As it happens, I hit this yesterday, with an EPS of a b&w screenshot with a lot
of white space (actually a shot of FrameMaker's structure view).

Saved from Illustrator CS2 as TIFF with LZW on, 1MB, with LZW off, 19 MB.

RIPs aside, my client's aren't going to thank me for a 19 MB file of a rather
plain and boring screenshot.

(I didn't use PDF because clients specify TIFF for this application.)

Psst. A dirty little not-so-secret.

FrameMaker does NOT support "native .AI files."
What it does support are Adobe Illustrator files
saved with the PDF-compatibility option. When you
import such files, FrameMaker's import filter ignores
the private Illustrator data in such files and treats
them as PDF files and internally converts the PDF to
EPS.

Plugin for enhanced find/change operations?

I had this idea some time ago. Even started to write a script. Never
finished it. As far as I know there is no such plug-in. One day I'll sit
down and finish my script. You will be the first one to receive it. Unless
of course you find something better. Let me know then.

Disk vs memory

2007-01-30 Thread michael.l...@thomson.com
All,

My associate and I have just discovered that all our work in FrameMaker
yesterday is likely lost. The network people were updating servers
yesterday and unknowingly lost our files and probably others. Can anyone
tell if and where I can find those files on our C drives, which I assume
is the "disk" referred to in Frame doc?

I recall and find references in Frame doc to the interaction between
computer memory and disk, which suggests that copies of all saves are
stored on C. But I find no information identifying a location on the
disk that files are saved to. A search of C for the .fm files didn't
turn up the targets.

Tips are welcome--the sooner the better.

Thanks,
Mike

Depends how you have things set up.

If you have been working from the network, and selected for FrameMaker to
create a backup file, I'm afraid the default is to place the backup file in
the working directory (right next to each other, it's daft!).

I don't think FrameMaker keeps a local cache on the client machine I'm
afraid..

Sorry. I hope someone else has a more encouraging answer for you.

I think they're probably lost, but you could try searching for *.fm*
files because some time-saved files have a system-generated suffix.
Assuming Windows, make sure your search includes hidden and system
folders.

You might also tell your network guys that REAL sysadmins work under
cover of night...

Good point Clara. But for the update process they copy all dirs and
files to a replica server, and then back to the production server when
done. They can't find the updated files on the replica. It turns out
that our rework should not take more than a half day, so more the
nuisance than anything.

I like your attitude Art. I've tried that in the past, and also asking
for notification before they begin. I may have to go higher. On the
other hand, they might reply that REAL tech writers work in a secured
source environment, which I will be looking into more aggressively.

You've probably lost your files for good. Unless you specifically set
up an alternate location for backup files, there isn't an automatic
feature to make backups.

This is a good time to point out that there are some great utilities out

Replicator (http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp) It
makes backups from whatever folder structure I want, to whatever folder
structure I want, on the schedule I set. All of my work has three
copies, one on my machine, one on the file server, and one on a backup
server, and all of this happens behind the scenes without any manual
intervention by me. This has really saved my butt a few times!

FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread William Gaffga
Hi all.

Now that it is out, I am looking at moving (at least some of) our Doc
Group to Vista. I don't particularly want to but we always do the
screenshots on the latest OS. So, that will of course require some
software upgrades.

One person on the Adobe Forums has with mostly success ... he had
some OLE issues but that is not surprising. Has anyone here tried FM
7.1 running on Vista? I'd be interested in the results. If I can
avoid an upgrade to 7.2 to save a few bucks that'd be nice.

TIA.

Can't you just do this with a find and replace by pasting? Set up one
instance of the character with the proper character format, select it and
copy, then find the character and replace by pasting, which puts in the
character with the character format.

Upgrade to Framemaker 7.2 issues

2007-01-30 Thread EXI-Bajaj, Gaurav
Hi,

We use Framemaker 7.1 and FDK 7.1 to create an API client (DLL) that
converts the .fm files to .xml. This DLL is built and compiled using
VC++ 6.0 (FM 7.1/FDK 7.1) and is then placed under the
framemaker7.1\fminit\plugins directory.

The system requirements section of FDK 7.2 and 7.1 suggest that they are
targeted for VS.NET 2003 and VC++ 6.0 resp.

Now, we are upgrading to Framemaker 7.2 (patch 7.2p158). During the
testing I have run into some issues when recreating this DLL with FM 7.2
and FDK 7.1/2.

Following is what i have tried so far...

