Correct.

The official place for binaries is NuGet, if you want them from a specific

[fluent-nhib] Re: Dead links on fluentnhibernate.org/

2012-04-26 Thread James Gregory
Sounds like you've got some browser/proxy caches you need to refresh. Those
links should be 404ing, but the main page doesn't refer to them any more.

The main website should look like this (with the fluentnhibernate.org

If you're not seeing that, you've got an overzealous cache somewhere.

+1 to what David and Jeff said.

My main focus for FNH is to clean the codebase up (there's been a lot of

round. Hopefully those two goals will make it easier for other people to
help out if they want to. Any help is always appreciated.

[fluent-nhib] Re: Any idea when new version ( 1.3.0.717) of NuGet package for FNH will be released

Sorry everyone for my absence. I've been largely neglecting FNH lately
primarily because I'm in the middle of a big life change; aka, I've moved
to the other side of the world, changed jobs, and everything else that
comes with that.

I'll try to put together some kind of official statement, but it boils down
to this:

Is FNH dead? No.
Is FNH neglected? Yes.
Will it remain so? Perhaps.

I don't have the time or desire right now to run the project at the pace I
have been doing for the past few years, but I also have no desire to let
the hard work of myself and others fall apart. Everything is still crazy
right now, but once I get settled again I do intend to pick things up.

[fluent-nhib] So what's going on here?

2012-01-27 Thread James Gregory
Hey everyone,

I've noticed people are starting to get a bit restless around here. I
suppose you all deserve a bit of an explanation.

Fluent NHibernate is not dead; however, it is severely neglected. The
reasons I'll go into in a moment, but I don't intend on letting the project
die; it may just have to remain in its neglected state for a while longer.
The pull requests are occasionally being dealt with, but it's only me here
now and I just simply don't have the time to deal with it.

Help would be appreciated, but I don't expect it. If anyone wants to, get
in touch (james @ jagregory.com); I'm more interested in project management
help than code right now, as we're still fairly active on that front
(contributors, that is).

There isn't really a roadmap at this point in time, due to lack of
activity; but I've always planned on getting a 1.3/4 release out then
pushing on to a cleaner-tighter 2.0 release; when that'll happen is
anyone's guess right now.

Personal stuff: feel free to skip if you've heard enough. So the reason for
all this slacking is that I've quit my job in London, relocated to
Australia, and joined ThoughtWorks in Sydney (and now temporarily in
Melbourne). It's a big move, quite literally halfway around the world. I'm
having to reestablish myself over here and that's a very time consuming
experience; new country, new job, new city, new friends, etc... My
priorities have shifted entirely away from non-essential projects and once
the day is over, the last thing I want to do is boot up the VM and crank
out some code. I hate to dissapoint people, and I hate to neglect FNH, but
my priorities have (temporarily) changed.

Hope that at least clarifies what some people are thinking. Feel free to
ask any questions and I'll do my best to actually answer.

Cheers,
James

P.S. Mailing list messages - sorry about that. Google Groups apparently
decided to stop notifying me of new messages. All outstanding ones have
been approved.

Try removing your Access call all together. There was a change made around

depending on your class design. I'm guessing something isn't quite working

Re: [fluent-nhib] How to map a char to bool?

2011-09-15 Thread James Gregory
I'm guessing you could probably create your own subclass of CharBooleanType and
just override the TrueString and FalseString properties to be what you need
them to be.

However, I think this is exactly what query substitutions was designed for.
Certainly most places I've seen have had 1 and 0 specified in the
substitutions.

Both should work though.

Re: [fluent-nhib] Re: How do you figure out NHibernate.DuplicateMappingException?

2011-09-07 Thread James Gregory
The two stack traces show that the first is running through the automapper,
and the second just a regular persistencemodel. I can't remember this part
off the top of my head, but it does sound like it's intentional.

It's quite difficult to give you any more help without either seeing how
you're adding the mappings, or getting my hands on a reproduction. FNH
*should* prevent duplicates from being added to NH, but there's obviously a
hole in that defense; if you're seeing the same assembly in ScannedSources
multiple times, then it sounds like you're adding it twice (or we've got a
bug!). Again, hard to tell which without actually seeing something, I'm
afraid.

