I would definitely go with the G3/900 unless you have a specific need for
the AltiVec unit of the G4. From what I understand, MHz for MHz, the G4 is
about the same speed as the G3 processor, except for AltiVec operations.

Unless you use a ton of AltiVec-accelerated software, the G3/900 would be a
much better option and value.

Pismo reassembled

2003-08-26 Thread Jochen Busch
Well,

Operation Pismo Soundcard soldering was solved perfectly

The PB boings, it starts, it sleeps, everything is just doing fine,
except:
it´s blind...
the LCD stays black and an external monitor stays black too..
..rr..
 Maybe I should wait for some hours or so ??
Cause the first starts even the sound didn´t work..leaving me in fear
about the soldering results..
then after a few minutes with the Pram battery (was disconnected for
10 days) and powerline connected
 one by one the pismo´s features came back to life..
except: the display
ompf
If I didn´t kill the soundcard by soldering it,
I guess I also didn´t kill the graphics card ;)
So where to look for the malfunction ??
the LCD cable connector is connected.
and even if it was not connected:
why does the external monitor refuse to work ?
Should I disassemble the LCD again
or should I look for some malfunction more central ??
greetings Jochen

Re: Update Netscape for Pismo?

2003-08-26 Thread Les Riess
To: Michelle Klein-Hass

>>It is definitely sufficient for Netscape 7. I would strongly suggest
going the
Mozilla route because Moz is a bit leaner and faster than the
AOL-packaged
Netscape.<<

I'm not using the AOL-packaged Netscape. I use Netscape 7 on my G4
desktop at my studio and like it a lot. At this point, I'm only
interested in upgrading my Pismo that I use at home to Netscape 7. BTW,
thanks for the link to the LEM Pismo page.

To: Hugo Diaz

>>Now I want to migrate the Netscape mail and bookmarks to the 1400.
What files should I copy to the 1400?<<

I'm not the best person to ask as I'm more technophobe than technophile,
but I think that all you have to do is link your two computers together
and then use the import feature in Netscape to bring your address book
and bookmarks over to the PB 1400. If you have further questions, I'm
sure someone, who is more expert, will be able to help you.

To:Steve Kidd

>>One question and one comment, The question is what software are you
using that hasn't been updated? I ask mainly just out of interest - I
keep track of photo software (professional hazard) and I wasn't aware
of any major tools that weren't OS X compatible by now.<<

I use a photo business package called HindSight which runs on the
Panorama database software. It runs in classic on my G4. Also, the
scanner driver software for my Nikon SuperCool Scan 2000 will only work
in OS 9.

To: Everyone

Thanks for your comments, especially the ones that dealt specifically
with upgrading Netscape on my Pismo. I'll probably be following up with
questions on upgrading to OSX in the near future, as some of you have
given me food for thought.

Re: Any tips on where to buy a pismo

2003-08-26 Thread Wayne
Check out Macprices.com, they have a free classified section for people to
sell their Macs and Pismos are listed on there.

Also, there are very good deals on the discontinued Ibooks 700 Mhz models,
all of them are new factory sealed units and SmallDogs.com and Powermax.com
have a shipment priced under $800 (I purchased one through Powermax and am
very happy with the system).

Check Dealmac.com also, they keeps tabs of refurbished as well as new sales
offers.

I bought mine almost two years ago from megamacs.com. I've done business with them for
years, and the machine has been perfect. I just checked their site and they have a few
machines... The best seems to be one for $799:

* Apple Powerbook G3 400MHZ
* 14" LCD Screen
* 320MB of RAM
* 6GB Hard Drive
* Removable DVD-Rom Drive
* Airport Card Installed
* Yo-Yo Style AC Adapter Included
* LIon Battery included

Check around Powermax and even Smalldog.

Re: Clamshell iBook

2003-08-26 Thread Kyle Lee
Ken,

Even if this iBook had a bad motherboard, you got a steal. Either way,
sounds like the Ion battery (Apple M7426 Li-Ion Battery Clamshell
iBook) is dead. You can find them used on eBay for about $70+. These
will hold about a 5 hour charge. I am using one now that I bought on
eBay. New ones will cost about $140.

The iBook does not have a PRAM battery. I have taken so many of these
apart. It is not that difficult. I can send you the PDF files that
illustrate how to do it.

Let me know if you want them.

It's likely the battery contacts opening up, they have possibly lost

The problem with so many of these batteries--unless you buy them from
someone like bti--is that they have been on the shelf and die. I bought
two from overstock.com and they were d.o.a. i was able to bring them
back to life with a vst charger... others have not been able to do that
successfully with some of these.

This iBook does not have a PRAM battery. I think it uses a capacitor
that's good for a very short times--the time to unscrew the battery and
replace it--if you're lucky. The big battery is the only battery in it.
If the main battery is dead, you need to run it with the adapter and get

Are you saying you got a Blueberry iBook for $20? The battery is dead. I
don't know the iBook very well but since almost every Apple laptop had had a
backup or PRAM battery, I would think that this iBook had one too. It's
probably a rechargeable one and since the main battery is dead, the backup
battery is dead too. You might be able to get it back to work by keeping the
iBook plugged in for 24 to 48 hours. It might need a fully charged main
battery to do so, though...

Grab the small icon to the left of the link in the address bar and drag
it into an e-mail. Or highlight it and go to Safari/Services/Mail/Send
Selection and OS X will create a new e-mail document for you with the
link as the message body. Or you can cut and paste it into an e-mail.
Services are system wide and available to all Cocoa applications, drag

Clamshell iBook

2003-08-26 Thread Ken
Picked up a Blueberry clamshell with yo-yo today (for $20 it seemed like
worth a chance).

When I got it home I got it to boot by jiggling the power connector. It
looks like the power connector might be loose on whatever board it is

While it boots fine to OS 8.6, it does not charge the battery and when
the power connector is disconnected, the time reverts to 1904. Do these
things have a PRAM battery?

Does anyone have any experience taking these things apart? From my

but for $20 it may be worth the risk and learning experience!

The site from which I normally get manuals is down until tomorrow, and I

Any help appreciated!
