Somewhat OT: looking for spyware tools

2004-01-10 Thread Gary Goldberg
Every once in a while I hit the disconnect on
Remote Access Status but for some reason the
computer (Wall Street upgraded to a G4/500 and
running OS 9.1) tries to dial out again.

I have Virex 6.1 and scanned the System Folder
again with no results but if it's spyware I wouldn't
expect an anti-virus program to do much good.

Are there any websites where, like anti-virus
programs, you can get a free spyware checkup?

pcmcia firewire recommendations? (was newertech firewire 2 go...)

2004-01-10 Thread john hudak
howdy folks! thank you for all the firewire information! from the
below two qutoed messages, i've pretty much figured out that either
the newertech card is bad, or the odd adapter between the card and
the female firewire connector is bad.

i can use my usb pcmcia card with the maxtor 5000dv with no
problem...it is even fast enough for me to burn cds on my powerbook
with the mce cdrw in the right bay.

with the newertech firewire 2 go card, i get the firewire icon in
os9.2.2, but no drive boots up, no matter whether i
restart/plug-unplug the firewire connection after restart/or
powerup-powerdown the maxtor drive. in os10.2.6, i get nothing. the
usb card works on both systems very well.

i am using a generic wallstreet g3/266 with 512mb ram (my powerlogix
g3/466 card seems to have burnt out). i seem to have no problems
with most applications with this setup.

what i'd like to know is what firewire pcmcia cards people have that
work well with the wallstreets. it seems owc has their own model,
with a number of other cards available...all at different prices...it
would be helpful to know if the cheaper one is just as good as the
most expensive...i.e. $30 to $79:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=1009Title=PowerBook%20AccessoriesTemplate=

thanks for any information!

best future,
john
1)

I have this card on a g3 wall street and run it successfully on OS(
and 10.1 and 10.2 now.

You should get an image of a card in the menu bar under OS10.2, but not 10.1
In OS9 an image of the card appears on the desktop.
In OS 9 there are two extensions which need to be switched on for
firewire. One of them incorporates drivers for the card. IN OS X no
additional drivers are needed. I use mine exclusively for a formac
cd burner, at the moment. About to add an external hard drive when
it arrives. Absolutley no problem with Jaguar II assure you.

Perhaps it is your peripheral device that is not being recognised. I
remember that with toast, the formac cd rw was not recognised. But
with Apple's own cd burner it is. So I ditched Toast, as unnecessary.

2)

From my experience--

In my WS 266 (os 9.2.1) I note that my NewerTech pc card, like all
my pc cards, must be carefully seated in either slot. If you are
not careful, you may misseat it and even damage the cage--apply
slight pressure to keep it going in level but pulled up toward the
top or pushed a little toward the bottom. I always put mine in the
top, but it may do just as well in the bottom.

There is a spring loading of sorts so you do have to push harder
right before the limit is reached going in.

Some dexterity required--probably why a lot of cages in Wallstreets
wind up damaged. Mine was replaced under Applecare once. But guess
who damaged it--a technician, while it was in for motherboard
replacement.

BTW, I had to buy a newer firewire card, from Western Digital, to
work with the firewire drive I bought. Newer was not new enough.

Re: pcmcia firewire recommendations? (was newertech firewire 2 go...)

2004-01-10 Thread chueewowee
There is a new Firewire 800 card out by Lacie. However it uses a separate
power supply because it is 800, and cannot be supplied with enough power
from the host computer, as I understand. Check it out.

However, it is not the 800 speed is compromised by the seek time of your
peripheral device. So for example a new Western Digital 1000 rpm is best,
but have limited size, much less than 160 GB (I think about 60 MB offhand).

Conclusion: Your Maxtor should be fine with any Firewire 400, such as OCW.

NeXT Laser Printer from Mac

2004-01-10 Thread Dante McLean
I have a question regarding printing to NeXT Laser Printer from the Mac.
I have the printer connected to a NeXTstation, and can print to it
from the NeXT no problem. The desktop printer is set up on the Mac, and
the printer utility verifies that the printer does exist at the
specified IP (ergo, I think that the Mac can see the printer, no
problem). However, when I try to print to it, the queue on the Mac
generates error -8827, and nothing comes out of the printer--in fact,
the spooled file on the Mac never goes to the NeXT, and opening the
queue on the Mac shows the file, with a message ##.#k left to send or
something close to that. I know that one is supposed to be able to
print to the NeXT printer as an internet printer from the Mac, and AFAIC
this should now be up and running, but is not. What gives?! Any ideas?

I'm running OS 8.2.2 on the PBG3, LaserWriter v.8.7.1, and with NeXT
Level I PPD in the printer description folder (I've modified it to
reflect language level II). NeXT is under OpenStep 4.2, running PPD for
Level II Postscript Laser Printer.

TIA for any advice on this one.

Agreed. It's not impossible, but it's unlikely.

More likely is that you still have a program running that wants a
TCP/IP connection active. Whenever it tries to connect to its
service (web browser connecting to a web server, say - or Hotline
client to Hotline server, etc), it will prompt OpenTransport to start
a new connection by dialing the modem.

Try quitting all Internet related programs before disconnecting the modem.

installed that could have produced this? Is there anyway to find out
what is generating it?

OT: Windows laptop with AirPort possible?

2004-01-10 Thread Laurent Daudelin
I got this crappy laptop from work which I need to setup in the event I got
production support to do. It is a Dell Latitude D600 with the Dell
TrueMobile 1300, which is a 802.11b wireless card.

I have an ABS that works fine with my PowerBook, but no matter what I did, I
can't seem to connect the friggin' PC on the network. I changed the settings
for TCP/IP for a static address, since all my computers on my network have a
static IP address, I entered all information for the router and the DNS
server, the thing still report that there is no network. The laptop comes
with a control panel named TrueMobile 1300 Client Utility. This control
panel lets me see and connect to network. I can see my ABS name and
configure it. Still, no network connection.

What am I missing? Friggin', stupid Windows crap!

noticed anything that I can trace back to that.
If you are feeling a continuous tingle the problem is leakage current
in the power supply. Because of capacitance that exists between the
otherwise isolated AC to DC line power supply, a small amount of the
AC line voltage leaks into the DC output. In a desktop computer this
current is conducted to ground by the ground wire on the AC cord, but
on a laptop there is no ground wire.

When I go running and come home and use my powerbook at the kitchen
table with my feet in sweaty socks on a ceramic tile floor, my body
provides the path for this leakage current to get to ground. The left
edge of my tiBook frame has lost its paint because of abrasion from my
watch band. When skin brushes up against bare metal, a slight tingle
can be felt.

Anodization is non-conductive, so an AlBook without scratches should
not tingle your skin if your body is grounded.

Thanks, Paul.

I don't get a continuous tingle, just a slight momentary one that tells
me that I've just discharged some static electricity via the PowerBook.
Once that happens, there's no further discharge or tingle. Having been
used to the old clamshell iBook, the aluminum PowerBook is a new
experience (in a variety of ways).

2004-01-10 Thread Mark Rath
I have an iBook FireWire (Indigo) and want to know what the fastest CD-RW
drive out there is available for this ibook. I currently have an Iomega 650

Re: OT: Windows laptop with AirPort possible?

I know the 1150 is a rebranded Lucent WaveLan Gold, but I don't know about
the 1300. Try it out on one of your Mac laptops and see if it recognizes it
as an AirPort card. If it doesn't that could be your problem. I don't think
that AirPort has very good compatibility with non-airport (Lucent/Orinoco)
hardware.

Another option might be to try out DHCP instead of Static IP.
