Re: iBook screen flicker

2002-05-22 Thread Dan Lovejoy

Jeff- This seems consistent with a hardware failure in your something
something (I can't remember what it's called, but it provides power to
the screen.) The same thing happened to my ThinkPad from work with
turning down the screen brightness being the same workaround. I would
get it repaired before it goes out of warranty.

My 2001 iBook screen has started to flicker just a bit when it comes
out of sleep. If I lower the brightness 1 level it stops, but I don't
like to do that. It's under warranty for a few more months. Is this
something I should get fixed now? It's almost imperceptible, but it
worries me that it might get worse, that it's a bad omen. Is this a
known issue?

If its a case of I need to walk into a store and walk out with a
cable your only choices most likely are the chains, CompUSA,
BestBuy, Circuit City, possibly Staples, Office Max, etc. If you mean
I want to order one today so it'll be here in a few days try the
typical online discount places like newegg.com, buy.com, etc. Be
warned, if you're talking a brick and mortar store, you'll be paying
40+ for a Belkin brand cable. Personally, I've never paid more than
15 bucks for a cable including shipping.

My MacAlly card works fine on my WallStreet 266 with MacOS X. You don't need to

 Inquiring Minds Want to Know!

Those aren't scratches. That is grease from your fingers that the keys are
leaving on your screen when you close your book. You can use a lightly damp
clean soft cotton cloth and with a few minutes of gentle work they will come
off. So aside from religiously washing your hands every time you touch your
Mac there's not a lot that can be done. I take a piece of soft thin cloth
and cover my keyboard before I close my TiBooks. Works great, but you have
to remember which side is up and which is down or it will do little good.

It actually happens mostly not just when the screen is closed, but when there's
pressure on the unit. If I carry my powerbook around by its lonesome, I get no
marks but if I put it in my bag, where it bangs against me, and books inside put
pressure on it, I do get marks.

There's actually a company that makes a nice leather cover for the keyboard, but their
name eludes me at the moment I've been meaning to buy one for a while.

As many people said: drag mounted disk to trash.

Also, make sure you turn off File Sharing in the control strip or the
control panel when you're not using it -- running it needlessly takes up CPU
time RAM.

Finally, if an AppleShare server goes down unexpectedly just let the
computer realise it's gone time out (usually a minute or so).

PS Plugging the cable back in would've re-established the connection and the
two machines would've unfrozen again.

You might want to go to the apple support forums and tell the many
users that have posted about their scratches that they can easily
buff out marks. :-)

Seriously, most have tried.

I think it has something to do with the disintegrating screen rubber
stoppers etc and the tight tolerances.

Let's not get into the bad paint issue which is certainly real as well.

That's being caused by grit getting trapped in the grease deposits and

most of the newer laptops here, especially the really thin ones.

slight pain in the ass, but the alternative is a thicker, heavier
laptop, since to cure the problem you need to keep the screen away form
the keyboard, which would require space, and more material in the screen
side to stiffen it.

I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing companies offer screen
protectors like they use on Palm Pilots and Newtons..

I do two preventive maintenance procedures to keep this from happening, ever
since I bought my iBook.

1. I bought the leather screen protector from otherworldcomputing.com for
something like $13.00.

2. I use iKlear Apple Polish (not really a polish). I pay something like
$13.00 for a pack of 20 kits. I use one kit a week. (one came free with the
leather cover...which turned me on to this stuff)

My screen is spotless, and I do nothing out of the ordinary other than the
above, and I have had this iBook since November. Is the above the reason for
this? I don't know. I would like to think so, and it is a small price to pay
in my opinion.

They make two of these covers, one for the iBook and one for the TiBook (and
probably one for the big iBook now as well).

TiBook Combo Drive Source

2002-05-22 Thread Paul Nicholson

Does anyone know of a source for the combo DVD/CD-RW drive in the tiBook? Is it a
standard drive mechanism available form and OEM supplier?

Paul

Re: TiBook Screen Scratches

2002-05-22 Thread aron nelson

I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing companies offer screen
protectors like they use on Palm Pilots and Newtons..

I think at least two companies offer the protectors (clothes for
protecting the screens).

The weirdest thing is before I bought my TiBook, all I heard is how
good the units were. After I received it, then I mistakenly went on
the Apple forum site and man. I've never seen so many problems
with an Apple product!

I could choose between the Rev A and Rev B and too bad I didn't know
that the Rev B was MUCH FASTER for audio I guess it's all a trade
off, the Firewire and Graphics card is much faster for Rev B.

Thanks,

Aron

Re: Wallstreet 250 boot problem

When I restart my Wallstreet 250, I have to try 2-3 times to get it to
boot, but if I push the reset button and wait 5 minutes, then it boots
everytime. I also sometimes get an error message at start up saying that
the inbuilt memory failed a test and that I should see an Apple Technician.
I have reseated the memory chip, but it has no effect. In central India
Apple Techs are few and far between, has anyone seen this problem before?

Very common in Wallstreets. Your PMU and charge card are dying. Your laptop
will eventually just refuse to boot at all.
