[Flexradio] Remote operation with iPad and Splashtop

2012-02-20 Thread Michael Young
Has anyone successfully used Splashtop and an iPad to remote their Flex
Radio/PC? i am currently EXPERIMENTING with Splashtop and iPad2 remoting into
a Win7/32 box running the audio via VAC into the Windows audio system (instead
of using Skype). Receive audio works great but I'm having trouble with
transmit audio from the iPad to the Flex.

I have already used Teamviewer/Skype successfully but prefer the Splashtop UI
on the iPad so I'm EXPERIMENTING with that now. Hoping someone's been there
already else I'll just keep hacking away hoping for success.

Thanks,

Mike, WB8CXO

[Flexradio] Remote operation

2012-01-05 Thread Jeff Campbell - G4IUA
I'm experimenting with remotely controlling my 5000A, using PSDR 2.2.3, VAC
4.9, Teamviewer 7 and latest version of Skype. It mostly works, and from my
laptop I can remotely achieve full control of the 5000, just as expected.
The problem is that when I talk into the headset attached to my remote
computer (laptop) the incoming receiver audio almost mutes, i.e. drops
dramatically in level. Rather like a slow AGC action, it then recovers
after a few seconds when I stop talking.

The other problem occurs when I try monitoring my transmit audio, using the
MON button. Bad feedback occurs, so clearly there is something wrong with
my setup.

Any ideas?

Jeff

[Flexradio] Remote operation of PSDR from an iPad 2 using Skype for iPad

2011-08-03 Thread Ronald G. Parsons
Recently, KS4JU published an article in Ham Radio Science entitled “Using the
iPad to Control Your Rig”
http://www.hamradioscience.com/2011/05/using-the-ipad-to-control-your-rig/

Unfortunately, at that time, there was no easy way to get two-way audio to work
using Skype as it was not multi-tasking friendly and AirDisplay on the iPad
supported only audio coming from PSDR – there is no microphone input. I got
around this by running the audio channels on my iPhone using Skype which
eliminated the multi-tasking problem.

Yesterday, Skype released an iPad version of “Skype for iPad” free from the
Apple App Store. This version of Skype for iPad works in the multi-tasking
background.

Once PSDR is running in AirDisplay on the iPad, double-click the Home button on
the iPad, execute Skype for iPad and initiate the call to Skype running on the
FLEX machine (it must be configured to answer automatically). Then double-click
the Home button on the iPad again and go back to PSDR. There, operate PSDR as
usual. You can even do a QuickAudio recording to listen to your transmit audio
stream.

When finished, you can quit PSDR and hang up the Skype connection.

Re: [Flexradio] Remote Operation

2011-05-09 Thread Michael Walker
Eddie

I have done this and there are a few things you need to consider.
Think of it as launching a satellite as you just can't run across the
room to fix it.

The easy part is getting it working. The hard part is keeping it
working. Some think the port forwarding is the hardest part, but it
is the easiest part. You could also run a VPN so that it looks like
it is on your same network (I should try that).

Things to keep in mind

How to reboot the computer if need be
Remote rebooting your internet modem
Reliability of your Router
Lightning
Can you turn your radio on and off remotely

Both Keith (copied here) and myself had done it. You do have to add
some extra toys like remote internet switches, power meters (LP-100 by
Larry Phipps or the Elecraft W2).

I would build your station at home first and get it working. Park it
in another room and then lock it up for a month with the goal of not
every physically touching it. That way it gets to experience some
real world ups and downs. Run a few contests from home (but
remotely).

Remotely, I use HRD, but you can use some RDP (remote desktop) like
VNC or Teamviewer (there are many).

For Audio, I use Skype. Keith likes IP-Sound. Skype just works.
IP-Sound is a bit flaky at times and I wish the author would surface
so he could fix it.

I would hard wire everything and avoid using Wifi (I have my reasons,
but part of that is due to the only company that does good Wifi
hardware is Meru)

The goods news is that it can be done and can be down well.

I would be happy to talk ton Skype sometime if you wish. Or, I'm sure
Keith or I would love to fly down there and help you out! I'd be
happy to let you know where to send the ticket ... LOL :)

Mike VA3MW

p.s. Here is a blog entry from a few years ago on my station. I am
currently rebuilding it.

