Well, I've tried installing video drivers for both Linux and Windows XP and
have not had any success with either. As a result of this, video is a
little sloppy and it is sluggish. I've tried all different versions of
drivers both from CD and website.

Not to want to break a deal here, but i'm just curious why you want to
sell it after just 2 weeks? I have the previous EPIA-M 1000 and am
actually already quite happy with that. DivX even played on the 800 and
this model has no troubles I notived.

I'll also try and answer some questions Olly posed , it's all from own
 experience though:

 1. The support and Xine really do help. I found it a little messy to set
up, but it is worth it. DVDs get the most from the upgrade.

 2. It's not the best in the world. that's the honest thing to say. It's
a lot better than the previous EPIA boards though and it's never
irritated anyone that watched a movie here yet.

 3. Never tried, my cable is so bad that I can only get the card to
detect 3 channels well enough to watch and I got rid of it (and plan to
switch to sat, anyone got any tips for a system?? (for mainland Europe))

 4. Don't have a 5.1 system yet My guess would be you're out of luck, but
maybe the new model does have a seperate auddio in on the board? (you
could look some wire into the case then)

Hope that helps, if only a bit,

 Patrick

   Hi

I'm new to the list - so sorry if this is a FAQ.

I'm thinking of setting up a mini-itx system to run Freevo on. I'm
sure
other people on the list have done the same thing, so I'm after some
tips.

I'm looking at using the EPIA-M 1GHz board. I'll be mostly playing
CDs,
MP3s, DVDs and DivXs. So, on to the questions...

   1) How is the video performance playing DVDs and DivXs? I've heard
that
there's now a driver for the MPEG2 decoder, and an optimised version
of
Xine around. Has anyone used these, and do they help?

   2) What's the TV-Out quality like?

   3) TV recording/time-shifting isn't a priority, but could the 1GHz C3
cope with it? Has anyone got something like the WinTV PVR cards
working
   doing hardware encoding?

   4) Sound issues. AIUI, to get 5.1 sound out, you can either use the
TV-Out port as an SPDIF connector, or use the headphone/mic/lin-in
sockets together. If I need TV-out, and I'm using a WinTV card that
connects to the line-in, can I still get 5.1 sound?

Well, that should be enough questions for now. I'm pretty impressed
with
Freevo so far. It's about 80% working on my system and I haven't even
   read the instructions yet :-)

   Olly

Fw: [Freevo-users] onboard video performance

2003-09-23 Thread Bart Heremans

3d isn't so important for dvd/divx, playback.
A mini-itx M9000 or M1 will do fine for these tasks. I'm using a m9000

I'm getting rid of my mini-itx system and looking for micro-atx/flex atx
type system. I noticed some of the boards have onboard video such as VIA
Savage 8 and Intel Extreme Graphics engine. I have heard that 2d performance
is decent for most of these, but 3D is extremely poor. For playing DVD's,
divx movies, and TV playback, how important is 3D. I really don't know what
difference is between 2d and 3d.

Yes, IMDB changed their structure some days ago. CVS version is
working.

For 1.3.4: it should work to copy src/video/fxdimdb.py from CVS.
For older versions: sorry

Only the search function is broken, the rest should still work.

I plan to make a release this week.

[Freevo-users] What I want from freevo, and Tuning into Freevo

2003-09-23 Thread Paul Cowper

Will I have to download that app (iirc tvtime) or is that usualy
included in a distro?

You see all I need to do is tune my tv card in, also even if I cant get
the programme schedule can I just set the time I want it to record a
perticular channel? Just like a vcr.

I have to say, it's a very usefull app, I know I have to get the screen
res sorted as it keeps switching from full screen to windowed.

I would also love to get some of my emulators running in it then I could
have a full mini-itx entertainment system underneith my tele. (emulators
look better on the tele anyhow)

But it would be useful if freevo could scan for tv channels and have a
complete channel setup system. That way when its sitting under my tele I
would never have to touch the XML or PY files, as much fun as they are
you cant do much with a remote controll !!.

Hey and then I could network it to my DVD-/+R box and any stuff I record
and wana keep in hard media then I can burn it, and guess what ... Watch
it on the freevo box!!

Its certainly a exiting project. I know that there are other systems and
some have the ability to pause live tv, but I sense something different
in freevo, and the fact that it came as an RPM and was easy to install.
(I sence RPM is getting more user friendly) I tried another system just
wouldent work, and wouldent tell me why!

I know that one day freevo will get to the level of a TiVo box but
better. Emulators/Mp3's/DVD/Games/Skins/TV/DVB?/Internet... The list
goes on.

Ok well I just wanna see this work, its looks fantastic and I am proud
to have it on my bOx, I just cant get it to work with my tele.

Anoter thing, Freevo manages to mount cd's ok, But will it un-mount
correctly. (Like a little eject button)

From Paul :)

You will need to download tht one seperately. I think it even has a
nice rpm for you. - http://tvtime.sourceforge.net/

You see all I need to do is tune my tv card in, also even if I cant get

It is better if you have xmltv channel listings. The Freevo web
interface lets you setup a recording for a specific channel and time (it
still has the infamous time off by one hour bug which I should fix
asap), you still need to configure TV_CHANNELS.

I am also currently working on making Freevo TV and recording work a lot
better when you have no tv listings.

I have to say, it's a very usefull app, I know I have to get the screen
res sorted as it keeps switching from full screen to windowed.
I am not sure if this is available with the version you are using, but
the next will have a '-fs' flag for X which gives better full-screening.

But it would be useful if freevo could scan for tv channels and have a
complete channel setup system. That way when its sitting under my tele I
Tvtime has a channel scanner library, maybe we can make a Freevo
interface to it someday.

