FM9 does not support helvetica font (any workaround)

2012-06-19 Thread Amita Goyal
Hello Framers,

I have a specifc query on FM9. It does not support helvetica font (not
included in the licensed version of this s/w package).

Can someone install the Helvetica Font for his specific use in FM9, by
copying required fonts in the fminit (or fonts/ or any other) directory or
by any other method.

I would have liked to test this myselves, but time is short, and hence
putting this question on the list.

Thanks for any help on this topic,

Disappearing text in PDF: a weird issue

2012-06-19 Thread Steve Rickaby
A [remote] colleague has a problem in FrameMaker 10 that I cannot replicate
when she saves the file to MIF and I try it in FrameMaker 7 (and without her
fonts). (I am still stuck in FrameMaker 7 on Mac, but not for much longer.)

In brief, she has a series of three-cell tables that have tinted backgrounds.
Each table sits under a level 1, 2, 3 or 4 heading with its anchor at the start
of the heading para and contains a warning graphic, warning/caution text
created using an autonumber field, and a free-text warning message. The warning
message uses the CellBody para tag whose color is set to black. The para tag
definition for CellBody looks as it should, as does the table definition.

When I create a PDF from a MIF test file using TimesNewRoman, everything works
ok. When she creates a PDF from FrameMaker 10, using some corporate font for
CellBody (GE Inspira), the text of CellBody takes on the shading color of the
table cell and disappears, but only (and this is where is gets really weird) in
the case of the table anchored under the level 2 heading.

As I cannot replicate the problem, there's not a lot I can do to diagnose it.
If anyone can think of a possible reason for this happening, I'd/she'd
appreciate some leads as she's stuck. Thoughts that occur to me are:

. Something about her font is weird

. It's actually a Distiller problem of some sort.

...but if it could be anything to do with FrameMaker, I'd really like to fox it
out.

Thanks for reading this.

To clarify, colleague's CellBody in the level 2 table only takes on the color
of the table cell background in the PDF: in FrameMaker all looks normal.

Are they running Windows XP? There was a Microsoft bug that caused

2012-06-19 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Steve

I have (or had) exactly the same problem with a table on a master page
which had the page number in a shaded cell. The PDF which I generate from
FrameMaker 8 is perfectly OK, but the page number is done when I generate
the PDF from FrameMaker 10. The problem is not related to the Windows XP
hotfix (Mike), but it is caused by FrameMaker 10.

Just select the option Convert CMYK Colors to RGB and try again. This
worked for me, although I really don't want to convert my CMYK colors to
RGB.

Cheers

Try File Preferences General Auto Spell Check.

Glad that solved it. As I suspected, the setting is stored in the
maker.ini file in the program files folder (not the maker.ini files
created elsewhere for individual users). It would appear that FM is not
reliably writing changes to that file. These three lines appear in it:

;Auto Spell Check
EnableAutoSpellCheck=On
AutoSpellCheckCorrectionListSize=5

If the problem recurs, you might save some time by editing that file
directly before relaunching FM.

It would probably be a good idea for you to report the bug:

After purchasing Helvetica, you install it in the same way that you install any

Alternatively, if you don't mind slight differences in appearance and metrics,
you can replace Helvetica with Arial. IIRC, default maker.ini file maps

The appearance difference between Helvetica and Arial is not always so slight.
If you are talking about all caps, the differences in most letterforms are
pretty subtle (altough a few, like the capital R, are markedly different). But
there are a few differences in lower-case letters that are dead giveaways and
that significantly change the feel of the typeface.

Real Helvetica can look a little over-formal, but at least it nearly always
looks harmonious. There are a lot of cases where Arial looks graceless and even
ill-proportioned. It's not that Microsoft is incapable of good typeface
design--Verdana happens to be a really good face. It' sjust a shame that the
one Microsoft font that has become the most widely used is not among their
better efforts.

