Sorry about the slow response on this one, I've only just had chance to check
MIXER_VOLUME_DEFAULT=
seems to control master, not PCM. PCM is still way too loud and distorts
everything.
I've tried creating a mixer profile and loading on boot but freevo overrides
this. this says to me that there is a setting in there somewhere which controls
the PCM volume.

Thanks for your help though, I'll try anything (almost)

I have freevo 1.70 running on Ubuntu. I can not get a DVD to play with
either mplayer, or xine thru freevo. Both apps work fine outside of
freevo. The problem is, when the DVD is inserted it lists all the
videoTS.vob files. I won't just play the dvd. Does anyone have any
idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks Dan M.

Hi,

I have managed to get freevo working very nicely now but I have a
problem. I have just configured a G400 to use directfb with sdl and
freevo v. 1.5.4 (on gentoo) While the output is excellent from mplayer
the menu (OSD) has quite a lot of flicker. I have tried using both PAL
and NTSC in directfbrc and they give the same problems.

Does anyone have any experience with this and a method to improve the
display??? Do i need to set a mode in fb.modes?

Please could somebody help me?

Many thanks to all,

All I can say is that I see the same behaviour and I _really_ hope
someone has the answer.

2005-10-20 Thread Brett Cohen
I could go and get it but I have a feeling the underlying problem is
ubuntu has python-2.4.

hi Ben,

You are indeed correct. The binary version of freevo in the
debian/ubuntu archives is indeed compiled against python version 2.3 and
ubuntu installs with 2.4.
It is however very easy to install from source. If memory serves there
where only two dependencies i needed to satisfy (mmpython and mplayer).
you can apt-get mplayer or use the GUI synaptic to install it. once this
is done, the fun starts - you need to get the freevo sources...

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/freevo/freevo-1.5.4.tar.gz?use_mirror=kent

which you untar into a temporary location.

tar -zxf freevo-1.5.4.tar.gz

you then get the mmpython sources

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mmpython/mmpython-0.4.9.tar.gz?use_mirror=kent

same thing

tar -zxf mmpython-0.4.9.tar.gz

The whole of freevo is written in python (which is a thing of great
beauty) which means compilation is quite simple (compared to complicated
make scripts). Python has it's own installer called distutils which is a
typically cunning implementation. Whenever you need to compile something
pythonic, go to the root directory of the sources and find the setup.py
file. Now you run this command

cd /root_to_mmpython
python setup.py install

this will compile the sources and confirm all dependencies and install
the apps/library (usually somewhere
under /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages). Once this is successful do the
same on the freevo sources and you should achieve happiness.

No need to replace Breezy.

HTH, let me know how it goes

Brett

2005-04-26 Thread Bart Coninckx
Hi,

in
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=10939564

it's already pointed out that it's near to impossible to keep freevo
from grabbing the mouse, so if you use a double desktop like I do (on
VGA and tv-out), you can't do anything else while running freevo. Very
annoying ...

I've done some experimenting with running a second X-server, but that
forces me to witch in between X-servers with CTRL-ALT-F7 and F8, which
is usesless as well

Would a be a solution to have a second video-card running? Or do a still
need to witch forth an back al the time?

Or has someone a solution meanwhile for the mouse locking thing?

Thx!

Bart

2004-08-26 Thread Gedeco
In my previuos posting, there was a error (tired, olympic games, wife
keeps bugging me), also on the wiki I had filled in.
All been solved by now, and correctly functioning.

Thnx

 FREQUENCY_TABLE but divided by 100.

First test.. then if it does not work, try : ':freq=%
 (int(frequency/100))s'
or maybe str() or maybe nothing..

 This is my working code

 # modif gedeco
 # ':channel=%(channel)s' +# Filled in by Freevo
':freq=%(frequency)s/1000' +

It should be divided by 1000, cause frequentietable has the ferquencies in
 Khz while mencoder needs Mhz

By any chance would you care to chuck your experience up on the wiki?
  I've
been meaning to for quite some time now? The wiki is very easy, it
 will
only take 5 minutes to do I am sure..

  Mick

Of course: whenever I sorted out this problem, I would glad to add my
 contributions.

 Thankyou in advance!