Re: [Flexradio] Remote Operation

2011-05-09 Thread Luke Rainville (WebMail)

Eddie

Mike has given you an excellent overview. I too run my Flex remotely. Two
locations. One at home and the other in the Nevada wastelands. I agree from
experience Wifi at the remote end is NOT the way to go. The two hours it took
me to pull Cat5 to the home radio room solved much frustration. The Nevada
location has only dish internet access. It is barely fast enough when the
panafall is running.

Additional considerations:

A transmission time out timer can prevent potential disaster. Think of what
might happen if you click the tune mode in CW, the link dies, and your Flex is
happily buzzing away at 100 watts. Currently Flex does not implement a TOT in
PSDR but I have seen it on the want list. Currently I monitor my power supply
current and if it is continuous for more than 90 seconds, the DC supply to the
Flex is interrupted. This is far from elegant, but neither is a smoking radio.

The remote antenna in Nevada is subjected to everything from sandstorms to
snow. I radomed a 5BTV in 2 inch PVC and have not had any issues in the two
years it has been in operation.

CW can be done keyboard style from a number of programs. If you want to send
with local paddles, I can tell you from my own experience that a pair of
Winkeyer USB's linked via the Winkey Remote application work very reliably.
Internet delay is unavoidable, so full break-in is not an option. My delay is
about one full letter. I understand those using RemoteRig experience less.
Either way, full break-in is not going to happen.

I use LogMeIn/Hamachi and thus am able to tunnel IPsound. I use the PCM 16Khz
codec. I also use Skype, to accomodate friends on the road. Skype is reliable,
but I don't care for what it does to CW signals. Someday IPSound is going to be
left behind and I am actively looking for a CW friendly VOIP program.

Best of luck with your remote project!

Luke

Re: [Flexradio] Remote Operation Time Out

2011-05-09 Thread Keith Goobie
Thought I would weigh in after a mention by Mike VA3MW.

As mentioned Len VA3LM and myself have been building remote access to his
environment (for fun and contesting) and we have a few recommendations or
preferences.

1. We use a Steppir beam, making DDutil an invaluable tool. It inhibits TX
when the antenna is tuning - a must have.
2. The steppir Monstir scraps a big piece of sky. We have a heavy duty
rotor and tower, but to make sure we are not fighting any high winds, we
have a weather station connected by USB to give real time weather conditions
- something we consider a must have.
3. DDutil will control timeout and can set power levels, based on band,
mode and if amplifier is turned. This may sound like an advertisement for
DDutil.
4. Remote sound for ssb, Mike states that I like or prefer Ipsound over
over Skype, actually I use both. I have with Ipsound routed the audio over
the Internet channel and done the encoding / decoding at the far end using
HRD or Digipan. The communication is direct, and not through a centralized
Skype server.
5. I prefer accessing all the tools (read toys) using a Virtual Private
Network. More encryption options, and no multiple holes (port forwarding)
in the firewall for applications - just plain less exposure.
6. I use Remote Desktop Protocol (windows) and it is good, but a person at
the radio end cannot shadow what you are doing in case there is a problem.
7. I prefer Teamviewer, it has a LAN access only mode (dovetails nicely
with the VPN) negating the centralized server that keeps track of all
systems and exposing you to hackers. It has a bandwidth adaptive feature,
but can be also controlled. There are many other great features, including
concurrent session viewing for training of your operators.
8. Mike is right on wireless, just plain bad news. This may stir a debate,
but I am looking for reliability in the communications channel.
9. Mike is right on testing, give it a very good road test, before truly
going remote
10. Antenna and rig switching - we are testing and initially recommend an
eightpak from Array Solutions. You can ground the radios to deal with the
lightning that Mike talks about.
11. Backup power - recommend the use of UPS, can be a lifesaver for the PC
and Flex.
12. If it really hits the fan, you need an out of band solution for killing
or resetting the power on your hardware / applications. Someone previously
in the reflector mentioned use of a ethernet / web ac power controller from
Digital Loggers, well so do we.
13. Remote watt - SWR meter is a must have - ours is a LP-100 connected to
DDutil, limits or kills power in high swr situations. It is remotely
controllable.
14. Before you let new people on the system, take them through a few
training sessions.
15. With a remote setup, it is highly likely that you will be running
multiple programs at the same time and you need to be careful of sequencing,
a good batch gui launch utility is recommended - we are having very good
initial success with btrun43. It is also great for sequentially stopping
all your running apps.
16. With multiple apps, you will think to run multiple screens - logical.
Make sure you remote access apps can see both.
17. In case it all hits the fan again, keep all your configurations
documented. With a small amount of remote intervention, I can re-build most
everything remotely.

