If you are referring to my FlightGear PPA, then there is a problem upgrading to
2.12. I had tried the upgrade, but seeing that it failed, I then disabled the
PPA in the hopes that no one else would get the buggy packages. I should have a
fix out within hours.

It wasn't that the IAR80 was inactive. The main developer removed the

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Howto download aircraft ( and others data ) from Git

2013-09-03 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
The answer was posted a while back. In the short term (immediately),
the only ways to get the full fgdata bundle is to either use git or
download the 5 GB bundle and update from that, both of which are not
possible*. In the long term, according to James, the repo will be
reorganized such that the sizes are smaller.

*: Technically, a torrent download of the bundle would allow you pause
and resume, so if there are cut-outs, you won't have to restart. That
being said, downloading 5 GB on a phone line will take a long time (a
week?).

Actually, scratch that; it seems FlightGear allows the --fg-aircraft switch
to specify multiple root aircraft directories, although the man page needs
to be updated to specify this (it currently says it's only used by UIUC).

That might help, or the ability to specify multiple directories for the
aircraft, like how it's done with scenery. If need be, I can have just
FlightGear for Ubuntu built with a patch to allow multiple directories for
aircraft.

For what it's worth, I have a
PPA<https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/flightgear-prerel>that
is tracking the 2.12.0 branch that includes the default aircraft and a
few other aircraft that can be used by Ubuntu and other distros that
use/allow Ubuntu's repos and/or PPAs. However, it installs these files to
/usr/games and /usr/share/games, which some people frown upon because it
doesn't allow easy changes.

You could use one of the 777's as a heavy aircraft.

Also, what about performance with different views (pilot view vs chase
view), and having the panel open vs. closed in pilot view?

Use "git log --before -MM-DD --after -MM-DD" to see the comment
of the change, commit ID, and the date the change was made. You can
leave out before or after switch if you want to. Then use the commit ID
in "git reset --hard ". You only need the last 7 characters
of the commit ID. This changes your working tree to match the tree
after the commit.

On an Intel HD 3000 Integrated Graphics Card with Mesa (note that Intel
is generally worse than Nvidia and AMD), I have roughly the same frame
rates with ALS on and with ALS off; it doesn't seem to make much of a
difference in terms of frame rates. That being said, in both cases, my
frame rates on the ground are less than 10 and frame rates in the sky
are around 15-20, with some pauses (when it is loading scenery or
reading airport files, I'm assuming). This seems smooth to me.

unusably slow for you. That won't change when you run it under the
Rembrandt rendering framework because you have to run pretty much the
same operations, just inserted into different stages of the rendering
process. Thus, if the algorithms of ALS are unusably slow now, they will
remain so if you run them under Rembrandt. Despite of what you may
think, Rembrandt is not a magic tool making everything run faster -
deferred rendering has specific advantages over the default (e.g. for
multiple light sources for instance) and specific disadvantages (e.g. no
acceleration due to interpolation across triangles for a coarse mesh as
for terrain).

The autopilot and route manager are working for me in Boeing 777-200,

[Flightgear-devel] Winds Aloft data

2013-06-14 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
In the Fetch live aloft data
 instructions,
the Jeppesen weather service is used. However, the weather data is no
longer free, and the article needs to be updated. The NOAA's Aviation
Weather Center has free text winds aloft data for all available airports
in one URL. However, the format used here is different than the format
used in the script. Could someone update the wiki page to use the format
used by the NOAA? I've made a command to get the text weather data from
the page:

|wget --quiet --output-document=-

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Some Help

2013-06-10 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
(I'm assuming the basics of Mac are the same as Linux.)

If you are copying the files to a system directory (basically anywhere
outside your Home directory), you'll need to use sudo in Terminal.

Alternatively (at least for the scenery), you can tell FlightGear to use
scenery that are located elsewhere in addition to the included aircraft
and scenery. To do this, when running FlightGear, for the fg-scenery
parameter, append your scenery directory with a colon. For example, you
would type fgfs --fg-scenery=:.
Replace with the path to the base scenery, and
with the path to your scenery. Note that the given
folders must have the folders Airport, Objects, and/or Terrain.

