

The one I ordered through Amazon is showing a delivery time of
approximately one week from tomorrow. Other distributors have them at a
similar price and each lists several of the 40A (#1692) in stock.

Maybe, with all this discussion, there will be a "run" on them. :)
Hobbyking would not process my order, said the zip code must be numerical,
which it was.
On the $300 power supply Amazon said, "Usually ships within 1 to 2 months",
really 1-2 months?

The point is all hardware fails and there are no guarantees.

Like others, I have many astrons that have never been turned off (almost)

If you are really really concerned, run off a 12v battery and then float
charge that. That is the closest to a solid solution and you'll never have
an overvoltage issue.

There is no end to this discussion, so can we end it?

[Flexradio] VAC ?

2014-06-08 Thread Jerry Ostermiller
Now working on going remote and have much to learn. I have been able to set
up a basic VAC mode (installed Team Viewer) and it will now allow me to use
a portable laptop or my cell phone via the internet for listening to the
radio, but for some reason I only get audio in SSB mode. Although I can
control the Flex-3000 remotely just fine, I have no receive audio in AM and
need advice on how to remedy that as I do enjoy my local AM group.

Any help would be most appreciated...

Re: [Flexradio] External 10 MHz reference input for 6700?

Jerry W4UK

At 12:06 PM 5/19/2014, Graham Haddock wrote:

Yes.

When the radio boots, the current software will auto-detect the
presence of an external 10 MHz
reference input that is above the minimum input level and use it
instead of the internal OCXO (6700)

or internal TCXO (6500).

It does this at boot time, so if you apply the 10 MHz input after
the unit is already running, it won't use

the external input until the next re-boot.

If the radio is using the external input, and you remove it during
operation, the radio will fall back to
the internal reference within one second. If the external 10 MHz
then re-appears, it will not be used

until the next re-boot.

Re: [Flexradio] Can't post in community. Says sign in to post I AM signed in!!

Do you have a different computer available from which to log in? How about
a different browser on the first computer? The reason I mention this is
because I was recently told of a friend's laptop that would not allow her
to log into anything with Internet Exploder 11, even after clearing
cookies, temp files, etc. She then tried logging in to the same sites with
Chrome and found true joy.

Please let us know if this helps.

Check the tx/rx turn-around time on the 3000. At one time, I think it

Hi Larry, I just fought this problem last weekend. For me I needed to put a
check mark in the I/Q settings on the righthand side of the page on the VAC tab
in PowerSDR so you are sending the I and Q stream and not the processed audio.
Hope this helps.

The "spike" every several seconds may be due to the Trial Version... it is
a means of reminding users of that version to buy the paid version. For the

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-1500 Overdriving in Some Bands

2013-10-18 Thread Jerry
Well said Steve. I don't think anyone at Flex is paying any attention
to the post any more

On 10/18/2013 7:01 PM, Steve Sterling wrote:
When I set up my Flex on psk31, etc. there was a writeup on the
knowledge base or wiki on how to set up for digital modes. Key point
was that you left the "drive" at 100% and LOWERED the VAC to no more
than -6db, never as high as 0db. As explained, 0 db on the ALC was
where the digital audio chain flat-topped which creates copious
amounts of IMD. If you set at 0db ALC, you will distort because it has
no more headroom if it goes +0.1db. You won't see it on the screen
meter (insufficient significant digits) but others will hear it.

Also, mic gain, equalizers and other tools in the microphone audio
chain are not in the VAC audio chain. Only the limiters and ALC.
Straight through.

Oh, one area I also had problem with IMD. Your psk31 app and the FLEX
VAC input should be set at the same bit width and data rate. Otherwise
your 3rd party virtual audio cable software must convert from one
format to another, introducing distortion, instead of just passing the
bit stream unmodified.

Set up right, Flex radios have a good reputation for being pretty
clean in the digital modes.

Recently, I was working PSK31 on my Flex-1500 with other stations,

my frequency and announced in a not very nice way that was I a lid and

anyone I had worked before, so I was a little concerned if he was
right. So, I

bought the PSKMETER kit and assembled it. After running it and testing
my signal, sure enough, I was splattering quite a bit. This surprised
me as I set my sound levels using the ALC meter was always 0db or
less and yielded full output power.

