[Flexradio] Dayton impressions?

2013-05-21 Thread David Decoons
Did anyone spend time playing with the 6700s at Dayton?

I haven't really seen any feedback from Dayton attendees on their
impressions of the 6000 series radios that wete on display.

Also if someone went to Visalia and Dayton, how much has the software
matured since?

I'm eagerly awaiting my 6500 and would like to get feedbak of initial
impressions.

 Jim,

You asked, In your opinion when will the 5000 be gone effectively from the
 scene?

I am not that good at seeing into the future, but I can say the following:

1.) PowerSDR is still going to be developed since it is still needed for
the FLEX-1500 FLEX-3000. As long as PowerSDR is an active development
project, the FLEX-5000 will still be improved.

2.) PowerSDR development will not go away until Flex discontinues both the
FLEX-1500 FLEX-3000. That is not going to happen in the foreseeable
future. To quote someone who is in the know, The FLEX-1500 is selling
 like
hotcakes. Also Flex needs a product in the $1500-$1700 class. Therefore
the future of both radios seems to be assured.

3.) Even when PowerSDR development comes to an end, the FLEX-5000 will
remain a useable radio as long as you can maintain a computer that can run
 PowerSDR.

So, the answer to your question hangs on your definition of effectively
and on factors (such as PC availability) that are outside of Flex's
 control.
I would guess that it is many years away.

I hope so. I love my Flex very much, and it is nice to get a new radio
whenever the software is updated, but I'd really like Flex to make a machine
aimed for the mainstream - the 5000c is almost that machine.

Then again, maybe they do not really want to compete with the big 3. Hmmm...

The back order situation should be resolved by May 1. It was a
combination of higher than foretasted sales and some component
procurement challenges by our contract manufacturer that caused the
rolling back order situation. We will have plenty of FLEX-5000s,
FLEX-3000s and FLEX-5000 available for shipment to fulfill the orders
taken at Dayton.

Dear FlexRadio customers,

It was great to have eyeball QSOs with so many of you in Dayton this year.
We had by far the best Hamvention in all respects. Our booth space this
year was increased by 50% and the number of demo stations by 100%. We had
15 people working the booth and we were busy the entire show. Sales were
Great! There will be a lot of new Flexers on the air in the next couple of
weeks.

We had a great new look in the booth this year thanks to Greg Jurrens and
Lori Hicks (our new marketing manager). Even though we had large crowds,
the flow was so much better this year.

Our FlexRadio dinner was attended by over 100 people this year. All of our
team enjoyed getting to meet those who came and to share a bit of our story.

Thanks to all of you who came to see us this year.

[Flexradio] Dayton and Texans

2011-05-24 Thread Brad A. Steffler

Gerald,

Although I no longer live in the Lone Star State, I take great pride in
being a native Texan. I remember when I was a boy (I am now 62), there
was a sticker in the rear window of Ford sedans. It read, Made in Texas
by Texans referring to the ford Motor Company assembly plant that was
located near Dallas.

I now proudly think of Flex radios as Made in Texas by Texans (adopted
and native). Especially my Flex 5000a, two receivers. It is quite a
radio. Its virtues are obvious as are the Flex 3000, 1500 and PSDR. I, a
former knobs man, cannot understand why anyone would want to spend 2 to
4 times the money for a rig that barely matches a 5000a, only to watch
as it becomes obsolete while the 5000a with a new version of PSDR adds
all sort of funtionality - AT NO MORE COST!!!

I freely admit I am a native Texan bigot but I will say that living in
Mobile, Alabama is a lot like living on the mainland side of Galveston
Bay - just cooler and less (much less) traffic.

Congratulations on a great Dayton Hamvention. Made in Texas by Texans is
rapidly becoming the norm in ham radio. Glad the word is getting out.

That is LITERALLY true. All models are designed, built, tested, and shipped
from Austin to the world.

