Do you mean Secure Password Authentication or SPA? Don't use that, as
it's a Microsoft proprietary authentication method.

How do I use the Cram-MD5 passwords with Outlook? Or do I have to go
plain text?

Rsync w/ Windows

2007-03-16 Thread Chris Maness
I need to sync a directory with my freebsd box. In linux/bsd I use the
command rsync -vaur :/home/chris/beer /home/chris/beer and
this works perfectly for me. However, using the cwrsync package in
windows with this syntax does not work.

Pleas help!

Hello Chris,

May I suggest that you take a peek at
http://www.itefix.no/phpws/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=6&MMN_position=23:23

As example I have the following syntax in my cwrsync.cmd

(In this example I backup documents and settings from pc to FreeBSD by
using the script cwrsync.cmd included in the cwrsync distribution. The
script can be run with the windows scheduler)

rsync --exclude-from=excludefiles.txt -avz --delete -e "ssh -i
bin/.ssh/identify" "/cygdrive/c/documents and settings/username"
:/path/on/freebsd/server

You will need to create a folder named .ssh in the bin folder of
cwrsync and in that folder create the necessary ssh keys.

Good luck!

Thank you. This works awesome.

NFS issues ??

2007-12-31 Thread Chris Maness
I am trying to mount a Linux box with NFS from my FreeBSD box, with the
command:

# mount_nfs4 192.168.1.66:/home/chris/ /mnt/nfs/

where the IP is the Linux box and the share is /home/chris

When I run the command I get:

mount_nfs4: /mnt/nfs: No such file or directory

Now /mnt/nfs exists and is writable.

Running showmount returns:

# showmount -e 192.168.1.66

/home/chrisns1

Very strange, I have done this in the past with no problems. Any
suggestions?

Are you certain you used NFSv4? It's more likely you used NFSv3 or v2.

You were correct, I think the Linux kernel version is not nfs4. When I

pIII coppermine?

I have an ABIT VP6 dual socket that I want to use as my FreeBSD server.
I only have one CPU installed, and I was told that if I were to add

be able to boost the power of this box.

I assume you mean "BP6".

Why? The Abit BP6 and Abit VP6 both exist, and are two different
motherboards, with the VP6 being newer and supporting faster CPUs.

I see no reason to not believe he did mean "VP6".

It's best that they be the same "stepping"
number; this is like an engineering revision level in Intelese. Usually
looks like "SLQ7" or similar. But it wasn't required on those boards. Of
course Intel never sanctioned Dual Celerons, which is what made it so cool
:) I still have one of those with very low hours that I keep thinking I
should dust off and recommission for sumpthin'.

I hope you're not using this machine for any critical applications. All
the ABIT boards of that day (circa 1999) had really low quality
electrolytic capacitors in the voltage regulators that are notorious for
failing. And the BP6 had one cap that got a totally wrong value installed
on the board. Google BP6 capacitors and you'll find lots. Also www.BP6.com
Have fun.

Both the BP6 and VP6 have a reputation for bad capacitors (the VP6 even more
so than the BP6.)

I built the machine in 2000 and used it with no problems all the way up
to 2005. I lucked out. It just so happens they have the same
"stepping" number, so they should work perfect together. I am going to
be using it as a file server/backup server. If it runs stable, I might
make it my main server, because with both processors running it will be
better than the other oldie I have as my main server. I used the VP6
as my main desktop for 5 years before Photoshop got too bloated to run
fast enough for my photography business. If something was going to give
as far as the caps on the board, would they still be a high risk if the
board has been very reliable thus far?

I just use the main server to host a couple of small traffic web sites
from my house. It has been running fine for almost 8 years, and I only
recently added a hard drive as a precaution.

which would explain your situation.

Ruby Taking FOREVER to compile?

2007-07-19 Thread Chris Maness
I am upgrading all of my ports on a slightly slower machine, and
ruby+pthreads packge is taking what seems to be an unreasonably long
time to compile. Is it possible that it is stuck in a loop? It has
been sitting on "Generating RI" for several hours. It doesn't seem to
take that long to build the whole base system.

