Both slots can hold at least 256MB. So, you can have 512MB. That's what I
have with my Pismo. Make sure that you buy your memory from reputable
resellers that guarantee their memory with OS X or that you can at least
return it for a refund if it doesn't work. I have been very satisfied with
Data Memory System for all the memory I bought
from them. They have good prices and good service.

and that the first try at a big new idea is always wrong. Unfortunately,
because these truths don't fit the planning models beloved of management,

Re: RAM needed for OS X on Lombard

2004-01-16 Thread Adam Thayer
Officially, the bottom slot can take a 128 low-profile DIMM and the
upper slot can take a 256. Unofficially, many people have put 256MB
low-profile DIMMs in the lower slot for a total of 512MB RAM. OWC seems
to be a good source for this because of the lifetime warranty and
guarantee that they meet Apple's specs.

Re: Jaguar or Panther on Lombard?

They will work better in Classic, and I would go with MacOS X 10.3,
personally. You have to purchase one of them, and it might as well be
the newest. 10.3 runs very well on my Lombard 333, with Photoshop 7
running well natively. I used Office 98 a few times, and it feels
almost as snappy as under 9, but not quite. Still, the Classic
compatibility is much better in 10.2 and 10.3 than it is in 10.1

You would benefit more from Panther than Jaguar, as it feels generally
faster on slower CPUs. I would imagine that most of these applications would
work under Classic, but I haven't tested them. One possible problem, though,
could be with Toast as it might not have a cleared access to the hardware
under Classic. Depending on the version you have, you might be able to
download an updater that will make it native under OS X. Same with PhotoShop
7. PhotoShop 7 can run natively under OS X, so if you already have that
version for OS 9, you might be able to find an updater on the Adobe web site
that will make your OS 9 version an OS X version.

Re: Still a "fish out of water" in USB Land

2004-01-16 Thread James Sokoll
G'day Greenfield

This is a longshot-but in your predicament, it's probably worth a try.
I haven't had this exact situation, but I did with the HP 1200
laserjet ( a big problem for Mac users, unlike the support HP gave
for their real printers, the 4/5/6MPs).

The idea is to use Apple's LaserWriter8 driver.

Delete any of your Samsung desktop printers.
In ControlPanels=>Extensions, disable any Samsung Chooser drivers.
The next step is important-make sure your printer is powered up, USB
cable connected, and ready.
Now restart.
Go to Applications/Utilities and invoke DesktopPrinterUtility.
With LaserWriter8 selected (it will probably be thje only option
available), and in the window "Create Desktop", select Printer
(USB), (do not select Samsung if you see one as an option!). Hit OK.
You will then see a window with two windows. The first is to selct a
PPD - (select the appropriate Samsung PPD, or if none, select
. (I'm presuming the Samsung is a PostScript printer).

In the window USB Printer Selection you should see your Samsung-if
not select , and then .

I'm sure that I saw in some post recently that a user was singing
the praises of a Samsung printer.

My only doubt is the PostScript part.

James
Hello again fellow Mac PowerBookers,

I'm still seeking a solution to get a brand new Samsung ML-1710
Monochrome USB printerto work with a recently acquired PowerBook G3
(Lombard), running in OS 9.2.2. My previously reported problem has
not budged, despite several helpful suggestions.

Following one suggestion I obtained from this list, I installed a
new driver, after downloading it from Samsung's site, (a slightly
updated v. 1.65 from the 1.64 that came with the printer on CD-ROM.
Even with this newly updated driver, I still get the message that
the needed driver software "cannot be found."

The cable I purchased at the same place as this new USB printer is
a Belkin USB2 Hi-speed cable. I wonder is perhaps the problem is
caused by the high-speed Belkin USB-2 cable, and perhaps I need to
use a USB-1 cable instead? (I'm not veryl familiar with USB-1, or
USB-2, despite hearing talk in the past of their possible
incompatibilities (or "backward compatibilities"?).

The chooser shows "SAMSUNG SPL II" in the left window, but nothing
in the right window, perhaps because the attempt to connect with
USB cable does not pertain to the previously familiar serial modem
or printer ports.

If I don't figure out how to get this new printer to work in the
next few days, I'm considering returning it to the retailer that
sold it to me, but I'm still hoping for a (hopefully simple)
solution.

(And I haven't even yet pursued my other eventual need, that of
finding a USB compatible MIDI interface!)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

opening the wallstreet display

2004-01-16 Thread Mikael Byström
How feasible would it be to open the wallstreet display all the way into
the metal housing and take the backlighting from one LCD and move it to
another or alternatively move only the actual LCD display from one metal
housing to another?

The reason for my question is that I just got my hands on a complete 2nd
hand WS display for $95 and while it works fine, the right bottom of the
front case had 2 cracks in the right bottom corner. Also you could see
into the the display along the right side where the back and front meet,
through a 1-2mm opening for 6-9 cms, as the back and front didn't exactly
fit snugly into each other unless you pressed them together. I later
discovered the internal metal housing that holds the LCD was slitghtly
warped and pressed on the back display housing, causing that and the
front to go apart somewhat. Anyway I replaced the front with my old whole
one and now the gap is much smaller, like only 1mm or less. But maybe I
could do better?

