James,
I was with earthlink dial-up for 18 months until Verizon DSL became
available to me 10/03...Switched and haven't regretted it...Running an
imac se 400 pismo 400...both 10.3.2 w/ 1 gig ram and airport along
with a gateway 333 desktop W98SE w/ a lucent wireless card in it...They
all run at the same time and the dsl works flawlesslyThe only
problem has been that occasionally when friends in Australia, England
and Germany send stuff it never shows up..I talked to Verizon about this
and they denied having blockers running...but it seems that right after
I complained about the problem, it disappeared. Also, I get the
Register newsletter from London daily and that was blocked for a while
until I called and I haven't missed any issue since early December.

New PB user questions

2004-02-24 Thread dan_A
Hi Listers-

I'm a new to owning a Powerbook and have some questions.

I recently bought a used 15, G4, 800 MHz Powerbook which has Panther installed. The
seller gave me the set of system discs that came with the machine, 10.1, without the
Panther upgrade discs and without documentation. The owner also had no need for OS 9
so there is no classic installed. Owning a lot of older Macs with different
requiremets for installing OS 10, I need some help on the following, and anything
else that I might be over-looking from lack of experience--

I also purchased a used, full install set of Panther discs (without printed
documentation).

Would this software have the Powerbook CP's or any components that might exist for the
Powerbook? I didn't see Powerbook specific Panther installation discs at Apple.

Is it necessary to partition the 60 GB drive when I install drivers for 9.2.2-to
create a separate partition for each OS and relating to this question, does this
machine boot in 9.2.2?

The machine is beautiful and runs very fast in Panther--I am overwhelmed by it. It
also seems to get very hot on the bottom--Is this normal and OK?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Panther on Pismo

2004-02-24 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
I have a G3/500 w/ 12 GB hard drive and 256 MB of RAM running 9.2.2. I have
a new Lacie 160 GB Firewire hard drive for backups and digital files. What
should I buy to accomplish a satisfactory upgrade to OS 10.3?
And how much should I budget for RAM, new hard drive and program?

I just paid $187.00 for 2 sticks of 512 to get a GiG of Memory for my
third pismo.. Got it from DMS, thats up a little bit from a year ago
but not too bad. You will really see a difference, especially if you
go to 10.3 with the ram

 www.DataMem.com
I do not work for them or anything like that but 6 orders and no
problems and fair shipping to Alaska works for me. Os 10 seems to be
a little picky sometimes when it comes to RAM so wherever you buy it
be sure of their sales policy, return policy, and customer install
policy. I do not like buying RAM second hand unless it's one of my
non critical computers.

Hard drive 5400 40 gig used to be IBM but now are Hitachi $150.00

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6336Item=HIT08K0637
You can save 20 to 30 bucks and get a smaller drive but the 5400
speed really helps, plus I like OWCs return policy. Meaning they are
pretty good about it. I have had some snags but OWC always made up
for any short comings..

You can go to eBay and find some lower prices, but when we
are talking small prices $180 for new RAM, on eBay probably $120 for
2 sticks. To me it's not worth the problems unless I know the seller,
if the ram is bad DMS is getting it back and sending some new sticks
like the next day no problem

Hard drives, if your fixing this pismo to be your main machine, what
me worry, no, I got the Hard Drive from OWC and their good about
returns.

Now if your talking about hard drives for my older books and DTs then
eBay can be a very good source LEM is the absolute best for price and
honest helpful folks

So for $337.00 you will have a rock and rolling sleek black Pismo
and when the upgrades that the rumor mills have been floating about
Newer techs upgrade past 900 that Pismo may just not be out of the
race yet. I think it's the best book Apple has ever made to date. So
spend the bucks, get a $30.00 to $50.00 fire wire enclosure for your
old hard rive. Make sure it is a powered enclosure fun and have no
worries. Now if the could only get more video ram, thats the real
weak spot for OS 10
Good Luck, lots of deals out there but these are two very good ones,
and OWC runs this very list another good reason to buy from them.

There are no PowerBook-specific Panther system disk. One set installs on any
Macintosh that supports it. So, your used set should do the trick.

I always partition my hard drive because it makes it easier to reformat a
system partition to install a new version (a thing I always did so far). So,
since I'm also getting a copy of OS 9, I have 3 partitions: 1 for the OS X
system partition, one for OS 9 system partition and the remainder for
everything else. I try to install most applications on the third partition
so in case I have to re-install OS X, I will have only a small number of
apps to re-install.

The Titanium seem to become very hot, so that seems normal.

OS X installs all components needed for any model of Macintosh that it
can run on. For Panther, this means all models from Blue White G3s
on up. I believe Apple specified built-in USB. You needn't worry
about missing anything - you're not.

