Dual batteries and OS X, Processor upgrades
I have a few questions about PBG3 Wallstreets. Before I buy a second battery, I had a few questions: 1a) Will OS X recognize both batteries (if you have one in each bay)? 1b) If it does, does it treat it as one large battery, or does it give you two battery indicators? Also, I want to upgrade the processor. But I don't have $300-$400 to spend on a 500 MHz G3 or G4. I've looked on eBay, but that didn't help much. I was thinking of getting a 266 or 300 MHz used proc at $120 and $195 respectively. Would the speed increase be significant? I have a G3 233 w/cache now, and I use OS X 10.2. Re: Dual batteries and OS X, Processor upgrades
1a) Will OS X recognize both batteries (if you have one in each bay)? Yes 1b) If it does, does it treat it as one large battery, or does it give you two battery indicators? I have had two batteries for some time now, but have never had the need to use both under OS X. When I use both of them, the indicator shows up as one combined battery. I was thinking of getting a 266 or 300 MHz used proc at $120 and $195 respectively. Would the speed increase be significant? I have a G3 233 w/cache now, and I use OS X 10.2. I upgraded the processor on my Wallstreet from 233 to 300 MHz, and noticed a significant speed increase. I would skip the 266MHz upgrade (tried that also, and the speed increase wasn't significant) and go straight for 300 MHz. If you are patient, you might get lucky and get a 300MHz processor for less than half your quoted price (like I did). Heok Hee -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... trouble with Remote Access on Pismo/9.1
Hi folks, I am having a weird problem with Remote Access on my Pismo 400 running 9.1. I can't open the Remote Access control panel because it says Open Tpt Remote Access extension could not be found in my extensions folder. I do have the mentioned extension installed and turned on, and I have tried various versions of that and all the other related extensions I can think of. I've tried replacing the control panel, the Remote Access preferences, the Shared Library Manager, etc. If I start from a backup of my iMac's 9.1 system folder on a different partition, the Remote Access comes up fine. But I have tried replacing the extensions and preferences in my main partition with the extensions and preferences from that backup and Remote Access still does not work. I have the original cd and can if I have to reinstall everything, upgrade again to 9.1, etc. but before I do that, does anyone have a clue what could be causing this? Re: trouble with Remote Access on Pismo/9.1
Instead of replacing the extension and the preferences file, try deleting the preferences file and delete the finder preferences also. I used to have my finder preferences get corrupted from time to time and it caused lots of odd problems. good luck. -Hal On Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at 09:48 AM, Beverly Woods wrote: Hi folks, I am having a weird problem with Remote Access on my Pismo 400 running 9.1. Wireless printing problem ...
Hi: Hoping someone has been down this route ... I have the following hardware setup ... Titanium 667 Powerbook running OS 10.2.3 Asante FriendlyNET AeroLAN PDMCIA Card - AL1011 Asante FriendlyNET Wireless Rounter - FR3202AL-1PCM I can printer when hooked up via ethernet to an Apple Laser Select 360, but when I try wireless it won't go through. The error messages I get are that printer isn't responding or that appletalk isn't active. I've worked with both Apple and Asante in the past and they did a pretty good job of pointing the finger at each other. However, after waiting several months I called Apple back and a rep. was very friendly and helpful in troubleshooting what might be going on. After going through a number of troubleshooting procedures we believe we are on to something. He thinks that these two ports aren't open (or at least one of them isn't open). Port# 548 and port# 427. He thinks that the Appletalk signal is being sent out to the printer, but the powerbook isn't being replied to by the printer because of a blocked port. Has anybody went through the process of unblocking a port or at least checking to see if one or the other is closed? Although I was real comfortable with tinkering around OS 9, some of the OS X stuff has me at a loss ... would appreciate assistance from anyone familiar with this. Happy Holidays! Assorted recent problems with Pismo 9.2.2
Within the past week (or let's say up to two if I ignored it at first), I've started getting some problems with my Pismo (384MB RAM, orig. 10 GB HD, MacOS 9.2.2): 1) When trying to drag and drop (expand) folders/files from the Stuffit Deluxe (6.0.1) window to my drive, some (now most) appear to complete, but when I get the info, the file (or some, if I've dragged a folder) is incomplete - shows for example 127MB but the bytes shows 43,243 bytes (different amounts, but about always smaller. HOWEVER, if I drag the file to my RAM disk (about 32 MB, which I originally set up to speed up my browser cache), the file expands properly. If I then drag the file from the RAM Disk to the Pismo's HD window (or subwindow), the file copies okay and I have a working, expanded copy. So why is this happening? Only thing recently with Stuffit programs that I did was to DL and switch to Expander 7.0.1 (and the DropStuff version with it appears to work fine the other way). I can't afford the cost of an upgrade on the Stuffit Deluxe yet (out of work and job-hunting), so let's check other options. Thanks on that! --- 2) Just today, all of a sudden when I click on an IAD's (those Internet locations/URLs that you get when you drag an address like http://www.apple.com to the desktop), I get this message: The Internet location www.apple.com cannot be opened because there is no application selected for opening this kind of location. Use the Internet control panel to select a helper application for opening this kind of location. Also, Command-clicking on an URL within Emailer no longer launches iCab (browser) as it used to do for the past few years. I looked in Internet CP and it lists iCab to open http and https files - as before. I went in and changed the preferences in Internet CP, re-installed a fresh download of iCab, but I'm still NOT getting results when I double-click on the INet location(IAD) in the Finder (or when I Command-click within other applications - Emailer, BBEdit Lite, no go!). Anyone else run into either of these problems and can help? All help will be appreciated. PowerBook G3 Series (Lombard) 333MHz and 400MHz, The Wallstreet had all legacy ports, the Lombard had SCSI but also had USB, the Pismo had FireWire and USB with no legacy ports. All iBooks have USB. The 2400 and 3400 can take USB PC Cards as can the Wallstreet. I believe all USB PC Cards are Cardbus cards and therefore do not work in the 1400 and earlier. I could be wrong but its something to look into. You could get a PowerPC PCI based desktop for $100 or less and add a $20 USB card ... might be cheaper, I can't imagine that if he is doing his work on a 6100 and a 540c that he really needs hardcore computing. I could be wrong but its something to look into. That is incorrect, kinda. The Wallstreet was the first Apple laptop to have Cardbus compliant PC card slots. Earlier ones (like the Kanga/3500, the 3400, and the 2400) had regular 16-bit PC card slots. However, those models can get a $100 upgrade from MCE to get fully cardbus-compliant slots. Not worth it if you ask me, I say save your $100 and sell the older laptop and you'll have almost enough for a Wallstreet right there. Some people have hacked the 3400 to allow cardbus compliance without sending it to MCE, but it causes some bugs and it only works with certain brands of USB cards with certain devices. If you want reliable USB that complies with everything, get a Lombard or later. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
