[Freevo-users] What happened to tvcentric.com?

2010-08-28 Thread Art S R
For the past month or so, this site has been "down for maintenance".
Does anyone here know if it's coming back or gone forever? It was
really handy for looking up the svn source files to see if there have
been changes to a particular file that might have corrected a problem:

Yes, using an IRBlaster and the cable company box has allowed me to
continue using my Freevo system for recording TV programs. However,
this kludge is not 100% reliable. Sometimes, one of the digits is
missed (e.g., 189 becomes 18 or 89) and, although recording starts at
the correct time, the wrong channel's program is recorded. Other
times, it seems LIRC isn't working correctly and no new channel is
tuned via the IRBlaster, so the recording starts at the right time,
but for the previously tuned (default) channel so, again, the wrong
program is recorded. In the latter situation, I have to reboot my
system so LIRC can load correctly. I don't know if the problem is
with LIRC, the script, the IRBlaster, or the cable box. Probably each
of those at some time or another. That's why I was hoping to
eliminate all these variables by getting a new card with clear QAM
support so the TV card itself can tune to the correct station without
dependency on other devices and software. Unfortunately, my cable
company's decision to remove most of the channels on their line-up
from clear QAM has thwarted my plans.

My rough guess is that it's 95%+ reliable, but it's very frustrating
when there's a special program I want (worse yet, a program that my
wife really wants) and it's the very one that records incorrectly.
Life was much simpler before the cable company switched to digital
signals and you could have your TV or TV card tune to the correct
channel without being forced to use their box.

Re: [Freevo-users] Wintv PVR 150 question

2010-08-12 Thread Art S R
As Adam had mentioned, the 150 won't work on your cable service now
that they've gone digital. I'm on Comcast and they made the
switch-over here in March 2009. I was able to continue using my old
analog WinTV card by incorporating their converter box. My TV card
stayed tuned to Channel 3 and I had to use a serial port IRBlaster
(http://www.irblaster.info/) and a script to send signals to the box
to change to the correct channel for recording.

Initially, Comcast carried all their non-premium channels in clear QAM
(e.g., History, TLC, Syfy, TruTV), so I was able to view them on my
new flatscreen TV without the Comcast box since the TV supported clear
QAM. Recently, I decided to replace my analog TV card with a new
Hauppauge WinTV HVR 950Q USB tuner. Since this unit supported clear
QAM, I figured I could get rid of the Comcast box and IRBlaster
kludge. Although the USB tuner itself works fine, unbeknownst to me
at the time of my purchase, Comcast has since dropped most of the
channels carried in clear QAM. In other words, if I want to get all
the channels included in my cable plan, I have to use one of their
cable boxes to tune them in, regardless of the TV card's native
capabilities. Unless you want to receive over the air broadcasts in
ATSC, I can't think of a good reason to get a "digital" card. Clear
QAM, which is supported by the new cards, is beholden to your cable
company's largesse... initially, you may get all your channels, but
the cable company may switch them around (which will mess up your
scheduled recordings) or remove them entirely without notice.

By the way, when my cable company made the switch to digital, they
offered subscribers a free set-top box (with on-demand capability) and
up to two additional limited function "digital transport adapters". I
used one of the latter boxes for my Freevo system. So, it's possible
your cable company too may not charge an additional fee for a
converter box.

I have a similar requirement where I want my Freevo system to remain
up throughout the day but to to have it shutdown after midnight. I
picked an innocuous task (e.g., klipper) and added it to my
AUTOSHUTDOWN_PROCESS_LIST so that, whenever it is running,
autoshutdown will not take effect.

I created a simple script that is called by OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP
which launches the innocuous task at Freevo startup if the time-of-day
is between 06:00 and 24:00. I have a second script that is invoked by
crontab at midnight; this script kills the innocuous process so that
the autoshutdown function is free to shutdown the system as defined in
my autoshutdown configuration. I have AUTOSHUTDOWN_TIMER_TIMEOUT set
to 5 minutes, so the system shuts down at 00:05. If a scheduled
recording starts up the system in the middle of the night, the system
will shutdown automatically 5 minutes after the end of the recording
since the innocuous task is not launched by OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP
at night.

I also have AUTOSHUTDOWN_DEFAULT_WAKEUP set to 08:30 so that my Freevo
system always starts in the morning and it will remain up throughout
the day and evening (since the innocuous process is running).

Re: [Freevo-users] Schedule recording information for shutdown script

2009-08-20 Thread Art S R
Freevo has a built-in autoshutdown function that can be enabled and
configured in your local_conf.py. Look in the AUTOSHUTDOWN
CONFIGURATION section. It's pretty well documented in the file itself
and there are options to shutdown and startup at various times or
based on certain events. There's a PROCESS LIST where you can specify
which processes, if active, will prevent autoshuAtdown from initiating
even if the designated shutdown interval has elapsed.

I don't know if it's documented anywhere. I had tried and abandoned
using the TVTime plugin years ago because I didn't liked the
mismatched channel numbers on the OSD. When I ran into problems
watching live TV with the mplayer plugin a couple of months ago, I
went back to using TVTime and, after digging through the mail archives
more extensively for a solution to the numbering issue, I found out
about this variable.

