Hi Dale!

Disable all power saving options.

Look for check boxes saying something like turn off this device when not in
use to save energy. That feature is useful for laptops not connected to
anything and running on battery power for long periods, but for a desktop PC
that feature is nothing but trouble.

For how to information on Windows-7 Power Management just Google windows 7

When I giggle the mouse sometimes the screen and power sdr comes back up ,but
most of the time power sdr will come back but not operating. Looks just as

If I want to get back to the running 1500 on the screen, usually need to

This is the first time I have used windows 7, used both the 5000 and the 1500

Re: [Flexradio] freeze up with a 1500

Hi Dale!

Some PC's share the USB buss between multiple ports, or the USB may share a
IRQ with other devices. Try a different USB port on the back of the PC (
not the convenience ports on the front ). If that does not resolve the
issue, you may want to try a USB add-on card if there is an expansion slot
available on the motherboard.

Subject: [Flexradio] Flex 500 Transverse Port

I am baffled.

Here's what I have:

Flex 5K

DEMI transverters for 222 and 1296

I have set the offsets for both on the transverter screen - 194 MHz for 222
and 1268 for 1296. All other parameters are the same. For both 222 and 1296.

I have been using the 222 transverter with good results.

In trying to get the 1296 set up, here is what I find:

Without either transverter powered and a 50 Ohm dummy load plugged into the
transverter port on the 5K:

Selecting 222, noise level is -131 dBm

Selecting 1296 noise level is -111 dBm

A 20 dB difference

Why should they not be the same? Both are a 28 MHz. input.

After first making sure that 10 meters was open and I was hearing signals, I
plugged the antenna into the transverter port but could hear nothing. Ok,
maybe the transverter port has a pretty low sensitivity and needs more RF,
as it would get from any transverter. So, then with the dummy load plugged
into the transverter port, I tried transmitting while listening on a
separate receiver. I heard nothing. Yes, it's only a few milliwatts, but I
would think I would be able to rear it.

Why should the noise level for the 222 and 1296 selections be different when
they are both the same 28 MHz transverter port? Aa I said, all parameters on
the transverter screen are set the same, except, of course for the frequency
off-sets.

Anyone have any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both the SDR-1000 and the Flex 5000 suffer from poor AM broadcast
and longwave reception, with images of BC stations breaking through
in many inappropriate places, especially below 1 MHz.

I have been wondering what others have done to remedy this.

I have considered 1) a preselector/antenna tuner to greatly narrow
the spectrum bandwidth seen by the front end, using my existing
inverted L antenna; 2) a tunable narrow loop antenna; or 3) an
upconverter to tune longwave and AM broadcast at, say, 4 MHz.

I wonder if anyone on the reflector has any wisdom to impart on this
subject.

Thanks,

Kevin.

I was on the phone with Bob from Balun Designs. He suggested a dual

160-10 meters.

My friend in a QSO last night suggested the MFJ-915. This item is only

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] Suggestions - EMI/RFI Suppressors Ferrites

2012-12-22 Thread Lloyd Berg - N9LB
I had this problem when I first purchased my 5000A running more than about
50 watts. It turned out that RF was getting into the firewire cable.

I put ferrite chokes on each end of the firewire cable (three loops through
the hole), no more problems, now I can even run the Alpha amp at full power
160m to 6m! I also put one on the microphone cable just for extra
insurance. Cost about $5 each.

The ferrite chokes I used are:

EMI/RFI Suppressors Ferrites 257 OHM @100MHZ SPLIT FERRITE
Mouser Part #: 807-BF2930
Manufacturer Part #: BF2930

http://www.mouser.com, search on: BF2930

Unfortunately this number is now obsolete so you will have to look for the
current version of the same thing.
http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/EMI-RFI-Components/EMI-RFI-Suppress

You might even be able salvage the RF chokes that come attached to some
computer cables at no cost.

Also,

[Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - Technical Info

2012-02-16 Thread Lloyd Berg N9LB

All,

While the 1 watt to 5 watt power seems small, it really isn't because
the specification is Effective Radiated Power. An efficient dipole
antenna at this frequency would be about 1000 feet long, a 1/4 wave
vertical would be over 500 feet tall.

If you are running a 60 foot vertical ( requiring a huge matching
network ), your efficiency would only be a few percent, therefore your
transmitter power output would be somewhere around 100 watts.

That is still very low communications power, but quite suitable for CW
and some digital modes over 100's of miles - maybe more.

I plan to gear up for it and be ready to go on the first day operation
becomes legal. Yes I'll be using my FLEX-5000. Transmitting will
probably require some form of low frequency transverter. Receiving
might just require filtering and possibly a pre-amp.

I'm looking forward to exploring a whole new band!

1 watt maximum EIRP. Big deal.

Not too exciting news. I am glad to hear that we have some Medium
Frequency spectrum, but 1 watt output and the size of the antenna is
almost not worth the effort. The requirements remind me of the lowfer
band (160-190 khz) limitations.

This is almost part 15 output.
How about giving back the lower portion of the 220 band.

[Flexradio] How can I put a RX only antenna with a preamp on RX1? - Warning!

2012-02-14 Thread Lloyd Berg N9LB

Hi ZacK!

Be very carefull when doing this! I burned out my receiver input when
trying this.

In the current software, there is no relay disconnect of the external
receiver input when you are transmitting ( when you split RX and TX
paths ). Any transmitted RF that is picked up by the receive antenna
gets fed directly into the receiver!

I suggest you get an outboard front end protector or a very fast relay
that disconnects the receiver input when transmitting.

Hope that prevents you and others from experiencing some major grief!

[Flexradio] New Rules for 5 MHz (60 Meters) To Go Into Effect March 5

2012-02-03 Thread Lloyd Berg N9LB

( From ARRL Bulletin )

New Rules for 5 MHz (60 Meters) To Go Into Effect March 5

On November 18, the FCC released a Report and Order (RO), defining
new rules for the 60 meter (5 MHz) band. These rules are in response
to a Petition for Rulemaking (PRM) filed by the ARRL more than five
years ago and a June 2010 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). In
the February 3 edition of the Federal Register, the FCC announced
that these new rules will go into effect on March 5, 2012.

Details can be found at,

[Flexradio] 222 MHz Optimum Setup

2012-01-19 Thread Lloyd Berg N9LB

Hi Mike!

I've been running the DEMI 222-28 25w transverter (2010 version) for
about 2 years. Rig is the FLEX-5000, using the transverter ports into a
dual 1-of-6 RF switch. It works well. I use it with a M2 222-10EZ
antenna at 60 feet. I also have new version DEMI transverters for
other bands, incl 902 and 1296, all are performing well.

People tell me that the new version DEMI transverter frequency stability
is greatly improved and the sensitivity and resistance to strong signal
overload is also substantially better than with the earlier models.

Hi all,

What do the VHF/UHF Flexers consider the optimum way to use a FLEX-5000
on 222 MHz?

Anyone know how the 2010 version of DEMI 222-28HP compares to the
previous version?

Is the DB6NT TR 222 H still available?

What else is out there?

Connection configuration quirks?

Thanks in advance,

Mike - W8MM
