Very true, but if there was a backup of the data, there would be no need to try and retrieve the lost files with recovery software such as TechTool or Norton. When there is no backup available, as was the case in the original post, having a partition allows you to save the recovered files to another, separate segment of the HD without fear of overwriting other files you might still want to recover from the first partition. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Still a fish out of water in USB Land
G'day Greenfield This is a longshot-but in your predicament, it's probably worth a try. I haven't had this exact situation, but I did with the HP 1200 laserjet ( a big problem for Mac users, unlike the support HP gave for their real printers, the 4/5/6MPs). The idea is to use Apple's LaserWriter8 driver. Delete any of your Samsung desktop printers. In ControlPanels=Extensions, disable any Samsung Chooser drivers. The next step is important-make sure your printer is powered up, USB cable connected, and ready. Now restart. Go to Applications/Utilities and invoke DesktopPrinterUtility. With LaserWriter8 selected (it will probably be thje only option available), and in the window Create Desktop, select Printer (USB), (do not select Samsung if you see one as an option!). Hit OK. You will then see a window with two windows. The first is to selct a PPD - (select the appropriate Samsung PPD, or if none, select Generic. (I'm presuming the Samsung is a PostScript printer). In the window USB Printer Selection you should see your Samsung-if not select Change, and then Create. I'm sure that I saw in some post recently that a user was singing the praises of a Samsung printer. My only doubt is the PostScript part. Regards James Hello again fellow Mac PowerBookers, I'm still seeking a solution to get a brand new Samsung ML-1710 Monochrome USB printerto work with a recently acquired PowerBook G3 (Lombard), running in OS 9.2.2. My previously reported problem has not budged, despite several helpful suggestions. Following one suggestion I obtained from this list, I installed a new driver, after downloading it from Samsung's site, (a slightly updated v. 1.65 from the 1.64 that came with the printer on CD-ROM. Even with this newly updated driver, I still get the message that the needed driver software cannot be found. The cable I purchased at the same place as this new USB printer is a Belkin USB2 Hi-speed cable. I wonder is perhaps the problem is caused by the high-speed Belkin USB-2 cable, and perhaps I need to use a USB-1 cable instead? (I'm not veryl familiar with USB-1, or USB-2, despite hearing talk in the past of their possible incompatibilities (or backward compatibilities?). The chooser shows SAMSUNG SPL II in the left window, but nothing in the right window, perhaps because the attempt to connect with USB cable does not pertain to the previously familiar serial modem or printer ports. If I don't figure out how to get this new printer to work in the next few days, I'm considering returning it to the retailer that sold it to me, but I'm still hoping for a (hopefully simple) solution. (And I haven't even yet pursued my other eventual need, that of finding a USB compatible MIDI interface!) Thanks in advance for any suggestions. The new 20 Gig one seems to be fine (so far) After reading a whole lot on the subject of iPod battery it seems to me that: a) those battery will last for (about) 2 years or anywhere between 200 and 500 charges b) The best way to go about it is never charge the iPod unless it is almost dead; Not because of the memory factor, but simply because the battery Kind of remember how many time it has been charged, and not the amount of energy left in the Battery. c) Follow Apple iPod/iTunes up date, that is the best (and maybe) only way to maintain your iPod Battery in top shape d) Sure way to know if you need to replace the battery is simply making the rationale as to: How long does it need to be charge vs how long will it play Exemple: Charged for 12 hours vs played for 2 hours e) If you want your Battery to last longer, do the following; Do not set 1) Sound Check 2) Continuous play 3) Equalizer 4) The Shuffle and play list functions d) Put the Back light control to the minimum f) If all else fails go to www.pdasmart.com the will sell you a new battery for your iPod that (with confidence) you can replace yourself g) Send it in to PDASmart so they will change it for you (less expansive service than Apple h) If you are still under Apple warranty do not hesitate send it in! i) If you can purchase a Apple Care extended Warranty for your iPod it will pay for itself Hope that help you Kind Regards Hugo Trottier Editor The Digital Dispatch On 14-Jan-04, at 11:08 AM, BA wrote: I have several iBooks/Powerbooks that seem to be niggardly with respect to battery life. Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks
e) If you want your Battery to last longer, do the following; Do not set 1) Sound Check 2) Continuous play 3) Equalizer 4) The Shuffle and play list functions d) Put the Back light control to the minimum Couple of things to add. A) Your ipod is always on, even when it doesn't appear to be. That is one reason that it can be ready to go so quickly when you press a button. If you have it fully charged, and then leave it sit for 4 or 5 days, you will notice that the battery level has dropped quite a bit. B) The size of your tracks will greatly influence the amount of battery life that you have. A track that does not fit fully within the cache of the ipod is going to hit the drive and thus the battery more. Higher bitrate MP3s will also cause a faster battery loss due to the processor needing to work harder to decode them. I've had my 10GB ipod for a year and have not had any battery issues as of yet. Printing In Reverse