To better get an idea of what was going on, I setup the SDR 2.6.4
two-tone test to output two tones, 31hz apart, like 1000hz and 969hz
to simulate the PSK31 signal. Using PSKMETER and a dummy load to
limit stray RF signals, I tested on common PSK frequencies on all
the bands. All tests were done with no VACs enabled, and just using
the internal two-tone test so over driving by another software
program was eliminated.

Here's what I found:

80m Starts over driving above 40% power
40m Starts over driving above 30% power
30m Starts over driving above 65% power
20m Starts over driving above 85% power
17m Starts over driving above 75% power
15m No over driving at up to 100% power
12m No over driving at up to 100% power
10m Starts over driving above 35% power
6m No over driving at up to 100% power

In all cases, the meter for EQ, Mic, Leveler, Lev Gain, ALC, etc
never was any other value than zero.

I have tried to work with FlexRadio support, and they gave me the
run-a-round, saying to try this or thateven to try using the
transmit filter to limit the bandwidth I am transmitting to
eliminate the splatter. I would like it if they just admit that the
hardware is causing the problem, but I have not received any answer
to that question.

I had the TX/RX board replaced last summer because of an unfortunate
lightening strike. I'm wondering if this board is suspect, but they
won't answer.

Has anyone else seen this issue of over driving on some frequencies
with the 1500?

Lucky for me I use JT65 and JT9 modes most of the time now, and they
are far less susceptible to splatter than PSK, and my QSOs seem to
bear out that my 5 watt Flex-1500 and SkyWire antenna work pretty
well. I recently made two contacts from Missouri to Western
Australia, one on 20 meters and the other on 40 meters, a distance
of over 10,000 miles.

2013-05-22 Thread Jerry Flanders

Thanks, Eric.

You say " I fully expect it to come within the free software period".

I would like Flex to _commit_ to providing this
feature within the free software period.

This is very important to a lot of us who have
discovered the importance of the panafall thanks
to PowerSDR. Losing it will be a major step in reverse.

Can Flex commit to providing it within the free software period?

John,

I'm afraid you've gotten bad information. As VP of Software Development at
FlexRadio, I can state with authority that not only will SmartSDR have a
waterfall display, but that it is high on the priority list for us. This
is the same position we have had since SmartSDR was conceived. While it is
a high priority, we will not hold shipment of FLEX-6000 series radios for
this feature. Thus, the initial release of SmartSDR will not likely
include a waterfall mode. We do not have a timeline for release of this
feature, but I fully expect it to come within the free software period for
everyone that has purchased a 6000 series radio to this point. I hope this
clears up any confusion surrounding this feature.

2013-05-03 Thread Jerry Falletta
When out of Joy, try Dawn. ;)

Seriously, there has to be a new source of that noise in or near your
house/station. I have seen trickle chargers, battery tenders, wall warts,
etc. that caused horrendous noise. I personally found a wall wart on the
old router that went bad (it was >6 years old) and drove me nuts with
noise. Of course, it was the last thing I checked.

Outside the building, there could be a bad power line or transformer.

Best of luck finding the source; please let us know how it goes.

Re: [Flexradio] DIY 10 MHz sources for putting Flex 5000A "DEAD ON" orreally close

2013-02-19 Thread Jerry Flanders
I think the most important thing to remember in the Rb vs GPSDO
debate is that without some other standard like a GPSDO or better to
compare to or calibrate against, you never know that your Rb
oscillator is actually on-freq. The LPRO-101 has an adjustment to
vary its freq. How would I know that adjustment pot didn't get
jostled during shipment? Lastly, since we know the early Rb units
were subject to failure due to aging of the Rb tube, how would I know
the one I was considering has much life remaining ?

Bottom line - I would HAVE to be able to check/calibrate it, but
against what primary reference?

Without a GPSDO to compare the Rb to, I think buying a Rb one would
be a crap-shoot. After thinking it through, I skipped the Rb step
and went straight to the GPSDO.

This is not a, "which one is better," question. It is a question of what is
the job you are trying to do.

It is useful to understand the differences. Certainly the long-term
stability of the GPSDO is better because the reference oscillator is always
being corrected back to the correct time, i.e. long term number of cycles.
But in the short term, variations in the GPS satellite geometry can cause
the GPSDO to exhibit short-term frequency errors. Of course, long-term
these are corrected back out but if one was comparing one would notice
small short-term variations in the frequency of the GPSDO while the RbO
showed more stability. So the question is, which is more important?

Of course, could could have a GPS-disciplined Rb reference. Now you get the
best of both worlds, i.e. dead-nuts accurate long term stability with
outstanding short-term stability.

