data recovery software
HI, I am looking for suggestions on data recovery software. I want to undelete some files that I trashed. I am using Mac OS 9 on a Pismo Powerbook. I have tried Norton Systemworks without much success (I did not use Norton Filesaver prior to my trashing). Re: Sharing OS9 printer with OSX powerbook
I don't think use USB print sharing on an OS9 machine unless the client machine is running OS9 or classic. That is not really too much of a problem. I often use Word 98 or 2001 because Word X and other stuff won't print in OSX because OSX has such horrible printing problems--particularly with older docs that use older fonts and so forth. Photoshop 7 opens in classic or OSX depending upon what you set in the info window. Other documents can be printed in preview and then printed in classic. The print to preview technique is actually a very interesting technique--and also a way to break some restrictions on Adobe PDF documents. It appears that Jaguar will now print over some server--like the Asante router that has a parrallel port--and that previously could only print from a PC or from Mac to postscript printer. so I'm wondering if maybe Jaguar could print straight to an OS9 machine--but I doubt it. -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Personal LaserWriter LS on WallStreet
I was not aware that the Personal Laserwriter LS printers were postscript printers. If they were not then of course Laserwriter8 wont work on them--and the only driver that will work on the printer is the driver for that printer--and that printer only. There has to be info on this on the web---and there is always fixyourownprinter.com. Mikael says: I have a similar problem with a LaserWriter NTX that lacks Ethernet and so won't work under OS X A Laserwriter II NTX has a localtalk port and uses postscript--which works under any system. Get an ethernet to localtalk bridge of some kind and make sure appletalk is selected in the network stuff.I was initially thinking maybe I should offer to give you one of my spare bridges, but then I changed my mind to thinking that maybe you would want to give me the printer instead. -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Hard Drive Advice for Pismo
If you are screwing around with lots of mp3s and Photoshop go ahead and get an external drive. You cannot believe how fast photos suck-up disk space. Also, external drives are faster than laptop drives. Keep an eye open for cheap firewire boxes as well as cheap drives in the 160 to 250 gig range--there are internal drives going for as low as 50¢ a Gig. I got a firewire CD box on sale at OWC for $50 and I should have got two. I swap in and out of it a 160Gig drive a DVD drive and some other drives. What is cool is that it has two firewire plugs, so one goes to the camera and one to the laptop. Make sure if you get a box that it supports the ultra ata drives. Still a fish out of water in USB Land
Hello again fellow Mac PowerBookers, I'm still seeking a solution to get a brand new Samsung ML-1710 Monochrome USB printerto work with a recently acquired PowerBook G3 (Lombard), running in OS 9.2.2. My previously reported problem has not budged, despite several helpful suggestions. Following one suggestion I obtained from this list, I installed a new driver, after downloading it from Samsung's site, (a slightly updated v. 1.65 from the 1.64 that came with the printer on CD-ROM. Even with this newly updated driver, I still get the message that the needed driver software cannot be found. The cable I purchased at the same place as this new USB printer is a Belkin USB2 Hi-speed cable. I wonder is perhaps the problem is caused by the high-speed Belkin USB-2 cable, and perhaps I need to use a USB-1 cable instead? (I'm not veryl familiar with USB-1, or USB-2, despite hearing talk in the past of their possible incompatibilities (or backward compatibilities?). The chooser shows SAMSUNG SPL II in the left window, but nothing in the right window, perhaps because the attempt to connect with USB cable does not pertain to the previously familiar serial modem or printer ports. If I don't figure out how to get this new printer to work in the next few days, I'm considering returning it to the retailer that sold it to me, but I'm still hoping for a (hopefully simple) solution. (And I haven't even yet pursued my other eventual need, that of finding a USB compatible MIDI interface!) Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I had the same problem myself - ended up (before I got DSL) having a friend download it (he has a DSL connection). The download is very, very finicky. Don't recall if they have installation stuff, but you can find that on Transinternational's site and Apple's. Look on Apple's site for CIP - Customer Installable Parts and PowerBook (Firewire).