[Freevo-users] Fix to allow a command to display an image

2009-04-19 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

I've always wanted to display an associated image with a command when
I scroll through the Commands menu (e.g., Firefox logo when the
Commands menu option for launching a browser is selected). Someone
had asked the same question back in 2007 but I didn't see a
resolution. After digging through the code in command.py and adding a
bunch of print statements, I finally found a solution that involves
just a one-line change in the code:

From:
item.image   = util.getimage(item.cmd)

To:
item.image   = fxd.childcontent(node, 'image')

This change looks for an image tag in the commands fxd file, where you
would specify the location and name of the image file you want to
display with this command. For example:

/path/to/myscript.sh
/path/to/logos/mylogo.png

Display an image with my command

In the original statement, it looks like util.getimage is used to
retrieve an image from the location of the command? Maybe there's
some trick to getting this to work, but I tried placing an image file
in the same directory as my command and util.getimage(item.cmd) just
returned "None".

Anyway, with the simple change above, I can now specify an image for a
command in the same manner as is done for other types of fxd files,
such as those for audio and image items.

For example, can it be defined in a skin somehow?

These are attractive, clean skins with good selection of graphics for
the various function pages. Reminds me of the Panorama skin, but
available in 9 different colors (even Elizabeth may find one here that
she likes :) ). I think the dark-blue and dark-red work best since
they offer the most color contrast with the fonts used.

I had trouble untarring the downloaded file. Luckily, the skin files
were extracted before ark eventually crashed.

I can start on this, but my Freevo 1.8.3 system that I used to capture
my screenshots is still in a state of flux and not all the media
options are implemented yet on this box, so I can't really show
screenshots of those features yet. My production box has all the
bells and whistles, but it's still running Freevo 1.6.x and I'd rather
use screenshots from a more current version in case there are
differences in the look-and-feel.

Well, this is interesting.  The syntax of the mplayer command is
identical whether it's a string or a list:

Running (list) '/usr/bin/mplayer -slave -vo xv,sdl,x11, -ao
oss:/dev/dsp -autosync 100 -nolirc -nojoystick -autoq 100 -screenw 800
-screenh 600 -fs -nocache tv:// -tv
driver=v4l2:freq=55.250:device=/dev/video0:input=0:norm=NTSC:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yuy2
' with pid 19221 priority -20

Running (str) '/usr/bin/mplayer -slave -vo xv,sdl,x11, -ao
oss:/dev/dsp -autosync 100 -nolirc -nojoystick -autoq 100 -screenw 800
-screenh 600 -fs -nocache tv:// -tv
driver=v4l2:freq=55.250:device=/dev/video0:input=0:norm=NTSC:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yuy2'
in shell with pid 21625 priority 0

However, running as a list does not work using either the original
"_debug_(' '.join(command[1:]))" or the revised "_debug_('%r' %
(command,))" statement.  On the other hand, when the string is passed
to a shell, the TV program comes in loud and clear.

Re: [Freevo-users] Problem watching live TV with mplayer [RESOLVED]

2009-03-20 Thread Art S R
After much befuddlement and frustration, I've finally resolved this
problem. I went back to earlier versions of mplayer.py in svn until I
found the latest version that would work displaying live TV (10609)
and did a diff with the version I was using from Freevo 1.8.3 to see
if I could figure out what's causing the recent versions to not work.
After much more tracing, I located the problem here:

240#command = self.sort_filter(command)
241
242command += ['%(url)s' % args]
243
244_debug_(' '.join(command[1:]))
245
246self.mode = mode

Although the debug statement in line 244 was showing the correct
mplayer command in my log:

/usr/bin/mplayer -slave -vo xv,sdl,x11, -ao oss:/dev/dsp -autosync 100
-nolirc -nojoystick -autoq 100 -screenw 800 -screenh 600 -fs -nocache
tv:// -tv
driver=v4l2:freq=55.250:device=/dev/video0:input=0:norm=NTSC:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yuy2

this command is never actually constructed for execution. That's why
when I copied this debug line from my log and pasted it into a
terminal session, it would work correctly. In other works, debug
displays the correct syntax of the mplayer command that is presumed to
be executed, but that's not what is actually executed. So, I just
added the following statement and now the mplayer plug-in displays the
correct channel for watching live TV:

245command = (' '.join(command[1:]))

I don't know if this is the "right" way to fix the problem, but it
works for me and hopefully it may help others.

Last night, I was looking at an earlier version of recordserver.py
that did not have this error and saw that it was using
"rpc.connect(recordserver)" instead of "rpc.register(recordserver)".
On a whim, I changed that statement in you lastest svn version and, lo
and behold, recordserver was able to launch successfully and record
programs. However, when I recorded back-to-back programs, the second
one was still starting 1 minute late:

Seeing that generic_record.py was involved, I checked svn and saw that

Unfortunately, the 1 minute delay between program recordings was still

When I get some more time and am feeling more ambitious, I'll install

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the quick fix, Duncan. I tried the new recordserver.py and

Not to my knowledge (which is admittedly limited). You can still use
"Watch TV" to display your TV guide but, without a TV card, you won't
be able to watch or record TV over the air or via a cable/satellite
service. In other words, I don't think you can define a VIDEO_GROUP
to display an Internet TV station. If you don't like having to choose
a menu option labeled "Movies" to watch Internet TV, you can always
rename that option in the skin you are using to something like
"Internet TV / Videos". If you don't plan on using the "Watch TV"
option at all, you can even remove it from your main menu by including
plugin.remove('tv') in your local_conf.py.

