Re: [Flexradio] VU module pricing

Robert-I think you will find the V/U modules were on *sale* for about a year
now - longer than the original plan. The recent increase is probably due to
restoring the modules to their normal retail price point.Any new product is
commonly introduced with incentive pricing. Joe Roth, D.B.A

Having a ~100 dB dynamic RX on V and U with a ultra-low NF, yes, the price
is worth it if you are a V/U/microwave enthusiast . If you want to talk on
repeaters, then there are better suited and priced options other than a
 F5K+V/U

As far as the software not being finished for the V/U, yes, that can be a
deterrent for those wanting to do FM. It rocks on SSB and non-FM digital
 modes right now.

BTW, the F5K +U/U is about the same price as what is estimated for the
IC-9100 if it ever gets FCC approved.

As I have a no option 5k, I eventually want to add all of the options; which
almost doubles the cost of the base model. I do want the VU option, but
considering what I have read with no 2 modules from Flex's vendor being the
same, the module having to be aligned in your radio to meet spurious
emission standards and lastly a power supply mod has to done to the 5K to
install the module. All this in addition to powersdr not presently working
well on fm or PL tones; one has to seriously consider the upgrade. I
personally was taken back by the cost of the module, but now the price has
gone up 200 bucks. 1300 for the transverter? Huh, did I miss something here?

[Flexradio] 2m FM RX sub-tone

Listening to 2m FM repeaters is a pain in this area as most use CTCSS on the
output. The Flex does an excellent job of providing full audio fidelity. The
sub-tone from the repeater is disturbingly noticeable. I tried using the EQ but
it makes a negligible difference. Is there a was to notch out audio below 300

I did a similar upgrade from VISTA to WIN7. In fact, I didn't even BOOT the
brand new (HP) VISTA machine until I received the WIN7 upgrade, so the
upgrade was basically onto a clean VISTA OS, and like your experience, the

upgrade went pretty well.

This is a fairly speedy i7 quad core with 8GB RAM and 1TB driveHowever,
I am having several problems/mysteries. And this is all before any ham
FLEX apps are installed!

I set myself up as ADMINISTRATOR but the system still will not allow me to
do certain tasks. I have turned User Access Control (UAC) down to its lowest

setting without being OFF. I am listed in USERS as an Administrator, but
still get pop-ups telling me I'm not authorized to run some apps, but then
if I continue I can run them, but sometimes totally denied access to certain

apps.

One of these was CHKDSK, which I tried to run today...had a mysterious BSOD
(my first), and the new Event Viewer is extremely crypticthere was some
mention about a disk issue so I figured a CHKDSK wouldn't hurt (from Command

Prompt) but it won't let me run it. There's a few others ( can't recall now)

which I'm also denied...don't think I have real ADMIN rights?

I can right-click some icons which offer to elevate access rights, but these

appear not to do anything, or not be permanent. Also their menus are a bit
contradictory.

Today's BSOD was disturbing. Never could find the data dump; Event Viewer
has become really complex bloated, I don't know how to analyze it. No new
drivers or software in the past 4-5 days but the PC decided to puke this
a.m. for no apparent reason.

I can't make this new PC exchange files on the LAN, even though I have the
workgroups set up right and have C:\ set for shares. The new PC is visible
on the LAN, and vice versa, but no file transfers.

There are more nagging issues, but that's all I rcan remember off the top of

my head.

I maybe can wade thru hours of blogs and HOW TO fixes, but there's more to

my life than calming down this new stallion PC. I don't know if these issues

are due to a VISTA-WIN7 upgrade, bugs in the new W7 OS, poor choices of X86
apps on my part, etc. Has anyone been there done that? I'd sure like to
get this tool running so I can play with ham radio again!

Tnx es 73

Subject: [Flexradio] Vista-Win7 upgrade

I had a working Flex 3000 system with a Vista 64-bit tower using
PowerSDR, VAC, com0com and MixW and decided to mess with success and
upgrade to Win7 (the upgrade disk arrived a couple weeks after I
bought the tower). Anyway, bottom line is that the in-place upgrade
went pretty smoothly. The upgrade advisor indicated that com0com would
have a compatibility issue. Pressing on ahead, when Win7 finally came
up (about 90 minutes of churning), everything looked pretty good,
except that none of PowerSDR, VAC, MixW and com0com would run due to
various complaints. However, after removing these packages,
reinstalling and reconfiguring them to their former states, everything
looks peachy. So Win7 upgrade success--just thought I'd pass that on.

