Problem with disappearing AppleWorks in 9.0.4
My daughter called last night with a problem which is *very* puzzling to me. She is using her iBook (the earlier clamshell model, I think 300 MHz, indigo), and her AppleWorks (6.0.x) had locked up on her and she shut down the iBook (ouch!). After she started it back up, the AppleWorks folder was there, but nothing in it! Over the course of an hour phone call, I walked her through finding the Install disk and re-installed the AppleWorks on her drive. When she started up AppleWorks, she got an error message about it not being able to open some spreadsheet file (she had only double-clicked on AppleWorks, not on any file), but then there was some spreadsheet file there. When she exited from AWks and looked in the AWks folder, all the stuff was gone!! I had her then (and had earlier in the phone call) do a Sherlock search for AppleWorks - the first time, there was Appleworks, but it was greyed out (like when you've done a search, and before quitting Sherlock have deleted the file). I asked my daughter if anyone else has been using her iBook, but she didn't know of anyone except for her fiance. Asked if the landlord had had anyone over working in the house on anything (nope), if one of her roommates had had friends over (nope) or had a party (nope). My daughter has Virex installed and running, so this whole thing is getting puzzling to me. My situation is different from hers, as I've upgraded my AppleWorks (to 6.1.2) and OS (to 9.2.2), so I cannot rule out possible problems between AW 6.0.x and MacOS 9.0.4. Has anyone experience or seen this kind of total disappearance of the AppleWorks folder's contents? I almost wonder if I need to take my Diskwarrior and Norton CDROMs and drive the 4 hours down there to run tests on her drive (but that seems like such a long drive). Any and all help will definitely be appreciated by this dad. wallstreet cooling fan
Lately I've noticed that my trusty Wallstreet II (PDQ, I guess) has been running much warmer. I've also noticed that my cooling fan doesn't seem to kick on anymore--ever, no matter how hot it gets. Unless you use it on some surface that would prevent air from circulating underneath, you won't hear the fan. However, if you really want to hear it, you can shutdown your PDQ and reset the power manager. Powerbook G3
We are having a problem with my daughters Powerbook G3. Purchased new on 6-25-99 Her computer runs extremely slow, Office 98 and all that goes with that software. Sometmes it takes literaly 10 to 15 minutes to print a simple 1 page letter from Word 98. We have defraged the hardrive, rebuilt the desk top, and installed a total of 192 MB RAM. She uses an HP 935c printer that was new. We have tried reinstalling the software, but still is really slow. According to the lowendmac site we can install up to 384 MN RAM, when we had the ram installed for us we were told it was maxed at 192. So this is why I wonder about what machine we really have. Would appreciate some simple help here. I understand that their is a number of models of this computer. Here are the numbers on what we ordered from Apple. Virtual RAM problem in Pismo under Jaguar
Dear listers, I've got a Powerbook 2000 firewire (Pismo), with a gigabyte of RAM. I bought this vast quantity of memory because I use a graphics program to render huge image files, and cannot tolerate the several-hour delays imposed by using virtual memory. Everything works delightfully when booted up in OS 9.2.2. I cannot currently afford to upgrade my graphics application to X, so must either run in OS 9 or in classic under Jaguar. Before Jaguar, I was unable to launch this program in classic because pre-Jaguar versions of X would not allocate more than 200 MB of memory to classic applications. Jaguar, however, seemingly allows my classic application to claim 800 MB. Unfortunately, when I start rendering under classic, things slow down to a snails pace, suggesting to me that Jaguar is in fact using some sort of virtual RAM scheme. How do I turn this off? I would rather not keep having to re-boot in OS 9! I realize this is more of an OS X question, but maybe some of you know the answer. Re: Powerbook G3
I don't use Office but my wife does at work and she says its slow. I have that same printer and it only slows way down when you print a photo at the best setting. For normal documents it is pretty spiffy, much faster than my newer photosmart 1115. I've used it with my Wallstreet II (266mhz/192mb) and it worked fine, spitting out almost 8 pages of double spaced text in a minute. Have you updated the drivers? The latest versions are available for download at hp.com. Does it print just as slow when printing from other programs? If you're running OS9 or earlier increase the memory allocated to Office 98. Turn off virtual memory if you are using it, especially if her hard drive is full, that may make a difference. Re: Powerbook G3
Bob, Yes, only the Lombard model has a 333MHz processor. I'd suggest you run Apple System Profiler and check that the cache memory is being recognized. A number of Lombard owners have had problems with cache failures, which would cause slowdowns. I think it's more likely your HD is almost full? If you have virtual memory enabled in the Memory control panel (it's on by default in OS9), and you have little free HD space remaining (less than, say, 300MB), you could be running into a problem with the HD being overtaxed due to swapping memory contents back and forth - this is especially noticeable when using MS Word, in my experience. If this is the case, do some HD pruning, and try again. If you have plenty of HD space, then try increasing the memory allotment for MS Word ('Get Info' on the Word application icon, and increase the memory allocations). Again, this assumes OS9 operation, which it sounds like you're using. As to the max RAM that can be installed on these machines, I have run my Lombard with a maximum of 512MB RAM for months now, will no problems (256MB in both upper and lower slots). As chip densities improve, many machines can run with larger total memory allotments than originally envisioned by the manufacturer. I do believe, though that 512MB is the maximum memory amount that these machines can address. HTH.
