Re: [Freedos-user] editors.

2013-02-04 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi all,

in the past I have used mainly these 3 advance editors:

1) Aurora http://www-personal.umich.edu/~knassen/aurora.html
2) http://setedit.sourceforge.net/
3) Necromancer's DOS Navigator http://ndn.muxe.com/

Editor 1) has almost all features and if it lacks one, then it is easy
to add it due to the support of scripts.
Editor 2) uses Turbo Vision as TUI and supports Linux
Editor 3) is part of my favorite file manager.

Cheers

I wouldn't contribute to this GUI. The framework has no modern features, were
very nice years back. But now…

I would only contribute to GUIs, which are ports from Linux or at least are
using libraries for the GNU C/C++ compiler.

You are wrong. There weren't many useful programs, BUT it provides most widgets

would have been the first choice. But I think, this GUI were 5 years too late…

Now there seems to be problems compiling the whole framework.

I think learning from those makefiles is the easiest way. One problem is

[Freedos-user] Bootable USB stick

2008-12-20 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

I fought some hours with a new USB stick to make it bootable in DOS. I
decided to share my experience and wrote following article:

http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Blog.2007-12-20-ArticleBootableUSBsticks
(you can edit it - just click EDIT and use "gast" as name and "gast"
as password).

BTW: "Installation using Windows or Linux" may be better, since I
couldn't only use a computer with Windows.

BTW2: The article uses SYSLINUX since other known possibilities didn't
work with my USB stick, the BIOS or HP's program "USB disk storage
format tool".

Comments are wellcome!

[Freedos-user] Octave (Matlab "clone")

2008-12-20 Thread Florian Xaver
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I created a new page
http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Main.Octave

about using Octave in DOS. It collects some info which I have found out
by now.

This site is given for discussing about how to bring Octave to DOS.
Using HX-Extender or a native DJGPP port. I will make further tests next
time I have some hours available. :-) :-(

I also tried to compile it and it seems that it shouldn't be too
difficult to make a port in DJGPP. But this would result in less
features so using HX extender would be easier (in the first).

Another interesting project (-maybe for 2010 :-) would be porting LaTeX
to DOS...

If DOSLFN is loaded without error, any program that supports LFN will
support it.

With 4DOS use
Win95LFN=Yes
in the config file.

If you are using FreeDOS's Freecom then you can use
dir /LFN
But I think that it doesn't support more LFN features...

Hi all! :-)What is APEG?APEG is an audio/video add-on for the Allegro game programming library. It provides functions for playing MPEG-1 and Ogg streams identically to the way it handles FLIC files. Beyond that it includes a bunch of extra extensions, including but not limited to opening multiple streams. A tool is also included for creating Ogg media from various sources.Bye  Flo

2008-07-21 Thread Florian Xaver

We have discussed this frequently :-)

100% compatiblity with MS-DOS is the goal of FreeDOS 1.x. But later,
with 2.x+, there can be other goals.
Many tools of FreeDOS's distro are better than MS-DOS's and even
better than the tools of Dr-DOS.
I don't think that it could be an alternative to windows/linux in all
parts, but in some (I am using): yes. Mpxplay and QV are examples.

I don't think, that FreeDOS needs a big goal, but my opinion is, that
the focus of versions of FreeDOS > 1.x should be to add as many
featues, with may be exists even now, as possible.

I am afraid that the goal will be "an OS for emulators/virtualizers".
But it should be more :-)

Use the command CALL. f.e.

call test.bat

if you want to call

test.bat param1 param2

which executes a program, use %1, %2, %3... for first, second...
parameter. In test.bat for example:

test.exe %1 %2

Maybe you should use 4DOS...it supports many many command (has a good
script/batch language) and has a very good help.

Re: [Freedos-user] Good soundcard?

2008-05-17 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

Yes, I think it is a good idea to ask here and then to buy an old card
(via ebay or others...).

I am using SBLive here, if you only want to use Mpxplay or QV it works
very good. If you want to use the driver for emulating SB16, I think
that I heard, that an old mainboard has to be used.