As Mike states, willing to travel - I am retired.

[Flexradio] Remote operation and New software release

2011-03-11 Thread Harryhahn

Guys, the new software loaded and works fine. The ALC works now, finally
and the output power is under control for the very first time on my 5000.

The only issue I found in the new SDR RC2 software was that VOX on VAC
does not work. Did I miss a new check box?? It seems that VOX was working on
VAC then not working, on different software SDR versions. VOX is really
required for remote operation so you don't have to use the MOX button. Also,
the
latency of Skype or any VoIP connection is such that you can cut off your
words with a manual operation, whereby VOX stops transmitting on the SDR
computer when incoming audio stops.

With respect to remoting your SDR, I have been doing this for years on
numerous conventional and SDR rigs using various remote desktops, including
GOTOMY PC, Pocket Cloud, Microsoft remote desktop, and Teamviewer. Teamviewer
by far is the best as when you use it computer to computer, there is a
BUILT IN VoIP tunnel that allows you to connect to the SDR PC for your visual
and audio without using Skype, etc. Teamviewer also has an IPad app that
works great. The IPad app DOES NOT have the VoIP tunnel working on it
(yet??), so you must use Skype to connect to the home PC. Teamviewer is a
free
app and does not require any static IP address entrees and works from
anywhere!!!

Re: [Flexradio] Remote Operation - Software Needed

2011-03-08 Thread Steve Sterling
Hi Mike and all-- PSDR is always run where the rig is. The data between
PSDR computer and the Flex rig is very fast, lots of it, and must be
near real time. No way that a internet connection or whatever you might
have for the remote access will come close to the speeds and throughput
needed.

So you will need some application to remote in. There are two ways for
that--

a) use an application, many already mentioned by others like TightVNC,
that remotes the entire computer screen. So you can remotely run the
entire computer, all the apps, get to the directories, and run PSDR. I
run this way, and have some delay in the display, but usable. Key the
transmitter by clicking the MOX button. I don't try CW this way.

b) use an application, like Ham Radio Deluxe, that provides a remote rig
interface. You don't see PSDR, can't see the panadapter, but you have
all the normal radio interfaces of an old-fashioned radio like a
tuning dial, filter widths, etc. You can't access anything else on the
computer. PSDR is controlled-- band change, frequency change,
everything-- using Kenwood-2000 CAT commands that run between the Ham
Radio Deluxe and PSDR.

You need to make a decision on which path to take. Actually, I use both.
If I am doing the remote access and have a fast connection, I use option
a)-- the full computer screen. However, if I am sharing my station with
a ham friend, I make them use Ham Radio Deluxe, because I have lots of
stuff on my computer and I am not willing to share it all.

This just gives you the ability to remotely control the radio-- you
still need Skype or whatever for the audio.

Good luck-- it is fun. I am sitting in a hotel on a business trip in
Greenville, SC, and just got off my Flex located in Washington state.

[Flexradio] Remote Operation - Software Needed

2011-03-07 Thread Gary Robertson
I hope to setup my Flex-3000 and base station computer (provided by
Neal) so that I can operate it from a remote site using my Apple MacBook
Pro (running Windows 7) and WiFi. I have great internet access at my
home station site. I am using PowerSDR 2.0.19.

I have seen some discussions about using UltraVNC, GotoMyPC, and LogMeIn
to facilitate remote operation from the laptop to my base station
desktop. I would appreciate any suggestions from fellow Flexers as to
which of these software packages are better for this task, especially as
it relates to latency issues and delays in using PowerSDR from my remote
laptop via WiFi. I know that GoToMyPC has a monthly cost and the others
are free.

I plan on using Skype for the remote audio requirements but would
appreciate any suggestions for alternatives. I look forward to the great
insight of Flexers on this issue.

Re: [Flexradio] Remote Operation - Software Needed

2011-03-07 Thread Mike WA8BXN
When using skype for audio, a different skype account is needed for each
computer (easy to have as many as you want). Each one will both send and
receive audio. Even if you were going to just listen to the remote radio
still two accounts would be needed, on to get the audio sent from the remote
system, and one to receive it on the local computer. I suppose if one was
going to use a digital mode like PSK31 an audio link would not be needed at
all.

[Flexradio] Remote Operation: Flex 1500

Is anyone running their Flex 1500 remotely for CW, SSB, or Digital

Is anyone doing this already? I suppose digital is a matter of adding
VNC or LogMeIn to a working system. How about CW or SSB? No need to
blaze a new path if someone has already identified a good setup.

