Powerbook Firewire performance
I'm planning to buy a G4 Powerbook but I'm slightly concerned about the built-in Firewire speed. Tests I've seen show the throughput to be considerably slower than desktop Macs. I plan to use a large external Firewire drive for the media when video editing (Avid Xpress DV for Mac is out this month). Anybody out there using this setup with FCP? Any comments on performance? Rage Pro support in Mac OS 10.1.5
Support for 2D and QuickTime hardware acceleration for Rage Pro. Woohoo. Apple didn't abandon us after all. My Wallstreet 2 233MHz will soon fly with Mac OS X! RageLTPro (LR-C, 220) is a supported card now, right? Also iBook 1 users have a Rage Pro videocard. Can people who updated to 10.1.5 please respond with their experience with Rage Pro support? I believe the slideshow can show you, as it adds zooming and scrolling (panning) when 2D hardware support is found. You may also want to time some window closing and dragging before and after the update, write things down on paper as your wishful mind plays tricks on your memory. -- Dennis SCP [nl,en,(de)] Kuyichi Je sponsort nu TV reclames van je merkkleding, waarom geen merkkleding kopen waarbij jouw geld arbo verbetering in arme landen eist? Can I fax documents using Lombard internal modem?
I need to fax my resume, but don't have a fax machine. I use to fax things from my old desktop computer using a fax modem. Those items are gone now. Is there someway I can fax things with the internal modem of the Powerbook G3 Lombard? What software do I need? Any information would be appreciated. Mike __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: Powerbook Firewire performance
As long as you're not getting a first generation Ti you should be OK. BareFeats.com compared rev A vs rev B and noted great improvement in Firewire performance. http://www.barefeats.com/pb06.html He's right, this one bit me in the ass... The rev. A's have around half the performance of the ibooks, the rev b's onward are a smidge less than the ibooks- but all are less than deskstops. All it will basically do is limit your throughput using fast firewire drives (ie 7200rpm). They're still all fast enough for DVD capture, etc. Michael Bryan Bell -- ICQ: 16106263Yahoo: mhbell1 No Link for you! AIM: drunkenbatman -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The drive, it turns out, is surprisingly(?) loud. It spins down fine, but the hard drive needs to spin pretty continuously most of the time for what i'm doing (audio mosly). My refurbed wallstreet had that same drive in it, it started out OK, however within 3 months it got really noisy, and was driving me nuts. I recently swapped it out for a 20 gig IBM Travelstar, that drive is quite reasonable, let's hope it stays that way. Two dozen machines of various makes, installed on all not a single problem. I am wondering if the Apple download manager is causing the problems. Due to the fact i am on a 56k modem i do not download anything over 3 megs on the computer i usally download onto a zip at work since they are on a distric LAN Server (ie file that takes 15 mins on modem takes min at work). I usally download directly the apple OS updates and save the files (ie workin on three computers with OS X 10.1 + it is easier then downloading each one via the apple update. Plus if i have to reinstall i have the file and no wait to download and update. connecting cable modem
I just got cable internet installed todaywell I shouldn't say installed exactly, but there is a wire poking out of the wall! The installer had said I had to call tech support because they couldn't leave me a cd since I have a mac. I called tech support to see how to get online and they just said they would send a technician out. When I said I could probably do it myself if they would just give me a few tips, they said to type sas.r4.attbi.com in my brower url field and try to register online. As you may guess, I got an unable to connect window. Do I really have to have someone come to the house to get connected? Oh, by the way, this is ATT Broadband. Re: connecting cable modem
Kate: You should have numbers for a name server address to be input into the TCP/IP control panel in the area at the bottom where it says Name Server addr.. Make sure where it says Connect via that you have Ethernet selected as opposed to Apple GV/56. Where it says Configure you probably want to select DHCP. Also open the Appletalk control panel and make sure Ethernet is selected. Offhand, that's all I could tell you. Re: connecting cable modem
Kate, I just got online with ATT Broadband, and could not for the life of me, register through the cable modem. I got the unable to connect window also. I tried connecting on my rev A I-mac and Pismo with no luck. Tired the TCP/IP control panel along with Apple talk and other confgurations. I finally called a ATT tech out to my house to hook me up. He ended up using his PC laptop to get me up and running. So in summery, call a technician out to your house. Good luck, Vic I just got cable internet installed todaywell I shouldn't say installed exactly, but there is a wire poking out of the wall!