Try renaming kid-cover.png to cover.png and place this file in the
same directory as your folder.fxd. If that works, then you don't need
to use the img-cover="kid-cover.png" parameter in your folder tag.

Hope that helps.

I'm assuming you are referring to streaming an Internet TV station?
If so, you can create an fxd file where you would provide the
station's URL and description and then add a reference to this fxd
file in your VIDEO_ITEMS in your local_conf.py file. See the
"Streaming web tv / video" section of this wiki page for details and
examples:  http://doc.freevo.org/MovieConfig

This would then appear as a selection under the "Movies" main menu option.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Freevo-users] Help freevo - put some screenshots on the wiki

2009-03-16 Thread Art S R
Hi John,

I've updated the http://doc.freevo.org/FreevoInAction page and created
separate pages for each of the skins. From the FreevoInAction page,
you can click on a thumbnail for a skin to see the screenshots of
various Freevo functions displayed with that skin. For consistency, I
moved the existing blurr and panorama screenshots to their own pages
as well. Since I'm not familiar with wiki etiquette, I did not know
if it would be alright or not to replace the existing screenshots with
my own for these two skins, so I played it safe and kept the
originals.

Hi Duncan,

I'm not using any of these post-recording functions so, in theory, the
second recording should start immediately after the first has ended.
Can you think of anything else that might delay the second recording?
The delay is exactly 1 minute every time, so I'm inclined to think
it's something inherent in the code rather than due to the process
waiting for an external event to complete (e.g., post-recording
function).

Thanks for your help.

Actually, the 'year' variable displays the date/timestamp of the
recorded program, such as: "(Fri, 27 Feb 2009 03:00:00 PST)"
displayed to the left of the recording length (e.g., "59 min"). This
entire date/timestamp line was missing underneath the program
description, leaving only the recording length. I find it useful to
know when a particular recording was made.

Here's my 'freevo vg' output using the svn vg.py you sent me:

TV_VIDEO_GROUPS = [
  VideoGroup( # normal device, group 0
desc='BT878 video (Hauppauge (bt878))',
group_type='normal',
vdev='/dev/video0',
vvbi='/dev/vbi0',
adev=None,
input_type='Television',
input_num=0,
tuner_norm='PAL',
tuner_chanlist='FixMe',
record_group=None
  ),
]

Looks like it's erroneously using tuner_norm='PAL' (instead of
'NTSC') and it doesn't know what tuner_chanlist should be. By the
way, the Freevo 1.8.3 version of vg.py listed all the available
tv_norm standards:

tuner_norm='SECAM-DK,SECAM-L,NTSC-M,NTSC-M-KR,PAL,SECAM-G,PAL-M,SECAM-H,SECAM,SECAM-B,PAL-DK,SECAM-Lc,PAL-I,PAL-BG,NTSC-M-JP,PAL-60,PAL-N,NTSC,PAL-H,PAL-Nc',

but tuner_chanlist also said 'FixMe'.

early, so I set TV_RECORD_PADDING_POST = 8 and my recordings then
ended just 2 seconds before the scheduled end time. However, the PRE
value still seems to be precise only down to the minutes level. If I
recall correctly, in my situation, entering a PRE value of 0-14 had no
effect on start time; entering a PRE value of 15-60 started recording
1 minute earlier than the default (not necessarily the scheduled)
start time.

So, if my findings (Freevo 1.8.3) also apply to your situation, your
PRE=3 would have no effect on the default (PRE=0) start time and your
POST=2 would delay the recording end time by 2 seconds compared to
POST=0.

[Freevo-users] Fwd: Problem watching live TV with mplayer

Hi Duncan,

Here are the relevant lines from my local_conf.py:

NORM = 'ntsc'
INPUT = 'television'
CHANLIST = 'us-cable'
TV_DRIVER = 'v4l2'
TV_DEVICE = '/dev/video0'
TV_INPUT = 0
TV_SETTINGS = 'NORM INPUT CHANLIST DEVICE'

I used the same values in my previous Freevo installations (1.6.x, 1.7.x)
and did not have problems watching live TV with the mplayer plugin.

Thanks,

Art SR

Re: [Freevo-users] Recording start time is late (Freevo 1.8.3)

2009-03-10 Thread Art S R
Hi Duncan,

Unfortunately, many US cable stations run their programs back-to-back with
no commercial breaks in-between programs. Indeed, the closing scene and
narrative are broadcast simultaneously with the closing credits. As soon as
the credits end, the next program starts. They put their commercials
(adverts) elsewhere during the program.

Anyway, I found that recordserver.py has the following code to delay the
start of recording until 45 seconds into the minute, so I changed it to
sec=0:
kaa.AtTimer(recordserver.handleAtTimer).start(sec=45)
Now, recording starts at the top of the minute.