Ah, I think we've got a hole in our API here. In a non-automapping scenario

was already available.

Does the deprecated method still work?

[fluent-nhib] Updated Nuget package

I've just pushed an updated Nuget package which supports NHibernate 3.2.
It's not the official 1.3 release of FNH, but it should keep you going for
now.

[fluent-nhib] Re: Use Actual SqlConnection Instead Of A ConnectionString

2011-08-11 Thread James Gregory
You can't do that, and I wouldn't recommend it even if you could. A
SessionFactory is something that stays alive for the entire lifetime of your
application, you wouldn't want to keep a single connection open for that
period. Instead, if you need to use an existing connection, you can pass it
to the SessionFactory.OpenSession method, which is a much more sensible
place to do it.

Re: [fluent-nhib] How to define the tablespace in ORACLE??

I'm not certain what a tablespace is, but it sounds like what the rest of

instead of dot notation in the table name.

[fluent-nhib] Update/sitrep

2011-07-21 Thread James Gregory
Ok, hello everyone! I just wanted to give a sitrep, because I know there's a
few people getting impatient with my response times.

Basically, I don't have the time to dedicate to FNH as much as I used to.
Combine that with exhaustion (and some laziness) and that's why things have
been pretty quiet around here. It's definitely not deliberate, and it won't
stay like this forever, but for the forseeable future my presense is going
to be limited.

I'm behind in my pull request management, so I apologise to anyone who's put
work in and I haven't merged it yet. I'll get on top of that as soon as I
can. Once that's done ill start running through the bugs and regressions
from 1.2, but I have no timeframe for that. Time is a rare commodity right
now so I cant promise anything. I'll get onto it eventually, but if there's
something you're desparate for you should try fix it yourself and send me a
pull request, otherwise it'll get done on my schedule.

What would be ideal is if some people fancied stepping up and helping out.
I'm not asking for your first-born child, just lending a hand fixing bugs or
even just writing test cases to help me make the most of my time. Once I get
on top of the pull requests, we could get quite a nice little process going.
If someone (or somebodies) wanted to step up and become a co-maintainer(s),
that'd be awesome, but I don't hold out much hope for that.

If anyone is interested in helping out, reply here or in private and I'll go
over what needs doing and so forth.

I apologise for the lack of updates and minimal support, but there's not
much I can do to change that right now.

Any questions, feel free to ask (and I'll try my best to reply!).

James

[fluent-nhib] Re: how to set data types and sizes with the method Composited_Id?

2011-07-21 Thread James Gregory
What do you mean by when performing the mapping? Have you exported the
mapping and seen that it's 255, or are you generating your schema from the
mappings? If it's the latter, it's probably a quirk with the schema
generation and/or database dialect you're using rather than a mapping issue.

As for the type, there's a Type method, though I'm not certain if it will
work as you need. We probably need to support the sql-type attribute here.
If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll create an issue for it.

[fluent-nhib] Re: Update/sitrep

2011-07-21 Thread James Gregory
I've migrated our issues list to Github, alongside the
code. https://github.com/jagregory/fluent-nhibernate/issues

Our current milestone is the 1.3 release, which you can see
here:
https://github.com/jagregory/fluent-nhibernate/issues?milestone=1state=open

If anyone wants to help out with managing these, that would be great. Even
better would be if people could fix some of these.

You're welcome to create issues for bugs you find, or features you need, but
please try to make sure you're not duplicating an existing issue; I'd like
it even more if you could send a pull request with a fix for your issue,
that would make things a lot speedier. If you can't provide a pull request
with a fix, at least a failing test would make my life a lot easier.

Re: [fluent-nhib] Re: How do I map a table join in NHibernate / Fluent NHibernate that uses a unique key instead of the primary key?

2011-06-02 Thread James Gregory
Bad news, I'm afraid.

In theory, you should be able to put a property-ref attribute on the key in
the join and point that to the property in your MemberCv table (I'm not
certain we actually expose that in FNH, probably for the following
reason...); however, it would be ignored because of a bug in NH:
NH-1452http://216.121.112.228/browse/NH-1452

I've just done a test, and NH just flat-out ignores the property-ref when
used in a join.

