Likewise Kudo's for DW...We had 2 partitions on this imac se 400 and had
been running 9.2.2 on one and Jag X on the otherNorton 6.0.3 had
been working great on the 9.2.2 then somehow it crosslinked files into
the OS X and really screwed everything up on both partitionsAt one
point last July it was taking over 1/2 hr to get booted up into 9.2.2
It keep giving me the blinking disk...ie the smile of death for the
hd...Luckily I got to Philadelphia that weekend and got DW at the
CompUSA there. When I got home and started to run it, it took about 2
to 3 hrs to run but it did fix everything eventually and I haven't used
Norton since...Don't know about any later release of it...We were
fortunate to have gotten the 30 gig iPod right before the mess occured
and were able to back up the entire 9.2.2 stuff to it via FW target
mode...Reformatted entire 60gig Maxtor hd and started over...I run DW
about every 2 weeks or so, along w/ Panther utitlity repair permissions
etc on the 10.3 partition.

Well, I think that your main problem is that you used version 6.0.3 which
is, according to the above, for OS 9. If that version was specifically
written for OS 9, then it is quite possible (I don't know for sure since
I've never used it, and I'm doing fine, thank you) that it couldn't
understand some stuff from the OS X partition, like symbolic links. You
could maybe try to use a version for OS X, but, again, I have been running
OS X on 2 different computers since the original OS X public beta back in
2001 and never had any problems that I couldn't fix without the tools I had,
i.e. OS X Disk Utility. Even if I had serious problems that Disk Utility
could not fix, I wouldn't trust any utility to fix them; I would just backup
my stuff, then do a format and re-install. That's why I have 3 partitions on
my Pismo: one for the OS X system disk, one for OS 9 system disk and a last
one for all the remaining stuff. Everything I install that doesn't require
to be in /Applications or /Applications/Utilities, or on the system disk in
general, I put on the 3rd partition. So, in the event that something goes
really wrong, I usually only have to backup my home directory on an external
firewire disk, reformat and reinstall OS X. That way, I'm always sure that
everything in the system is clean. I had to do that maybe 2 or 3 times since
I've been running OS X, and that is on 2 different computers, my PowerBook
Pismo and my Blue & White G4...

Just my $0.02...

I also suspect that archive and install won't work, so I'm going ahead
with a clean install, after backing up the book in FireWire mode

My question to the list now is (perhaps I should have changed the
subject?):
I've read many bad accounts about Norton Utilities, is it really that bad?
I have used regularly the antivirus and defrag on my powerbook for over a
year now and occasionally the doctor and this is really the first time it
messes up (it was Utilities 6.0.3 for OS 9) and it messed up a freshely
set-up partition with no fancy installs on it (FileSaver started already
to report problems even before I could switch it off as I do usually right
after a fresh install). I'd like to hear some opinions and what are the
possible alternative for disc maintenance and repair?

Many speak well of Disk Warrior, but the few times I ran it to correct
problems, it would always report problems, tell me they were corrected,
only to report and correct the same problems again if I launched it right
after it finished its first repair. Disk Warrior has never corrected a
problem for me (and never messed up), Norton yes (corrected + messed)

I made the upgrade back in November and am quite happy with it. I got about

Unless your doing graphic intensive apps or video processing I wouldn't
worry too much about altivec. . . anyway, I hear that the

actually faster than the G4/500MHZ according to some bench test.

check out this link:

I have a G3/500MHZ Pismo that I bought from a guy oversees, well taken
of I might add. .
and it's the best mobile unit that I've ever had. . I have no desire at
all to upgrade to another computer. Oh, and another thing, the only
reason why I have not upgraded to the Blue Chip Pismo card from
Powerlogix is because I'm a little unsure about heat issues. . as you
know that powerbooks run a little warm anyway, and with a faster chip.
. well, I'm just not sure. You might need to checkout some bench test
before you buy.

Marc,

You don't mention what operating system you're using, so I'm going to
assume
it's X. Since the introduction of Airport 3.1.1 in June of last year,
Jaguar
supports the use of any third-party g card based on the Broadcom
chipset.
There's no special driver; just plug in the card and Jaguar will treat
it
like an Airport Extreme. (Details can be found at
.)

PCMCIA cards that use the Broadcom chipset include BuffaloTech,
Linksys and
Belkin, among others (a comprehensive list can be found at
). I'm using a
Linksys
WPC54G, and it's worked perfectly on my Wallstreet since the day I
bought
it, and no extra drivers were necessary.

As I said, this solution only works under Jaguar or later. If you've
got an
earlier system, you're probably going to have to find something that
comes
with Mac drivers.

Hope this helps,

Mitch.