The one remaining problem is that, if I have consecutive recordings, the
second program's start time is delayed by 1 minute. This occurs even when
using all the default settings ("sec=45" in recordserver.py and no PRE/POST
recording padding values in local_conf.py). In the recordserver log, it
shows "overlap_duration=0", yet the second recording doesn't start
immediately even though the previous program has already ended:

2009-03-09 22:29:50,898 INFO recordserver.py (1337): RECORD_STOP Mon Mar

In my Freevo 1.7.3 installation, the second program starts immediately after
the first program ends, without the 1 minute delay.

Re: [Freevo-users] Recording start time is late (Freevo 1.8.3)

2009-03-09 Thread Art S R
I checked my Freevo 1.7.x installation (where recordings start at the
correct time) and see that recordserver.py (revision 9844) has some code to
check for the "top of the minute" in startMinuteCheck(self) and
minuteCheck(self).  These aren't in recordserver.py for Freevo 1.8.3.  Is
there some other routine in the current version that syncs recordserver to
start recordings at the beginning of the minute (0 seconds) instead of 45
seconds later?

[Freevo-users] TV recordings don't display year on Recorded shows page

2009-03-08 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

I noticed that when I go to the Recorded shows page, the year
(date/timestamp) field is not displayed to the left of runtime for any of my
recordings in Freevo 1.8.3. I verified the fxd files contained year info.
When I ran debug, I noticed that mediainfo.py was assigning userdate as the
year. Checking svn, I saw that in revision 10905 of mediainfo.py, there's a
comment "Fixed missing year item, change to userdate in kaa.metadata" and
the following statements were added to def __getitem__(self, key):
if key == 'year':
key = 'userdate'
Even though the Freevo 1.8.3 version of mediainfo.py includes these
statements, year is not displayed. However, when I commented out these two
statements, the year information is now displayed correctly when looking at
the descriptions of my recorded TV shows. It seems the fix is what actually
is causing the problem with the year not displaying? Or is this dependent
on the kaa.metadata version? I'm using kaa.metadata-0.7.5 from sourceforge.

[Freevo-users] Recording start time is late (Freevo 1.8.3)

2009-03-05 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

I noticed that the beginnings of my recorded TV programs were truncated, so
I looked in recordserver-1000.log and saw that recordserver was starting all
recordings 45 seconds *after* the scheduled start time for each program:

2009-03-04 17:30:45,001 INFO recordserver.py (944): going to record: Wed
Mar 04 17:30->18:00 (17:30)  I9.28458213.microsoft.com BBC World News

04 17:30->18:00 (17:30)  I9.28458213.microsoft.com BBC World News

In the sample above, the recording should have started at 17:30:00, but it
started at 17:30:45 instead.  My local_conf.py has 'TV_RECORD_PADDING_PRE =
0', so the recordings should be starting at the designated time. Anyway, I
decided to compensate by changing this value to 'TV_RECORD_PADDING_PRE =
45'. However, this resulted in the recordings starting 15 seconds *before*
the scheduled start time, as shown below (17:59:45 instead of the expected
18:00:00):

2009-03-05 17:59:45,003 INFO recordserver.py (944): going to record: Thu

05 18:00->18:30 (18:00)  I28.28460456.microsoft.com BBC World News

I played around with various values for TV_RECORD_PADDING_PRE and found that
if the value is 15 to 45, recordings will start 15 seconds too early. If
the value is less than 15, then recordings will start 45 seconds too late.
I see that there's in comment in local_conf.py that, although the padding
time is designated in seconds, precision is only at the minute level. This
could explain why I couldn't set a start time in between 15 seconds too
early or 45 seconds too late (-15 secs to +45 secs = 60 secs). However, I
am able to set TV_RECORD_PADDING_POST to sub-minute precision. In the first
set of log entries above, note that the stop time for the program was at 51
seconds (9 seconds before the scheduled stop time). I added some seconds to
TV_RECORD_PADDING_POST and you'll note in the second set of log entries that
stop time was at 59 seconds (1 second before the scheduled stop time). In
other words, I was able to tweak the stop time by a few seconds via
TV_RECORD_PADDING_POST, but a similar action with TV_RECORD_PADDING_PRE did
not yield any change less than 60 seconds (1 minute).

Anyway, I can accept the inprecision of TV_RECORD_PADDING_PRE, but how can I
get my recordings to start exactly at the scheduled start time without
trying to compensate via TV_RECORD_PADDING_PRE (which doesn't yield good
results anyway -- 15 seconds too early or 45 seconds late are both bad).
What's causing recordings to start 45 seconds too late with the default
settings?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Re: [Freevo-users] Problem watching live TV with mplayer

2009-03-03 Thread Art S R
Hi Duncan,

I tried 'v4l2-ctl --set-freq=187.250' but nothing changed on the Freevo
window playing live TV -- it still displayed the ghosted random station. I
then issued 'v4l2-ctl --all' and noticed that the Video Standard is set to
PAL even though it should have been NTSC as it was passed to the mplayer
command in the 'norm=NTSC' parameter. When I issued 'v4l2-ctl
--set-standard=ntsc', then the correct station popped up in the Freevo TV
window. However, if I hit Esc to return to the Freevo TV guide and select
any station, it displays the garbage screen again and 'v4l2-ctl --all' shows
that Freevo had changed the Video Standard back to PAL.

I even grabbed the svn version of mplayer.py, but it made no difference.