FWIW, simply specifying Helvetica is almost meaningless. There is absolutely
not one standard Helvetica family. Apple's TrueType Helvetica is different than
Adobe's Type 1 Helvetica, although the character widths are comparable. There
are updated versions of Helvetica from various other sources. There are
numerous versions of Helvetica Neue. You cannot assume that these designs are
all the same. It is amazing what trouble you can get into with this. The same
problems occur with the various flavours of Times ...

Well, yes. But considering that the OP thinks FM doesn't _support_ Helvetica

RE: Adobe Community Forums and Obtuse website

2012-06-19 Thread Dov Isaacs
Scott,

Sorry, but I am not the one to vent at with regards to Adobe's website. I'm
just a dumb engineer in the print group. I have no control or even any
influence over the Adobe website.

In terms of reaching the community forums (a.k.a. the User to User Forums),
I got there with two clicks. From the Adobe home page, I clicked on the Help
button on the top line of the screen. Alternatively, in the middle of that home
page, there is a section labeled Help in which if you click either Find answers
fast, More, or Product help and support centers, you get directly to Adobe's
main support web page. From there, you can get directly to the Adobe User to
User Forums by clicking on the Join in button in the center of the page in the
Meet+Ask+Follow section. To find on-line support for particular products, there
are direct links to some of the major products and the rest of the products may
be accessed by clicking on More Products.

Quite frankly, from what I see, the current support page on the Adobe website
is significantly better than most of what we've had over the last few years.
And FYI, I don't navigate the Adobe website on a regular basis. Since you used
my name in vain in your message, I decided to simply see for myself how bad
it really was. Personally, I don't think that it is quite as bad as you make it
out to be. I had no previous coaching of what to look for to get where you
wanted to go and I got there in two to three mouse clicks. Would this be the
way I would personally design a website. Probably not, but then again, I am not
a website designer - thanks, I'll keep my day job.

Hey, I'm not defending Adobe as having the best of all possible websites, and I
agree that it would be nice to have a link labeled Support, since people have
come to expect that.

But the OP suggested it was unusable, couldn't find the forums, couldn't find
the support pages, and became incensed, frustrated, and extremely angry. I
too hadn't visited Adobe.com or needed support in quite some time, and it took
me just a few seconds to find two ways to get from the home page to the forums
in a couple of clicks. One of them merely requires you to find the word
Forums in what's clearly a set of navigation links.

Here's another way: Type forum in the Search box at the top of the page. A
list of suggested matches appears; the first one is Adobe Online Forums.

And I just spotted a couple more: Below the heading Learning (2/3 down the
page on the left), there's a Check out Adobe Forums link. And below the
heading Help (to the right of that), there's a Product help and support
centers link.

I humbly suggest that if you can't find Adobe's support pages or forums from
its home page, you need to brush up on your Internet browsing skills. :-)

Re: FM9 does not support helvetica font (any workaround)

2012-06-19 Thread Kenneth C. Benson
I think Amita is saying that his Helvetica doesn't work for him.
Unfortunately, as Dov said, there are lots of Helveticas, so no one else
can test this for Amita without knowing exactly which Helvetica Amita is
having problems with.

Amita, it would be helpful to know in what way FM9 appears not to
support your font. Operating system would be useful here too.

It's not unusual to have problems in Frame with soft fonts, fonts that
appear to install along with the installation of a printer, and which
subsequently work (and sometimes don't) only with that printer. Check
first to make sure you really have the font installed. Check by going to
your system fonts folder (probably Control Panel/Fonts). Just because it
shows up in Frame's list of fonts doesn't mean it's installed.

Install the Font using the Fonts Contrl Panel in the OS. It's easier in Win7

Also, make sure you've updated to p255 of FM. That solves some font issues.