The only lingering glitch was that after removing and reinstalling
MixW, it evidently went into demo-expired mode (I had had about a week
left), repeating the word trial at regular intervals in the audio
stream. So that requires a purchase decision sooner than I'd planned.

Firewire 800 only has native operating support with Win7, which by the way
is the primary reason that there are problems with Win7 and Firewire with a
lot of products in addition to the FLEX-x000 SDRs.

To get that adapter to work on a different operating systems, you will have
to use a vendor supported version of ohci1394.sys. I personally have not
had any luck with 1394a/b combo adapters using that TI chipset in operating
systems other than Win7 to recognize the radio, so your mileage will vary.

If you can find a 1394a only card (S400), you will have a better chance of
it working since Win7 only has limited support with PowerSDR 1.18.3. Full
Win7 support will come with PowerSDR v2.0.0

Something I and most hams have learned over the years, if your radio is
mission critical to you, you best get a back up radio. I bought a 746PRO for

How about this -You get a RMA and you are told when to send in the
unit for the least down time at Flex.
In my case I'm told the bride diode is out in my 5000A. Estimated
repair time is 3-4 weeks , I operate on a 75 meter net each night
so I'm going to be off the air for about a month.Thats a long time,
would it not be better to give me a date to send it in for
repair. In this way I could continue to operate and the unit would not
just be sitting around on a shelf at Flex .
Lets say Flex can't get to it for 3 weeks, just give me an appointment
date, I will send it UPS 3-4 days before the repair appointment.
It would seem to me this would give Ed some predict on what was
coming in and for a lot of guys they could still use their radios if
they have minor issues.

[Flexradio] Flex PC building block

2009-07-16 Thread Joe Roth-WC4R
If it helps anyone, I built a new PC for my Flex 5000A to replace my Dell.
The PC does run LOTS of stuff at my station, not the Flex exclusively. I use
VISTA 32-bit OS.
It has been flawless as a PC for the Flex. Probably overkill for me and most
others but you never know what is needed 3-4 years down the road. Overclocks
well too.
I bought everything from NewEgg. Here is a link to the PDF equipment list.
http://www.qsl.net/wc4r/FlexIntel-WC4R.pdf
Adjust it to your needs.

Please keep it pubiic! There are others out here with the same question: I
have (what I thought was) a big bad HP Laptop. I come to find that DPC
latencies of 1200 us with bigger spikes will quickly disqualify if from
handling live audio data streams like PSDR.

I've watched for qualifying PC's, but haven't yet seen a repeatable
consensus.

Subject: [Flexradio] OK, time to get a real PC

After additional troubleshooting, I am convinced that this Lenovo T60
tablet
PC is simply not going to meet my needs for Flex usage. Besides the other
posts I have shared regarding performance issues, and disabling just about
every service I can, and still having DPCLAT of 1000 microseconds (which
drops to 20 microseconds when I remove the Firewire connection!), I have
had
2 blue screens in the past 24 hours.

So, I am looking for a new PC with good performance and reliable Firewire.
I am worried about ordering from a bulk seller and getting cobbled parts
that are not optimized to work with each other. I am also worried about
throwing money away on a system that is too high powered for what I need
(8
GB of RAM? Quad core proc? That's overkill I would think).

I read the requirements for performance. Good background info. But my
question is this: can someone volunteer a manuf/model which they are using
that meets the requirements and which they are really happy with? Request
you email me directly offline, as I fear this topic has generally been
beaten to death indirectly and I would just like to get some individual
 1-on-1 feedback.

 Thanks in advance.

[Flexradio] SVN versions v1.19.x

2009-07-01 Thread Joe Roth-WC4R
I hope someone will un-confuse me.

I like to play with two SVN editions: Pretty Betty and the latest SVN from
the test branch. Now, Pretty Betty always updates with the latest SVN number
but when launched, it show v1.19.0 in the title bar. Then the test branch
updates with the same SVN number but has v1.19.1 in the title.

Why the different .0/.1 designators? Are they not the same if the SVN is the
same?

Any one running a Command HF-2500 AMP connected to a Flex5000?

When I push the PTT on the Flex, it activates the amp, but does NOT unkey the
amp. when I release the PTT. The radio goes to the receive mode.