I'm looking for help again. We have 2 iBooks (a 700 and 900 G3) that are both running 10.3.2. With different programs (Word, Appleworks, Safari) and different printers (Brother, Epson), we are consistently getting printouts that are in the reverse order (last page first and so forth). I have seen this on the Apple discussion boards for Panther too and the usual advice is to check various preferences. Believe, me we have checked everything and nothing is set for reverse printing, although that is an option with Word, for example. In some cases with Word, a section will print in reverse, then the next section will print in the correct order, even though the formatting is the same for both sections. From the old days when printers were hell to configure, it seems to me that Panther is sending some kind of code to the printers that reverses printing, but I do not know how to fix this. Is anybody else getting reverse printing with Panther? Does anybody know a cure for this? John -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... USB Printer Problem -- still unsolved
Hello again fellow Mac PowerBook Users, I'm still seeking a solution to get a brand new Samsung ML-1710 Monochrome USB printer to work with a recently acquired PowerBook G3 (Lombard), running in OS 9.2.2. (I'm not very familiar with USB-1, or USB-2, despite overhearing talk in the past of their possible incompatibilities (or backward compatibleness?). Re: A new question about data recovery
Okay, so please don't tell me the obvious, because it is painfully so, but I have an external FW drive that was my backup. It wasn't redundant though, so when it went ka-blewie, so did the data that was backed up on there and only existed on there. Basically, due to a bad power setup in my house, the power wanes and surges everytime the heater comes on. (Lesson learned there!) But now my FW drive isn't Recognized by this Macintosh and wants to be initialized. Now if I do this, can I recover some of the stuff that was there? What can I do to increase my chances? Burn DVD's or use an external HD. Most times all partitions will be lost at one time when a device fails. Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks
There was a article on one of the news shows that went into the issue with the iPod battery problem, where they only lost around 18 months. Originally Apple would not replace the battery, and felt the iPod was a disposable item, but after some creative negative advertising by some film makers, they now offer battery changing directly from Apple. I have no idea of how much the service costs though! Tom on 1/14/04 10:08, BA at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have several iBooks/Powerbooks that seem to be niggardly with respect to battery life. However, the opposite seems to be true with the iPods recently purchased. In fact, I almost need to charge my one iPod daily as the battery drain is so horrible! Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks
I have to correct some of you statements Tom. Apple offered the replacement service two weeks before the domain name ipodsdirtylittlesecret was even registered, that was the domain of the people who ran the advertising campaign. That site also was connected to encouraging inflammatory vandalism of Apple ad physical space such as store signs and billboards. Nearly six other vendors also offer a similar battery replacement service. Prices vary from $60-100. Lithium Ion batteries only last 18-24 months on average use whether it be a PowerBook battery, iPod battery, or Sony Viao battery, that is just how the battery works. Some last longer, depends on use, conditions, all sorts of stuff, some also last shorter. I find it funny in a very sick way that Apple customers are talking about suing Apple when every laptop available uses the same technology and Dell uses the same technology in their music player ... no one is complaining about those instances ... Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks
I have no issue with Apple (Just back from MacWorld), including the battery only lasting 18 months or so. The problem I had, was their initial refusal to replace the iPod battery, looking at it as a $400 disposable item. Tom on 1/14/04 22:31, David M. Re: USB Printer Problem
Hello again fellow Mac PowerBook Users, I'm still seeking a solution to get a brand new Samsung ML-1710 Monochrome USB printer to work with a recently acquired PowerBook G3 (Lombard), running in OS 9.2.2. My previously reported problem has not budged, despite several helpful suggestions. My guess is it's the cable. I had a similar problem that turned out to be a bad USB 1.1 cable. Yours might be because of the USB 2 cable, I really don't know. (And I haven't even yet pursued my other eventual need, that of finding a USB compatible MIDI interface!) I ordered the Midiman Sport 2 x 2 because I could get 2 ports for just a little more money than the single port interface. http://m-audio.rjmg.com/index.cfm?gid=175 Jackie -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