[Flightgear-devel] Automatic value copying in Internal Properties browser

2013-06-09 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
It seems that in the latest git version, when clicking on a value in the
Internal Properties browser, the value no longer automatically gets
copied into the text box. This makes it a little hard to slightly
change, for example, the position of the aircraft.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Base fgdata

2013-06-08 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
The primary increase seems to be in Textures.high/Terrain. In 2.10.0,
the size of the folder was 181 MB, while in the current git version, the
size of the folder is 300 MB. Some of the increases seem to be png
versions of dds texture files and to autumn versions of the textures.
The next big increase seems to be in Textures.high/Terrain.winter, with
folder sizes of 36 MB vs 51.6 MB. The poi.dat.gz is 11 MB. The Models
folder seems to have actually decreased in size by 7 MB (234 MB vs 227 MB).

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Updating Flightgear and Simgear Shared Builds

2013-06-01 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
I'm just being cautious. Currently, I'm rebuilding Flightgear after
every Simgear update, but if it's not necessary, then I can get rid of
a rebuild.

Using ldd, it does seem that it's considering Simgear as a dependency,
so it seems safe to not do a rebuild.

[Flightgear-devel] Atmospheric Light Scattering during nighttime and the Sun

2013-05-18 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
Hi,

Photos:
https://plus.google.com/photos/103387392510447269112/albums/5879491608548672161?authkey=CK30jsGwlYPEwgE

By any chance, is this a bug when using atmospheric light scattering?
This was taken over the east US, and local time was around 8 PM. The sun
appears to show from below the ground. I have an Intel GPU, though, so
it could very well be the GPU's fault.

That being said, in the third picture, it appears that the sun halo is
blocked in regions where tiles are loaded, so I might have to increase
the draw distance. Is there a way to do this?

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Atmospheric Light Scattering

2013-05-02 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
He's asking you from what view you take the screenshot. Do you take it
in the fly-by view? Do you take it in the model view? What is the
zoom/FOV that you use?

There are several ways/views from which I can take a screenshot of a
Boeing 777. I can take it from the model view, where I'm positioned
right behind and above the plane with a zoom/FOV of 40. I can take it
from the co-pilot's seat looking at the cockpit panel. I can take it
from a passenger seat looking at the left wing.

[Flightgear-devel] Linux nightly builds

2013-04-17 Thread Saikrishna Arcot

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I'm working in a local version of Jenkins to set up a nightly build for
Linux Ubuntu and allow them to be uploaded to a PPA, so that
non-developers can test the nightly builds. Since Launchpad doesn't
allow pre-built debs, I'm planning on doing a test build to make sure it
compiles in the first place and then uploading the source code to
Launchpad for it to compile. Eventually, I'm hoping that the official
releases can be prepared and uploaded to Launchpad from Jenkins itself.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Improved usability

2013-04-11 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
I haven't tried the latest Git, but just in my opinion, if using
Flightgear on a laptop, holding-down right-click to pan around can be
bit of a pain. I would personally rather have the click-move-click
method.

Then again, not that many people probably use Flightgear on a laptop,
and I haven't tried the latest Git.

So the XML files cannot be converted to PO/POT?

What if the headings (the XML tags in this case) were taken from the
file and used in the translation files? But then it would probably
still be under the GPL license.

Hi all,

I saw that Flightgear is only translated into eight languages, and am
planning to upload the translation files to Launchpad to allow
translators to translate them into other languages. I will have to
manually convert the XML files into PO/POT files for Launchpad to use
and will convert them back into XML. The translations will be released
under a BSD license, so (from what I understand) it's at least partially
compatible with GPL. Do I have permission to upload the translations to
Launchpad to allow other translators to work on them? Also, can only
languages that use the Latin script (not Chinese, Russian, etc.) be used
in Flightgear?

The window says that the plug-in is available on Windows and Mac OS X
10.6 and later.

For the record, Google Earth has had a very basic flight simulator
within the program. Based on the description, it looks like they added
weather, some aircraft, instrumentation approaches, autopilot, and
realistic flight models to that. The downside I see here is that you
have to be online.

[Flightgear-devel] fgdata compression

2013-03-13 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
I have a suggestion/proposal for the compression method of the fgdata
package: Instead of using tar.bz2, we can use tar.xz (XZ is based on
LZMA) to get a lower compression ratio. Based on comparisons done by
other people, here are the effects:
+ Less time for decompression compared to bzip2.
+ Smaller file size (higher compression)
- More time for compression
- More memory usage for compression /and/ decompression (around 300-500
MB during compression at highest compression level (9))

I re-compressed the 758 MB bzip2 file into a 690 MB xz file with default
compression settings. The entire process took 15 minutes on my computer.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Ubuntu repositories

2013-03-07 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
The Ubuntu process/policy is that all software for a particular distro
(it looks like you might be 12.04 or 11.10) is frozen right before the
release, and only security updates and major new releases are updated.
However, it is possible to request a newer version to be submitted into
the main Ubuntu archives. The only thing here is that users will
manually have to enable adding unsupported software from Software
Sources and configure it to have backported software to be
automatically installed
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports) I'll look into
updating FlightGear through Backports.