I think it would be _also_ interesting which _new_ hardware would be
usefull for DOS these days - which soundcard (which can be used by
Mpxplay/QV), which network-cards, which mainboards etc.

But who will require FreeDOS then? All things would be made better

be bad... but haven't tried it, I don't have a pc with EFI.

Even if you would download the wrong BIOS update, the update-program

Good old Dr-DOS 8.03 had a taskmanager, which supports some Win9x (or
Win3.11...I don't know now) drivers for network cards. With JEMM I
think it would be possible to port drivers of Linux...(Mpxplay has

I am booting in DOS because it is fast. F.e. I can use MPXPLAY which
shut down the pc easily after playing. I am also using it in DOSEMU,
which is great (but no bugless). Yes, the biggest problem is support
of sound. And in the near future the "Extensible Firmware Interface".

Maybe you should make an update of the BIOS?

Maybe DOSBOX is good, if you want to run an old game, but it is only
an emulation of old pcs to play old games which would be to fast. If
you like to use modern programs like me DOSEMU is much much better.

Thank you. I haven't known the link!

One problem is, that such drivers are big projects and not many people
have the knowledge or time to think about it and develope it. But... I
haven't also thought that there would exist XDMA or HX Extender. So
all is possible.
And I recognize that now are many new users/developers here ... this
is very good :-)

Por favor... don't write such words here - because the chief should
not make it "official", that there "should" be used another operating
system for FreeDOS ;-P Better: Booting FreeDOS shows how fast and
powerfull it is, but for beginners it could be easier to test it first
under Linux... ;-P

[Freedos-user] [OT?] Connect file manager

2008-04-25 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

just played around with this file manager. Beside Necromancer DOS
Navigator this is also a feature-rich program. It has a very good
editor and a html-viewer (with support of hyperlinks). So also
interesting for the FreeDOS projekt - I think :-)

I have been using NDN everytime for developing programs (if I have
time... :-), but Connect is even better (open source, but not under
developement like NDN). If you also want to test it - use the right
mouse button everywhere!!! :-)

Si, claro. La licencia es GPL. Puedes ir a
http://sf.net/projects/ozonegui y usar SVN para obtener el código. Por
favor sube despues tambien tus cambios. Si quieres subir una
distribución binaria podrás hacerlo con un otro nombre.

If anyone want to update Ozone (under GPL), also under another name,
download the source code using SVN and please upload your changes too.
You can upload the binary under another name tambien at your site...

[Freedos-user] DUGL released

2008-02-24 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

the graphical library DUGL has been updated: http://dugl.50webs.com/

Changes:
global
- Cleaned include files
- Better License.txt
- The GUI, and Sound moved to a new open Source addon library DUGL-PLUS.
This will keep DUGL a small and fast C/Asm library :)

graphics:
- InitVesaMode Init now any available 16bpp graphic mode.
- SetSurf accepts now a 16bpp Surf as a target drawing Surf.
- Added 16bpp graphic functions :
  * Poly16 : supporting POLY16_SOLID, POLY16_TEXT, POLY16_MASK_TEXT
and the new POLY16_RGB
  * PutPixel16, GetPixel16, Clear16, Line16, LineMap16
  * ClearSurf16, line16, linemap16, putpixel16, cputpixel16, getpixel16,
cgetpixel16, Bar16, bar16, rect16, rectmap16
  * PutSurf16, PutMaskSurf16
  * OutText16, OutText16XY, OutText16Mode, OutText16YMode, RViewOutText16Mode
RViewOutText16YMode, RViewOutText16XY
- Added RViewOutTextXY for 8bpp text outputting
- Romoved the asm instruction EMMS from all the graphic functions.
This will increase the rendering speed specially on slow computers.
Instead the user should call the macro FREE_MMX() when going to use
floating math.
- Added ScanLine and Mask to the Surf structure.
- Fixed a bug on CreateSurf, and CreateSurfBuff computing errnously
the SizeSurf.
- Added the function SetSrcSurf(Surf *S) to set the current source
Surf for all the
drawing function using a surf, like Poly, PutSurf, PutMaskSurf.
Giving the possiblity
then to pass a NULL pointer as source Surf.