And the other thing that many people seem to forget about is the phase
noise of the disciplined reference oscillator. That may have substantial
effect on the performance of the receiver over and above the frequency
accuracy.

So, when it comes to the question of, "which is better, an Rb reference
oscillator or a GPS disciplined oscillator," the answer is a resounding,
"it depends."

I still hold that, for most people looking to increase the frequency
stability and accuracy of their Flex 1500 or 5000, an Rb reference like the
LPRO-101 is simpler for the following reasons:

   1. No outside GPS antenna needed.
   2. The LPRO-101 runs on a single 19V supply (I use an old laptop power
supply) while the Thunderbolt needs +5V, +12V, and -14V. I use a cheap
laptop DC supply to run my LPRO-101 from the shack 12V supply.
   3. The output of the LPRO-101 may be fed to the external reference input
   with no attenuation.
   4. The LPRO-101 has relatively low phase noise.

Like I said, I have both but find the LPRO-101 Rb reference easier to use
and its accuracy still exceeds the tuning accuracy of the radio.

[Flexradio] Was there a Flex 6000 demo at the Richmond, VA hamfest today?

Did you attend? Can you give us a report?

Was a Flex- 6x00 working? Which of them?

Was it running a recording or real-time reception?

Were spectators allowed to tune/control it?

  Limitations?

  Other comments?

[Flexradio] Adding a 3000

2013-02-02 Thread Jerry
I already have a 5000 and was looking at the ways to connect the new
3000 to firewire. Can I daisy chain on the the second firewire on the
5000? I never plan on using them at the same time.
My firewire card has 3 ports; one 6 pin and 2 others (they don't seem to
be 4 wire). I'm going to have to disconnect everything to pull the
computer to find out. Jerry

I noticed that ALL tuning in the Youtube demo was done this way.
There were no "click-tunes" in the demo, and now your verbal
descriptions refer only to sliding.

IMO, if we don't have click-tuning with the 6000 radios on day one,
we will have taken a step backwards in operability.

with the right click on the task bar trick and had it come up without a
move command.

My fix was the same as yours - I unplugged the second monitor, let
everything reposition on the primary monitor, and then plugged back in. I
suspect that there is a bug in the way Windows handles multiple monitors.

You may want to consider a utility called Display Fusion. It's not free
but it has a trial period and it's not really expensive either. It fixed a
whole lot of my multiple monitor problems.

Re: [Flexradio] Help with analyzing noise from waterfall and panadapter

2012-09-17 Thread Jerry Flanders
Do you actually have a high broadband noise level, or is your display
simply not set properly? Set your waterfall to low level -130 high
level -80 and see how 40 meters looks. Mine is medium blue. I can
darken it by setting the low level to -120.

To set the waterfall color, click SETUP DISPLAY LOW LEVEL, etc.

Unfortunately, optimizing one band changes it for the other bands.

FYI, the new Flex 6000 series radios have standard hardware ALC. I

If there's a choice, I still believe ALC is a bad means by which to

I don't want this is to turn into yet another thread about the

I agree that some kind of fault signal should exist between a modern

ALC is a *good* means by which to do that, although it may be the

How about a compromise? Instead of herding cats by proposing a standard for
amateur amplifier/transceiver ALC operation, why not just finish the

transceiver? In other words,
if the negative-going ALC ramp goes past [some negative number] then
the rig interprets that

Re: [Flexradio] Virtual RF recordings with the 6000?

2012-08-24 Thread Jerry Flanders
The fact that it works at all is what is
important to me. It worked better in the early
days. I suspect it was accidentally broken
somewhere in an upgrade and never fixed.

You notice problems other than the frequency
tuning offset? (I mean when you try to tune
through a recording it jumps several KHz and you
lose your target signal, but if you tune up several KHz you find it again?)

Thanks, Steve. IMO, the ability to do the
"virtual RF" recordings is the most significant
gee-whiz feature of the Flex radios.

I once tuned through a recording at a club demo
that I had made a few days before, and one of the
guys actually heard himself on the air during
the recording. Jaws were dropped!

Please try to have it in the first upgrade.

Re: [Flexradio] Screen resolution?

2012-08-12 Thread Jerry Flanders
I don't know the design values, but crude measurements on my display
indicates a full unstretched single instance is about 1040 pixels
wide by about 620 pixels high.

