[Flexradio] 2.4.4 ... bug?

2012-09-11 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo

Hello friends:
using 2.4.4.

If i click : DIGL/U reports LSB/USB on SETUP then when DUSB or DLSB is
used on PowerSDR my log software can read from CAT LSB and USB and this
is OK and what i need.

BUT: If selected DIGL/U reports LSB/USB when my logbook sends USB/LSB
for a frequency change to PowerSDR it changes to DIGL/U and i think this
is not ok.

Is this right?

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] CW Skimmer not decoding I/Q

Thanks for all the replies. I followed a suggestion by Bill, W9OL, and
set the CWS Signal I/O device to Flexradio Audio, which I understand
to be the direct I/Q data from the Firewire driver. This is working
perfectly, and I like that I do not have to change PowerSDR settings
to use VAC for a digimode program like DM780. If there are drawbacks
to this approach, I would appreciate feedback.

Tim, at your suggestion, I tried setting the Win7 Audio device to
2-channel, which I did before starting the radio or any programs, but
it does not work. I must be missing some other setting on VAC, but I
think I will give up for now.

Thanks again to all who replied, both on and off list.

Marshall N5JPJ

[Flexradio] My first contest experience with FLEX-5000A

2010-06-28 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo
Hello friends:
I am a Flex user 3 years ago.
This weekend i have had my first contest experience with the FLEX-5000A.
Is has been in the King of Spain SSB contest.
We have participated in Multi-Multi with 14 operators and 4 running
stations.
Some conclusiones:
-First the good points:
All operators have talked about his excelent selectivity. The FLEX station
has been used only on 40 meters.
40 meters in this contest is very very saturated this is becouse the great
selectivity of FLEX5000 has been great for us.
100% stable. We haven't had problems with stability using 1.18.6.
All operators have liked panadapter (of course).
We have had very good audio and signal reports.
Excelent looking for multipliers.

-Bad points (for me):
In a multi-multi contest, monitor is very very important. We haven't could
use it becouse the delay. All operators told the same: MONITOR is needed in
a contest.
Powersdr needs a FULL-LOCK button. NOT only the frequency, we need a
LOCK-ALL buttons. Involuntarily some operator have clicked on powersdr
buttons and we had some problems with this. Changind mode and some other
settings. In a contest, the non-flex operator must have powersdr locked to
prevent involuntari changes.
Some operator were looking for buttons, but the didn't find them. This
wasn't a problem for me.
The same PC (Mac Book Pro) was used for PowerSDR and Win-Test.

What do you think?
How did you solve the monitor problem?
And what about the lock-all feature?

Thank's a lot.

Thank's for your answer.
Monitor = audio monitor = listen your own voice while in TX.
Monitor has a delay and is really impossible use it.

Congrats on your big showing in the contest.

More than once I inadvertently have mouse clicked and lost a 'RUN'
 frequency.

I agree a 'Full Lock' button would be advantageous during a contest.
I sort of get around it, but using the 'SAVE' and 'RESTORE' buttons.
When I get a run going I click the 'SAVE' button to correct any of my fat
 finger, sleepy eyed mistakes.

I'm not sure what you mean by a 'Monitor'.
Are you saying that you couldn't hear your own voice transmissions?

Hope to work you in the next contest.

W2AIV

-- Original message --
From: Tim (W4TME) t...@flex-radio.com

To all FLEX-5000 and FLEX-3000 users,

There is a new FLEX Firewire driver that is available for upgrade.

===[ Special Instructions ]==

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAVEAT - IT IS VERY IMPORTANT

With the release of the new FLEX Firewire driver, version 3.5.0.7171, we
are changing the way firmware is updated on your software defined radio.
Previously, you executed a file that was known an auto loader. When
you executed this file, the firmware was placed on your PC's hard driver
and then a DOS or Command window was displayed instructing you through
the remainder of the firmware upgrade process. Running this command
prompt based utility cause a few problems for some newer Windows
operating systems which is one of several reasons we are changing the
firmware upgrade method. The new way of updating firmware is by using
an applet embedded in the FLEX Firewire control panel.