Any ideas why the exact same command, when issued outside of Freevo,
displays the station correctly but, when passed by Freevo to mplayer, the
video standard is changed from NTSC to PAL?

Thanks.

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo 1.8.3: Webserver shutdown error

2009-03-03 Thread Art S R
Thanks, Duncan. Changing that one statement did the trick. I had already
tried the svn copy of /usr/bin/freevo but when I launched 'freevo webserver
start', it did not return control of the terminal session to me, so there
are probably other changes in that version that are not compatible with my
installation. I reverted to the copy of /usr/bin/freevo that came with
1.8.3 and I just made the one-line change to it and it's fine now on
shutdown.

Thanks again for your help.

[Freevo-users] Freevo 1.8.3: Webserver shutdown error

2009-03-03 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

When I shutdown Freevo and the webserver plugin is stopped, I get the
following messages in webserver-1000.log:

As you can see above, the webserver was started successfully at
00:21:32,420. When the Freevo menu is displayed, I select the Shutdown
option immediately and the ensuing traceback messages are displayed. I
don't see anything to indicate what may have caused the exception
condition. The webserver appears to be functioning correctly other than for
this error when the webserver is stopped.

Any ideas what may be causing this? Thanks.

[Freevo-users] Problem watching live TV with mplayer

2009-02-27 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

I just installed Freevo 1.8.3 on a box with a Hauppauge BT878 card and
running Mepis 8. When I watch live TV by selecting a station from the TV
guide, the image that is displayed is either a green screen with video noise
and no audio, or a heavily-ghosted video image from a random TV station (not
the one I picked) with good audio. Here's the relevant section from my
main-1000.log showing childapp.py and mplayer.py:

2009-02-27 14:36:02,359 DEBUGchildapp.py (133): Running (list)
'/usr/bin/mplayer -slave -vo xv,sdl,x11, -ao oss:/dev/dsp -autosync 100

-tv
driver=v4l2:freq=187.250:device=/dev/video0:input=0:norm=NTSC:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yuy2
' with pid 15704 priority -20
2009-02-27 14:36:02,361 DEBUGchildapp.py (392): logging stdout child to
"/var/log/freevo/mplayer-stdout-1000-1235774162.log"
2009-02-27 14:36:02,362 DEBUGchildapp.py (392): logging stderr child to
"/var/log/freevo/mplayer-stderr-1000-1235774162.log"
2009-02-27 14:36:02,363 DEBUGchildapp.py (150): /usr/bin/renice -20 -p

log
2009-02-27 14:36:20,116 DEBUGchildapp.py (411): stderr: no data, closing
log

The last two lines are where I manually exited from viewing live TV. I
included them here to show that no other errors/warnings came up after
mplayer.py launched the TV app at 14:36:02,795 until the time I stopped the
app.

If I copy the mplayer command generated by the childapp as shown in the log:

/usr/bin/mplayer -slave -vo xv,sdl,x11, -ao oss:/dev/dsp -autosync 100
-nolirc -nojoystick -autoq 100 -screenw 800 -screenh 600 -fs -nocache tv://
-tv
driver=v4l2:freq=187.250:device=/dev/video0:input=0:norm=NTSC:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yuy2

and paste it into a terminal session, mplayer has no trouble displaying the
correct TV station video and audio.

I can record TV programs and play them back back fine. It's only watching
live TV from the Freevo TV guide that has a problem.

If I switch the TV plugin mplayer to TVTime, then live TV works fine.

I searched the archives and found a couple of others who reported similar
problems in the past, but it doesn't appear their problems were ever
resolved. One person reported this problem occurred while changing channels
on live TV, but I didn't even have to change channels to encounter this
problem.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

resolving the URL. So, as a test, I modified applelib.py and changed the
_DEFAULT_URL from "www.apple.com" to the IP address (17.112.152.32) and that
worked! I am able to download and view the trailers now. I don't know why
it's (urllib.py? httplib.py?) not able to resolve www.apple.com in the URL
but, until I get this figured out, this workaround will suffice. Just in
case the IP address may change, I added a couple of lines at the beginning
of applelib.py to ping www.apple.com to acquire the current IP address and
assign it to _DEFAULT_URL.

OK, after some debugging, I found out what I was doing wrong. Since I
wasn't making any changes to the VCR_CMD options, I just left VCR_CMD
commented out so it would default to what's in freevo_config.py. I didn't
realize I had to enable VCR_CMD in my local_conf.py in order for it to pick
up my override TV_DRIVER='v4l2' and other VCR_CMD settings in local_conf.py.

With VCR_CMD uncommented in my local_conf.py, I was able to undo my change
in freevo_config.py, and mencorder now correctly uses the v4l2 driver as
defined in local_conf.py.