Thanks,

USB Mouse not Working

2007-07-27 Thread Chris Maness
I am having issues getting my USB mouse running. I don't get any error

I had this. I had to start some daemon before starting X... what was
it now... devd? usbd? psmd? moused? Something like that, anyway. And I
had to specify the "mouse port" IIRC. You know, something like "moused

I tried that, but I get nothing. Should I expect to see garbage from
#cat /dev/sysmouse and then move the mouse around? Can you do that in

moused(1) with usbd(1). Don't forget to compile uhid, ums, and all other
dependent drivers into the kernel, either statically or as modules (man ums,
uhid will get you on your way here).

Try moused with auto detection, using /dev/ums0. If you don't see anything
about a USB mouse being attached in dmesg, you don't have the right drivers
compiled for your kernel. If you do, moused / usbd hasn't been setup yet.

cat /dev/sysmouse will yield you the info you seek in the end, but you
should try /dev/ums0 first, because that will work regardless of whether or
not moused is started.

Good luck :),
-Garrett

The mouse seems to get detected perfectly and this is the GENERIC kernel
build that has the modules. The mouse gets detected and listed at boot
time. However, I don't think I am getting data out of the mouse port.

I beleive in the past I have checked with

#cat /dev/ums0

and if things are working corectly, cat display binary garbage on the
screen when you wiggle the mouse. Try this after killing moused (moused
makes ums0 unavailable).

Perhaps the mouse is dead or dying? Mine keeps its USB cable on a little
spindle, and to unreel the cable you have to tug on the cable. Not the best
design since the cable is very thin and has taken damage over time.

Or just undisplayed codes, some of which might wedge your terminal.

Apart from using xev (in X), try piping cat through hexdump:

paqi# cat /dev/sysmouse | hd

Cheers, Ian

Try doing that with /dev/ums0 after killing moused. I would imagine it
would do the same. I installed PC-BSD on the same box and tried several
USB mice. Still no worky. I think I have some kind of bug either in
the mother board, or in FreeBSD, because I had tried installing WinXP
over it and the USB mouse worked. Really weird. I think I will
probably have to use a PS/2 mouse on this box.

try adding DISABLE_VULNERABILITIES=yes to /etc/make.conf
(do not forget to unset it afterwards though ;)

Why do I get:
pkg_add: can't stat package file 'wordpress'

when I I try to use package add? I guess the packages seem to need to
be listed under /usr/ports/packages/ per an environment variable, but
that directory is empty. pkg_add used to work without the -r flag to
build a port from source. What happened?

gtk20 doesn't depend on gdk-pixbuf according to the port, but the gtk2's

In short: the gnome-hack magic is not working for this as it doesn't add

To make it work for you:
Just do portupgrade -f graphics/gdk-pixbuf, then portupgrade -Rf gtk20 again.

OK, after I was able to get apache to load without crashing, none of my
php aps worked correctly. I suppose this had to do with me deleting

extensions.ini and only rebuilding php5 and not its dependencies. Well, after
rebuilding all of the deps, I now have a extensions.ini file again. I tried
re-arranging as suggested in the archive, but this did not solve the problem.
I am only having this issue on my 7.0-R box. 6.3-R seems to be working ok, but
I haven't been fooling with it. I am having the issue on my test box.

OK, after I was able to get apache to load without crashing, none of my

after rebuilding all of the deps, I now have a extensions.ini file again.
I tried re-arranging as suggested in the archive, but this did not solve
the problem. I am only having this issue on my 7.0-R box. 6.3-R seems to
be working ok, but I haven't been fooling with it. I am having the issue
on my test box.

Hmm, "worked correctly" is about as broad as "slow internet". Can you be sure
the errors are related?
First try to make sure, the core dump is gone (php -v shouldn't coredump),
then resolve the errors in your apps. They might be caused by different
issues, like you're missing a module, paths changed, dunno. Will have to see
the errors :)

Mel

Problem with today's modular software: they start with the modules
and never get to the software part.

The pages were not displaying correctly. The squirrelmail page came up
blank. My joomla page complained of an internal error. I imagine this
was do to the fact that I removed the extension.ini file completely, but
when I rebuilt all of the modules for php, there was a new extension.ini
file. It seems like the issue is related to the extension.ini file
somehow, but rearranging the arguments haven no effect. Also, there are no
log entries for apache when it dumps. It dies without any errors in the
log. It is almost like it needs to be debugged with a non-stripped
binary. However, I am not an apache developer, and would have no idea how
to do this.

Also, my configuration file and installation is default, so this should
just work out of the box. Very frustrating.

Apache -- Analyzing core dump?