Because current FLEX-x000 firmware with a version number of 1.x.x.x was
created with an older version of the Firewire driver, you CAN NOT
upgrade 1.x.x.x based firmware with the new 3.5.0.7171 Firewire driver.

Therefore, you should upgrade your radio's firmware to the latest
1.x.x.x version BEFORE installing the updated FLEX Firewire driver. If
you do not do this or need to revert to a earlier version of firmware
after loading the new driver, the firmware install process becomes a bit
more difficult due to the firmware binary and driver dependency that exists.

When PowerSDR v2.0.0 is released, it will require v2.x.x.x based
firmware that is 100% compatible with the new Firewire driver, so once
the updated version of PowerSDR is released this caveat will no longer
be applicable.

===[ New Features ] ==

1.) The new FLEX Firewire driver, v3..5.0.7171 is fully compatible with
Win7, Vista and XP using either the 64 or 32-bit flavors. It is also
compatible with all released versions of PowerSDR.

2.) The new Firewire driver has feature that can check the compatibility
of your Firewire host controller (Firewire card) with the FLEX Firewire
driver.

With this version of the FLEX Firewire driver, you can run a control
panel applet that will check your Firewire card's chipset and tell you
if it is compatible with the FLEX Firewire driver. It will also inform
you of any missing service packs or Windows system driver configuration
problems. This new feature will take the guess work out of determining
if your Firewire card will work with the FLEX Firewire driver.

To access the new applet, once the driver is installed
1.) Open the Firewire control panel
2.) Click on the SYSTEM button at the top.
3.) Check the Look Online for latest info option
4.) Check the Show Additional Details option
5.) Click on the Scan Now button
6.) A description of the Firewire host controller's chipset(s) in your
system will be displayed indicating the support level and any
configuration error that my be present.

If your Firewire host controller's chipset is not fully supported, then
you should consider getting an adapter with a supported chipset.

[ Upgrading your Firewire driver ]==

When upgrading your FLEX Firewire driver make sure you follow the
instruction very carefully in the following KB article. The screen
displays shown in this article will be a little different because of the
version change, but the process is still the same. It is recommended
that you power off your FLEX-x000 SDR and remove the existing driver and
reboot your PC before installing the new driver.

Re: [Flexradio] Lockup cure - Granite Firewire Cable

2009-10-14 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo
I am looking for a good quality firewire 800 to 400 cable, but i don't find
it.
I am using now a cheap cable with a lot of ferrites.
I have been looking for it in the granite web site without good result.
any help?

Tnx a lot.

2009/10/13 Stu Phillips s...@ridgelift.com

I had a very strange lock up problem with my Flex 5000 on 17m...

After 2+ months of zero RFI problems and the return of (some!)
propagation on 17m, I attempted to load up my WARC band vertical on 17m
and discovered a strange set of symptoms

 * No audio

 * S meter showing -254 dbm

 * Same symptoms on RX2

I resolved the hang by power cycling both the PC and the Flex (and on
the Flex, I mean disconnecting all power for a minute)...

Tried to again load up on 17m, same symptom.

Since it was literally the only band where I was getting the problem, I
surmised that RF was getting back into either the Flex or the PC via the
 FW connection.

I ordered a Granite 6' 6pin-6pin FW cable on Sunday - it arrived
 today...

...and instantly cured the problem! Now the Flex loads up on all bands
 with impunity.

 Another happy Granite cable customer!

Solved.
Problem was kbdmgr.exe from boot camp.
I think all is stable now.
dpc values really low, max is 90.
Dissabled kbdmgr from msconfig an now ... enjoy !!!
I think this is interesting add for the howto.

Re: [Flexradio] Toshiba Satellite U400 (now which laptop)

2009-08-18 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo

Before buy a new laptop i continue working on it.
Some news:
Yesterday i returned to the original windows vista supplied with the
laptop. I uninstalled all extra-software on windows and did a quick
optimice, dissabled unused hardware, etc...

Testing with external expresscard firewire card.

I have latency time a higher than XP, but ... it doesn't go up and it is
stable now. It has been running now 24h without hangs with safe mode 1.