Many modern video cards will let you rotate the display, so if you
could rotate a conventional 1920x1040 display, you could place one
above the other and still have a 1040w x 680h space at the bottom for
other stuff. Come to think of it, a third instance of PowerSDR would fit there!

[Flexradio] Flex 3000 Connection Problem

2012-06-16 Thread Jerry Moulder
As are most things in my life, this can get complicated.
I'll try to be a simple and succinct as I can:

I have a new Flex 3000. Actually a /replacement /3000. The
original installed well but had an intermittent failure,
that, despite the best efforts of Dudley, couldn't be
repaired in the field. At any rate I got a new 3K as a
replacement. I had two different Firewire cards, both new
and believed to be good (they worked as far as connecting
with the first Flex 3000. And, for good measure, I switched
to a Lenovo desktop. A dual core 3 GHz machine with 4 GHz MB
of memory (PC1300) and Win 7 Pro with essentially nothing
but the operating system installed on it. I installed PSDR
and the Flex driver without incident. Windows Device Manager
showed the driver comfortably nestled in place. But, the
driver cannot find the Flex. Only shows "Demo" After fooling
around a bit, I swapped the Firewire card into another PC
(not mine) and tried it. It connected right up. I swapped
back and it wouldn't connect. So the only thing different in
the connect/wouldn't connect scenarios is the actual PC itself.

Am I missing something? UAC issues? 32/64 problems? ANY help
would be appreciated.

[Flexradio] OK to run earlier version of PowerSDR?

2012-06-09 Thread Jerry Flanders

5000a, Win XP SP3

I recently installed PowerSDR 2.3.5 but am having problems and would
like to drop back to 2.2.3 temporarily.

Can I do this by simply running 2.2.3 or do I have to make changes in
firmware/driver/etc first? If so, what is required?

Thanks

5/27/12 Ticket #1430: The peak position data on the right side, below the
panadaptor is not reading correctly. This happens when RX2 is turned on.
When RX2 is off, peak position data reads correctly on RX1. This was
identified as a possible bug in PSDR 2.3.5

4/25/12 Ticket #1258: VU5K 2 meter and 70 cm transmit output power is low at
around 45 watts. This was turned in as software defect #703.

4/24/12 Ticket #1258: Squelch does not function on RX2 when tuned to 2
meters FM. Can't turn squelch on and off.

9/6/2011 - 12-16-11 Ticket #509 : When I have RX1 set to 2 meters (any
Frequency) and RX2 set for 10M at 29.070 I am receiving a Denver, Colorado
public safety FM station on RX2 ( This issue was determined to be a probable
software defect, transferred to the engineering group and logged as DE662.

12-16-11 Ticket #509: During the discussion of the apparent intermod
problem on RX1-2M / RX2-10M it was discovered and confirmed that the display
on the console regarding the antenna configuration don't sync up and is a
known bug.

I miss the old bug tracker page on the Flexradio website. Is there any
chance of seeing that return?

I want to say that the technical staff on the Help Desk at FlexRadio are the
absolute best. They are extremely knowledgeable of the SDR products, always
go out of their way to assist and are quick to sort out the pertinent

There are always trade offs in design. In order to achieve a 1 dB NF for
weak signal work on 2m, it is necessary to eliminate band pass filtering on
the preamplifier input and to run high gain through the system. This makes
the front end more susceptible to overload from out of band signals. A band

Also, the SDR-1000 was able to benefit from the unique Tracking Notch
Filters in PowerSDR that came out last year, which was 4 years after end of
manufactuing. That is pretty unusual for a 9 year old radio that is out of
production.

Everyone needs to understand that 100% of the products from all amateur
radio vendors will cease to be made at some point in time. Some soon and
some later. Component life cycles are turning faster than ever and it is
utterly immpossible to plan. End of life of a critical component can happen
with little more than a few months notice and you are forced to make a
lifetime buy if even available. It is simply a fact of life in our
business.

On another note. The reason you are hearing public safety is that the VU5K
is designed for very weak signal work. It has a 1 dB noise figure on 2m,
which is achieved with high gain and a preamp without input preselection.
If you put a bandpass filter on the front end it will cost you a little
sensitivity but will get rid of the intermod. There are always tradeoffs
like these.

Gerald

I just expect more of a lifetime than a couple of years.

It is disappointing because the VU5K never did work correctly from day one

more public safety channels in the 2 meter band than I hear ham radio
operations. I always suspected this is more due to software boogers in the

I guess I view the VU5k analogous to the "Spruce Goose".