This looks interesting from the screenshots, but I just looked at the
mailing list and it's overrun with spammers and has very few legitimate
posts. Without an active community, I'm a bit reluctant to spend a lot of
time trying to get this working. I'll stick with Freevo for now. :)

[Freevo-users] TV_DRIVER in local_conf.py does not override freevo_config.py

2007-09-27 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

Is anybody else having a problem with the TV_DRIVER entry in
local_conf.py not overriding the corresponding value in freevo_config.py
for TV recordings? I have TV_DRIVER='v4l2' in my local_conf.py but,
looking in my recordserver log, I see that it's still using driver=v4l
in the mencoder command. Also, the debug entries in the recordserver
log list the local_conf.py overrides in effect, but TV driver is not
among them. I know my local_conf.py is otherwise working correctly
because my other settings (including other TV settings) are getting
picked up. I had to change the TV_DRIVERS setting in freevo_config.py
from v4l to v4l2 in order for the correct driver to be used for
mencoder, but I would prefer to have the local_conf.py override work
correctly instead. I'm running Freevo 1.6.3 and 1.7.3.

Thanks.

[Freevo-users] Scanning Apple for trailers crashes Freevo

2007-09-26 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

With all the recent discussion about Apple Trailers on the list, I
decided to try it for myself. I was able to get it installed without
any problems. When I select Apple Trailers, the pop-up window appears
with the progress bar and message saying that it's "Scanning Apple for
trailers". After about 30-60 seconds, Freevo will crash. I'm running
Freevo 1.7.3 and using the version of applelib.py and appletrailers.py
that came with it. I also tried the latest svn version, but the files
appear to be identical to the ones from 1.7.3, and the results are the same.

Here's the traceback:

Did you also try John's suggestion of placing the files in:
/usr/share/pycentral/python-freevo/site-packages/freevo/video/plugins/
(note that it's video/plugins)

and leaving the local_conf.py entry as:
plugin.activate('video.appletrailers')

This should place the Apple Trailers option under the Freevo Movies menu.

Yes, I'm running Freevo 1.7. However, even though I am able to get the
plugin loaded, I am not able to successfully download the trailers. After
running for a minute or so, the plugin crashes Freevo. I'll report this in
another thread.

Copy the two files to:
/usr/share/pycentral/python-freevo/site-packages/freevo/plugins

In local_conf.py:
plugin.activate('appletrailers')

Restart Freevo and you should now see an "Apple Trailers" option on the main
menu.

When I started using Freevo casually less than 2 years ago, I never

I understand it will probably yield unacceptable performance on your
rig, but have you tried dropping back to the vesa driver to see if
Freevo will at least come up?

Actually, the skipped menu level problem was in my other thread and I
fixed that in album_tree.py. This particular problem has to do with
osd.py getting executed a second time after Album Tree finishes playing
the first track. The screen is cleared and displays mostly black except
for the portions that get updated. However, if I hit the Esc key to go
back to the track listing page and start playing again, osd.py is not
executed again and the screen does not go black again when the first
track ends. Even if I switch to other Freevo functions (such as TV,
movies) and go back to Album Tree later, the black screen problem does
not recur. It only happens when I restart Freevo and the first time I
play a track in Album Tree for that Freevo session. Commenting out the
AUDIO_LOG event somehow stops Album Tree from calling osd.py again after
it plays the first track.

Re: [Freevo-users] AlbumTree clears screen after first track

2007-09-15 Thread Art S R
It took me awhile and going down several false trails, but I finally
found where the problem lies -- it's in playlist.py. After some tracing
and noting the comment that says, "That doesn't belong here! It should
be part of the player!!!", I commented out the following lines in the
eventhandler section:

#if event == PLAY_END:
#if self.current_item and self.current_item.type == 'audio':
#rc.post_event(Event(AUDIO_LOG,
arg=self.current_item.filename))

After making this change, AlbumTree no longer restarts the OSD after
playing the first track, so I don't get the black screen anymore. So
far, I haven't encountered any ill-effects from removing this code.

I don't think there's a way of doing this currently in Freevo. However,
it would be nice if there's another selection field in Manual Record
where, in addition to Name, Channel, Start date/time, Stop date/time,
you could also specify Once, Daily (weekdays), Daily (all days), or Weekly.

By the way, in case you didn't already know, the SchedulesDirect service
(which has stepped in the fill the void left by labs.zap2it.com's
departure) just announced a price reduction from $15 for 3 months to $15
for 6 months. So, for a little more that 8 cents a day, we can still
have the convenience of on-line TV schedules for our Freevo boxes.

I get the same crash condition on my Freevo 1.7.3 installation (was fine
in 1.6.x); however, in my situation, the crash occurs when I use the
period key on my keyboard. Using the eject button on the CD drive works
fine. Also, the problem only occurs if I hit the period key to eject
the tray when there's no media in the drive or if I hit the period key
to close the tray and there's no media.

Digging around in rom_drives.py, I noticed that the logic used for
"open" differs from that used for "close". So, I modified the "dir ==
'open'" section along the lines of "dir == 'close'" as follows:

296,303c296,305
< if os.uname()[0] == 'FreeBSD':
< s = ioctl(fd, CDIOCEJECT, 0)
< else:
< s = ioctl(fd, CDROMEJECT)
< self.tray_open = 1
< finally:
< os.close(fd)

> finally:
> os.close(fd)

e), config.DWARNING)

I'm not a programmer, so I don't know if the above is the "right" way to
fix the problem or not, but Freevo no longer crashes when I use the
period key to open/close the CD drive and there's no media in the tray;
instead, a warning message is written to the log.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Freevo-users] AlbumTree navigation

2007-09-11 Thread Art S R
I've found the problem in album_tree.py. I commented out the
reload_func parameter for myobjectmenu in the onchoose_main definition
thusly:

   def onchoose_main(self,arg=None, menuw=None):
"""
main menu
"""
#
items = []
for tree in self.album_tree_list:
items.append(menu.MenuItem(tree.name
,action=self.onchoose_node,arg=[tree,[]]) )

myobjectmenu = menu.Menu(_('Album Tree'), items)
 #reload_func=menuw.back_one_menu )

This is similar to what's already done in the onchoose_node definition.

