Re: [Flexradio] RF quiet ATX power supply
Robert, I recently had to replace the P/S in my desktop. Local availability for minimum downtime was a priority. I picked up an EVGA 600W ATX12V/EPS12V for $49.99+tax at Best Buy. I have not noticed any RF noise from it at all on any band, including 6m. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info On 06/22/2017 10:08 AM, KR7O wrote: The supply in my Flex computer died yesterday. Mark, 1.2 kHz down would be an image response of your xmt signal if the sidetone frequency is the default value of 600 Hz -- as if the opposite sideband was not being suppressed. You did not say what type of radio. IF FLEX-1500, FLEX-3000, or FLEX-5000, try doing a reset to factory defaults. Re: [Flexradio] Fw: n1mm recent install
Dan, I have NEVER been able to get N1MM'a voice keyer to work with PowerSDR. It seems to only work with the PC soundcard. That is why I wrote my VoiceKeyer program. Otherwise, I love N1MM use it for all operating, not just contests. I generally keep it up to date with the latest revision, currently v9.10.2. com0com is much better than N8VBcom. N8VB has stopped working on his serial port emulator the configuration tool did not work properly under Vista the last time I tried it. However, Steve Nance, K5FR, has written a new virtual serial port manager based on the Eltima serial driver. I have been beta testing it for about a month with no problems. I highly recommend it over com0com. It works well is very easy to use. Like com0com, it is free. To download, go to: http://k5fr.com/ddutilwiki/index.php?title=VSP_Manager Be sure to carefully follow the installation instructions on the website. What OS are you using? My VoiceKeyer program has been used successfully on XP, Vista (32-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit). There have been some issues running it on 64-bit operating systems. Unfortunately, I do not have the capability of debugging in a 64-bit environment. Also, you MUST download and install the Microsoft DirectX v9 Runtime. Links are provided on my website. Re: [Flexradio] DPC latency
Don, Tim describes the issues well. Let me emphasize, however, that simply not running IE or any other app may or may not resolve any issues you may encounter. When I got my FLEX-5000, I had an XP machine. I was plagued by DPC's in excess of 4000us every time the hard drive was accessed, making the operation of the radio nearly impossible. There were no updated drivers available, so I bought a new PC all was well. My point is that excessive DPC's cannot be placed at the feet of any piece of software or device driver. It is simply the luck of the draw whether any particular system will have excessive DPC's. By far, most do not. But if you are one of the lucky ones, it may be a challenge to track down the real culprit. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] Panadpator and S Meter Calibration
Glenn, Somebody may shoot me down on this explanation, but I believe the reason is: The S-meter is measuring the noise power in the entire passband of the receive filter (a big bucket), whereas the panadapter is displaying the noise level at each discrete frequency (a bunch of little buckets). If you add all the little buckets within the filter passband together, the total should equal the amount in the big bucket. You can demonstrate this by changing the filter width. I just set my FLEX-5000A to 40m CW into a dummy load. With a filter width of 1 kHz, the S-meter reads -120dBm while the average signal level on the panadapter display is about -135dBm. If I change the filter width to 25 Hz, the S-meter reading drops to -128dBm while the panadapter level stays the same. No, you do not need to recalibrate anything. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] external antenna tuner a better approach?