On another note, I have the latest FlightGear version available for
Oneiric and above in my PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/flightgear). You'll have
to manually add the PPA (see the page for instructions).

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Keyboard bindings

2013-03-04 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
Just my 2 cents here.

The primary reason I use the FoV/x binding is to see, read, and be able
to use everything (or as much as I can) in my cockpit. Personally, I
would rather scroll up/down, but that seems to have limits, as I can't
zoom in as far as I want to by scrolling, but can using the key
binding. There's also a limit for zooming out. Reaching the limit
causes the FoV to be set back to the default. If the limit was removed,
then I personally wouldn't mind having the key binding removed as well.

It automatically updates every week or so (or whatever the user's
update settings are), and there's not much manual intervention required.

The downsides are that this is for Ubuntu only (and maybe alternate
Ubuntu distros (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.)), changes require sudo
privileges, and some builds may not work correctly.

Just to chime in, wouldn't rendering the base tile be "easier" for the

fgfs-base has been updated. I recommend that for now, you run "sudo
apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get install fgfs-base", so that you only
have to download 540 MB instead of about 750 MB.

Note that the Software Updater will still annoy you to update the other
packages, even though there were no changes there.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] FlightGear 2.10.0 release on Ubuntu

2013-02-19 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
It's sort of a yes and no. Technically, the current configuration
builds "smaller" packages (where the largest package is about 500 MB,
and the package which must be downloaded for the fix). However, based
on what I'm seeing, with the current configuration, if one of the
packages change, then all of the packages change and have to be
downloaded; that being said, I'm still hoping that only fgfs-base
package will be recorded as changed.

I suppose that you could forcibly say "sudo apt-get install fgfs-base"
as a temporary solution once the package is published, but the package
manager will still annoy you.

2013-02-19 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
You can use https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/flightgear.
There's a section on the page for users to easily add the PPA
(basically the "location" of the packages) to their system.

This applies to Ubuntu Oneiric (11.10), Ubuntu Precise (12.04), Ubuntu
Quantal (12.10), and Ubuntu Raring (13.04) (this is a development
version, so there may be few, if anyone, on this). If there are people
who are on an earlier version of Ubuntu, then I can easily add a
package for that version.

2013-02-18 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
You're missing the ".git" part at the end.

Also, keep in mind that that will get the master branch, which seems to
be currently at 2.10.0.

You can get the flightgear and simgear gits at
https://gitorious.org/fg. I think the next branch is the development
branch.

[Flightgear-devel] FlightGear 2.10.0 release on Ubuntu

2013-02-18 Thread Saikrishna Arcot
Hi all,

I just wanted to let everyone know here that I created a PPA for
FlightGear on Launchpad and have compiled and uploaded FlightGear 2.10.0
for Oneiric and above. Unfortunately, the fgfs-base isn't available at
the moment, so users will have to download that separately. The link to
the PPA itself is
https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/flightgear. Users can follow
the following steps to use the PPA and flightgear:

 1. Add ppa:saiarcot895/flightgear to their list of sources, either
using Software Sources or "sudo add-apt-repository
ppa:saiarcot895/flightgear".
 2. Do an update using "apt-get update".
 3. Either use Synaptic to install FlightGear or do "sudo apt-get
install flightgear". Both will automatically install SimGear as well.

I've installed the version I uploaded and things seem to be running
well. I have encountered two problems so far. One is that I don't see
any AI aircraft, but I'm not sure if that's just me or if it's a bug.
Another is that some patches of terrain are dark, but as I get closer,
they turn light and can be seen again. I'm on an Intel GPU, so I'm not
sure if it's because of that.

Anyways, I've uploaded some screenshots from 2.10.0 here
<https://picasaweb.google.com/103387392510447269112/FlightGear2100?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCKXaocKSqp2G_wE&feat=directlink>
(the black plane is, I'm assuming, a GPU bug since 2.8.0).