 Gerald,

Although I no longer live in the Lone Star State, I take great pride in
being a native Texan. I remember when I was a boy (I am now 62), there was a
sticker in the rear window of Ford sedans. It read, Made in Texas by
Texans referring to the ford Motor Company assembly plant that was located
 near Dallas.

I now proudly think of Flex radios as Made in Texas by Texans (adopted and
native). Especially my Flex 5000a, two receivers. It is quite a radio. Its
virtues are obvious as are the Flex 3000, 1500 and PSDR. I, a former knobs
man, cannot understand why anyone would want to spend 2 to 4 times the money
for a rig that barely matches a 5000a, only to watch as it becomes obsolete
while the 5000a with a new version of PSDR adds all sort of funtionality -
 AT NO MORE COST!!!

I freely admit I am a native Texan bigot but I will say that living in
Mobile, Alabama is a lot like living on the mainland side of Galveston Bay -
just cooler and less (much less) traffic.

Congratulations on a great Dayton Hamvention. Made in Texas by Texans is
rapidly becoming the norm in ham radio. Glad the word is getting out.

[Flexradio] Dayton Travel

Anyone traveling to Dayton by road should consider avoiding I-71 between
Louisville and Cincinnati. I have been driving this road every weekend
for the last 6 weeks and there is road construction (in both directions)
on the northern half of it between the KY Speedway and I-75 junction.
Frequently there are several places where it narrows to one lane during
working hours and the traffic is backed up for a mile or more at
multiple locations.

73 and safe traveling,

[Flexradio] Dayton exhibit

2011-04-05 Thread Jeffrey Brown
I'm going to Dayton this year for my first time.  The Flexradio exhibit will be
one I look forward to seeing.  I'm curious if there will be radios for sale
that I could pick out or just display/exhibit only?  I know some of the bigger
vendors/wholesalers will have items to purchase at the show.  If so, would
there be any benefit in delaying purchase of a new radio until the Hamvention,
rather than ordering online ahead of time?  I'm thinking maybe saving on
shipping charges or hamfest special package or something like that.  I guess
some of that would be negated by having to pay local sales tax at Dayton,
whatever that may be.  Either way I'm sure looking forward to getting a new
Flex to replace the old IC-756 around May.  Regards.

booth, etc. this will be one of the busiest Dayton's for me in years.

I look forward to seeing many of you.

I think a special deal should be given to Flex1000 owners.

I bought mine the 1st of Feb., 2007, and now the Flex5000 is out.
How do you think I feel..did NOT know the 5000 was even a dream.

WE are going to give a deal to current SDR1K owners and to those who
purchase a SDR-1000

All SDR-1000 owners will have their warranty increased from 1 year to 2
years provided their radio hasn't been modified.

The SDR-1000 was and still an excellent low cost performer that will
continue to get better because of software upgrades.

A little clarification please!

current SDR1K are you referring to present owners of SDR1000 that
are still in warranty?

As an example I'll use myself, I purchased my SDR1000 during Dayton
last year so it's still under warranty (not for long), will I have an
extra year? Or are you referring to new purchases on the remaining SDR1000's?

Second issue provided their radio hasn't been modified would
modification include lets say improving the +- 15 supply filter to
eliminate noise in the radio? I'm curious because on my radio that
problem was fairly serious.

The warranty will extend from the end of the original 1 year period for
anyone who purchased a SDR1k for whom we have a sales record or other proof
of purchase, for example the original invoice.

WE will deal with modifications on a case by case basis; however, if it
isn't an approved FRS modification it will most likely void the warranty.

The good news is that we get very few radios in for repair. We currently
have none waiting for service and our turn around is normally less than a
week.

[Flexradio] Dayton 2006 Flexer Badges for free!

2006-07-05 Thread Eric Ellison
Hi Flexers!

