There is no reason for that. Please do not rename a thread whenever you

Actually I doubt this will work with any model later than the
WallStreet, as beginning with the Lombard it became impossible to
boot from a hard disk connected to the PC Card slot -- where earlier
models boot from the PC Card slot if a good System Folder is found
there and chosen, just as if booting from an external SCSI drive. I
noticed this change right away, since I had long relied on HDs
connected via PC Card (in the 190/5300, 1400 and 3400/G3) to do
software maintenance and repair -- far more convenient than using a
SCSI drive. The Lombard you can start from an external SCSI drive,
the Pismo and later from FireWire, but not via PCMCIA. (The
WallStreet, oddly, will always boot from any System Folder found
anywhere but the internal HD -- CD, SCSI, PCMCIA -- whether chosen in
Startup Device or not -- an intended feature? Annoying, sometimes.)

I have an IceBook 500 that probably needs to be repaired at a cost of

Well, it is a backlighting problem. It boots up and one can see it on
an external monitor, but the LCD panel's backlighting is not working.
I have put larger HD's in TiBooks (not fun, BTW), however, am not sure
on this one. Apple wants $300 minimum to do the honors and I am on the
fence whether I will be throwing good money after bad (longevity of the
machine) ... however have thought about using it as a test case for YDL

Request advice for ex FW/USB DVD/CD burner

2003-12-12 Thread Brent Baeslack
Listers, best of the holidays to you!
Requesting your help and advice about what kind of external DVD
burner to ask Santa for.
Here is my set-up: G3 Pismo 512 MB OS 10.2.8 10 GB and G4
Quicksilver 640 MB OS 10.2.8 120 MB Combo drive
I would like to be able to do portable DVD/CD burning for data backup
and archiving purposes. I would like to avoid hacking/patching files
and have iTunes, etc. see and work with this external DVD/CD burner.
I was also hoping that it might play well (FW and USB 2) with the
darkside in case my PC friends ask me to backup their hard drives.
Thanks for you thoughts.

Well, I can't remember which is which (Lombard or Pismo) but the part
numbers for the display for the G3(Bronze keyboard) and the G3(Firewire)
are all different. The only things I can find in common seem to be the

a stack of index cards to support the plug from the yo-yo.

So it must be the yo-yo, eh?
Maybe not. The power supply connection comes loose from the circuit
board on Wallstreets and may need to be resoldered. It happened to me.
Just resolder the connector.

If the YoYo plug is intermittant, you can probably make it act up by
wiggling the cable where it connects to the plug ot the YoYo. If it's
the WallStreet connection then wiggling the plug relative to the
Wallstreet should show it. Try not to wiggle one while you are wiggling
the other.

Anyone have any thoughts besides a new yo-yo? And are there any
alternatives, since I hear horror stories about them?
If your YoYo's bad just start hacking at it to find the problem. If
you have a bad DC cable connection at the YoYo end, split open the
YoYo, strip the wire and re-solder it. Slap on a bit of silicone rubber
for a strain relief. Glue the YoYo back together with super glue. It's
not pristine, but you've got a power supply out of what would have been
landfill food.

If it's the plug on the end of the DC cable, shave the plastic molding
down with a knife and resolder the wires. Slap it back together with
heatshrink tubing and silicone rubber.

 -Laurent.

I've done it with a 400MHz Lombard to a 400MHz Pismo--using the whole lid.

I had to use the inverter (the long skinny PC board that lies between the
hinges) from the Pismo as the Lombard's had one less (or was it one more)
pin where it plugged into the mother board. Everything else was the same.

Two problems: It won't go to sleep when you close the lid (I have to do it
manually) BUT it DOES wake up when you open the lid.

And the mic doesn't work. I've not investigated either thoroughly.

Not unless you change the flat cable with it. The LCD's have their flat
connector in a little different spot. The easiest way is to change the
entire housing, especially if you don't use AirPort.

Sounds like a Wallstreet model. What exactly did you do when you tried
to install Mac OS 9, and what error messages did you get?

Anyone have any thoughts besides a new yo-yo? And are there any

As always, thanks for all thoughts on the matter,
Check out:

Their prices are quite good. I have one of their auto adapters for
my Wallstreet and it has worked well.

 Just resolder the connector.

I thought the power supply came through the sound board- which I just
replaced.

If the YoYo plug is intermittant, you can probably make it act up by
wiggling the cable where it connects to the plug ot the YoYo. If it's
the WallStreet connection then wiggling the plug relative to the
Wallstreet should show it. Try not to wiggle one while you are wiggling
 the other.

It is definately at the WallStreet end.

If it's the plug on the end of the DC cable, shave the plastic molding
down with a knife and resolder the wires. Slap it back together with
 heatshrink tubing and silicone rubber.

It has to be lifted up by putting a bunch of index cards under the power
cord at the rear of the WallStreet?

Nothing changed from one sound card to the next.

It sounds like you booted of the harddisk and it is running something
older than 8.5 or 8.6. Try booting off the CD-ROM.

2003-12-12 Thread Andrew Kershaw
it's os9.01
That's your problem. 9.0 will run on the Wallstreet and 9.0.4+ will
run on the Wallstreet, but anything in between is a machine-specific
release of Mac OS and hence won't run on the Wallstreet.

Peace,
Drew

If your YoYo's bad just start hacking at it to find the problem. If
you have a bad DC cable connection at the YoYo end, split open the
YoYo, strip the wire and re-solder it. Slap on a bit of silicone
rubber for a strain relief. Glue the YoYo back together with super
glue. It's not pristine, but you've got a power supply out of what
would have been landfill food.

If it's the plug on the end of the DC cable, shave the plastic molding