Tim, I would like to take respectful exception to one of your statements: Some offer, at best, only marginal benefits for RX, because there is no real tuning per se going on, just matching the impedance of the transmitter's output to the radiator (antenna and coax) that is attached. It is a well-known fact that matching the load impedance to the impedance of the source results in maximum power transfer. That is why antenna tuners are so popular. What most people do not think about is that this applies to received signals the same as to transmitted signals. If we consider the antenna system to be the source and the RX input circuit to be the load, matching the antenna impedance to the receiver input impedance results in maximum signal transfer, i.e. - maximum signal strength at the receiver. That is why many antenna tuner instruction manuals tell you the first step is to adjust the inductance for maximum noise level on receive. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] digital mode recognition suggestion
Jim, You wrote, ... but wouldn't it be great if powersdr was able to identify the digital mode being used... Although it is possible, it is not really practical. PowerSDR does not currently contain any code to process digital signals as anything other than normal audio that would be necessary to support RSID. If I am not mistaken, way back when there was some thought given to including digital mode processing in PowerSDR. However, Flex made what is in my opinion a VERY wise decision to only have PowerSDR do what it does best -- control the radio. There are many other programs out there for the digital modes. It would consume far too much valuable software development resources (we're talking years here, just ask HB9DRV) to develop, maintain, support digital mode processing. Besides, everyone has their own favorite flavor of digital mode software. Re: [Flexradio] Some initial comments
Mark, From a different point of view, it should not matter whether the reviewer has a background in SDR or not. A radio is simply a tool, a tool to provide a means to communicate. In the final analysis, whether a radio is successful in the marketplace or not is solely dependent on whether it allows the user to efficiently make the desired contacts. If the radio allows a DX operator to hear the weak ones better than other radios, or if it allows a contesters to make more contacts in crowded band conditions, or if it allows the ragchewer to chat with his buddies on his favorite frequency, and it does all of this at a reasonable price, then the radio will be successful. (Assuming, of course, that the people marketing the radio do their job right.) In my electrical engineering courses we learned about black box design. I specify the inputs outputs of a device, and I don't care what you put inside the black box as long as the specified inputs result in the correct outputs. I content that a truly unbiased reviewer should take the black box approach to reviewing a radio. This would involve critiquing the ease-of-use of the operator interface, which provides the necessary inputs to the device, and analyzing the resulting outputs from the device. The reviewer has no real need to know or understand what is inside the black box. There is a learning curve involved in efficiently operating the front panel of any radio. My club station has an Icom IC-756ProII and a Yaesu FT-950, I find myself constantly referring to the operators manual because neither radio has what I would call a truly intuitive interface. Once the reviewer masters the basics of operating the radio, all that is left is doing technical measurements to analyze the outputs of the black box and operating the radio under real-world band conditions. If a reviewer takes this approach, the result should be an unbiased review of the radio, whether SDR or traditional. Now, before I am inundated by replies from others disagreeing with me, I will concede that Amateur Radio is a technology-based hobby. Therefore, totally ignoring the technology utilized by a particular piece of equipment is unrealistic. However, when I chose to buy an SDR-1000 when I was upgrading my station equipment in preparation for retirement, I chose it because of the reports of superior RX performance, not because it utilized a new technology. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Flexradio] Human Interface - A Conceptual Discussion for Flex Radio UI
Dave, The majority of the necessary control functions ARE available via keystroke. The real problem is one of focus. If PowerSDR were the only app running, then this is not a problem. However, many of us also run a logging program, a digital mode program, or other programs at the same time as PowerSDR. If one of the other programs has the focus then the keystrokes would be sent to that program rather than to PowerSDR. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] Re: V/U Upgrade
And, while we are on the topic, people have been referring it as a transverter. I believe I am correct in stating that it is not a transverter, per se, but actually an expansion module to extend the hardware to 144 MHz 432 MHz. The difference being that a transverter simply heterodynes (translates) the signals down to an RF IF frequency, typically 28 MHz, where the normal radio hardware/software takes over. Whereas with an expansion module, the 144 MHz 432 MHz signal processing will use the same direct-conversion techniques like the radio does on HF/6m. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Mike, What settings do you have for PTT/CW control? If you are trying to use the Connections settings on the Setup|DSP|Keyer tab with Secondary set to CAT, it is my experience that this will only work for CW, and not for any other mode. You should use a 2nd serial port pair and set the PTT Control settings on the Setup|CAT Control tab to control PTT from MixW. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Flexradio] PTT via CAT Port Problem