1. FM 7.2/FDK 7.2/.NET 2003 env.
Open the existing workspace (VC++ 6.0) in .NET 2003 and build the DLL
using FDK 7.2 libraries and header files. After placing this DLL under
the plugins directory, when i open a .fm file and try to save it as
.xml... i get a "internal error 7204 . Framemaker has
detected a serious problem and must quit". After clicking on OK, i get
memory cannot be read error and the framemaker closes.

2. FM 7.2/FDK 7.1/.NET 2003 env.
Open the existing workspace (VC++ 6.0) in .NET 2003 and build the DLL
using the FDK 7.1 libraries and header files. The DLL is placed in the
plugins directory. But as soon as I start the framemaker, i get an error
"Cannot initialize API client c:\program
files\adobe\framemaker7.2\plugins\XYZ.DLL"

3. FM 7.2/FDK 7.2/ VC++ 6.0 env
I can compile the .c file but can't build the XYZ.dll. I get the error
"Unresolved external symbol _ftol2" in struct.lib (for different obj
files). I tried fixing this by including the following in my code, but
even then i get the same error:
long _ftol (double)
long _ftol2 (double dblSource) { return _ftol(dblSource); }

4. FM 7.2/FDK 7.1/ VC++ 6.0 env
I can compile and build the DLL. But after placing it in the plugins
directory and starting the framemaker, i get the error "Cannot
initialize API client c:\program
files\adobe\framemaker7.2\plugins\XYZ.DLL"

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gaurav

1) Take a look at Screen Captures 102 here:
http://www.techwr-l.com/techwhirl/magazine/technical/screencapgraphicshomepage.html
.

2) Drawing software tells me you're using vectors and want to use EPS
instead of rasters like PNG, GIF, TIFF, etc.

FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread T.W. Smith
No.

I wouldn't move a production machine to Vista for at least another 9 months.
I'd run SnagIt on the test box and document on XP.

However, FM has always had issues with OLE, I recommend avoiding it on any
and all OSes.

FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread Dov Isaacs
To be fair, I would not say that "FM has always had
issues with OLE" but rather that OLE has always required
"two to tango" and to tango to the same music at that!
Adobe's use of OLE in FrameMaker is actually fairly
stable. On the other hand, some Microsoft applications,
notably Visio as a particular example, have been known
to have somewhat less than robust OLE implementations.
FWIW, I had some "live" FrameMaker documents with OLE
links into Excel spreadsheets that worked like a charm
all the way from FrameMaker 5.5.6 through 7.1. The only
reason I don't use that OLE scenario anymore is that I
don't use that document anymore!

FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread Dov Isaacs
PS: I would strongly concur about any migrations from
Windows 2000 or especially Windows XP to Vista. Unless
you have a brand new system with tons of memory, dual
cores, high speed graphics card, and plenty of extra
disk space, use of Vista to support typical FrameMaker
and associated support programs (including Photoshop,
Illustrator, and Acrobat) buys you precious little other
than a sluggish system. Best idea is to wait until you
need to replace your current computers.

FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread T.W. Smith
Agreed. I did not mean to blame FM. Rather, I meant to recommend against
OLE.

Import graphics by reference. From Visio, this means PDF or EPS created from
PDF. Works for me like a charm. (Actually, I usually go furhter and import
that into illustrator, edit from there, and use the AI--PDF as Dov
rightfully notes--in FM.)

Funny, I began saving all graphics (even bitmaps) as EPS years ago for just
that reason. EPS moves faster because the preview is really bad (or
nonexistent). Of course, ten years ago, it was considerably more than a half
a second to pull up a letter-size 600 ppi scan.

RE: High quality images

2007-01-30 Thread Dov Isaacs
Psst. A dirty little not-so-secret.

FrameMaker does NOT support "native .AI files."
What it does support are Adobe Illustrator files
saved with the PDF-compatibility option. When you
import such files, FrameMaker's import filter ignores
the private Illustrator data in such files and treats
them as PDF files and internally converts the PDF to
EPS.

Does anyone know of a plugin, script or workaround that will allow me to
find/change text & character tags in one operation?

I would like to apply a character tag to a particular character that is
used in paragraphs of several different styles without changing the rest
of the attributes. As far as I can tell, Frame only lets me change
character attributes, not tags.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Disk vs memory

2007-01-30 Thread Michael.Long

This is a good time to point out that there are some great utilities out
there that help in this regard. I use a free one called Karen's

The system requirements section of FDK 7.2 and 7.1 suggest that they are
targeted for VS.NET 2003 and VC++ 6.0 resp.