Probably something to do with t he Darlington circuit in the Flex. The amp has a
relay in the keying circuit, so I do not see the need to build another relay
circuit to go between the Flex and amp.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello friends of Flex!

blip/flip fixed in SVN 3170 in the test branch. BUT THIS HAS NOTHING TO
DO WITH THE OFFICIAL FLEX RELEASES.

Folks, I do want to really urge you to use direct email to individuals
involved in the coding AND the bug reporting system to report on these
branches. It leaves the wrong impression with people who are
completely unfamiliar with svn, branches, trunks, and the impression is
that we have buggy unfinished code being distributed or that we are
keystone cops. There is only one place for official releases. To the
best of our knowledge, that code is stable, usable, wonderful. We are
doing development in the open unlike almost anyone else in the business
but we cannot be punished by having bad publicity for doing something
good and unusual.

If you are one who cannot take a download from svn, watch it completely
break, and then be content with waiting FOREVER if necessary for a fix
after you have given an officially acceptable report, then a) don't
take the download and b) stick with the official release. These are on
the web site. THAT is what should be discussed here unless it is your
intent to harm Flex Radio. I do not believe that is anyone's intention
and I urge you to stop. If you think this is a reaction to a specific
incident as well as a collection of previous incidents. You would be
 RIGHT.

On the blip/flip in the test branch (completely ALPHA unstable test
code, that would be why it is called.. TEST).

Last week Eric and I were trying something else. We left it in an
indeterminate state, one that is quite normal in alpha code, when Eric
went away for 3 days and I took a badly needed weekend off (I have been
traveling nonstop for 3 weeks). We cannot do this and have a dozen
people howl on the reflector here giving hundreds of potential customers
the impression that we are the keystone cops. I uploaded a sdr library
(DttSP.dll) that had a problem in it. Dozens of emails later in this
reflector and we have given the wrong impression to almost all who have
stopped by. The code we are talking about is not an official release
and I am now taking the following discipline for myself. I will not
discuss alpha code here in any way ever again. I will personally simply
ignore all mention of them here. I urge this on my fellow coding
types. A remedy to our communication is on the way I believe by giving
a place for people who want to test possibly broken code openly and
Gerald will be announcing his proposed solution soon enough. We want
your input, we cannot live without it, but it does none of us any good
to hurt Flex Radio while we are trying to do good. The good has to
outweigh the downside or the downside will simply win.

To help sort out the 3000 vs. 5000 messages, early on I just created a
mailbox filter and have separated messages for the two radio models. Works
great for me. Box1 = 3000, box2 = 5000, and a default for all others.
Most people (should and do) type in either 3000 or 5000 in the subject line.
You can key on that for the mailbox filter.

We all owe John our eternal gratitude for finding serious bugs in the
ALC system that I have fixed (ending overshoot and some internal
ghosts/IMD forever). He put some serious test equipment on the job
(that I did not have at my disposal) and within literally a few hours of
studying his documentation and looking at the code, the problem was
fixed. Much to my chagrin, his first email on the subject wound up in
one of the cascaded bit buckets (spam filters) that protect me from the
world. Gerald then showed me the document while I was in the middle of
doing the first round of the wideband IQ work (also available in the
test branch) and it just slipped my mind until a month ago.

In an attempt to eek out the last measure of good sounding high
performance TX, John suggested this new ordering and did his own
version of the reorder. It does indeed sound great. It his MEASURABLE
lower in band IMD (the transmit filters are so steep it had to be in
band from the DSP).

This is the test branch, svn 3122 and higher.

It has new ALC, wideband image reject, and much more.

WARNING WARNING WARNING, DANGER WILL ROBINSON.

The image reject in the new code requires you to recalibrate your radio
and store values in the EEPROM just like now. There is no easy mapping
between old and new so the old goes away and the new replaces it. Once
you do this, you will be unable to get good image rejection upon
returning to the trunk or 1.18.0 Release without recalibration again.
This can be a really tedious process. The new algorithm is blistering
fast but to go back, you have to do the old stuff. The wideband image
reject then dynamically tunes to signals on the band from this starting
point. If things go well, this will be in the new release, and it
appears to be a complete winner so far.

So if you do not understand what I am talking about in this just
finished pseudo-English paragraph, DO NOT USE THE TEST BRANCH. We
really cannot be bugging Dudley, et. al. with support issues on this
test code. They do not have sufficient hours in the day.