I am using N1MM Logger with PowerSDR and have bumped up against a problem (maybe) in the way PowerSDR handles PTT via the serial port used for CAT. I am NOT talking about PTT via CAT command, but rather PTT via the RTS or DTR lines. I have the following serial port pairs set up in com0com: COM7==Com17 COM8==COM18 PowerSDR is set up as follows: Setup|CAT Control|CAT Control Enable CAT is checked Port is set to COM18 Baud/Parity/Data/Stop settings are irrelevant. Setup|CAT Control|PTT Control Enable PTT is checked Port is set to COM17 RTS is checked DTR is not checked DSP|Keyer|Connections Primary is set to Radio Secondary is set to CAT PTT Line is set to RTS Key Line is set to DTR N1MM is set to use the RTS line on COM8 for PTT and to use the DTR line for sending CW. If I am in CW mode, N1MM Logger keys the radio sends CW properly. However, if I am running RTTY or PSK31, N1MM does not key the radio. I am virtually certain that N1MM is toggling the RTS line on COM8, but have no real way of proving it. N1MM allows you to set up a second serial port just for PTT/CW control. If I set the 2nd port to COM7 tell N1MM to use RTS for PTT control and to use DTR for CW keying, then N1MM keys the radio fine in RTTY PSK31. My question is: Do the DSP|Keyer|Connections settings apply only if you are in CW mode? The FLEX-5000 manual states, This is useful as some programs allow both CAT commands and COM port line keying for CW. This says that they will work for CW, but does not say whether they apply to other modes. I wrote a simple utility that allows me to open COM8 and toggle the RTS DTR lines. If PowerSDR is in CWL or CWU modes, then toggling DTR keys the transmitter. If PowerSDR is in any other mode, then toggling RTS and/or DTR has no effect. Is PowerSDR working as designed, or is it a bug? If a bug, I will enter a Bug Report. If not, I will enter a Feature Request. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Flexradio] Operators Manual
Mark, The FLEX-5000 does not come with a printed manual, but a PDF file is provided on the CD that comes with the radio. However, you can order a professionally-printed manual from Peter Markavage, WA2CWA. The PDF file is the interactive-type. That is, you can click on an item in the table of contents at the left-edge of the window the main portion of the window will display that section of the manual. Very convenient. One thing to consider about printing the manual -- with every release of the PowerSDR software, the manual changes. So, you would have to print a new manual a couple of times a year (or more). The next release is planned for the September time frame, I believe. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] Special computer
Alan, You wrote, ...two months later people are buying that same model but Two months is probably way too long a timeframe. The company I retired from tried to lock onto a specific model of PC for the production floor. For a while we were buying Compaq. Often, no two PC's in the same shipment had the same hardware, even though they had identical model numbers. This was simply not acceptabler from a maintenance standpoint. When I retired, we were buying Dell had been able, for the most part, to specify a particular hardware configuration which stayed fairly stable. Although there was no guarantee that we would be able to get that same configuration in the next order. At least they were consistent within shipments. By-the-way, we were also specifying Windows 2000 for all production floor PC's right up until the time Microsoft told Dell they couldn't continue shipping Win2k. However, we had kept a disk image, so we were able to install Win2k on the machines that were coming in with XP. We found Win2k to be much more stable than XP in a production floor environment. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Flexradio] Battery
Steven, The purpose of the large capacitor is not so much to reduce ripple but to reduce voltage sag under current peaks. It really has nothing to do with filtering. If the power supply is being operated too close to its maximum output rating, then instantaneous current peaks (during voice peaks for example) may cause the supply to go into the current-limiting mode. This results in a momentary drop in output voltage. A large capacitor can supply the extra current necessary during peaks to keep the voltage from dropping. A larger power supply will also cure this problem, but many are trying to use power supplies (either linear or switching, it does not matter) in the 25-30 Amp range to run 100W rigs. Your 35-Amp supply should have enough margin between its peak capacity the peak load of the rig to avoid this situation. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Flexradio] Battery
Connecting a battery directly across the output of a power supply is never a good idea from an engineering viewpoint. Okay, I am a conservative engineer when it comes to circuit design, but it still is not a good idea. Jim is correct, however he does not stress the point enough, that the power supply MUST be adjusted to the correct float voltage for the battery. First, we are talking about lead-acid batteries (including gel-cells) here. NEVER connect a NiCad or NiMH battery across a power supply. NiCad NiMH batteries are charged by constant current, NOT constant voltage. Applying a constant voltage across a NiCad or NiMH battery can have catastrophic consequences -- they can (and will) explode if the voltage is too high by even a few tenths of a Volt or so. The proper float voltage for a typical automotive battery is slightly different than that for a marine/deep-cycle battery. A couple of people have asked about damaging the power supply if AC power is lost with the battery still connected. The answer is YES. The regulator circuit used in the Astron linear power supplies (and most other brands as well) will be damaged if power is turned off with a battery connected to the output. Electrically, a battery acts like a capacitor with infinite capacitance. Lee's method of connecting a very large capacitor, such as 1 Farad like he uses, is the best solution to holding the power supply voltage up under peak load conditions. A bleeder resistor across the cap is not a bad idea, either. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Flexradio] Battery
Brian, I have a friend who has an Astron RM-35A power supply. I downloaded the schematic for him a year or so ago, I kept a copy. All of the Astron linear power supplies have the same basic circuit. Looking at the schematic shows that applying a voltage to the output terminals while the power supply is off will reverse-bias the base-emitter junction of the 2N3771 pass transistors. The absolute maximum reverse voltage rating of the B-E junction of a 2N3771 transistor is 5 Volts. Applying 13.8 Volts to the output with the AC power off has the potential of breaking down the B-E junction of the pass transistors as well as the B-E junction of the TIP29 driver transistor. It is not worth the risk. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] Griffin power mate
