More wireless questions

2002-11-07 Thread Vic Viet Duong
Greetings everyone,

I have several more questions about the whole 802.11b thing:

1-Can someone explain why the D-link Wi-Fi D-614+ router is claiming 22mbs?
Can any macs reach this speed with the current airport card?

2- Is there any way to secure my wireless router? (keeping other people from
surfing on my line?) Are there software that allows me to track activity on
my router?

3- What are the latest predictions on when Apple will jump on the 802.11a
bandwagon? (54mps?)

Thanks!

Re: Gold star for Apple

2002-11-07 Thread John Wolfgang
That is a remarkable story, especially in light of my recent repair
experience with apple. Sent my wife's TiBook 550 in (via the local Apple
Store) for repairs to the CDRW and mainboard. In short, between myself and
the folks at the Apple store, this machine was sent in THREE times before
Apple was able to repair the unit. We were without the machine for two weeks
(which for a devoted Mac User, can be an eternity).

We sent the machine in to Apple (and paid the premium repair price) so that
we could be sure it was done correctly and quickly -- the "peace of mind"
factor. Hm...

Apple did apologize and gave us a 128 MB SODIMM bank. A retail value of
something like $20.

Just wanted to put in my $0.02 before the Apple love fest gets out of hand
:)

Strange Wallstreet Noise

2002-11-07 Thread Ben Woodard
Wallstreet PDQ with 320 ram OS X 1.5

I was typing on the WS when it let out a high pitch
noise ( I thought of 2001, A Space Odyssey) that
lasted as long as it took me to save and shut down.
Restarted and no problems. Several days ago heard a
noise like something was shorting out. It appears
something is about to blow. Only recent change was the
addition of a USB PC Card. I have had problems with
the left bay occasionally not making good contact with
the battery where if I bump the computer while it is
running on battery, it will shut down. Taking the
battery out and putting it back in allows it to
restart.

Other than aliens trying to contact me, has anybody
got any ideas?

I'm on digest so my responses may be slow.

Thanks
Ben

well no, the Wallstreet has open firmware. Open Firmware is on all
Macs with G3's or better, and even some 604 machines (9600, i think,
had Open Firmware).

The Startup Manager is just an Open Firmware application. It requires
OS 9 or better, a machine with an AGP graphics chipset, and (if
applicable) any relevant firmware updates.

Re: Jaguar reluctant to go back...

2002-11-07 Thread Heok Hee Ng
Hi Jim,

Tried what you suggested, but still no go. What happened was
exactly as you described. I got a happy mac, followed by an instant reboot
into Jaguar. Looks like putting OS 9.2.2 on the second partition (instead
of the first with Jaguar) may have something to do with it, as someone else
suggested. Oh well, I'll consider this a lesson learned (just a minor
inconvenience anyway) and will be putting Jaguar on a separate hard drive
(instead of on just a separate partition of my primary drive) on my beige
DT.
Thanks for the advice anyway.

Dear Jeff & Heok,

I, too, have experienced this problem, usually after an OS 9 or classic
crash. Typically I will set my Pismo to startup on OS 9, but when
booting, shortly after the first "happy mac" it will RE-boot, and start
up in X. This began happening after installing 10.1, and continues in
10.2. The only solution for me was to do the following, in sequence:
(1) In X, open the "startup disk" panel of system preferences, and
choose the OS9 volume; (2) open the "classic" panel of system
preferences, and click the "advanced" tab; (3) click "rebuild desktop"
and wait while it rebuilds the desktop on the chosen startup disk; (4)
close the "system preferences" app and restart the Mac.On at least
one occasion, after booting up 9 in this way, OS 9 proceeded to rebuild
the desktops again! But all worked fine... until the next time when I
needed to repeat this rigamarole all over again. This procedure is
what you have to do when you discover that holding down "option" during
startup doesn't give you the choice of booting from your OS 9 disk.

I've got a Pismo/500, and when I first installed 10.2 I got the same
behavior where the battery indicator said "Calculating...".

However, a few weeks ago it stopped, and now when the battery is fully
charged the indicator just says "100%".

Maybe discharging/recharging your battery might do something good.
That's pretty much all I've done.

What exactly do you mean by "via Appletalk"? Jaguar handles Appletalk
on your Wallstreet ethernet port just fine. If you mean using the
localtalk (aka printer/modem port) on your wallstreet, then probably
it does not work in Jaguar. But an ethernet cable is quite
inexpensive and ethernet transfers are way faster than localtalk, so
that would be the way to go. I am pretty sure the 7500 has an
ethernet port (correct me if I'm wrong).

In summary, you can perfectly well network your Wallstreet running
Jaguar to the 7500 running 9.1, no need to use 9.2.2 for that.

In the Finder, click Go->Connect to server and your 7500 should be there.

Now going back to why you have trouble booting 9.2.2, that may have
to do with the 8 GB problem. It is widely known that OS X in a
Wallstreet must start from a partition totally within the first 8GB
of the hard disk; though you're trying to use 9.2.2, you're selecting
that startup partition from within X. I'm not sure if that's it, but
I would try installing 9.x in the first partition and see if it
matters.

On my Wallstreet there is also a strange beahavior that may be
related to yours. I have two partitions that each contain a 9.1
system folder, but each time I select one of them as the startup from
within Jaguar, the mac starts up from the *other* (nonselected) 9.1
partition. Weird.

Re: Downgrade from 9.2 - 9.1

2002-11-07 Thread Jon Glass

> What is the best way to Downgrade from 9.2 - 9.1?

I'll tell you what I did, and I never had any problems.

I found my system disk that came with my Pismo. On the CD is a disk image of
my hard drive as it shipped from the factory. On that disk image is the
system folder.

I simply took my 9.2 folder, removed its finder, renamed it "System Folder
9.2", and then copied over the pristine System folder from the CD's disk
image.

Once the OS 9.0.4 System folder was on my hard drive, I pulled out a CD I
have that has the 9.1 update on it, and I ran the intaller. Once I was back
to 9.1, I went to my 9.2 folder, and dragged out the preferences folder, and
all the third-party stuff I wanted and needed.

I did that by doing a careful comparison of the two system folders, nested
folder by folder, comparing what was in each. I also used labels to label
everything I wanted to keep, and then I _copied_ (not moved) each item I
wanted back in 9.1 to the new system folder. I copied by holding down the
option key while dragging the icons.

When I was done, I rebooted with the "new" older system, and it worked fine.
I ran like this for several months, and never had any real problems. When
9.2.2 came along, I went to that, and haven't looked back. I had a problem
with an AppleScript Addition, but that was my only problem with 9.2. (which
I only found out later...)

In my mind, that is the simplest way to do it, so saying you have that disk
image. If you don't then you can do a "clean install" which will leave your
current System folder intact.