2008-03-11 Thread Chris Maness
I used to analyze core dumps with tnos to debug. It has been a coon's
age since I've done such. I am having apache crash and core dump.
There isn't any error info in the log files.

Where is the core dumped to (the main log tells me the core has been
dumped)?

How do I analyze this dump file to find out what went wrong?

Do I have to compile apache with debug features turned on to do this?

I am referring to my previous thread:

apache+mod_ssl-1.3.41+2.8.31 crashing with mod_php5

libm.so.4 not found

How do I build 7.0 with libm.so.4 compatibility built in? I find it on my
6.3 system. But not on my upgraded 7.0 system.

in reference to:

http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2006-May/122264.html

I see that I should be able to add the variable:

COMPAT4X=yes

to /etc/make.conf but this flag is not recognized by the Makefile in
/usr/src/. Has this been obsoleted? What is the correct way to add this
compatibility if possible?

What is the function of ld-elf.so.1?

Mail Spool Problems / IMAP

2008-04-07 Thread Chris Maness
I am having trouble with my imap account on my FreeBSD box. I am using
WU-IMAP, and thuderbird. I have been using this combo for years, and not
had any issues. Now, my thuderbird is not displaying messages in the
inbox. I can see them with pine, but not with IMAP clients.
(squirrelmail, thunderbird). Pine complains about sequence error when I
send a message. I was able to get it to work for a bit by deleteing the
mbox file in my home directory, but now it is not working again. IS there
a database or something somewhere that needs to be rebult?

Can you double-check your mbox file?

With the most recent 2007 version of UW-IMAP, I've seen intermittent
corruption of the first line of a mbox file (ie, the "From foo" header) which
causes the mbox to be unreadable by most clients until it is fixed by hand.
It seems to be correlated with simultaneous write access by people who have a
normal MUA and a second device like a smartphone (iPhone/Treo/BB).

I've seen just over a half-dozen of these since Jan...

Look at the first few lines; you should see either a placeholder message
like:

This text is part of the internal format of your mail folder, and is not
a real message. It is created automatically by the mail system software.
If deleted, important folder data will be lost, and it will be re-created
with the data reset to initial values.

This is the header that I have.

...or a normal message with an X-IMAPbase: header, depending on which version
of UW IMAP you created the mailbox under. If you see binary gunk (see
forwarded message below), you're running into the same issue I've seen.

Try to delete the account in T'bird, quit, and then re-add the account. Also
check /var/log/maillog...imapd should be reporting errors if it sees anything

Very often it is only one character out of place. Each header should
start with 'From' in the beginning of a line

Since you mention one character, it should actually be starting with 'From '
and any line that starts with 'From ' that is not the start of a mail should
be changed to '>From ' before ending up in the mbox file.

This test weeds it out, allthough there's still room for false positives,
easily resolved by the human brain:
grep '^From ' /var/mail/myloginname |grep -v '200[78]$'
--
Mel

Problem with today's modular software: they start with the modules
and never get to the software part.

Actually, the mail that is in /var/mail/chris gets moved to
/home/chris/mbox

Before it gets moved, it does not have this placeholder header. It only
has the headers of e-mail sent since the last time mail was checked and
moved to the mbox file.

Also, none of headers in the mbox have the chicken lips ">" not even the
first one that I posted.

Wouldn't these issues be rectified if I deleted the mbox file and started
from scratch?

something changed so that I cannot use pine as a local client? It looks
like I might be able to use pine through IMAP ok, but not like I used to.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this problem?

Re: Pine and IMAP

2008-04-10 Thread Chris Maness

I have been using a local pine client in conjunction with IMAP for

years without issues. However, recently, it looks like when pine
moves mail to the mbox file, it hoses up my ability to use my imap
clients. Has something changed so that I cannot use pine as a local
client? It looks like I might be able to use pine through IMAP ok,
but not like I used to.

If you have a file called mbox in your home directory, pine will move
the contents of your inbox there and treat the file as your inbox -
the point is to avoid having large amounts of mail in a local spool
directory. I presume that by "hoses up my ability to use my imap
clients" you are just referring to the fact that pine has moved the mail
offline.

If you move the mail out of your pine inbox, you can then remove the
empty file. Pine doesn't create this file by default, it was probably
put there by another client - I have seen mutt do this.

Yep, the old UNIX mail client generated the box years ago. The IMAP daemon
also recognizes this file as the inbox once it is created. However, now it
serves the index, but when I try to open one of the e-mail with an IMAP client
it chokes out.