Brian, Yes, the fine tuning is done by ear. However, I use the mouse wheel for that. When operating SSB, I can click on a signal, quickly right-click to turn off the crosshairs, and then use the mouse wheel for fine adjustment of the frequency. In CW or digital modes, I expand the Panadapter to 4x magnification (or greater). At that magnification, there is never any need for fine-tuning. I find that the mouse wheel gives the same hand-eye coordination feel as the knob without having to move from the mouse to the PowerMate back. As for using the knob to move quickly from one part of the band to another as well as for fine tuning, you can always program the push-turn functions of the PowerMate to make large frequency changes. If you REALLY want to use the PowerMate for tuning that is. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

The problem with the CAT settings not transferring is a known problem that I am working on. You cannot replace the State or Option tables because that is where the calibration data and other data that should not be modified. Re: [Flexradio] Speaker set-up
Bill, That is exactly how I have routed the receive audio on my FLEX-5000A since I got it. There is nothing wrong with this approach. The additional A/D conversion should not be detectible by the human ear (at least not my 64-year old ears...hi..hi.). I believe that the phrase ...receive - not computer - audio... in the manual is a throw-back to the SDR-1000 days is an attempt to eliminate confusion with the audio line from the SDR-1000 to the PC soundcard used for processing the receive signal. There an additional advantage to using this method -- I found a useful application for my Griffin PowerMate. Like many, when I bought my SDR-1000, I was nervous about not having a VFO knob, so I bought the Griffin PowerMate. I quickly found that I did not like using the PowerMate for frequency change. However, by using its default settings, it makes an excellent volume control. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Burt, I thought the same thing, so I tried it, there is no discernible delay. Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] 3000 - Need a little more help please
Harold, In my FLEX-5000, the rushing sound you describe was due to a small amount of RFI, not enough to cause oscillation, but enough to cause bad-sounding audio. Like you, I cured my RFI problems by replacing the Firewire cable with one from Granite Digital. It sounds like you almost have the problem licked, just need a little bit more RFI suppression. Try one or two snap-on ferrite chokes at each end of the Firewire cable. My guess is that will do the trick. (By-the-way, my RFI problems were only evident when I was using my amplifier.) Now, having said that, I see that you are in the capable hands of Dudley, the Flex support specialist. Follow his advice implicitly. Re: [Flexradio] Sound card questions
Mark, You do NOT need a separate sound card to operate the FLEX-3000 or the FLEX-5000 transceivers. The list of supported sound cards ONLY applies to the SDR-1000 transceiver (now discontinued but available on the used market). Since no separate sound card is required, an external microphone pre-amp is not required either. The sample rate buffer size parameters relate to the A/D D/A converters. Since the SDR-1000 used an external sound card to perform the A/D D/A functions, these parameters were dictated by the sound card. However, in the FLEX-3000 FLEX-5000 transceivers, the A/D D/A functions are built into the radio hardware. Therefore, the sample rate buffer size parameters now apply to the built-in A/D D/A chips and are set through the control panel for the hardware driver that is installed when setting up the FLEX-3000 or FLEX-5000 transceivers. The demo mode of the PowerSDR software was originally written for the SDR-1000 transceiver and assumes a sound card using a sample rate of 48000 and a buffer size of 1024. Trying to set these parameters to any other values while using the demo mode will cause unpredictable behavior (i.e. - crashes). Just leave them at their default settings use the demo mode to familiarize yourself with the operation of the radio itself. You are correct, just install the driver, install the software, plug in a mic, antenna, power supply, and you are on the air. There is a 1/8-inch stereo audio output jack on the rear of the radio. It is labeled PWR SPKR OUT on the FLEX-3000 and labeled PWR SPKR LINE OUT on the FLEX-5000. In my setup, I have this jack connected to the Line In jack on my PC on-board sound card so I can use my PC speakers to listen to the receive audio. This jack merely delivers line-level audio to any desired external device used to listen to the receive audio. This can be your PC speakers (as in my case), a separate set of powered speakers (watch out for RFI susceptibility), a stereo sound system, etc. To operate RTTY, PSK31, or any of the myriad other digital modes, you need NO sound cards. You use two 3rd-party pieces of software called Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) and com0com. VAC simulates pairs of audio cables in software equivalent to 2 sound cards connected together with cables. You set MTTY (or other sound card software) to use the first cable for output the second cable for input. PowerSDR is then set to use the second cable for output and the first cable for input. Com0com allows you to create pairs of serial ports in software. These ports are used for PTT control. Com0com is free and can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/com0com. VAC costs $30 to register and can be downloaded from http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html. There is a trial version of VAC available. DO NOT use the trial version to transmit. The author injects a phrase that indicates that it is the trial version into the audio stream every few seconds. This not only disrupts reception of the digital signal, it also causes weird things to be transmitted. Hope this rather lengthy response helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-3000 and PACTOR-III?