A large number of spares depends on how many units have been sold and the
MTBF
of the identified spare parts, especially the critical parts that have been
discontinued.

Not a simple remove and replace, the future of the VU5k will take someone to

troubleshoot the problems down to the component level. Oh joy!

I just wish that Flex would have designed around the long lead time parts.
They
did not, so the ones that own the VU5k will have to deal with the

Flex stated that they are not going to make new VU5K assemblies past a final

build, but they will keep a "large" number of spares available. So you
already
have the assurance that you are asking for.

And I would also like to point out that the worlds of electronics
manufacturing
and machine equipment are very different. My company (automotive
electronics)
struggles mightily to maintain component continuity; we are constantly
testing
so-called "drop-in" replacements and tweaking designs to adjust to the
reality
of the components available.

Unless you are in the industry, you probably do not have visibility in to
how
short the life-cycle of particular components can be. Silicon manufacturers
compete fiercely, and are constantly "churning" components. There are
certainly
long-lived components available, but it's almost impossible to build a
modern
high-performance ANYTHING out of a bunch of "reference" parts.

In my opinion, Flex need to assure to his customers a long time life of all
o his product because it is part of his marketing strategy selling SDR
products.
A Part that cannot be available must be replaced by another, better that the

new one, this is always possible, maybe it cost some money but it is
possible.
I have CNC machines in our factory and at least during 10 years of their
life we can get replacement parts for electronic control of them.
I think that the 5000A is still less than 10 years old .
Anyway I am sure flex will do his best to give us support for this nice
transceiver for a long time, so I am not worry at all.

They have announced they are discontinuing the product so a detailed list
really doesn't accomplish much. As my wife says, it is what it is (??)

If you are not willing to use an intermediate

But others have probably used your amp with Flex - check the archives.

BTW, you can buy a plug-in card to provide both

Many of us use DDUTIL to determine what band the

OOPS! I just re-read the PDF brochure: "Slice Receivers allow you to
simultaneously visually and audibly monitor multiple frequencies
within the same band or multiple bands ". Looks like we will have
audio to use. Multiple means at least 2, and maybe 4/8. I don't see
the hardware connection points, so maybe we will have audio streaming
over the ethernet to the PC client. My error.

John, a significant gain is that the new design can receive several slices
of spectrum at once. In other words, you can run a number of the
lightweight display/control windows at the same time, each pointing to
different frequency slices. They can be on different bands, modes, etc.

We know that reception as panadaptor views of those 4-8 slices are
planned, but we don't know if we will have audio from 4-8
"receivers" available for use in some worthwhile way. Might be
disappointing to assume that ordinary functions will all be
available in an extraordinary radio, then find they are not.

John, a significant gain is that the new design can receive several slices
of spectrum at once. In other words, you can run a number of the
lightweight display/control windows at the same time, each pointing to
different frequency slices. They can be on different bands, modes, etc.

We know that reception as panadaptor views of those 4-8 slices are
planned, but we don't know if we will have audio from 4-8 "receivers"
available for use in some worthwhile way. Might be disappointing to
assume that ordinary functions will all be available in an
extraordinary radio, then find they are not.

Connect the new radio and power it up per the manual, the run PowerSDR. If
a choice of Demo or Flex appears, pick The Flex radio and you are good to
go.

That weight is similar to the old IC-765, I believe, but with a lot more
buttons and knobs.

[Flexradio] Standalone ethernet communications for 6000 radios

2012-05-21 Thread Jerry Flanders
Will the 6000 radios operate by plugging one end of an ethernet cable
into the radio and the other end into a computer - that is, just the
radio, the cable, and the computer - with no switches or routers?

Re: [Flexradio] The GPSDO option in the 6000

Read your ad copy - it seems to say that the OXCO
is not included when one orders the GPSDO option.

Is the OXCO/TCXO included irregardless of the option order?

I would assume that the GPS receiver is disciplining the OCXO, not
replacing it. If you replace that nice oscillator you would probably reduce
the phase noise performance.

[Flexradio] Imagine a description of SmartSDR that...

2012-05-19 Thread Jerry Flanders
Would it be possible to publish a description by the Flex software
team as to what they speculate will be in the first release and maybe
the first couple of updates? Not a firm commitment (plans don't
always work out) but a speculative description of what they are
working toward and can reasonably expect to deliver.

It would be nice to see a report on the software as comprehensive as
the PDF we now have on the hardware.
