Not only that, since the iBook keyboard extends to within 5mm of the left and right edge, there are also scuffs becoming visible on the plastic bezel surrounding the LCD screen. The matte finish of the bezel is becoming shiny where the edges of the keys make contact with it. The problem for me is getting into the habit of laying my protective screen saver over the keyboard prior to closing the lid. It spends 90% of the time laying on the desk where I forgot it. The WS is not designed (heat issues) to run with the lid closed and is mechanically designed not to boot if lid is closed, or to sleep if lid is closed when running with ext. monitor attached. Re: Torn TiBook screen
Hi all, Forgive me for not making myself clear-Apple DID replace the screen immediately under warranty. This is one time where I cannot fault their customer service. I was on the phone to them as soon as I opened my box. I was on hold less than three minutes, the service rep was helpful, and Airborne Express delivered a packing box by noon the next day. The TiBook came back to me with a beautiful new screen a week later. My only complaint is that there was a new scuff mark on the top case, but I can fix that myself with some touchup paint. I do wonder though how a factory-refurbished Powerbook could make it through even the most cursory inspection in that condition to be sold. JustinLee on 5/22/02 9:49 PM wrote: Does anyone know if there's a hack (shareware or freeware) that allows you to connect the new iBooks to an external monitor and run them with the lid closed? I'm not looking for an extended desktop, just something that would allow me to have it closed and use it with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse. I discovered that if I plug in an external monitor on my iBook (500MHz dual USB) and then connect my external USB hub to my iBook (which has a printer, Palm cradle and Apple Pro Keyboard connected) it would wake up from sleep and function like a desktop unit while the lid was closed. I think it was because the USB hub had an external power source which would provide power to the keyboard allowing it to signal the iBook to wake up. Interestingly, if I plugged in the USB hub and not the monitor, the iBook would wake, go through some brief activity, and then go back to sleep. I assume this was because it didn't sense the external video connection. I did all the above while keeping the screen closed. HOWEVER! After further research, I quickly learned that this is a practice that Apple says you should NOT do because it traps heat inside that would normally dissipate via the keyboard and palm rest. The heat buildup can cause not only damage to the internal components of the iBook, but possibly to the LCD screen as well (in the form of a blotchy display or even warping of the screen/bezel). I quit doing this as I didn't want to risk the premature death of my iBook. -makmac -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Click on the icon of the Application (which should be the 'W' for word X) and the select the word 2001 program, which is either already in the list or you can select by browsing to your folder tree by choosing 'other..' I'm pretty sure the trouble with that is when he's in OS X, he'll launch Classic and run Word 2001 which he doesn't want either. Seems to me one would need either an applescript (if that can tell which OS its running in) or a small program. Then that would be the program chosen to 'open' the word files and it would in turn launch the correct version of word and tell it to open the file. Seems like a pretty simple programming task, maybe someone will write it. Actually, the absolute simplest method would be to a) punt Office 2001, stop dilly-dallying and use OSX full time, or b) punt Office X if the only thing you ever do in X is java development. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... However, by default all my Word files have become associated with Office X. (I did not have Office X on my old computer.) If I double-click a Word document in OS 9 I get the message To use Microsoft Word your computer must be running MacOS X 10.1 or later. If I open Word first and then open the file from within it, it is fine. I don't boot into OS X very often, and when I do, it is mainly to work on Java programming and nothing else. Inevitably I make a note or throw away the sheet before it gets grimy...and it costs, well, nothing... um, what you see on the display is hand oils, nothing more. They wipe away simply. :-) -- ryan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: TiBook Screen Scratches
I agree -- rarely pick up and carry the 'book when it is not in the carrying case, but when I do, I do so with the TiHandle to avoid any torque or pressure on the case. Also use the leather piece over the keyboard and clean with iKlear Apple Polish. No marking or scratching thus far (over a year with ti 400), and I carry it with me every day. Don Jim Katz wrote: One big help for me in avoiding the grease marks on screen is the handle I put on. (Ti Book handle, or Tilt-n-tote pr spmething like that.) I never am tempted to pick the machine up squeezing the top, and there is no pressure walking with it. Recommended accessory, and I don't know why Apple hasn't picked it up. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