Glad that solved it. As I suspected, the setting is stored in the
maker.ini file in the program files folder (not the maker.ini files
created elsewhere for individual users). It would appear that FM is not
reliably writing changes to that file. These three lines appear in it:

;Auto Spell Check
EnableAutoSpellCheck=On
AutoSpellCheckCorrectionListSize=5

If the problem recurs, you might save some time by editing that file
directly before relaunching FM.

It would probably be a good idea for you to report the bug:

The fact that Helvetica is not bundled with FM doesn't mean it doesn't
_support_ Helvetica. AFAIK, FM supports any standard PostScript, TrueType, or
OpenType font properly installed in your Windows OS.

After purchasing Helvetica, you install it in the same way that you install any
font in Windows. Search for "install font" in Windows Help and Support.

Alternatively, if you don't mind slight differences in appearance and metrics,
you can replace Helvetica with Arial. IIRC, default maker.ini file maps
Helvetica to Arial in the Unknown to Known Fonts section, so the replacements
will become permanent if you turn off Remember Missing Font Names (in File >
Preferences > General).

FM9 does not support helvetica font (any workaround)

2012-06-19 Thread Fred Ridder

The appearance difference between Helvetica and Arial is not always so slight.
If you are talking about all caps, the differences in most letterforms are
pretty subtle (altough a few, like the capital R, are markedly different). But
there are a few differences in lower-case letters that are dead giveaways and
that significantly change the feel of the typeface.

See the excellent quiz at http://www.ironicsans.com/helvarialquiz/
And an article that will allow you to ace the quiz at
http://www.ms-studio.com/articlesarialsid.html

Real Helvetica can look a little over-formal, but at least it nearly always
looks harmonious. There are a lot of cases where Arial looks graceless and even
ill-proportioned. It's not that Microsoft is incapable of good typeface
design--Verdana happens to be a really good face. It' sjust a shame that the
one Microsoft font that has become the most widely used is not among their
better efforts.

FM9 does not support helvetica font (any workaround)

2012-06-19 Thread Dov Isaacs
FWIW, simply specifying "Helvetica" is almost meaningless. There is absolutely
not one standard Helvetica family. Apple's TrueType Helvetica is different than
Adobe's Type 1 Helvetica, although the character widths are comparable. There
are updated versions of Helvetica from various other sources. There are
numerous versions of Helvetica Neue. You cannot assume that these designs are
all the same. It is amazing what trouble you can get into with this. The same
problems occur with the various flavours of "Times" ...

Well, yes. But considering that the OP thinks FM doesn't _support_ Helvetica
and doesn't know how to install fonts, I doubt that fine distinctions of
typeface appearance are really an issue. :-) I thought it best to keep it
simple.

After not going to the Adobe website for several years, simply because I didn't

Is it simply me in my old age or has Adobe gone one better than Microsoft in

Go to Adobe.com. In the menu at the top, click Help. On the Adobe Support page,
scan down to Meet + Ask + Follow: "In a community of creative experts, Help is
not a document. It's a conversation. Join in" Click Join in.

Or, at Adobe.com, go to the gray navigation/sitemap table at the bottom of the
page. Under Learning, click Forums.

Now was that so hard? ;-)

Adobe Community Forums and Obtuse website

2012-06-19 Thread Dov Isaacs
Scott,

Sorry, but I am not the one to vent at with regards to Adobe's website. I'm
just a dumb engineer in the print group. I have no control or even any
influence over the Adobe website.

In terms of reaching the "community forums" (a.k.a. the "User to User Forums"),
I got there with two clicks.

Since you used
my name in vain in your message, I decided to simply see for myself how "bad"
it really was.

Maybe not hard, but somewhat obscure. Personally, I think the link label should

One of the teachers of my tech-writing courses used to say, "If the user
can't find it, it's not there." Meaning that it's up to us TW's (and
those darned Web designers) when we design/write/index, etc. to approach
always from the users' perspectives, expectations, and vocabularies.

I'd be looking for Support, too -- Help (to me) implies help with the
Web site, not the products.