An alternative, as you said, would be to use a component or many-to-one; you
could use a private field and have the properties just delegate. Not nice,
but I don't see any other option until that bug gets fixed.

[fluent-nhib] Re: Inheritance Mapping -- One Table for all subclass

2011-05-23 Thread James Gregory
Your DiscriminatorValue call isn't valid, what are you trying to achieve
here? The DiscriminatorValue should be a constant not the Id of the entity,
as it's used by NHibernate so it knows which class to instantiate when
fetching the data. If you don't specify a DiscriminatorValue, FNH will
default to using the subclass name as the discriminator.

Thought so. The 1.2 release was the first nuget package that was official

[fluent-nhib] Re: FluentNHibernate nuget package dependencies

2011-05-13 Thread James Gregory
Remove those dependencies yourself afterwards.

Fluent NHibernate should work out-of-the-box, without you having to
download/install anything else manually. If we were to depend on the
NHibernate package, our users would have to manually install a proxy factory
themselves, *every time*. I'd rather inconvenience a small subset of users
who want to use an alternate proxyfactory, than inconvenience everyone.

I'd be happy to make changes if you can propose a solution which doesn't
require manual intervention from FNHs users, and doesn't result in me
maintaining multiple nuget packages. Or, if you can prove Linfu is more
popular than Castle, I'd happily make that the default in the next version.

I just committed a change that'll make FNH pick up internal ClassMaps. This
is something that always catches people out, so it's about time I changed it
:)

If you're into cutting down on your keywords, FNH will also instantiate a
classmap via a private constructor, so you can cut out a few
public/privates.

class MyMap : ClassMapMy
{
  MyMap()
  {

[fluent-nhib] Re: Problem Mapping .NET ISet With Automapping

2011-05-01 Thread James Gregory
Hi Mohamed,

What version of FNH are you running?

1) Definitely sounds like an oversight. Ideally there should be a way for
the user (yourself...) to control what FNH considers a Set, rather than us
having a hard-coded list of collection types.

2) What part of the code is this? Even though FNH doesn't recognise ISet, it
definitely does work with HashSet.

You should be able to use HashSet in the place of ISet and have it work.
It's not ideal, but it should work until we can get a fix out.

[fluent-nhib] Re: Automapping Read Only Properties

2011-05-01 Thread James Gregory
Automapping is really going to struggle to make sense of your DisplayTitle
property. As it's a getter only, it'll try to find a backing field that
matches; off the top of my head, I don't know what it'll do if it doesn't
find one.

The Access.ReadOnlyProperty() method looks suspiciously broken. I'm under
the impression you need to supply a naming strategy to go with nosetter,
which that method definitely does not do. Try one of the
ReadOnlyPropertyThroughXXX() methods instead. I think this is a badly
implemented method.

Really though, I don't think this property should be mapped at all. It
doesn't seem relevant to NHibernate. I'd use an override or change your
automappingConfiguration to skip this member.

Re: [fluent-nhib] Automapping, change collection type from Bag to Set

2011-03-29 Thread James Gregory
Thanks for that Krzysztof. Our IEnumerable support is a bit lax, and it's
something I've been hoping to sort out; in theory, it shouldn't be too
difficult to do either. NHibernate only supports a limited number of backing
field formats, and it shouldn't take too much to try to guess them with
reflection. I reckon we can get more robust support for IEnumerable in
before 1.2 goes out, and that should hopefully make the need for swapping
collection types in conventions a bit less important.

Re: [fluent-nhib] Re: .HasMany() vs .HasMany()

2011-03-16 Thread James Gregory
It depends what the Claims collection actually is. If it's an IList then
it's definitely a regression. If however, it's a IDictionary, than it's
working as expected. The non-generic call (or rather, the generic arguments
*implied* call) will pick the most appropriate overload, and if it's a
dictionary then that'll produce a map. When you explicitly specify a
single generic argument that implies it's a regular old bag, if you passed
two generic arguments you'd get a dictionary.

Francois, could you show us your entity class?

