Re: [Flexradio] Two branches of interest to increase your confusion
The new XML data storage structure is MUCH better than Access. The reasons are: 1.) It isn't tied to a Microsoft product (proprietary) 2.) It isn't tied to a Microsoft product (if you haven't guessed, this is really important) 3.) Allows PowerSDR to work with Vista and Win7 x64 operating systems 4.) Allows for easy editing with a simple text editor and not a program you have to buy from Micro$oft 5.) A variant of XML, JSON is going to be used in the new SDR architecture. What everybody needs to do is to realize that this is a FIRST STEP in replacing the Access database as the database storage facility in PowerSDR. Please give everyone some time to adjust to the changes. It will take Ray a little bit of time to modify his DataTransfer tools to accommodate the new XML format. He didn't know the XML centric version of PowerSDR was being released until everyone else. All of these changes are done for specific reasons. While the sort term benefit may not seem all that great on our journey to SDR nirvana, the long term benefit will be very apparent when we get there because it allows us to get there. (there is a Zen riddle in there somewhere). -Tim -Original Message- From: Bruce Mills - KL7JDR [mailto:kl7...@alaska.net] Sent: Friday, May 08, 2009 11:36 PM To: Tim Ellison Subject: RE: [Flexradio] Two branches of interest to increase your confusion Hi Tim, I am running Windows 7 RC1 build 7100 32 bit. Sorry about my comment, Narrow viepoint. Now i see the big picture. Also , should have added , that this version VS2008 SVN: 3033 , is the most stable one that i have used. It uses less cpu and lower buffers. Very stable on Windows Vista and Windows 7, With Windows 7 being better. I am using a very old computer. I am always wondering why XML is considered the swiss army knife to all data storing and data exchange design challenges. It is certainly the most used format, and a wealth of tools exist for manipulating data. Now if there are proper schema definitions coming with the XML file those tools will allow for uniqueness tests and such. Looking forward to check out the code. VS2008 does indeed now use xml for the database entries and .NET 3.5 is required. Bob Tim Ellison wrote: HOT DIGITY DOG! NO MORE ACCESS DATABASE. HOOTIE WHOOO! I think I'll organize a wake for it!