Hey, I'm not defending Adobe as having the best of all possible websites, and I
agree that it would be nice to have a link labeled Support, since people have
come to expect that.

But the OP suggested it was unusable, couldn't find the forums, couldn't find
the support pages, and became "incensed, frustrated, and extremely angry." I
too hadn't visited Adobe.com or needed support in quite some time, and it took
me just a few seconds to find two ways to get from the home page to the forums
in a couple of clicks. One of them merely requires you to find the word
"Forums" in what's clearly a set of navigation links.

Here's another way: Type "forum" in the Search box at the top of the page. A
list of suggested matches appears; the first one is "Adobe Online Forums."

And I just spotted a couple more: Below the heading "Learning" (2/3 down the
page on the left), there's a "Check out Adobe Forums" link. And below the
heading "Help" (to the right of that), there's a "Product help and support
centers" link.

I humbly suggest that if you can't find Adobe's support pages or forums from
its home page, you need to brush up on your Internet browsing skills. :-)

FM9 does not support helvetica font (any workaround)

2012-06-19 Thread Kenneth C. Benson
I think Amita is saying that his Helvetica doesn't work for him.
Unfortunately, as Dov said, there are lots of Helveticas, so no one else
can test this for Amita without knowing exactly which Helvetica Amita is
having problems with.

Amita, it would be helpful to know in what way FM9 appears not to
support your font. Operating system would be useful here too.

It's not unusual to have problems in Frame with "soft fonts", fonts that
appear to install along with the installation of a printer, and which
subsequently work (and sometimes don't) only with that printer. Check
first to make sure you really have the font installed. Check by going to
your system fonts folder (probably Control Panel/Fonts). Just because it
shows up in Frame's list of fonts doesn't mean it's installed.

FM9 has never had any font restrictions that I know of. You should be

FM9 does not support helvetica font (any workaround)

2012-06-19 Thread Craig Ede
Install the Font using the Fonts Contrl Panel in the OS. It's easier in Win7
than in WinXP. Do a web query on font install and it'll walk you through it.

Also, make sure you've updated to p255 of FM. That solves some font issues.
(I think the p250 update was the one that solved that stuff.)

Type "Adobe community forums" at the same place.

Subject: Adobe Community Forums and Obtuse website

After not going to the Adobe website for several years, simply because I
didn't need any support, I visited it today.

Is it simply me in my old age or has Adobe gone one better than Microsoft in
making their corporate website TOTALLY unusable? I could not find any sign
of the community forums, nor could I easily find a link to the support area.

Dov, are you reading this?

I'm a long-time customer an Adobe has basically told me today that I am not
important to them. I refuse to buy Microsoft products because of that
attitude. Is Adobe set in making my experience with them the same as with
Microsoft?

Tell your masters that programmers and marketing should NOT be allowed to
design interfaces, nor do they have an clue about how to satisfy customers.

I am incensed, frustrated, and extremely angry that I can't find the
Information that I need through their now non-existent support channel.

Scott

The "last" Opportunity for FM7-10 upgrade

2012-06-19 Thread Jim Duszynski
Hello Framers,

I learned a day too late about the FM7 to FM10 upgrade from this forum and now
with the 6/15 deadline past have a worthless PO in my e-hand. However, I've
been told that if enough of us late-comers step up, Adobe may allow the promo
price to this group. Is anyone interested or maybe willing to make the move
now? Please let Abhishek Agarwal, Abhishek.Agarwal at
adobe.com<mailto:Abhishek.Agarwal at adobe.com> know of your serious interest
and drop my name for association (the only time that will do you any good).

A day late, but still have that dollar,

How to prepare Frame files for English to Korean translation

2012-06-19 Thread Kelly Lawetz
Hello Framers,

How do I prepare my Frame files for translation to Korean? Product names and
Role names will not be translated.
The translator will convert Frame > mif 7.0 > Trados.ttx files and then back
again. What do I need to do on my end before I send the files?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Kelly Lawetz