I have max dpc values of 1022 and normally it is half of it.
I know it is a little high, but i don't have to change the laptop now
and quick.

What do you think?

Remember that on a laptop to turn the Power Saving programs off, go
into Power Options of Windows control panel, set for Always On or
High Performance option so that things like hard drives and external

that that Intel's Speed Step or AMD's Cool Run is turned off (this will
slow the processor down) and while in there, make sure in any Power
window, that timers again are turned off.
This for ALL Windows OSs and machines, I feel that Windows Indexing
should be turned off. It's built in to Vista, but in XP it was added
as an add on via an update, so check the Add/Remove programs and make
sure that Windows Indexing 4.0 is not installed (it's a real CPU

either through a slow driver or setting for the local network, best to
disable and see if this makes PowerSDR run smoother..

Thank's Tim for the answer.
I am using Windows XP installed by me.

Tim Ellison escribió:

This is probably your issue. With ACPI motherboards along with the ACPI
Windows HAL, you can't really change the IRQ assignments. Some BIOS allow a
little latitude in this area, most don't.

The reality of this situation is that a lot of laptops are not going to be well suited
for use as a hardware platform for real-time audio processing. Laptops are deigned for
(a) battery life and (b) portability. Those design goals are achieved at the expense of
I/O and processor performance. Occasionally you will run into a laptop that works just
fine. Other times you can get a laptop that has the best specs in the world and is
touted to be a multi media high performance machine and it just plain stinks
up the place when running PowerSDR. I have one of the later machines from Dell.

It looks like you have done all the right things as far as performance tuning.

Is the version of Windows installed on the laptop one that came from Toshiba or did you
load it yourself from a retail CD? I have found that loading the OS myself eliminates
any of the integrator installed fluff programs that they include for
usability or support and those get in the way of a laptop being able to reach it's
highest performance potential. I know Neal (K3NC) is looking into a laptop optimized for
PowerSDR, but due to low demand and high cost may not be offering it as a product.

One other thing you can try is to use the on-board Firewire interface and see
if that works any better.

Good luck.

usability or support and those get in the way of a laptop being able to reach it's
highest performance potential. I know Neal (K3NC) is looking into a laptop optimized for
PowerSDR, but due to low demand and high cost may not be offering it as a product.

One other thing you can try is to use the on-board Firewire interface and see
if that works any better.

Good luck.

[Flexradio] My Flex History

2009-04-26 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo

Hello friends:
I am Ruben EA5BZ from Spain.
This is my short flex history:
Important: I have to run my Flex with a laptop becouse i use in my
expeditions and portable activity.

First i owned a SDR-1000.
I was running it with a little Toshiba Tecra A5.
It was a single core Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz with 1gb of RAM.
It was running fine.

Becouse i liked the flex technology i sold the sdr-1000 and bought a
flex-5000a.
I was running it with the same laptop. CPU load was a little high, but i
hadn't any problem, no audio cuts NO PROBLEMS.

Then i thought update my laptop to can run powersdr better.
I sold my Tecra A5 and bought another Toshiba.
This time a Satellite U400.
It is a Core 2 Duo T8100(2.1 GHz, 800MHz, 3MB L2) with 4Gb RAM, SATA
Disc, etc...

And... then problems begun.
I haven't could run PowerSDR without audio cuts or hangs in this laptop.
I have tried all possible: XP, Vista, External Firewire Card, disable
all hardware (less firewire) ... and no results :-(
After 3 months fighting with the laptop and powersdr i decided sell the
flex-5000a and rest a little of all this.
I bought the another American radio (the one finished in number 3), but
sorry... this radio is not a Flex and i want/need buy another time a
Flex-5000.
My problem is the computer : Do i have to change another time my laptop
to can use with Powersdr?
And...if i sell my new laptop and buy another one. How do i know if this
one will be friend of Powersdr?

I bought the new laptop thinking in the flex radio ... and you see the
result.

What is your opinion / advice ?

TNX a lot.

[Flexradio] Use in expedition.

2009-01-29 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo

Hello friends:
We want use the FLEX-5000A in our next expedition.
When we go to a expedition weight is very important, and we can't have 2
laptops in a station.