 Mick

I've update the WIKI with this content (Goes extremly slow??) So I
copy/pasted my update for backup purposes
= Use frequencies in mencoder instead of channels =

The channel list is a convention on which frequencies are allowed to be
 broadcasted in
 some countries.
Cable operators need more channels and have the possibilitie to use
frequencies which are not allowed for Antenna transmission. (Frequencies,
 used by
the military, is such a exemple).
So first you need to add the non-standard frequencies to you're
 local_conf.py file.
This is a illustrated example of my TV_CHANNELS settings

 {{{
 TV_CHANNELS = [
( 'bbcworld', 'BBC World', 'bbcworld' ),
 ( 'bbc1', 'BBC1', 'bbc1' ),
 ( 'bbc2', 'BBC2', 'bbc2' ),
 ...
 }}}

The last parameter of every item in the list will be mapped to a frequency

So this is a part of my FREQUENCY_TABLE
 The frequencies are in Khz

 {{{
 FREQUENCY_TABLE = {
  'bbcworld' : 294250,
  'bbc1': 266250,
  'bbc2': 273250,
  ...
 }}}

Check with you're local cable tv supplier (website?) to find out.

This would work correctly with Tvtime, but not with mencoder.
As you see in this example, it will try to pass a channel
parameter I have defined in freevo to mencoder

 {{{
 2004/07/28 22:40 CEST [*RecordServer*] popen
 /usr/bin/mencoder tv:// -tv
 driver=v4l2:input=0:norm=pal:channel=bbcworld...
 }}}

A channel setting mencoder doesn't understand.

Bassicly a tvtuner will tune in with a specific frequency and is not
aware of channels. Channel descriptions are different, regarding the
standard (pal, secam, ntsc) or the country you're living in. As I descibed
above, Cable operators don't have to follow these conventions, cause they
where designed with antenna broadcast in mind.

I've modified the VCR_CMD to use a frequency instead of channels.
The mencoder recording program supports the use of freq instead of
 channels.

 {{{
 # ':freq=%(frequency)s' +# Filled in by Freevo
':freq=%(frequency)s/1000' +
 }}}

The frequency in Khz defined in FREQUENCY_TABLE needs to be divided by
 1000, since mencoder uses
 the frequency in Mhz

Anybody toughts on how to resolve this?

The options you can pass to mplayer (or any record app by that matter) are
in tv/plugins/manual_record.py.

i think there is an option frequenzy passed, but you can check for all
options there. The variable is cl_options from memory.

Good luck, i expect this will work for you.

Yes, but search the file for cl_options to find the place in the code they

 Hi again,
sorry to be a bother, I'm feeling a bit stupid that I cant seem to get
sound on my tv recording, after studying the wiki and trying to follow
 it very carefully:

btaudio will just not work for me, the driver loads correctly but
mencoder crashes when I try to use it.

attempting the OSS / line in method, I plugged my patch cable in and=20
 tried:

 aumix -1 80 -1 R -i 1; mencoder -tv
 on:driver=3Dv4l:input=3D0:norm=3DNTSC:channel=3D5:width=3D320:height=3D2

-oac mp3lame -lameopts br=3D128:cbr:mode=3D3 -ovc lavc --ffourcc divx -o
 /home/mary/movies/recorded/fox.avi tv://

on the above command mencoder will record a video, and report that a
sound file has been created of X size, but the recording is silent!
 =

mplayer plays tv properly with audio thru the patch cable. the one
wrinkle in my setup is that I am trying to use the PCI sound card =
rather than the onboard VIA controller ... but should that matter? xmms
and mplayer use the PCI card just fine. maybe my aumix line needs a =
tweak to point it to the correct sound card some how? I'm just at a
loss, I don't want to give up on freevo yet but can't get used to
watching recorded shows without sound :(

 thanks in advance,
 Mary

2004-05-03 Thread Mary Strimel
Hi Mick,
Thanks for your suggestions, my results are below, and I will send a
plate of chocolate brownies to Mick or anyone who can tell me what I'm
(still) doing wrong! :)

 adevice=/dev/dsp

Is the the onboard or is this the other sound card?

I think /dev/dsp should be the correct one (PCI card), because if I run
aumix with no arguments, the pcm slider controls the volume of the PCI
card. but maybe I'm wrong about this ...

 ls -l /dev/dsp*

Gives me /dev/dsp, /dev/dsp1, /dev/dsp2, /dev/dsp3; [2 and 3 were
created by btaudio when I loaded it in my failed efforts earlier, so
shouldn't be relevant now that I'm doing the patch cable, right?].
The play around with aumix -D
 /dev/pickyours

Aumix reports the exact same info whether I use aumix -d /dev/dsp -q
or aumix -d /dev/dsp1 -q

according to aumix, mic is set to record at 100, igain at 100 or
whatever value I set. but, if I point mencoder to adevice=/dev/dsp1,
mencoder halts with unable to open /dev/dsp1: invalid argument this
audio format not recognized or supported error message.