Its certainly a exiting project. I know that there are other systems and

Thanks. It is also a fun project to work on! Someday it will be as
polished as tivo but with tonnes more features. :)

Also as for you needing to fine tune and use custom channel
freequencies, there is code in Freevo to do this but at the moment it
only works with tvtime (live tv viewing) or playing and recording using
a hauppage pvr-250/350 card. I am in-progress with integrating this
with the rest of the tv and recording of Freevo.

splashing water to put out flames :(

Dischi wrote:
One common problem. 'It hangs' doesn't help much. If I don't know
what happens, this will never change.

I installed freevo 1.3.4 fresh on RH8 from sf download page, (this was
almost 3wks ago so memory is fuzzy). When I ran freevo, graphics were
'blocky' instead of smooth and it wouldn't respond to keyboard input.
I had to actually kill the process to shut freevo down. So I replaced it
with the first version I had ever loaded (1.3.2)--- when I installed 1.3.4,
rh8 was a fresh install, freevo had not been loaded yet.

I'd like the dvd menu support that xine is supposed to use, but I'm
getting sick of 'fixing' each component that is necessary for freevo
(already worked alot to make mplayer work right).

A second common problem: Freevo has good support for the hardware the
developers have, they take care of it. But since I don't have more
than one graphic card (and don't need to), users have to help
users. You fixed each component. Good, than share your results with
the rest. _Everyone_ has write access to the WiKi on the homepage. If
each user shares the resultions they have, it would much easier for
new users, Freevo could integrate this knowledge.

I was contemplating writing a summary of my procedures for install as
I'm going to almost duplicate this first system and setup a 2nd freevo
box for myself (first one for my Dad). I considered doing this because
I've had such a hard time finding such step-by-step info. ducks to
avoid more flames I know the developers put a lot of blood, sweat,
and tears into coding and refining freevo, but if the info. isn't
available to help newcomers adopt freevo then your base of 'testers' that
COULD respond to your pleas for input are going to go to that same SMALL
group of developers that may be concentrating on fixing code or on their
own uses and limited hardware that they have already got trouble-shot and
working.

Someone wrote a howto for Freevo. He asked for help to make it
better. I guess the answers are below 10.

It would be nice to have his info linked from the freevo pages (not buried
in the documentation only but from a links page. I know documenting is a
pain in the ass as you stated, that's why I haven't started my list of
procedures...the other reason is I don't know if each step I'm doing is
going to work or break something (and I've been very limited in spare-time
to work with this project---between my business, wife, kids, etc.)

I'm still facing a problem with my capture card (BT878-based) where
I'm only getting garbage in top inch or so of picture and no real
picture---that will I'm sure burn-up countless hours researching and
 fixing whatever the problem is.

Ask here. If you know the answer some day, please add it to the docs
to avoid that the next one has the same problem.

I was planning on submitting a plea about the capture card next. I've
got ZERO experience with the damn thing in linux and info. on them
has been very limited (not in freevo mind you, I'm talking linux in
general). I was having trouble even finding how to run xawtv to see if
the card generates anything, then didn't know enough to trouble-shoot
the darn thing and submit an intelligent inquiry anywhere (freevo or
elsewhere).

This is a very challenging project for those without significant experience
in linux and the toughest part is figuring out 'where' the question should
be asked...is it too general a question to burden the freevo list with, is
it a problem in mplayer and should go to their list, is it a red hat problem
and should go to an appropriate list there, etc..

I do appreciate the effort and responses you guys have all given on my
problem and I will try to contribute where I can as 'repayment'. I take my
hat off to you developers for working hard to create freevo from scratch and
piece this complex puzzle together.

Keir

2003-09-23 Thread Paul Cowper
If that allows me to do what I want then great, The confusing thing is
that there are 2 areas in Freevo that allow me to specify channells but
I am unsure which one actualy sets up the channel order. IE I can fine
SKY ONE on XXKhz and I could use TvTime to find the channel number
but as I say there are 2 sections, One that allows you to set the
frequency(Frequency_table?), the other allows you to set the channel
number(listings?). But I have specified a frequency in the Frequency
Table yet I can not use it!!

Would you module work (I have 1.3.4 Freevo) which is simplist and how
woul I set these up in the freevos config?

I can show you how to hand hack stationlist.xml in tvtime to use custom
frequencies if you want to use 1.3.4 but a better alternative might be
to use a snapshot with my new tvtime module in my WIP directory
WIP/Ruelle/tvtime.py. And then to use a Frequency_TABLE in
local_conf.py.
My new tvtime plugin will pickup that table and generate the custom
frequency list for you.

I'm running a redhat 9 system with freevo 1.3.4 and can watch TV just
fine with my ATI TV Wonder. I am now trying to record a show however
I'm unsure how to proceed.

The docs mention running the recording daemon every minute or so (I have
a cron job set to run every minute) and I presume after reading the help
(press H at the main tv menu) that I must press F6. I have even created
the recording directory (matches the freevo_config.py location). Still
no dice.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? I've read the online docs and
been lurking in this list for some time hoping to find the answer. Wish
it had a search option so I could study it further. Thoughts?

[Freevo-users] Fonts

2003-09-23 Thread Ryan Novosielski
I am having a bit of a problem with freevo, as the docs are a little thin
in some places (understandably so). I am using Freevo over tdfxfb, and I
have switched the skin back to blue_round1 (interestingly enough, I CAN'T
set it back to back to the other one, which I thought was blue_round2).
However, on the Main Menu, not all the choices fit and they are needlessly
large. Also, the Program Guide would be still quite readable in a smaller
font -- right now they too large to fit everything comfortably. Where are
options like this?