[Flexradio] Remote Operation Flex-5000A

2009-06-21 Thread Bill Gipps
I'm a new owner of a 5000A and a SPE Expert 1K amplifier. I'm going through
the learning curve - but having a blast as I do!

I'm currently just remoting from the Shack to wherever I am in the house /
yard. I've also accessed it from my car, using my laptop and aircard. I've
got it working, but have some questions / concerns, etc. and can't believe
that I am the first person asking these questions or coming across these
issues. I'm using TightVNC and Skype. Appreciate any assistance that you
can give me?
* Transmit time out - if I lose the link when I am transmitting, it
will continue transmitting - I don't see anywhere that I can specify a
transmit time out? Did I miss it? If it isn't there, are there any
intentions to add it? If no, what are others doing to ensure that the
transmitter doesn't stay on until they can get home to turn it off?
* The power on button - momentary push on - how are others remotely
turning their machines on and off? I really want the ability to power it
down and then back up.
* That itty bitty manual transmit button - tough to push it on and off
when you are driving (sorta kidding - but kinda not). Has anyone come up
with a way to put a 'man-sized' PTT button on the screen, or another
mechanism to give you a positive PTT on and off?
* I've seen references to using two sessions of Skype - I'm guessing
one for audio each way? Has anyone does this and what are the benefits?
* The SPE Expert 1K amplifier (sweet as my kids would say) - I've got
two serial ports tied up - one for CAT control, and the other for the remote
operating software for the Expert - is anyone using and can recommend a USB
to Serial bridge (i.e. multiple serial ports off of a single USB port)?
* Any other peripherals that anyone could recommend that would make
the remote operation of a Flex radio station better, safer and more
effective?

I would also appreciate any other comments, advice, 'learnings',
pointers, etc. from anyone that is remoting a Flex radio station. I'm
currently working on an option with a farmer to get access to his 75 acre
farm. I would look at putting up a couple of towers, and use a shipping
container as a remote shack. It is about 20 minutes from my residence. I
travel a lot, and really like the idea of being able to access my station
from anywhere I can get on the Internet.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated

This is, I think, the biggest hassle for remote operation as it is the
only problem that is ultimately unfixable in software.

(We can implement software timeouts if we need them, for instance).

It would be nice to have an official Flex upgrade for those of us who want
it. Would there be enough demand, I wonder? Or, would it be enough to
simply have a simpler, physically compatible switch?

It could actually be as simple as an ordinary off/on switch as per the SDR
1000 and then manage remote power on/ power off external to the box, which
I imagine has about a hundred inexpensive, well-proven solutions out
there.

All we would really need in that case is for Flex to approve some switch
or other that we could put in without voiding the warranty. There must be
one with sufficient reliability that fits the same hole in the case and
maybe even has a LED in it.

I must confess that this is a problem I don't have today -- but could
tomorrow.

I can readily imagine (as I age) moving to an apartment or a condo where I
would have to get a piece of land elsewhere to put up my antenna farm.

On that day, this kind of thing becomes acute.

ddutil has a transmit time-out feature. I know it works with the
digital modes where they assert PTT through ddutil but not sure it
would work for you clicking on the MOX button to transmit. If you are
using VOX and lose the link, the radio should unkey as there will be
no more audio coming in.

* The power on button - momentary push on - how are others remotely

I would like to see an answer for this one too. It looks like the
internal processor can turn the power on/off so perhaps there is a
command that could come over the FlexWire or from PowerSDR via the
FireWire (MIDI) that would do it too.

Sounds like you need separate hardware for that.

ddutil. ddutil acts as a CAT fan-out box so all your different devices
can be connected to give information to PowerSDR or get it from
PowerSDR. You can use several different serial ports connected to
different devices, e.g. amp, tuner, rotator, etc., each with its own
serial port. You would have PowerSDR send the band info to the SPE
Expert 1K amp through ddutil. I believe that there is now a mode that
allows the Expert 1K amp to provide level control back to PowerSDR as
well.

* Any other peripherals that anyone could recommend that would make
the remote operation of a Flex radio station better, safer and more
effective?