You can drive your linear harder without it tripping. The compressor (DX

To set up the audio, set the TX Meter to 'ALC Comp' and adjust the mic
gain until you get 2 to 3 db of alc compression
on voice peaks. Then you can run 3 to 5 db of 'DX' for full sounding high
quality rag chew audio. Or run it all the way to

I have more amps than sense

In current production I have an AL-80B and Acom 2000A, and I just sold a
 AL-1500

In past production I have Amp Supply LK500C LK500NTC and LK800TNY and a
 Alpha 78

My recommendation is the AL-80B Best bang for the buck in ham radio. Its

instant on and has very reproducible tuning so I can basically switch it
on set the band switch set the tune and load to a preset mark I have on
the panel and make a contact. If you need to change a tube its only one
 tube you have to buy

If you really want to put out the snot and be a high powered bully then I
recommend the AL-1500 or something like the LK800TNY. If I was going to
have only one amp it would probably be the AL-1500. Big power supply and
the amp is very indestructible. I've had the same tube in the amp for 20

years. You do have to be disciplined however in tuning the thing and you
have to consider what kind of antenna and feedline you are going to use

If you want an amp that's not a lot of money but can put out a little more

They all play great with the Flex stuff. The 80B and 1500 have solid

[Flexradio] Feedback wanted on new PC idea

2009-05-17 Thread Joe Roth

Gurus:
PLEASE give me your feedback (via the group or direct) as to the components I
have chosen to build a new quad core PC to be used with my Flex 5000A. The PDF
is at http://tinyurl.com/r4eezr. Keyboard drives will be pulled from my
existing PC.

My 6 year old dual core (3.0GHz) Dell 8400 (VISTA Business SP1) with 4GB RAM is
a bit too slow as my Flex AND full function station PC. This PC is a dual boot
with Linux, uses two DVD drives, and two 320 GB WD SATA drives (plus WD
external for backups).

Being recently laid off, I don't want to spend the $700 and learn I made a
stupid move.

Joe

Keyboard, drives, and OS will be pulled from the existing Dell. Existing HDs
with OS and programs should drop in to the new system.

  Didn't see an
operating system in the list, are you thinking of the Windows 7
  release candidate until March?

Careful: If you run the Win7 Release Candidate build, you will almost
certainly have to do a complete re-install when the released product
comes out. That is, it would be unusual to be able to upgrade from
Win7RC to Win7 Gold (without manually editing the installation files).
And, note that there's no upgrade from XP to Win7 either.

[Flexradio] Class A bias DSB

2009-04-23 Thread Joe Roth

Hi gang. First I'm a newbie to the Flex 5000 so be gentle for my dumb questions.
I checked the KB and it came back with nothing on my two questions.
1. I see the 5000 PA can operate class A. How does one do this? Is it
controlled with the PowerSDR or is this a hardware mod?
2. Can one insert a low level carrier when operating DSB with PowerSDR? Sort of
like AM with a greatly reduced carrier.

[Flexradio] New PC build

2009-04-21 Thread Joe Roth

I decided to upgrade from my Dell 8400 dual core PC to a new custom build. This
will be my station PC to also run my Flex 5000A. I like overbuilt systems that
are somewhat RF free.

Before I plop down $500-$600 on the components, I would feel better if some of
the gurus here would confirm or correct me in any items I have chosen to go
with. NewEgg seems to have everything in stock.

MB: ASRock AOD790GX/128M AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GZ ATX type
PS: Antec EA560
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 125w Quad core, black edition. 4x512 L2
cache 6MB L3 cache
RAM: Corsair Dominator (2 x 2GB) SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Already have 2 WD internal SATA HDs and 2 DVD R/W.
Set in to an Antec 300 all metal case.
I'd like to try the MOBO's integrated firewire first.

I'm also considering the MSI 790GX-G65 AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD MB w/ 1Gb
DDR3 Side-Port Memory, Hybrid CFX
but I'm not sure of that MOBO's support quality.

Feedback?
Many thanks!!

Since MS wants to stop supporting XP soon mainly due to Win7's arrival, has
Flex been testing with any versions of Win 7? Like it or not, many will be

[Flexradio] Band Text file

2009-04-11 Thread Joe Roth

Hi all-
I am a new Flex 5000A owner (3 days now). Sold off my TT Orion and so far I am
VERY happy.
So, I'm a newbie with LOTS of questions as I go through another radio learning
curve.
My question: What is the file I saw on the Flex Yahoo group called BandText.mdb
posted by W4TME?
I can not see any such file in my folders or any way to load it. I must be
missing something.