One additional reason for opening the metal house, is that I have 2
miscolored spots on the display, that very subtly give a yellowish
coloration cloud like 1 cm in diameter, like there was something on the
actual surface, inside or outside at these 2 positions (most visible at
left side and right bottom corner). While it's probably acceptable I
can't help wondering if opening the metal housing and clean it or
something could help. Any idea what can cause such miscolorations and
whether I could do something about it?

What do you guys think? Is it a great risk opening the metal housing and
move the LCD? Is at all doable? I have taken apart wallstreets about 10
times now, so I know to be very careful and all that. But maybe this is
not enough? I only have 3 tools and I suspect I may need more for the
metal housing.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Paul, if you mean that the display backlighting is totally turned off
and that this happens after the powerbook was sleeping and lost power so
it got turned off or similar situations, then that problem can to my
knowledge only be cured by booting into OS 9 once, from disk or CD. I
have normally have to do it twice as my computer crashes the first time I
boot into OS 9, after I have this problem.

If you want to boot from OS 9 internally and the display backlighting is
off you can see what you're doing by pointing a spotlight to the screen.
Then choose to boot from the OS 9 system the normal way. You may find it
more convenient to pop in a OS 9 CD and restart with the start button and
press down "c".

I suppose there's some PRAM setting for Quartz or something that goes
bonkers when this problem occur (usually the display goes dark only when
Quartz first kicks in). From your description I guess you're discovering
the problem *after* one situation when the machine lost power and you
have booted anew and then put it to sleep. In some situations pressing
the light button back and forth may finally turn on the display until
next time you set it to sleep or reboot. In my experience booting into OS
9 is the only thing that can reliably cure this to allow for normal
restarts and sleep. If someone knows exactly why this problem occur and
whether one can get to this setting in some other way, that would be
interesting to know.

I do seem to remember one can get rid off the ATI drivers and this
problem will go away, but of course one wonders if that will make
graphics slower. My guess it will not as Quartz graphics in a Wallstreet
is typically calculated in the CPU and RAM anyway (as there is no QE
support nor enough RAM to do hardware accelaration). I guess the driver
can be taken offline by removing "Sys
tem:Library:Extensions:ATIRagePro.kext", but I'm not completely positive
this is the right file and I haven't verified that this problem actually
goes away by removing it. Maybe someone else can fill in here. Or just
try and see for yourself.

Hi,

I have developed Open GL code on my old wallstreet II under OSX. It
runs in software mode, no benefit of hardware acceleration (as far as I
know). To compile using gcc I include in my Makefile:

INCLUDE = -I/usr/X11R6/include/
COMPILERFLAGS = -no-cpp-precomp -flat_namespace
MACLIBS = -F/System/Library/Frameworks -framework OpenGL -framework Glut
LIBS = -lm
CFLAGS = $(COMPILERFLAGS) $(INCLUDE)
CC = gcc -g
exe_name: $(OBJS)
   $(CC) -o $@ $(MACLIBS) $(LIBS)
It can also be done using X11 instead. Let me know if that is the way
you want to go and I can grab the compiler options for you if you need them.

Actually, the Framework *IS* OpenGL under OS X... all the 'extensions'

I think it depends on what the application requiring OpenGL needs as

OpenGL

hardware acceleration of OpenGL, so expect 2-5 frames per second on
intensive full-screen apps.

Actually, the Framework *IS* OpenGL under OS X... all the 'extensions'
are now Frameworks and kexts under OS X. Unfortunately, you need a
Pismo or later to get OpenGL under OS X from a Powerbook.
I think it depends on what the application requiring OpenGL needs as

OpenGL
is ruled out on a Wallstreet. Hardware acceleration might not be
available,
but that doesn't rule out OpenGL. I could be wrong, though...

Another possible factor is how you have your advanced account settings
set up. Often, there are options to leave mail on server for one

a lot of mail, this could keep your mailbox full or close to full all

Wallstreet HD upgrade question

2004-01-16 Thread Andre Ruegg
I just replaced the original 4 GB drive in my wife's 266 Wallstreet with a
20 GB drive. I had partitioned the drive into 2 partitions with a 8 GB first
partition in anticipation of installing Jaguar. I had backed up her original
hard drive with OS 9.2.2 with a simple system copy to an external firewire
drive and copied it to the second partition after doing a clean install of
9.2.2 into the first partition to be able to access the firewire drive but
her system on the second partition won't boot up. It crashes at the startup
screen.

Do all bootable systems have to be in the first 8 GB or am I having other
problems? The system will boot if extensions are disabled so I am suspecting
I have somehow picked up an extension conflict or incompatibility.

My wife would appreciate a prompt resolution to the problem. :-)

Thanks,

Andre

A: DON'T initialize your disk--it will wipe it clean.

As Mikael says: use these other programs--I like diskwarrior. He is
also right about Norton--save it to the last--or don't use it at all.
Don't overwrite anything on the disk until you have all you want
back. (diskwarrior will tell you what it will give you back and you
can elect to have it recover to the original disk--if it gets it
all--or if it only recovers a bit--please write it to another disk.

It is a GOOD THING you don't have any "filesaver" type software on
your disk. Most of that stuff makes things worse.

Repairing yo-yo adaptor

2004-01-16 Thread Gerald Loong
Hi all,

My yo-yo adaptor is no longer working & I suspect it's because the user
was too rough with pulling the wires. Question is how do I open the
adaptor so that I can reconnect/ rewire it again. The power cord is
fine as I tested it with another adaptor. The problem is with the yo-yo
adaptor.

Thanks for your help.