Now, the tree listing menu is not skipped when I back out of the
lower-level (node) menus.

Well, I'm glad to learn I'm not the only one seeing this problem.

I did some more testing by having OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP execute a
script to simply echo a message. As expected, this message is displayed
when I launch Freevo. However, when I use AlbumTree to play an album,
this message is displayed again when the first track ends and the second
track begins playing. This appears to confirm that, for some reason, the
OSD is restarted at this point. If I hit Esc and replay the album, this
message is not displayed. Nor is it redisplayed on subsequent
invocations of AlbumTree. However, as noted in my original post, this
problem recurs whenever I restart Freevo.

[Freevo-users] AlbumTree clears screen after first track

2007-09-11 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

Has anyone else encountered the following problem with Album Tree?

1. Select "Album Tree" from the Freevo Music menu
2.  Select an album
3. Select the first track of the album to play
4. When the first track completes playing and the next track commences,
the screen is cleared and displays black except for the portions that
get updated, such as elapsed time (for the second track that is now
playing) and idlebar data such as procstats and clock.
5. If I hit Esc to return to the track listing page and then select any
track to play, this "blanking" problem doesn't occur again when the
player goes from one track to the next. In fact, the problem doesn't
occur again until the next time I restart Freevo and use Album Tree.
6. This problem does not occur when I use the standard Freevo "Music
Collection" option, defined in AUDIO_ITEMS, to play an album.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'm running Freevo 1.6.5 and 1.7.3.

[Freevo-users] AlbumTree navigation

2007-09-08 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

The AlbumTree plug-in seems to skip a menu level when regressing back to
the main menu with the various AlbumTree choices. Starting from the
Freevo menu option for Music, when I drill down, the sequence is:

Music > AlbumTree > List of trees (select "Artist/Album/Track") > List
of Artists > List of Albums > List of tracks

When I regress by hitting the Escape key, the sequence is:

List Tracks > List of Albums > List of Artists > AlbumTree > Music

The menu level for the list of trees is skipped. This happens with all
the AlbumTree choices. Is this a bug? I'm running Freevo 1.6.5 and
1.7.3 on separate boxes and the problem occurs on both.

I'm using an Antec NSK1300 for my Freevo box. It accepts a standard
mATX motherboard, so you have your choice of CPUs, on-board video,
sound, etc. It's not as elegant as cases designed specifically for HTPC
purposes, but it's less expensive and more flexible for my needs. The
biggest problem with most cases is that they are too deep for my
bookcase. The NSK1300 is only about 13" (33cm) deep.

The power supply uses a 120mm fan and is relatively quiet. One caveat
is that the design of the power supply limits the height of the CPU
cooler. I had to remove the fan from my Thermaltake Silent Boost in
order for the heat sink to fit. The case provides a bracket that mounts
on the power supply and you can attach your CPU fan to it and position
it over the heat sink. I'm using a low-noise 120mm Scythe fan to cool
the CPU and promote overall airflow within the case.

Another caveat is that there' only one 5.25" external bay on the case,
so you will have to get creative in order to mount a VFD unit. I'm
using a slim notebook DVD drive installed in a 5.25" bay converter that
also has room for a 3.5" device, which could be used for a floppy drive,
card reader or VFD unit.

In addition to the Scythe fan and notebook DVD drive, I'm also using a
notebook hard drive and an AMD Geode NX1750 CPU, since my goal is low
power, heat and noise.

As a test, I created 3 sets of files about 1 minute apart: xx_Able and
xx_Able.fxd. The fxd files have of "Able xx" and
of "xx_Able". As expected, these files initially have the same mtime
and ctime values:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Travel]$ ls -l
total 12
-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users   0 2007-07-31 01:55 01_Able

-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users 184 2007-07-31 01:57 03_Able.fxd

When I display the directory in Freevo, the files are listed in
chronological sequence, as expected:
Able 01
Able 02
Able 03

Next I renamed "02_Able" to "02_Alpha" and "02_Able.fxd" to
"02_Alpha.fxd". I also updated the contents of 02_Alpha.fxd so the
 tag now refers to the "02_Alpha" file, but left the
as "Able 02".