We work always in Split.
TX is a fixed frequency and we listen 5 to 10 or 5 to 15 up.
The problem is:
We have to use the same laptop for logging and Powersdr.
The BIG problem is ... How can we change the listen frequency without
change from logging software to PowerSDR ?
Yes, we can use a shuttle pro, but can't change to powersdr in each qso
in a pile up.

Any help?
Any future accesories?

Has anybody done this in a dx-pedition?

This is the only using problem we have had with the Flex's.

TNX a lot.

curiosity is that dpc is really low: around 90uS normally.

Dale Boresz escribió:

Hello,

I have a Dell laptop that reacted the same way -- but I found that if I
disable the wireless network adapter, I no longer have any problems, and
the radio works perfectly and is very stable. I can plug in a network
cable and it still works without issue. If you haven't done so already,
you should download the free DPC checking tool from:

http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

In my case, with the wireless NIC running, the DPC's were well over
16,000 uS and that was causing the cut-outs. Disabling the wireless NIC
drops the average to about 200 uS.

All the firewire optimization is done.

Thy this.

And make sure that the Firewire configuration and the PowerSDR configuration

Thy this.

Do the Firewire optimizations listed in this KC article
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50013.aspx

And make sure that the Firewire configuration and the PowerSDR
configuration match *exactly*. Specifically the sampling rate and
buffer size. For the Firewire configuration, make sure the operation
mode is 1. If that doesn't work, try operation modes 2 and 3.

Using a new database might help too

Subject: [Flexradio] Problem continues...

Hello friends:
2 weeks ago i sent to the list my problem with audio-cuts and hangs with
my flex-5000a and my new laptop.
Problem could be that the firewire inside the laptop is sharing IRQ with
other devices.
I have bought a Texas Instruments expresscard firewire card and the
problem continues.
I don't know what to do now :-(
I am using windows xp.
Windows is optimized only for PowerSDR.
It is a Toshiba dual core with 4 gb RAM.
What could i do?
Is the problem in the laptop?

Please, any help is apreciated.

What is killing the Firewire is probably the Fast Ethernet controller.

A PCMCIA card should do the trick. I have only used ExpressCards. Others may

I think that Jim is in the right.
The problem is that my firewire controller is sharing its IRQ with other

I think i must buy a PCMCIA firewire card to solve this.
I want use my Toshiba laptop with it becouse we want use the flexradio

TNX a lot to ALL for your answers.
My problem with noise in the PS has been solved.
I was using an Alinco DM-330MVE PS.
When i was in TX i could listen a noise inside the PS.
I have changed it for a Diamond GSV3000 Power Supply.
All is fine now, no problems, no noise and when in TX Voltage stays
solid. With the Alinco it was going down around 1 v at full power.

Re: [Flexradio] Advice with Laptop

2007-09-22 Thread Ruben Navarro Huedo
Thank's Neal for your answer.
The laptop has 2gb of RAM.
Graphic card needs 128mb of RAM for the resolution below.
Resolution is 1280x800
Screen is 14 , but i like little laptops.

Thank's 4 your advice.

Neal Campbell escribió:
The two considerations I would have are:
 1. what resolution can the laptop show (how big is the screen)?
 2. how much memory does it steal from the cpu?

The resolution is important to me because it dictates how much display
I can get on the panadapter. If you are running 192k (for instance)
and want to see a lot of it in anything other than 0.5x mode, you need
 some visual landscape.

The memory thing is obvious, if you have a GB of memory but the video
card needs 512M, then you lost half of your memory.

I would bet you are okay with the config, but the two questions above
are some I would want to know before going that route!

 Best regards

parallel port - maybe PowerSDR is reading that for the power levels! It
still amazes me that this appears to fail so gracefully. In my
experience when those pesky 1s and 0s are left to themselves, they tend
 to naughtiness ;)

Question: is it possible to use A/J/O in soundcard-only mode and control
the SDR via the USB-Parallel option or do I have to use the parallel
port? (I can always move the printer off the parallel port to a usb port
if necessary since it talks either way).

one silly question of flex-newbie.