I have stopped using pine as a "movemail" type of client and set it up to do
IMAP too.

However, as you mention, it leaves the inbox on the spool (I don't like this
for obvious reasons). I am just wondering what changed to cause me to not be
able to use pine in this manor any longer.

Thanks,
Chris Maness

Pine Corupting Inbox

2008-04-21 Thread Chris Maness
I think that pine is corrupting my inbox, so that it is unreadable by
UW-IMAPD. When using squirrelmail after using pine I see the headers, but
squirrelmail is unable to open the e-mails. I switched over to alpine
since I do understand that pine is no longer supported. If other people
have experienced this it would be nice to have at least a notice when it
is installed. I have used pine for almost 10 years without this problem,
but maybe this is an incompatability with a newer version of UW-IMAPD.

Anyone else having these issues?

dosbox and com ports

2008-04-21 Thread Chris Maness
Has anyone had experience using dosbox's com port access under FreeBSD?
Would it be equivalent tot the direct access that DOS and real UART
provides? I want to use good old dos app for radio teletype (running

if anyone has played with com ports.

When you read your mail with (al)pine with it picking up mail directly from
/var/spool/mail, (al)pine will move the mail from /var/spool/mail into
mailbox folders in your home directory.

Now normally, this puts the mail in a place where it can still be picked up
by uw-imap server. Indeed, under default configurations the uw-imap server
will perform pretty much the same action when it gets new mail out of
/var/spool/mail. So when everything is working right, even reading the mail
locally with pine shouldn't mess things up as they have for you.

years without this problem, but maybe this is an incompatability with a
newer version of UW-IMAPD.

Here is what I would do to start diagnosing my first guess at the problem:

(1) Set up (or use) a clean vanilla user account, say fred.
(2) Send fred mail.
(3) log in as fred and have fred read mail with pine, with as close to a
default configuration as possible.

(4) See if fred can see his mail via squirrelmail. If so
(5) Look around ~/fred to find where pine put the mail.
(6) Compare the mail file locations for ~/fred and for you.
(7) If there are difference (which is what I'm expecting), then look through
your .pinerc

Post back a report about how those steps go. If things break at step 4, then
still do step (5) and report that back here.

Good luck.

Cheers,

-j

I'll check it out. Alpine is doing the same thing. It worlks fine for a
bit, an then no imap clients can access the mail. Only alpine can read
the spool. I am not having any problems whith other users, I will have to
try to test the spool with a fresh user like you suggested. I might
use aliases to send mail to this account as well.

Then my suspicion grows stronger that something in your own particular pine
configuration is putting your mail in a place where imapd can't see it. So
in addition to what I've suggested, have you looked for any errors logged by
imapd in your system logs?

No, it is leaving it on the spool. Squirrel mail can read the headers,
but it cannot open the mail.

Syncing Mail After Cut Over

Whould it be acceptable to use rsync to sync the mail spool after using
dump/restore onto new hardware? I plan on doing some testing first and
leave the original server up while testing, so the servers mail spool will

I was having this issue too a while back. I replaced the CD-ROM with a new
CD-ROM/DVD drive and now it works ok.

Compiling in Debugging Flags

2008-05-02 Thread Chris Maness
How do I compile in debugging into apache using ports? There is no
configmenu when one begins to install/compile the port. I'm still having
trouble with apache crashing on a recently upgraded server. (after I have
rebuilt all of the ports). I was having the same problem with apache on a
sandbox server after upgrade to 7.0-RELEASE. I wasn't ever able to figure
it out. I have just upgraded apache on a production server, and I am not
able to cut over until apache working. I get no errors in log files no
errors on std out, and no core dump either. If I attache to GDB, I get no
messages either. Wierd.

Sorry, guys. I spoke too soon. It is crashing on the fresh install as
well. I just rebooted, and the same situation occurs, httpd core dumps
instantly. (with php5 module installed) The only other thing I did
begin installing squirrel mail. I have a virtual installation that I
will try it on too. This is the third instance of apache13 port
crashing with the php5 built with the module. I did nothing to
httpd.conf except add a virtual host. I checked this with apachectl
checkconfig and it was fine. After it started crashing, I removed the
vhost and it was still crashing.

dmesg outputs stuff from the current system message buffer, which contains
your boot messages right after booting but those can get flushed over time.
Boot messages are saved to a file though, for reference.