I really don't think I 'over ordered' these really nice badges designed by
Beppe - IK3VIG, I just didn't have enough time to apply your callsigns at
Dayton or Fredrichschafen! I ended up with about 100 left and they are
absolutely great keepsakes for the greatest of radios and users!!! Now that
I have tons of time, I can focus on this project!

Example:

http://www.hamsdr.com/dnld.aspx?id=224

I will send these USPS *FOR FREE!* to any Flexer who wants to wear them
with pride! Rather than do this in 'onsies and twosies' via e-mail I have
asked Dale - WA8SRA to create a section on Hamsdr which he has as always
willingly done! (!Thanks Dale!).

I'll mail the buttons when we reach 100 or in a 3 weeks whichever comes
first!

To post your order go to:

HTTP://www.hamsdr.com/ ProjectsDayton 'Flexer' Buttons and place your
order for a free button. If you are not a member please join this fine SDR
support website!

This is a great free offer! Usually when you see Free in any message, it is
What's the catch not this time!

While you are at the site, check your TAPR-HPSDR 'expression of interest' in
the coming circuit boards. (They won't be free but will be a Bargain at 2x
the price!)

Happy 5th!

Eric2 - AA4SW - V31SR!

[Flexradio] Dayton

2006-05-20 Thread cbayona
Things are pretty interesting at Dayton, I met some of the Flex gang. I
was looking for a HP signal generator but the prices are outrageous so I
skipped buying one.

My plans were that shortly after Dayton I would purchase a SDR-1000, but
since I could not purchase the signal generator, and they had SDR-1000's
in stock, I went ahead and purchased one.

This was late yesterday as Dayton was closing so I dind't have a chance
to purchase a small power supply and cables so I can play with it while
on vacation. That will be taken care of shortly when I head for the bone
yard.

The weather yesterday was cloudy in the morning and sunny after 10:00AM,
today is sunny also but it might rain in the afternoon.

See ya in the funny papers.

8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Software Defined Radios Open Source Software Defined
Radios- the new wave in radio communications.

Moderator: Gerald Youngblood, K5SDR

Open source Software Defined Radio is no longer just for experimenters, but
for all amateurs regardless of their technical ability and or experience.

This forum will discuss what the amateur community needs to know about the
flexibility, performance, and operation of SDRs from the $15 SoftRock-40 TM
to the top performing FlexRadio SDR-1000(r).

12:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO - GROUNDSWELL TO TIDAL WAVE

Moderator: Eric Ellison, AA4SW, V31SR

Ever since Gerald Youngblood K5SDR published a series of articles in QEX
magazine and offered the first, off the shelf SDR transceiver, Ham's
worldwide have been forging ahead into the Future of Radio. Although not
the only exploration into SDR, at that time, the SDR-1000 and GPL PowerSDR
open source code has been a major engine to spur new exploration. Once again
hams are at the very leading edge of radio.

High Performance Software Defined Radio Project [HPSDR]

Speaker: Lyle Johnson, KK7P

The HPSDR is an open source hardware and software project intended as a
next generation Software Defined Radio for use by Radio Amateurs and Short
Wave Listeners . The design is modular, so an experimenter can choose the
bits and pieces required to implement his own creation. This is similar to
creating something from Lego blocks.

The initial system consists of a motherboard/chassis to contain and power
the modules, along with a few building blocks.

Real radios have Knobs...One at least : The Picastar Project.

Speaker: Harold Johnson, W4ZCB

Pic-A-Star project evolved from a series of articles published in RadCom
Magazine from August 2002 to March 2004, by Peter - G3XJP. The complete
radio is based on a PIC design and is a Software Defined Radio. This radio
has one knob and a Keypad and FANTASTIC specifications. Many people have
built the Star over the past few years. The Circuit Boards and other
project information is open to

everyone. The Yahoo Group supporting this has been in existence Since
November 2003 and is one of the most active SDR groups on the Web.

http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/picastar/?yguid=166674674

SoftRock40, Past, Present, Future

Speaker: Tony Parks, KB9YIG

About a year ago Tony, designed a small transceiver for 40 meters which
derived, I and Q signals from a crystal, a pair of flip-flops and a
transformer. Absolute inexpensive simplicity! Since then, Tony has produced
and shipped thousands of kits worldwide. There appears to be no end in sight
for this $14 dollar V.6 high quality receiver kit. Come hear what is in
store next.

