Anyone else have a failed Wall Street hinge repair?

2004-01-02 Thread Gary Goldberg
Less than 3 weeks ago I got my Wall Street PB
back from PBParts with its hinge replaced with their
own steel hinges. At first, it seemed odd that when
I opened the PB the hinge was so tight that the
whole PB lifted off the desk. Then there was the
creaking as I opened it and a feeling of more and
more play in the screen position (I use it with
a VGA monitor plugged into the back so I need the
screen to stay up at about a 45-degree angle so
that I can see over the screen easily).

Looking into the back of my PB with the
cover closed I could see 2 small chips of material
about 1/4 by 1/8 that were sticking out, removed
them, photographed them, and send all this to
PBPart yesterday via e-mail.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

Apple CD Audio Player?

2004-01-02 Thread James
Hi,

Being new to OS 9 and using Jaguar exclusively I have a question that I hope
will not sound silly. I want my cd to play with Apple CD Audio Player
instead of iTunes. Every time I double click on the cd, iTunes starts. Apple
CD Audio player shows my song list, but does not play any of the songs. I
get a message that The Apple CD-Rom, DVD-Ram drive is not responding.
Could the problem be that I am using an external drive to play my cd's at
the moment? How can I select which program to open for a selected file?

Thanks

  James

I thought one other feature that the PowerBooks have over the iBooks was a CardBus

From what I have read, the iBook and the PowerBook 12 are almost the
same; they both use the same LCD screen, have basically the same bus and
processor speed (that is, if you are talking about the G4 iBook), and, I
believe, they have the same monitor output. The main advantages are the
SuperDrive, size and weight, and the stylish case design. The iBook G4 that
I have is very small, and it even fits in a PowerBook Duo carry case! Also,
unless the 15 monitor you are talking about has capabilities of 1024x768
resolution or better, it will not be any advantage over the built-in LCD
screen, as the iBook and PowerBook 12 both have max resolutions of
1024x768. I actually prefer the LCD over a CRT.

I don't have the 12 iBook but I do have the 12 Powebook which is very
nearly the same as the G4 iBook - it has the same mini-VGA video
output. And I just connected a VGA lead to the VGA-to-minVGA adapter,
plugged one end into the back of the monitor, the other end into the
Powerbook, and hey presto there was video output. That really is how it
ought to work.

Have you opened Displays when the external monitor is connected?

Assuming the monitor itself is OK and able to accept the frequency
output by the iBook (which is nothing extreme) there are a couple of
things to check: a) the VGA lead. Do you have any other computers that
you can use with the external monitor and this cable to prove that the
cable and the monitor are working? b) do you have access to any other
VGA-to-miniVGA adapters?

Assuming the VGA lead is OK, the fault must lie with either the iBook
miniVGA output slot, or the VGA-to-miniVGA adapter.

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade Problem

2004-01-02 Thread Glenn
Hello from Texas!

I know I'm overlooking the obvious but I'm not too proud to ask for help so
here goes ...

My Pismo needs more space ...

I bought a 30 gig Hitachi/IBM 2.5 mm HD to replace my loud, IBM 10 gig

The 10 gig came out fairly easily ... the 30 gig went in fairly easily but
when I put everything back together and go to install Panther on it, it
doesn't show up in the Destination volume pane. It's as quiet as a cloud.
It's as like it's not even in the Pismo.

Panicking, I put the 10 gig back in and smile when it boots normally.

I've tried this several times now, trying to match the 30 gig installation
precisely with the successful 10 gig but so far, no satisfaction.

Please, someone take the blinders from my eyes and tell me what I'm missing.
I'm a big boy, I can take constructive criticism.

I'm on Digest so a cc: private email would be appreciated also.

Thanks.

O/T DVD-RAM?

2004-01-02 Thread John Acuff
I know this is a bit o/t for this list, but I don't have any other
place to ask.
I am considering buying a G4/450 (Sawtooth) with a DVD-RAM drive to
replace my trusty BW G3/350. I am not familiar with this format, but
according to the research I have done so far, DVD-RAM is pretty much a
dead issue, so am I correct in assuming that I can still use this drive
to play regular DVD's and CD's, but the recording side will be pretty
much useless?
Thanks!

My newly repaired pismo

2004-01-02 Thread Joe

I just fixed my pismo, and when I turn it on the lcd is very red and then after about
the time it takes to get to the log in screen the red tinting is gone, is this a
common thing on pismos, or do I need to start looking for a new lcd for mine?

it works great other than this, and it doens't bother me at all, but I was wondering
if this means its failing or something?

I don't know if it is typical or not, but it could be a failing or loose
video cable from the pismo to the lcd.

As they all say, Just my 2 cents.

Couple years back there was discussion of pink LCD problems on some
Pismos. Never happened on mine and as far as I could tell while it was
real it was not very wide spread. I spose its possible you have one
that has that problem, its a direction to look in.

Re: My newly repaired pismo

2004-01-02 Thread Mark Edward Attew
It is common. It happened to a used PowerBook I bought. It was fine for
a month then exhibited the symptoms you mentioned on every wake from
sleep, every bootup. It will fade and shouldn't be noticeable as long
your brightness is on full.

Rumors were that it was the Samsung LCDs and not the LG LCDs that Apple
used, but for me it was the opposite. I replaced an LG with a Samsung a
few months ago and I've been fine ever since.