Not new behavior. A dmesg on any of my running systems (4.x, 5.x)
returns nothing after a time. You were just catching it before the
buffer was flushed. I don't know what triggers that, and it is
possible that the trigger/timing of it may have changed in 6.x (and as
always, YMMV).

Interesting. Does "dmesg -a" show anything different?

Yes, it does, but why would it not show anything without the flag right
after a reboot? Wierd. I almost suspect hard drive issues.

Is /var/run/dmesg.boot populated correctly?

Yes
What kinds of things are in the -a output?

named error messages mostly (this is a name server)
Same results booting with or without network attached?
Haven't tried, but there are no messages displayed by dmesg (without a
flag) at the time
(asking because busy network w/ lots of system messages seems to be
what's flushing the buffer for me).

I got the exactly same happen to me with 6.1-RELEASE updated just
after 6.1 was released. Didn't think about the weirdness really until
now seeing your messages. The symptoms were exactly the same,
/var/dmesg file was empty right after the boot and of course dmesg

Things seems to be normalized for me with 6.1-STABLE from yesterday,

good luck,
Beto
I have followed all of the instructions for patching the src (from
above), and firefox still crashes with the error: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1:
/usr/local/lib/pluginwrapper/flash7.so: Undefined symbol "_dlsym" when
a flash page is loaded. What have I missed?

Hi,

I'm using flash on 6-STABLE so I don't know if it works on 6.1R or not.

Make sure you linux_base ports and linuxpluginwrapper are up-to-date.
I'll assume your linux-flashplugin-7 is up-to-date. My version is
linux-flashplugin-7.0r63.

A directory listing of /usr/X11R6/lib/firefox/plugins might also help.
Here is what my listing looks like:

dwpc@ /etc# ll /usr/X11R6/lib/firefox/plugins
total 32
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 49 Jun 26 23:39 flashplayer.xpt ->
/usr/X11R6/lib/linux-flashplugin7/flashplayer.xpt
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 51 Jun 26 23:40 libflashplayer.so ->
/usr/X11R6/lib/linux-flashplugin7/libflashplayer.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 19216 Jun 19 17:45 libnullplugin.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 11632 Jun 19 17:45 libunixprintplugin.so

Also here is what my /etc/libmap.conf looks like:

# [ALPHA SUPPORT] Flash7 with Mozilla
[/usr/X11R6/lib/linux-flashplugin7/libflashplayer.so]
libpthread.so.0 libpthread.so.2
libdl.so.2 pluginwrapper/flash7.so
libz.so.1 libz.so.3
libm.so.6 libm.so.4
libc.so.6 pluginwrapper/flash7.so

BTW, there is a discussion concerning this on current@
which is very interesting and I recommend as good reading.
As that discussion implies and as the linuxpluginwrapper
states explicitly, this is unsupported.

Hope this helps. YMMV

I was able to get it to work by following different instructions on
patching the /usr/src tree.

# cd /usr/src
# fetch http://people.FreeBSD.org/~nork/rtld_dlsym_hack.diff
<http://people.FreeBSD.org/%7Enork/rtld_dlsym_hack.diff>

# patch < rtld_dlsym_hack.diff
# cd libexec/rtld-elf/
# make clean
# make obj
# make depend
# make
# make install

worked like a charm ;o)

fwiw, I've followed these instructions on a few boxes, all 6.1-RELEASE, and
have had no problems:

hth,
Bob

I wonder if the patch for the source tree will actually be included in
the source for the next stable release?

ATAPICAM

2006-07-11 Thread Chris Maness
How do I load atapicam at boot time. I tried to have it load the same
way I have the sound modules load, and it doesn't work. After the
system is up and running I can load just fine.

Thanks,

DNS Blacklist Script?

2006-08-04 Thread Chris Maness
Does anyone know of a script (or application) to automagically add a
host to a dns blacklist? It would be very convenient to blacklist all
the e-mails sent from a spammer to a honeypot address, or to blacklist
all senders that thunderbird moves into the spam sub-folder.

Thanks,

You need to be very careful implementing something like this. Most
Spam nowadays is bot-generated and uses forged 'From' addresses culled
from the address books on infected machines. Unless you're careful,
you're going to end up blocking a lot of completely innocent people,
or worse, blocking your own legitimate e-mail users.

DNS based blacklists are based on the senders IP address, not the forged
from address.