As shown below, the mtime for 02_Alpha remains unchanged since it was
renamed but not modified. The mtime for 02_Alpha.fxd has been updated
since it was modified as well as renamed.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Travel]$ ls -l

However, note that the ctime for both 02_Alpha and 02_Alpha.fxd have
been updated:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Travel]$ ls -lc
total 12
-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users   0 2007-07-31 01:55 01_Able
-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users 184 2007-07-31 01:55 01_Able.fxd

-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users 184 2007-07-31 01:57 03_Able.fxd

When I display the directory in Freevo, the renamed/updated "Able 02"
item (which is associated with 02_Alpha and 02_Alpha.fxd) is now listed
last since it's the newest item:
Able 01
Able 03
Able 02

I use touch to set the timestamp back to 01:56 for the two
renamed/updated files:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Travel]$ touch -t 200707310156 02_Alpha.fxd
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Travel]$ touch -t 200707310156 02_Alpha

The mtime for these two files now show 01:56:

-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users 184 2007-07-31 01:57 03_Able.fxd

However, the ctime for these two files is now 02:04 instead of the
previous 02:01, because that's when the touch command was used on these
files.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Travel]$ ls -lc
total 12
-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users   0 2007-07-31 01:55 01_Able

-rw-r--r-- 1 freevo users 184 2007-07-31 01:57 03_Able.fxd

When I display the directory in Freevo, it still shows "Able 02" as the
newest item:
Able 01
Able 03
Able 02

If Freevo sorts by mtime, shouldn't "Able 02" return to its original
position between "Able 01" and "Able 03"?

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

[Freevo-users] Filename sort of TV recordings

2007-07-30 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

There are times I've had to rename the avi and fxd files (and revise the
contents of the fxd so it points to the renamed avi) of certain
recordings due to errors in the TV guide or if I want to archive a
recording to a network drive that does not allow the colon character in
filenames (recordings made prior to availability of
TV_RECORDFILE_OKLETTERS).  Unfortunately, this updates the
date/timestamp of the renamed/updated files so it no longer displays in
the original recording date/time sequence in Freevo; instead, it shows
up at the bottom of list as if it were the newest recording. I've tried
using touch to set the date/timestamp back to the original value, but it
seems Freevo is using ctime instead of atime/mtime for date sorting.

As an alternative, I tried changing DIRECTORY_SORT_BY_DATE = 0 to sort
by filename instead of date. Since I use the default TV_RECORDFILE_MASK
= '%%m-%%d %%H:%%M %(progname)s - %(title)s', I figured this would allow
the programs to sort by record date/time sequence since mm-dd_HH_MM are
the high end of the filenames themselves. However, it appears Freevo is
using the in the fxd files for sorting and, since all
program episodes in a TV series have the same , the sort
order is a bit unpredictable. I've tried enabling and disabling
DIRECTORY_SMART_SORT, but the results are the same; namely, programs
are sorted by instead of filename. Am I missing some
other option or is the comment in local_conf.py incorrect when it says
setting DIRECTORY_SORT_BY_DATE = 0 means "No, always sort by filename"?
I'm running Freevo 1.6.3.

I wasn't ready to upgrade to 1.7.x yet, so I just added the patch
manually to my 1.6.3 setup and it worked like a charm! I especially
liked the ability to set this globally and at the directory level.

Thanks for your help!

[Freevo-users] Recordings of TV series have program titles truncated

2007-07-27 Thread Art S R
Hi all,

I've searched the archives but did not find any mention of the following
problem. I also looked in local_conf.py and freevo_config.py to see if
there might be something I could tweak there, but came up empty. I'm
running Freevo 1.6.3.

Under certain conditions, when all the recorded programs in a directory
have the same title (such as with a TV series), the names displayed in
Freevo are truncated and only the last word of the program title is
displayed. For example, "Samantha Brown Passport to Latin America"
displays as "America" for each of the recorded episodes. Here's what I
found:

1) The program titles are retrieved from the tag in the
fxd file that's created along with the avi recording.
2) If there are four or fewer recordings in the directory that have the
same program title in their respective fxd files, then the complete
title, as specified in , is displayed for all recordings
3) If there are more than four recordings that have the same title,
then only the last word in the title is displayed.
4) If the recordings have the same title, but the title is no more than
two words, then the truncation problem does not occur. For example,
"Globe Trekker" displays correctly even when there are more than four
programs with the same title. If the title consists of three or more
words, then only the last word is displayed.
5) If there is at least one other recording in the directory that has a
different title in its fxd file, then all recordings will display their
respective titles properly.
6) I tried varying the title in one of the fxd files to make it
slightly different so that it would allow the titles for the other
recordings to display properly. For example, I changed the title in one
fxd file to each of the following: "Samantha Brown_Passport...",
"Samantha BrownPassport...", "samantha brown Passport...", and
"SamanthaBrown Passport...". However, Freevo seems to ignore certain
characters, case and spacing when analyzing the titles, so these title
variations are still deemed to be identical and the problem still occurs.
7) I finally determined that if I pad a space at the beginning of the
title in one fxd file (" Samantha Brown Passport..."), Freevo treats it
as a unique title and thus allows all the programs to display their
complete titles. However, the title of the program with the modfied fxd
entry displays its title shifted over one space due to the leading blank.

I didn't notice this problem in the default recording directory since
there were a mix of program titles stored there. However, when I
organized my recordings into separate directories for each TV series,
that's when I ran this problem, since all the programs in a given
directory would have the same in their fxd files.

Does anyone have any ideas how to avoid/fix this problem? I know I can
manually alter a title (as noted in #7) or add a dummy fxd file to the
directory with a dummy or blank (which, unfortunately,
creates a dummy line entry when viewing the program list in Freevo), but
I'm looking for a cleaner solution.

Thank you.