Someone to sit at the console and monitor? ;-)

[Flexradio] Remote Operation

2009-06-18 Thread Ed Helms
Here is a FYI on my remote setup...I bought and still have a Omni IV ( that
is for sale )and set it up for remote operation per their advertisement and
techs that told me how great it would work remote...after 6 months of myself
and a guru IT friend of mine working with it, we still had continued pauses
and burps in the audio whether it was on receive or transmit. I purchased
the Flex 5000A and it only took me a couple of days to get familiar with it
and get the remote working perfect. I spent the week at my beach house and
worked my Flex remote and no one even asked me if I was not at my home. They
never knew until I told them. I also use the remote while in my mobile with
my Dell mini laptop and a broadband card with a external antenna on the
roof. It is so nice to be able to ride down the road and listen to quality
qso's from my home dipoles and beams. No static on receive from the standard
hf noise. Jump from 160 to 6 . ..Wow...thanks to all who have worked so hard
to bring the Flex to where it is today. It has really made amateur radio
exciting again.

Got bored tonight so decided to play around with my new iPod Touch 32 gig 2nd
generation.

Using the Ipod in ear headphones with built in mic, SKYPE for the iPod Touch,
and Mocha VNC Lite I now am able to operate the Flex 5000A via the iPod Touch
wherever I have a wifi connection.

One note - you will also need to install a program called backgrounder on the
iPod to keep the programs active when in background.

Have to get a picture and send it in to Flex!

[Flexradio] Remote operation of Flex 5000A using iPod Touch!

2009-04-03 Thread Dave
Got bored tonight so decided to play around with my new iPod Touch 32 gig
2nd generation.

Using the Ipod in ear headphones with built in mic, SKYPE for the iPod
Touch, and Mocha VNC Lite I now am able to operate the Flex 5000A via the
iPod Touch wherever I have a wifi connection.

One note - you will also need to install a program called backgrounder on
the iPod to keep the programs active when in background.

Have to get a picture and send it in to Flex!

[Flexradio] Remote Operation

2008-02-22 Thread Harryhahn

I operate my own Internet remote, but I have an older ham who is now living
in an antenna restricted apartment asking if there is an Internet accessible
remote club station. He is computer savvy. I would appreciate any info
someone would pass on to me.

Thanks
Harry

[Flexradio] Remote Operation of the Flex-5000A

2008-01-26 Thread Lee A Crocker
I haven't done this outside of my intranet, but I can do this anywhere on my
network with either the 5K or the SDR-1K. There are some latency issues. Some
fine tuning of the server and the client in terms of screen bit depth etc.
helps this considerably. I have done it cross platform from Linux to Windows
as well. The client I use is tight VNC and IP sound. I have used Skype also
both work fb. I use VAC to make the connections between the radio and the
audio server.

When the flex wire protocol gets going, the sky is the limit as far as I can
see. The flex wire will be able to handle many chores even unto aiming a beam.
I have my SDR-1K all linked up to my antenna switching so it automatically
selects the correct antenna and I have an Acom 2K which autotunes, so its
pretty much click and talk from anywhere in the house. I also use a LP-1
digital watt meter that has a program that links to the computer, so I can
watch the power out and SWR from the remote as well. I do not have the Acom
hooked up to the 'puter yet but that is also possible. I also have DX lab
running so the packet and digital modes are also alive. I never thought about
CW Get and CW type, I will have to give that a try. This is fun to experiment
with and very easy to get going and will add another dimension to your radio
enjoyment.

[Flexradio] Remote Operation of the Flex-5000A

2008-01-25 Thread Jim, W4ATK
I was talking to a couple of my friends, Bill and Fritz, who are both
proud
owners of 7800s. Bill travels a bit and was interested in remote operation
of his 7800. This peaked my interest and yesterday morning I set out to
remote my Flex-5000A.
I found a free product on www.logmein.com that provided the necessary
function for control of a remote PC ( I know, I am cheap ). I installed the
client on the XP machine that runs the radio and set the remote software up
on the MacBook Pro (requires a plug in for Safari). Security is pretty
good requiring a user name and password for Logmein and a second password to
access the remote computer.
With very little effort, I was moving about the console, changing bands,
audio settings, and so forth on the Power SDR Console from my Mac.
At this point I installed Skype on the Mac (it was already on the PC)
and I
was in business.
I was suprised at how easy it was and confirmation of my efforts
occurred
this a.m. as I used the remote to keep my sked with Bill and others.
There is quite a bit of latency in the control of the 5000, so your
contact
needs to be aware that you are on a remote. CW operation using CWGet and
CWType remotely with the 5000 was flawless. On a good clean signal you do
not even need the audio connection. :-)