3. FM 7.2/FDK 7.2/ VC++ 6.0 env
I can compile the .c file but can't build the XYZ.dll. I get the error
"Unresolved external symbol _ftol2" in struct.lib (for different obj
files). I tried fixing this by including the following in my code, but
even then i get the same error:
long _ftol (double)
long _ftol2 (double dblSource) { return _ftol(dblSource); }

4. FM 7.2/FDK 7.1/ VC++ 6.0 env
I can compile and build the DLL. But after placing it in the plugins
directory and starting the framemaker, i get the error "Cannot
initialize API client c:\program
files\adobe\framemaker7.2\plugins\XYZ.DLL"

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gaurav

FWIW,

Yes, in the past I did recommend the EPS route with the image
interpolation flag from Photoshop.

In the meantime, Acrobat and Reader, beginning with versions 6
or 7, do a much better job of displaying and enhancing low
resolution images (such as those from screen shots) on screen,
making that "interpolation flag" (available in the workflow
available now only when saving EPS from Photoshop) somewhat
unnecessary. I do not use this anymore. For printing, virtually
every PostScript or PDF RIP / printer that I know of will
adequately handle the images without the interpolation bit on.

As such, my current recommendation for screen shots in FrameMaker
or for that matter, almost any other page layout program, is to
capture the image and save without any resampling as a TIFF file
using the LZW compression option.

FrameMaker 5.5.6 > Word > InDesign help needed

All:

A former client of mine has a thesis with many graphics imported by
reference into FrameMaker 5.5.6 running in Classic Mac 9.1 on
PowerMacintosh. She wants to convert them to InDesign v. 2.0. I
suggested that she save to Mac Word 4, 5, or 6, or to RTF using the
Japanese converter, in the Save As dialogue. I can't do this myself as I
don't have FrameMaker installed on my home Windows computer.

So, will this process work: FrameMaker 5.5.6 > Word/RTF > InDesign? (I
don't have InDesign or any InDesign experience.)

If this does work, can an Australian FrameMaker user who can assist in
this conversion please contact Mary Ann directly at

You don't need OLE. Import graphics by reference. If you double-click on

RE: FM 7.1 Compatibility

RE: FM 7.1 Compatibility

PS: I would strongly concur about any migrations from
Windows 2000 or especially Windows XP to Vista. Unless
you have a brand new system with tons of memory, dual
cores, high speed graphics card, and plenty of extra
disk space, use of Vista to support typical FrameMaker
and associated support programs (including Photoshop,
Illustrator, and Acrobat) buys you precious little other
than a sluggish system. Best idea is to wait until you
need to replace your current computers.

Re: FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread T.W. Smith

Agreed. I did not mean to blame FM. Rather, I meant to recommend against
OLE.

Import graphics by reference. From Visio, this means PDF or EPS created from
PDF. Works for me like a charm. (Actually, I usually go furhter and import
that into illustrator, edit from there, and use the AI--PDF as Dov
rightfully notes--in FM.)

Best idea is to wait until you
need to replace your current computers.

character tags in cross reference text

2007-01-30 Thread rebecca officer
Hi everyone

I just wondered if anyone has a trick that lets you make a
cross-reference to something that includes character-tagged text, and
preserve the character tag in the cross-reference?

We document commands, and some of them have italics in part of the
command syntax. In the associated step-by-step instructions, the most
reliable way to include the command syntax is to use cross-references.
But the italics get lost. :-(

Thanks!
Rebecca

RE: Disk vs memory

2007-01-30 Thread Paul Grigg
Shot in the dark, but if that FrameMaker file or a previous version of it
was ever run through Webworks to create some form of online help, then under
the \temp folder you'll find a mif version of it.

Subject: Disk vs memory

All,

My associate and I have just discovered that all our work in FrameMaker
yesterday is likely lost. The network people were updating servers yesterday
and unknowingly lost our files and probably others. Can anyone tell if and
where I can find those files on our C drives, which I assume is the "disk"
referred to in Frame doc?

I recall and find references in Frame doc to the interaction between
computer memory and disk, which suggests that copies of all saves are stored
on C. But I find no information identifying a location on the disk that
files are saved to. A search of C for the .fm files didn't turn up the
targets.

Tips are welcome--the sooner the better.

Thanks,
Mike