No - there are two ways - one for linux (Eric wrote a script) and one
program for Windows from HP: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

I used this program for writing the bootsector and formating of the
usb-stick (FAT32).
It works like a big floppy (I have 256MB-USB-Stick) now. After that I

[Freedos-user] usb stick

2008-01-17 Thread Florian Xaver
hola,

yesterday I made a USB pendrive bootable and installed FreeDOS with
latest drivers...
Access of the USB-Stick is very slow - porque of 2 reasons: I have
DOSLFN loaded and 4DOS reads the descript.ion files. Any idea how to
make it faster?
XDMA(32) and lbacache+tickle do not help... I am thinking of using a ram-disk.

I think the ifsdrv of Paragon is very interesting... (supports NTFS
and EXT3)... very bad that it isn´t free available. In which product
of Paragon is it? Partition Manager?

[Freedos-user] freedos update and 4dos

2008-01-15 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

I have some questions:

1) 4DOS in FreeDOS 1.1: Will it - the package - have the structure of
directory as the other programs? Or not? (freecom is in the
root-directory...)

*) In both cases it should be available via freedos's new update. It
has so _many_ features that it is important for FreeDOS 1.1.

*) And - maybe the configuration should change. F.E. Win97LFN=yes if
for using with DOSLFN

4) Will it be possible, that FreeDOS's update can start a specific
file (+parameters) after unzipping a package? I ask, porque that would
make it possible to start installation-files. (f.e. a
installation-file which configure 4DOS after unzipping).

5) And...as always: I vote for using 4DOS as main command-interpreter
and freecom as optional. ;-)

*) Btw: I would find it usefull to install DOSLFN as default. DOSLFN +
4DOS are working smoothly for me...

If all questions will be answerd, maybe I will find time to make a
4DOS package for FreeDOS.

Hasta luego

Webcam no! :-(

USB-support is possible for USB-sticks and USB-HD with driver or updated
BIOS. Keyboard and mouse for USB only with newer BIOS.

SEAL??? I had developed for SEAL in the past and am very interested. (It

Where can I download it? The link haven't worked for me.

There exists no single library, so it isn't possible to link your
ozoneprogram to a library to get one exe-file with your program.

It is easily possible to make a new distribution for your own program,
without additional programs, without some libraries, without desktop,
without additional skins/themes etc. It would be much smaller. As oZone
is under GPL, this special distribution must be under GPL too.

There exist one bug - which I haven't found with Drag&Drop/Dynamic
modules ("DLLs"). (Maybe a problem with my DJGPP installation...(?))
Nobody has told me another...

It is like SEAL 2 or BadSEAL, but written in C and includes a cleaner
kernel and support for Skins/Themes. (I haven't be able compile latest
SEAL 2 with latest GCC compiler - many many errors.) It also can handle

The kernel is cleaner than SEAL because SEAL had been ported to ALLEGRO

[Freedos-user] new version of mpxplay with Intel HDA support

2007-11-08 Thread Florian Xaver

I've implemented Intel HDA compatible audiocards (onboard chips/codecs)
handling,
but I could test it on Realtek ALC888 only. Something feedback would be
great
about the other codecs. Use the -sct option to test your hardware...

I think I can now play mp3s/oggs on my laptop using DOS. Muy bien! :-)

How many RAM do you have? I have 512MB and my config.sys loads JEMMEX
without such an option. Then you have some EMS for old programs.

Another way: Have you thought about installing an UDMA driver? There
exists UDMA since one week ago which also includes a cache. And there is
also a new driver UDVD which uses UDMA now. I haven'T tested, if you get
more conventional memory, but this configuration works for me very good.