To find which sound card your meant to be refferencing..

Thats about it.. Make sure 'capture' us unmuted and volume is turned
up..

How do I unmute capture? [P.S., when using mplayer through the sound
card, turning mic all the way up in aumix allows me to hear sound thru
patch cable, so I assume that means I should start my mencoder string
with aumix -m 100 -m R -i 1 but it still gives no sound in the
recorded file. I've experimented with different levels for igain and
using line rather than mic but that gives no sound either.]

I'm sure there is something simple going on, I'm just not getting it ...
thanks in advance for any suggestions!

attempting the OSS / line in method, I plugged my patch cable in and
 tried:

 aumix -1 80 -1 R -i 1; mencoder -tv
 on:driver=v4l:input=0:norm=NTSC:channel=5:width=320:height=240:adevice

mp3lame -lameopts br=128:cbr:mode=3 -ovc lavc --ffourcc divx -o
 /home/mary/movies/recorded/fox.avi tv://

on the above command mencoder will record a video, and report that a
sound file has been created of X size, but the recording is
silent! mplayer plays tv properly with audio thru the patch cable.

the one wrinkle in my setup is that I am trying to use the PCI sound
card rather than the onboard VIA controller ... but should that
matter? xmms and mplayer use the PCI card just fine. maybe my aumix

line needs a tweak to point it to the correct sound card some how?
I'm just at a loss, I don't want to give up on freevo yet but can't
get used to watching recorded shows without sound :(

 thanks in advance,
 Mary

Mary, maybe someone already mentioned this, or it might not be =
applicable. However, I also had a problem with no sound from tv, and
noticed after = a while that the sound channels where forced to zero. I
then used this = script in the beginning of my /usr/bin/freevo  script;

--
aumix -m+70
xmodmap /root/.xmodmaprc
xset s noblank
--

The two last lines are only for loading my own keymappings in X and to =
turn off screensaver. The first line sets the microphone line-in to 70%
= since I have to get tv-out sound into the sound card.

I recently reformatted my file server and loadedit with Linux. It was
previously running windows 2000. Now I am trying to decide what network
file sharing protocol to use.

What is the best network file sharing protocol for linux-linux transactions
which consist of approx. 1 gig size movies and mp3s?

Thanks,

Matthew

Nor for the list but ...
NFS would be my first choice and after, samba but it's more complicated,
i think, to use.

BTW, one mp3 of 1Go ... ;)

Ok the -encode fixed the gtk problem

Thanks a lot

freevo-runtime compilains about freetype-config
missing the first time I run it.

then after that freevo-runtime compilains about
undefined SDL referances.

Hi,
I nearly have the same problems. As I also have
USE=dxr3 it wants to
have
libfame, but it failes solving the dependency.

I installed freevo about 3 a while ago on my gentoo
system. and it seemed to work fine. I reinstalled my
system and now I get a lot of problems.

 when I run emerge freevo:

 freevo-runtime stops because it wants
freetype-config

 smpeg has sdl linking issues.

libdv whats gkt-config even though I disabled the
GTK
 use flag.
This is well known, set USE=-encode.

I use woundering if someone out there could give me
some pointer to getting freevo installed.

last time I used freevo, I though it was an excelant
product. and I can't wait to get it back up and
 running.

 Thanks
   Joe.

Hi,
played a bit around yesterday and could successfully compile everything when
using libsdl-1.2.4, though on my main machine it even works with
libsdl-1.2.5.

hard time. I tryed using the gatos driver with little
luck I could get the tv to display but not record (
with avview).

Thank you vary much. it is greatly appesheated.

What I'm really looking for is something that will
record programed show. then compress it when it is not
doing anything else. so I can watch then latter.

I've almost got it working

The AIW128 works (displays TV) under avView, I have
the EPG working,
but
when I select a channel mplayer shuts down with a 'no
data' error - so
I
suspect that however freevo uses the AIW128 to stream
to mplayer isn't
working correctly.

So I'm close !

Has anyone used the 3dfx voodoo 3500 (the one with the
Video and RF in, and VGA out of the board; and a
dongle with RCA/SVideo in and out) on a freevo system?
if so does it work well? I think i'm going to invest
in one seeing as it is a cheaper version of the ATI
All-in-Wonder cards, and the dongle will make for
better connectivity.