Operating Digital Radio Mondiale with the SDR-1000

Speaker: Mel Whitten, K0PFX

Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is now broadcasting digital programming with FM
sound quality world wide. Rekindle your interest in shortwave listening
using one of the finest receivers for DRM reception, the SDR-1000! A simple
cookbook method will show you how to configure your SDR for optimum DRM
reception of data, text and images using DREAM open source software.

Experiments in transmitting DRM and the ham radio implementation of DRM

(WinDRM) will be demonstrated.

SDR for Emergency Communications

Todd Collins - N2TUN

Software defined radios can change parameters that in a hardware radio are
inaccessible. Disaster communications require that robust, reliable networks
be configured quickly with little or no pre-planning or coordination. SDR
allows you to alter all parameters, automatically in response to changes in
the environment. This ability (cognitive radio technology) is key to the
wireless mesh concept, allowing the automation of physical layer parameters.

The application of these technologies on the UHF and VHF bands by amateurs
can create robust and surprisingly fast ad-hoc data networks.

[Flexradio] Dayton?

2006-03-21 Thread John Melton
It looks like I will be in San Francisco for work during the week
leading up to Dayton so I was thinking of flying back to the UK via
Dayton and spending a couple of days there.

Are there any plans for anyone getting together over lunch/dinner/drinks
during Dayton?

I think I saw that there was going to be a Flex-Radio stand and
presentation.

John g0orx/n6lyt

Re: [Flexradio] Dayton, Friends, and Fun

2005-05-24 Thread Philip Covington
Hi Eric,

It sounds like the show was a great success. Unfortunately I had a
work related problem that I had to no choice but to attend to so I
wasn't able to make it to the show. (I should have turned off my
beeper on Saturday morning...). I did watch some of the video feed on
Saturday night. It was pretty cool to be able to tune in that way.
I ended up giving my tickets to a friend who attended. Hopefully I
will make the next Dayton show.

Phil,

Sorry to hear about the late breaking work. Was looking forward to
meeting in person, but I suppose there is always next year. You are
right about the cool factor of being able to remotely log in and
participate in the usergroup activities. That was right on the cutting
edge. Now if we could have only found some better lighting. We'll have
to work on that for next year. ;)

much, I found it hard

[Flexradio] Dayton, Friends, and Fun

2005-05-23 Thread FlexRadio - Eric

Having just made it back from our nearly 2500 mile trek to Dayton, I wanted
to take a minute to say what a great time I had at the Hamvention this
year. It was great to meet so many of you face to face (finally) and to
shake some hands of our customers.

It is truly an honor to call you (all of you) our customers.
We couldnt ask for a more supportive, enthusiastic group of helpful and
giving people. Thanks to all of those that helped us both at the booth
and in the user group at the Crowne Plaza.
Specifically, I want to thank Eric Ellison (AA4SW) for his service above and
beyond the calling for the usergroup meetings at the Judith Resnick room.
Also, Id like to thank Joe Fisher (sorrydont know your
call) for being the best darn barker at the show. Tall guys rock.
;) There were many others that helped out and Id like to thank
each one of you, but frankly my brain is on auto pilot and Im sure I
would forget someone. Sooothank you to ALL that helped make this
year a flashy success in Dayton. You know
who you are.

To those of you who missed the show, we hope to see you at
future shows. In the meantime, join us for some fun on TeamSpeak and keep
this email reflector full of great ideas.

Sincerely,

Eric Wachsmann KE5DTO