Re: OSX won't let me boot OS9

2004-01-21 Thread Jim
Timothy,

I have a Wallstreet 266 mhz and I finally got a big enough hard drive
for something besides OS9. I put OS9 on the second partition, then
installed OSX on the first partition of 7.5 gigs, and after that it
wouldn't let me boot into OS9. What am I doing wrong?
I have found that from time to time it is necessary to rebuild the
classic desktop from within OS X, before X will let you boot up into 9.
This is what you need to do, starting within OS X, with nothing else
running. You may want to print this out:

1. Open System Preferences (from the Apple Menu)
2. Click on "Startup Disk" in System Preferences Panel.
3. Click on the System 9 folder that you want to eventually start up
from*. DO NOT click "restart" at this point.
4. Click on the "show all" button a the top; when asked if you are sure
you want to change the startup disk, click the "change" button to
proceed.
5. Click on the "Classic" button in the system preferences window.
6. Wait a moment, then be sure the same system folder that you
previously designated as the startup disk is now selected in the list
of classic system folders. DO NOT click "start".
7. Click on the "advanced" tab in the Classic window.
8. Click on the "rebuild desktop" button at the bottom of the window,
and allow the process to finish.
9. Now quit the System Preferences.
10. Restart your Mac. You can hold down the "option" key at the very
beginning of startup, to bring up a window allowing you to choose what
system to boot into. I find that occasionally I will choose the System
9 partition, but during startup it will switch to X. This problem is
invariably solved by rebuilding the Classic desktop, as instructed
above.

*If the System 9 folder doesn't appear here, it means you do not have a
valid System 9 startup folder. This may be an issue of "blessing" the
system folder, for which you need to start up from a System 9 CD, then
open the unblessed system folder, and "get info" on the system and
finder. Then restart under X and continue with the above steps.

I hope this helps you, or other listreaders.

-Jim.

I'm not sure how you could go about that. Try recovering your home folder if
you can. If it is a laptop, you could try to use it in FireWire mode from
another Mac. Then, I'm afraid you will have to do a full install. You could
try the archive and install, but I'm not sure it will work as it seems that
the OS is expecting directories where it finds files and vice versa...

any idea about how to recover without having to re-install? Since I have
access to the partition via the shell when trying to boot on it, there's
perhaps a simple way?

Two more things:

Files on /private/etc/ (such as the affected
master.passwd) are hidden files and I can't access them booting from
another partiton.

In another machine (running Jaguar) I can Change Dir to
/private/etc/ and access the files from Terminal, but in this case I can't
CD or list them, as I get the mentioned error

I'm not even sure if install & archive would cure this?

Re: Buying an iBook.. Qualification Correction

2004-01-21 Thread Kochkodin
All I know is that it worked for me and several others...Ask and ye
shall receive...Many people aren't aware of the program and will just
buy w/out ever thinking of asking..The idea is to get as much kit into
as many new hands as possibleConsidering that(if my latest info is
correct) the margin for Apple is around 25% the idea of taking $100-$200
off in order to get someone to buy a system, printer etc is very
effective.. There MAY be a restriction dealing w/laptops since the
demand is so high.. (again...Supply vs Demand) Just wanted to offer a
friendly, helpful suggestion..Used enough space here..
Gotta run..
Regards,
Mike

Re: Buying an iBook.. Qualification Correction

2004-01-21 Thread Kochkodin
It may well have been that they wouldn't deal since the ibooks were the
brand new rage at the time and they wanted to keep the upper price
level...(supply vs demand) I had bought as a parent first then 18
months later I did it as a board member...Maybe it depends on the sales
agent that you get???
Anyway...The point is to call and ask and stress that you are in the ed
field...There MAY be a possible restriction on the sale of the brand new
top of line...but if you don't call and ask you will never know..
BTW.. My school district is in west/central PA and we have 2 mac labs in
the library using imac's...Later..

Marc,

You don't mention what operating system you're using, so I'm going to assume
it's X. Since the introduction of Airport 3.1.1 in June of last year, Jaguar
supports the use of any third-party g card based on the Broadcom chipset.
There's no special driver; just plug in the card and Jaguar will treat it
like an Airport Extreme. (Details can be found at
.)

PCMCIA cards that use the Broadcom chipset include BuffaloTech, Linksys and
Belkin, among others (a comprehensive list can be found at
). I'm using a Linksys
WPC54G, and it's worked perfectly on my Wallstreet since the day I bought
it, and no extra drivers were necessary.

As I said, this solution only works under Jaguar or later. If you've got an
earlier system, you're probably going to have to find something that comes
with Mac drivers.

Hope this helps,

Mitch.

I assume you mean a Ethernet-LocalTalk bridge, not a printer network
interface card? You have anHP printer with no ethernet interface, just a
LocalTalk network connection? This setup doesn't work with a purely
serial printer.

There are several different devices that will bridge between Ethernet and
LocalTalk networks.

The one that I have had experience of is the Dayna Mini EtherPrint. It
works transparently. Just plug in an ethernet cable connected to your
network and a LocalTalk cable connected to your printer. The printer
appears in Chooser in Mac OS 9 or can be added using Print Center as a
AppleTalk printer in Mac OS X.

On eBay look under Macintosh for something like Etherprint or
Ethernet-LocalTalk bridge. Hope this helps