Gary, Do NOT confuse the Line In and Line Out pins on the FlexWire connector with any type of audio signals. They are communications lines for a firewire-type communications port. The FlexWire connector is for communicating with 3rd-party peripherals, such as the Universal Controller Board (UCB), which will extend the hardware capabilities of the FLEX-3000/FLEX-5000 series of transceivers. There are no such 3rd-party peripherals available yet. However, some are in development, including a FlexWire version of the UCB (If I am mistaken here, someone please let me know). Bottom line: The FlexWire connector does NOT provide access to any analog audio signals, either TX audio or RX audio. It only provides for communication with 3rd-party peripherals, support for which will have to be included in PowerSDR when they are released. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] More on RFI issues
Harold, Your symptoms indicate that the RFI is getting into the PC via the firewire cable, causing the driver to lose communications with the rig. These are the same symptoms I experienced. I had a stubborn RFI problem on all bands when running my amplifier with my Gap Titan DX antenna, but not with my homebrew off-center fed 160m dipole. Adding multiple ferrite chokes to the firewire cable helped, but did not completely cure the problem. As mentioned by others on this reflector some months ago, I ordered a firewire cable from Granite Digital (http://www.granitedigital.com/firewire1394diagnosticcables.aspx). A 6-ft 6-pin to 6-pin cable is $39.00 and worth every penny. I installed the Granite Digital in place of the cable provided by Flex, and the problem was completely cured with no additional ferrite chokes needed. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] mobile sdr and a complete spectrum display
Jim, You wrote, ...is it a limitation of current components that prevents having a panadapter that can display the entire band at once? The short answer to your question is Yes. The amount of spectrum that can be monitored at one time is determined by the maximum bandwidth of the A/D convertor which is in turn dependent on the sampling rate used. The maximum bandwidth is always going to be less than the sampling rate. Therefore, the frequency range displayed by the panadapter is determined by the capabilities of the A/D convertor used. You will notice that the FLEX-5000 family of transceivers is capable of using a sampling rate of 192 kHz while the FLEX-3000 is only capable of a maximum sampling rate of 96 kHz. This difference is due to the different A/D chips used in the 2 types of radios. Theoretically, if you had an A/D capable of a sampling rate of 40 MHz or so, a communications link with the bandwidth neseccary to handle the resulting data stream, and the CPU power required to process that 40 MHz bandwidth digital stream in real time, it would be possible to display the entire HF spectrum at one time. Of course, you would also need a monitor a couple of hundred feet wide to make the display useablehi..hi. Seriously, an A/D with these capabilities would be prohibitively expensive, the required communications link does not exist with the current technologies available in the PC environment, and the processing power is also beyond the capabilities of PC-type computers. But, theoretically, it is possible. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] Trunk needs testing (read: a good beating)
Eric, With a major CW contest this weekend, you picked a good time to test it. I just finished making 300 contacts in the WPX CW contest with my FLEX-5000A the latest SVN from the trunk. All contacts were made QRO with my Ameritron AL-572B amplifier running 1 kW. My PC is an HP Media Center m8200n running Vista Home Premium. CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ at 3 GHz. I am not a high-powered CW operator (not even a low-powered one), so I cheated. I used CWget to bolster my copy, was sending using the macros in N1MM logger which controlled the PTT keying via the CAT serial port RTS DTR. All apps were running on the PowerSDR computer. In addition, I had Microsoft Outlook 2007 running minimized at all times, most of the time had Microsoft Excel 2007 running, also minimized. (A spreadsheet where I keep track of DXCC entities worked by band mode.) I experienced some audio dropouts during transmitting, causing my transmitted code to be defective. I lengthened all of the buffers, including the VAC buffer, which virtually eliminated the problem. However, it would still rear its ugly head occasionally, but not often enough to seriously effect performance. A perfectionist would say otherwise, but I could live with the occasional request for a repeat. Other than that, it performed flawlessly. I only ran search pounce, and I usually got the station I was calling on the 1st call, including some good DX on less than optimum antennas, a Gap Titan DX a dipole at 27'. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] Frequency change by slidingacrosspanadapter