What is 4DOS

In my option it is the best command line, not even for DOS. It has much
more features than BASH, support a very good script language, has
auto-completion of file names, support long file names (LFN), has a good
text fewer, uses extended memory, supports colored directory lists (dir

I have an idea. You could have a "compatible" configuration and a
"full feature" configuration. Second one should load latest JEMMEX and
maybe one of the protected mode drivers like XCDROM32 which is
distributed with JEMM(EX). I am using it (or used it, because my hard
disk crashed and I have to reinstall pure DOS. As I want a "special"
DOS, I have to self-install most of programs and drivers without
install-program of FreeDOS 1.0 ;-) and I am glad with it.

I don't like FreeDOS-FDISK. I am using Extended FDISK, it is very good
and has a
boot manager included.

Another choice would be JEMM, which includes both, JEMM386 and HIMEM in
ONE driver.

[Freedos-user] LAME 3.97 final

2007-06-14 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

I compiled the latest version of LAME 3.97 final with DJGPP (had to change
the makefile).
NTOSKRNL.VXE said, that it is 5% faster than Blair's version 3.97b2, so I
thought, I have to announce it. ;-)

http://www.flox.at.tf

LAME is a mp3 encoder. (I used GCC 4.1.2., and compressed it with UPX.
Because I haven't used NCURSE, the screen output won't be that nice.)

NTFS4DOS has one problem...it isn'T a TSR you can start it at
commandline or autoexec.bat and it will start a second layer of
command.com. This will eat memory of 640k but should work with most

I read some of such arguments in the past (not from you, Eric :-).
Like "this wouldn't be DOS anymore..." or "then it would be like
Linux" or "I only want to have a MS-DOS replacement" etc. I like
the idea of a modern OS called DOS. I am using all of new
software/drivers which are available. If FreeDOS 1.1 or 2.0 will not
include an "enhanced configuration" I will think of an own
distribution.

DOS stands for me: compatiblity of old and new software, modular
design, possibility of 16-Bit, 32-Bit, real and protected mode. And of
a very very fast and small operating system.

why not? There could be a choice of "standard configuration" and

Also FDAPM & XDMA should be included in the enhanced config.sys.

[Freedos-user] On to FreeDOS 2.0...

2007-05-12 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi Jim, I all!

What should change with FreeDOS 2.0? Some ideas, I think, they have to
be a must :-)

*Using 4DOS as standard command tool, and Bash or freecom as choice.
*Using JEMM as memory manager
*Using HX Extender & Co to support Windows programs in DOS
*PythonD as modern script language
*Using an Editor which supports large files (like FED or SETEDIT)
*One standard file manager (my choice would be FW or NDN)
*No more 386- support

I also think, that it shouldn't be a BIG collection of all free DOS programs.
The distribution should contain less, but powerful programs. (Download
via WGET for additional tools could be possible.) If there are more
than one (like file managers) we could make a poll at freedos.org
where user and developer can choose them.

Network: Latest Arachne (a much more advanced version should be
distributed soon) is a ''must", also tools like WGET. And one big
problem still exists: a driver. So there should be a note at the
installer, which points to FreeDOS Wiki or another site, where a good
documentation exists ( about installing such a driver).

And the GUI? I would say OZONE :-))
Even with the drag'n'drop-bug it has many features and developing of
programs isn't difficult.

Re: [Freedos-user] Mplayer, dos & freedos?

2007-04-19 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi, yes it is possible :-)

You need HX-Extender, all binaries, also the part of GUI . Then you
need some DLLs... I think, not only from Windowsalso from Wine it
is possible.
Then it is possible to play full-screen Videos in DOS using Window's
port of mplayer.

Just ask at the forum if you want to have detailed info.

btw: there may be a problem with sound, because HX supports only SB16
at the moment. If you have a driver which emulates SB16 then you
shouldn't have problem.

Much luck! :-)
Bye
 Flo

PS: The main problem at the moment is the support of sound in DOS.
There are libraries which can be easily ported, or are ported, like
libmpeg2...
If someone has the knowledge and/or wants develope a dirver for
special sound card, please post a note at the Dr-DOS forum (or here).