[fluent-nhib] Re: .HasMany() vs .HasMany()

2011-03-16 Thread James Gregory
Putting one generic argument is saying this is a collection of T, pass it
two generic arguments and you're saying this is a dictionary of TKey,
TValue. You are using the second when you don't pass any generic arguments,
it's just that C# is able to infer those arguments.

The issue to me is that you can call the single generic argument case at all
with a dictionary. A dictionary can be nothing but a map, and having AsMap
is entirely redundant.

Re: [fluent-nhib] Re: Where's the wiki documentation for HasMany collection mapping?

2011-02-07 Thread James Gregory
How about dropping the attitude, and maybe I can help you? If not, you're on
your own. Fluent NHibernate is provided gratis, and support is provided out
of my own free time, if you're not happy with either you know the way out.

If you can't be civil, I'll go spend my time on other things more important.

So, what specific questions would you like answering?

Re: [fluent-nhib] Re: Where's the wiki documentation for HasMany collection mapping?

2011-02-05 Thread James Gregory
I wrote a big reply to this which Google Groups has apparently ate. So
you'll have to bare with me if this comes out a little terse, it wasn't like
that originally.

1) If you've got a foreign key id in your entity *you're doing it wrong*. It
really is as simple as that. Don't put your foreign key ids in your
entities, use your relationships as they should be. What you're trying to do
with Map(x = x.TicketId) is a hack, and will not work.

2) I think you should read up on Cascading in NHibernate, because you don't
seem to be taking advantage of it. I say this because you've said you're
calling InsertNote and InsertTicket separately. I think this has probably
something to do with your RIA infrastructure, and if that's the case then
you shouldn't bother with Cascades at all.

3) Your scenario 2 sets off alarm bells, because again you're using a
foreign key instead of the object relation. NHibernate works with objects,
not foreign key ids, if you're not setting the relation it isn't going to
work property. This is a fundamental issue with using your entities in
remoting, as there's always a mismatch between what the client is able to
send and what your persistence mechanism needs. DTOs are the best way to
handle this stuff, then you could receive an id from the client that you
query on and populate the property appropriately in the entity.

I believe it's your infrastructure that hasn't been designed with NHibernate
in mind. You need to take a step back from this and get your problem working
in an isolated environment away from your existing infrastructure. Creating
relationships in Fluent NHibernate is very simple, and the fact that you
haven't been able to do it indicates you're either not telling us
everything, or more likely your infrastructure is making you do something
that NHibernate doesn't like. Create a new project with just FNH, and a
clean database, and just try create a bi-directional relationship.

[fluent-nhib] Re: inheritance mapping

2011-01-27 Thread James Gregory
You're not doing basic inheritance mapping.

You can't have multiple discriminator columns. If that's what you're trying
to do with your SubTypeType, then it isn't going to work. You have one
discriminator column for the entire table.

To map a table-per-hierarchy with Fluent NHibernate you do this:

public class EntityBaseMap : ClassMapEntityBase
{
  public EntityBaseMap()
  {
Id(x = x.Id);

DiscriminateSubclassesOnColumn(Type);
  }
}

public class EntityChildAMap : SubclassMapEntityChildA
{
}

public class EntityChildBMap : SubclassMapEntityChildB
{
}

That will create a single table for all the subclasses. If you want them to
have their own tables, remove the Discriminate method call.

A subclass doesn't have a unique identifier, hence the lack of the Id method
in SubclassMap, as it inherits that identifier from the class it extends. If
you need to use a different column name for the primary key in the table,
then you should use the KeyColumn method from inside your SubclassMap.

[fluent-nhib] Re: HasOne does not work?

2011-01-22 Thread James Gregory
How would you expect the schema to look?

A one-to-one relationship is an implicit relationship between two tables,
where there's considered to be an association when the two primary key
values match. There's no referential integrity when using this relationship.

Re: [fluent-nhib] suggested modification to the JOIN

2011-01-06 Thread James Gregory
I'm pretty certain this isn't possible. NHibernate doesn't support joining
on arbitrary columns. If your PK was a composite key, then you could use
multiple columns that way, but that's it.