I, myself, am getting a bit weary of this thread. As a retired electronic engineer with over 15 years of circuit design and 25 years of software development under my belt, I know from personal experience that in any design situation there are often 2 or more methods of solving the same problem, all of which are perfectly legitimate. There is no one perfect solution. Each method has its own advantages, and has its own warts. The mark of any good design engineer is the ability to deduce the optimum solution for any given problem, taking into account ALL factors, including economic business factors. Unless we were a party to all of the design discussions experiments which led to the choosing of firewire over the other available technologies, we cannot fully understand the reasons why firewire was chosen. Gerald has stated that all of the technologies discussed in this thread were investigated and firewire was found to be the only one that fully supported the data transfer rates required by the FLEX-5000 (and now the FLEX-3000). To state otherwise is to consider him to be less than truthful, or to be a poor engineer. Personally, I have implicit faith in his engineering judgement. Gerald has provided us with an outstanding communications system, a true advancement of the radio art. Obviously he is an engineering genius, and not a bad businessman either. One more thought on the choice of technologies. Each of the technologies discussed may be theoretically capable of the data transfer rates required. However, these technologies do not operate in a vacuum. They are part of an overall system consisting of the radio hardware/firmware, the computer hardware, the operating system, and the radio software. Realize that Gerald has no control over 2 of these 4 pieces. Most of my software development was for PC-based real-time process control systems. Trust me, neither the Windows operating systems nor the PC were ever designed to optimize real-time processing of high-speed data streams. All of this adds to the complexity of the decision that was made. The FlexRadio Systems series of software-defined radios are marvelous additions to our hobby. Re: [Flexradio] [OT] Efficent CW generation via CAT interface. OFF TOPIC
Mike, All of the Kenwood rigs use the same CAT command set. Some of the newer rigs have new commands that are not used by the older rigs, but that is not a problem. The TS-430S would simply ignore a command it didn't recognize. Therefore, any software that will control a Kenwood rig, will control ANY model of Kenwood rig. I actually found an after-market CAT control board on E-Bay for my old TS-140S was controlling it with N1MM logger with Ham Radio Deluxe. If you notice, all programs that use a CAT interface allow you to select the make model of radio. They list all of the different models of Icom Yaesu, but usually they simply say Kenwood for the Kenwood rigs. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Noisy ATU
Duffy, Most power amps for amateur use are grounded-grid design, where the input is applied to the cathode(s) of the amplifier tube(s), and the output is taken off the plate(s). A couple of peculiar (but inter-related) side effects are inherent in this design: 1. The output power delivered to the antenna is the sum of the input power supplied by the driving transceiver the power contributed by the amp, and 2. because the same (almost) current flows through the cathode(s) as through the plate(s), any change in the load impedance at the output of the amplifier is reflected back to the input. Therefore, the load mismatch at the output of the amplifier causes a load mismatch at the input of the amplifier. Most tube output stages can tune to a mismatched load without damage therefore, it is not necessary to achieve a perfect match between the amp the antenna system. This is because the plates can withstand the higher voltage peaks caused by the SWR without arcing, unlike solid-state devices. The amplifier plate load adjustment can compensate for the mismatch the SWR on the antenna feedline is exactly the same as if a tuner were used between the feedline the amp. However, the non-standard output load impedance shows up as a mismatch at the input of the amp, which an internal ATU in the rig can compensate for. So, to answer your question, an internal ATU does not help the amp tune a match to the antenna. It simply compensates for the different input impedance exhibited by the amp due to the different output load impedance. Clear as mud? 73, Ray, k9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Peter, QUOTE My thinking is PowerSDR V1.8.x works fine, if I upgrade to 1.10.x it doesn't work. Therefore, sounds like a problem in PowerSDR to me. /QUOTE Since 1.10.x DOES work for other users, my thinking (as a software developer) is that it is not a problem with PowerSDR itself, but rather an implementation/setup issue. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
[Flexradio] FireWire Cable
