Re: Pismo doesn't see FireWire QPS Que!

2002-07-25 Thread Sam Donaldson

That sounds good, the strange thing is that the drive does work, sometimes.
For example it worked last night for just one CD, then when I rebooted a bit
later on it wasn't there.
Maybe a loose connection inside the FW ports on the Pismo?
Anyone know how to check without breaking either the bank or the 'book?
Thanks,
Sam

There's a brand new (yesterday) Update that addresses CDRW drive
compatibility improvements; is it possible that one machine had it and the
 other didn't?

I regret ever buying .mac

2002-07-25 Thread Walter R Basil

Talk about some really bad support. Now the moderators are deleting posts
that are exposing their bad support in their forums..ha! Wow. Apple policy
there is that your question gets answered in 1 business day. Then a
moderator comes on and says it's 24 business hours. So I ask him if that
means that I can assume it will be 3 days (assuming 8 hour work days)
until I can receive an answer, or rather I should allow 3 days before
complaining that I have not received an answer. That post got deleted.

I can't believe the sub-quality support, and services there. People are
complaining everywhere, people are getting banned from posting for 30 days,
its like WW3 up in there! The funny thing is, the support is the whole
reason I bought the account instead of waiting for my trial period to end.
I wanted to go into tech support forums and find out some information.

People are asking how they can get a refund. I am totally shocked that
this is coming from Apple. I will probably cancel my account there myself,
and if they don't then I'll just post my name and password everywhere I
can think of, and never look back.
I let my mind wander and it didn't come back.

Here is a post from someone that puts it all in perspective:
--
What kind of company can bill you $49 (or $100) and not have a customer
care phone number or email. Where else do you get to spend $100 and not
get 'ANY' service.

This is a service industry and the first thing that matters in this kind
of business it to provide 'excellent' customer care.

I hav been totally unimpressed by the lack of moderator support and speed
of response from billing. The fact that you have no way to deal with Apple
directly about your purchase is disgraceful and insulting to say the least.
It is totally unacceptable to take money from people and offer zero
customer service.

I will use my iDisk space and some of the other features for the year I
have paid for. But based on current experience and the attitude of Apple I
will not be renewing my account next year.

.mac will be a big problem for Apple if they don't get it sorted out for
users. You can't run a business like this and expect it to succeed.

How would you feel if you could not contact you phone company if you had
billing or technical problems, other posting a message and hoping for a
reply. You would change companies for certain, well that's what a lot of
.mac users will do.

Apple need to understand the strong feeling most of the users on here seem
to have about the support and service provided - WE ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IT.

This is a 3rd rate service at the moment, and no amount of extra functions
are going to make up for that. Continued success of a SERVICE, requires
quality and customer care, both are not evident at .mac

For those of you like me who are not happy with .mac I suggest to make
sure people who are considering joining understand the limitiations and
issues we have painfully discovered.

They are :-

1. Inconsistent technical service, Web Mail down for hours, HomePage
problems, poor iDisk speed.

2. Little or no support on the .mac boards, just standard company waffle,
that skirts round the real issues.

3. No way of contacting Apple regarding the service.

4. No ability to officially complain.

5. No redress to cancel and get your money back.

6. Below par facilities, eg, can't change User Name, can't subscribe to
forum threads - these are run of the mill stuff for other providers, it's
not exactly leading edge at .mac is it.

As paying customers we should have a way to express our dissatifaction and
get direct replies from Apple. This needs to change ASAP.

At the school I go to (UW-Stevens Point) we don't have to get a computer
unless we want one. And even so, while they recommend PC, using a Mac on a

Slightly OT -- Testimony for AppleCare

2002-07-25 Thread MikkiWokk

I have a positive testimony for AppleCare that I would like to share among
the listas.

My son's iPod needed service -- the audio port was physically damaged and not
working properly. Monday, 7/22, I went to the area of Apple's website where
one can put in an order for service. The next morning, 7/23, before 8:30 AM,
an Airborne Express box had arrived at my door, with a return label for
sending it back, and even tape to reseal the box. I properly placed the iPod
in the box, sealed it, and called Airborne. They picked up the box at my door
by 6PM. Wednesday, 7/24: the box was due to arrive at Apple. This morning,
Thursday, 7/25, at 9:00 AM, doorbell rings. It's Airborne Express! I sign for
the package, open the box. Is there a repaired iPod in there? NO. Did they
deem the problem not covered by warranty and return it unfixed? NO. What was
in the box was a BRAND-NEW, PRISTINE, NEVER-USED IPOD!!! Matter completely
taken care of within a 61-hour period! That's quite impressive to me!!!

Uhh, the same way they get your current G3 to operate at 400

No, your system will not be as fast as a G4/500 running on a higher

Yes the system bus will be a bottleneck; it is in pretty much all

processor speed far outstrips the fastest bus speed these days.

Airport Help

2002-07-25 Thread richard.lowrey

Hello, I recently purchased a store model ibook/500 and am attempting to
install airport...

The airport software kept submitting a network listing of Dot-F for which
I have no password and it would not allow me to add another network.

I did a software restore wiping my hard drive and after reinstalling the
software...the Dot-F network is still there.

As my Airport PCMCIA card is used, I thought perhaps it is retaining some
residual software on the card.

It is probably my ignorance both with airport and Mac since I have recently
converted to the Mac format.

So I humbly ask your help.

Richard

Yes, that's right! What happens if you show up with the Mac? I can't imagine
you'd be thrown out of school. What could they do?

You certainly can run the software in VPC, but there is no option on the PC
laptop, as they charge you for it in your tuition fee and you get one, like
it or not. You don't get it, they get it for you!

Sorry, they want it back after two years!

Wow! that's exorbitant! $4,000 for a _rental_.

I'd say that withdrawal is something to consider.
This is not about computers. It's about draconian
educational and business practices.

What if your employer said that not only must you
have a car, but that it must be a Ford (or whatever).
Even Ford or GM don't do that, I think.

This is a university? I'd further suggest they have
their charter revoked for this kind of thinking.

Next thing you know, they're going to ban college
students from eating french fries... oops! they're
already trying that.

You can use airport with a PC even. The administrator app you use to set

I used to use a SaddleBag with my Blueberry rev.a iBook. And I can tell

across the Pacific as well as across the continent (SFO to JFK).

I have replaced the Blueberry with a 14 600 iBook and got a Timbuk2

Further, any recommendations for other (graphite-accommodating) carrying
cases that can serve as both backpack and briefcase?

 Thanks.