As the highly anticipated receipt date of my Flex-5000a approaches (MUCH too slowly!), a question has come to mind. Does the Flex-5000a ship with a FireWire cable, or do I need to go shopping? The Fort Wayne Hamfest is this weekend, I could pick one up there, if necessary. 73, Ray, K9DUR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [Flexradio] Heil Hedset
Army hit it right on the button. According to the Heil website, the ProSet iC has a condenser (or electret) element for use on Icom radios which use condenser microphones. A condenser microphone requires a DC bias voltage to function. The Icom rigs use a phantom power supply scheme which feeds the DC bias up the wire bringing the audio from the mic. The Flex-5000 does not provide this DC bias voltage. I am using a ProSet Plus (not iC) with my SDR-1000 with no problems plan to use it with my Flex-5000 when it arrives. If you swap your ProSet iC for a standard version, you might find the following information useful: The only problem I had connecting my ProSet Plus to the SDR-1000 was the fact that the Heil Yaesu adapter cable was not wired the way it should have been. The Yaesu mic pinout that Flex follows is: Pin 5 -- PTT Return Pin 6 -- PTT Pin 7 -- Mic Ground (Shield) Pin 8 -- Mic The problem arises from the fact that pins 5 7 are tied together inside the Yaesu radio while they are not in the SDR-1000 or Flex-5000. Heil decided to cut costs in the adapter cable by connecting Mic Ground PTT Return together, both connected to Pin 7, leaving Pin 5 unconnected. You have to connect PTT to the SDR-1000 via the X2 connector or to the Flex-5000 via the PTT jack. Alternatively, you could jumper pins 5 7 together in the Heil adapter cable. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Heil Hedset
Richard wrote, Ray I mentioned the issue you talk about here to the lady I ordered the connector assembly from, I think it was Mrs. Heil, and she said that has been taken care of. I don't remember what she said they did, but she was pretty sure of herself on that issue. I had purchased my AD-1Y adapter cables 3 or 4 years ago when I bought my ProSet Plus for use with my FT-100. They may very well have corrected the wiring in the adapter cable since then. Re: [Flexradio] antenna switching and tuner switching
Bill, Using 2 tuners in series is not a good idea because you can get some really weird combinations decrease efficiency. However, in this case, you would not have 2 tuners in series as long as the amp is on. The ATU in the Flex would adjust for any mismatch in the input circuitry of the amp the tuner in the amp would take care of the antenna system. The tuner in the Flex would not really be needed if the amp input circuit is well designed (probably a valid assumption), but its being on should not hurt anything. It should simply adjust itself for an already matched load, the same as if it were matching to a dummy load. On the other hand, if the tuner in your amp is active when the amp is off, then you WOULD have 2 tuners in series you should disable the ATU in the Flex. All that said, your best course of action is to set the ATU in the Flex to Byp except when you are on 6m or are operating low power on HF. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Problems running PCALE with SDR-1000
Peter, This is a common problem that nobody has been able to track down a cause for. To recover, open the Setup window on PowerSDR click on the CAT Control tab. Uncheck the Enable CAT box then check it again. All will be well for a while. I am running both N1MM Logger Ham Radio Deluxe (not at the same time) with my SDR-1000. If I leave PowerSDR running (which is my normal state), occasionally either program will fail to communicate with PowerSDR. Disabling re-enabling CAT control always fixes the problem. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Band data output from SDR-5000
Gerald, If TX1-TX3 can be set to become a binary output for band-decoding, how would you key an external device such as an amp. If TX1-TX3 are sending out a binary code for antenna switching or other band-encoded function, then they would have to be in that state during both TX RX, and therefore could not be used to tell an amp or other device when XCVR is in transmit. Bottom line: TX1-TX3 can be used for TX control of an external device or for band information, but not both at the same time. I think the best solution is the FlexWire version of the UCB. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] VAC Voice Keyer
Tim, I see your point. However, the QRM issue could be easily handled by determining where the PTT signal was coming from. If from the COM port, then disable mic input. Also, I would not want to take away the current Auto Enable feature for DIGL DIGU modes I see this as an additional option. Don't get me wrong. I would LOVE to see an integrated voice keyer, but I would take just the mic VAC simultaneously if it would speed things up. 73, Ray, k9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