Is it necessary to partition the 60 GB drive when I install drivers

It's not necessary to partition the drive; I keep both Classic and OS X
on the same volume in all of my system builds. I believe you bought a
15 Titanium G4, correct? If so, that computer WILL boot into OS 9 if
you want it to and if the drive had OS 9 drivers installed upon
initialization. BTW, I consider partitioning to be a religious matter.

The machine is beautiful and runs very fast in Panther--I am
overwhelmed by it. It also seems to get very hot on the bottom--Is
this normal and OK?
I have a 1 GHz Titanium and it gets hot too. I use a Podium CoolPad
stand to elevate the back end of the computer and put some airflow
between me and the bottom of it. Works like a champ. I believe the
Apple Stores sell them which is handy if you have one near you.

Re: WallStreet RAM upgrade question

2004-02-24 Thread Wayne Schneck
I was not able to get to 512 ram even with name brand ram in my
Wallstreet. This was probably due (in part) to the Powerlogix upgrade
card I also installed. Some readers have reported having the upgrade
card and the 512 ram, while others had the same problems. As far as I
know, no one really found the answer. I went back to 256 total ram and
the Wallstreet was fine.

Just make sure you can return the ram if for some reason it doesn't
work. Typically, any reputable company allows for return/exchange. Good
luck!

Re: Ebay G5 query

2004-02-24 Thread Wayne Schneck
There was a similar auction running here (US) on ebay for then the
latest G4 towers. If you one (and I think everyone who bid probably was
contacted by seller and given the info if you paid) you received the
email instructions to get a low cost, new G4.

One thing that was a red flag, they only accepted money order or
checks. So if you received your email and the info was bogus, you lost
your money.

Be careful of things to good to be true, especially Macintosh products
on ebay. I think I read that the Macintosh products (the powerbooks in
particular) were the leading scam products.

I believe the reason for one Low Profile is that a larger one won't fit

Ken
It's because a full sized SO-DIMM is too long to fit. The RAM slot
is too close to the edge of the daughter card, and longer RAM cards
won't fit in the small space provided. So-called low profile cards
are actually shorter (not thinner), and will fit in the space.

Two low profile cards will work fine. There is no difference
(electronically) between a low profile card and a full sized card.

Lombard Headphone Jack

2004-02-24 Thread Lynn Kendall
I love my PowerBook, but recently I've been having problems with the
headphone jack. The male end of the cord doesn't seem to make a full,
snug connection. If I press on it, sometimes I'll get full sound.
Otherwise it goes in and out.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Preferably cheap or free, since I'm not working
right now.

Probably a loose solder on the AC/Sound board. It will probably get worse
until you fix it.

Yes, they can both be low-profile, in fact I think that would give you
a little better cooling since another .75 inch of the processor can
breathe. I had two 256MB in my old Wallstreet 233, that RAM now resides
in a Pismo somewhere.

It's not necessary to partition the drive; I keep both Classic and OS X
on the same volume in all of my system builds. I believe you bought a
15 Titanium G4, correct? If so, that computer WILL boot into OS 9 if

Guys- thanks so very much for your time and information. I am set to go
now and glad to be part of this list.

A quick note if you plan on booting into OS9 - partition your drive and
place OS9 on the first partition. In 10.2.x, holding the d key would
have the computer boot into the OS it found on the first partition (in
this case OS9); holding the x key would have it search out and boot into
OS X.

Re: iBook and Airport

My girlfriend has a linksys--and runs windows on her network---
I searched for the router on my ibook airport. and bingo!!! what a
breeze--

at home--I connect my apple station to a dsl---and then let my airport
searches for it and found it also--just remember when connected via
dsl--when you turn on laptop--the dsl terminal searches for your isp---and
that is the one they will always look for--when the airport is hooked up to
dsl--it is has its own isp--and that is the one the dsl is looking for-so
you cant do both--its too confusing--but if the linksys works why connect
dsl to laptop ever ?

compactflash virtual memory

As an mobile OSX-user, I wonder if it would be a good idea to use a
fast (512MB, 10MB/s sustained read) formatted CompactFlash card
inserted into my PCMCIA-slot (incl. adaptor) as a drive strictly for
the use of Virtual Memory. Or is my my standard 4800rpm HD still a
better solution for Virtual Memory.

Will the use of CF speed up my system when I need more than 512MB?
Does anyone has some experience with this?
My Apple is a PB G4 17 1Ghz 512MB 60GB OSX.3.2

Thanks

PS: i can use the CF also for my photography...

Question Regarding Classic in Panther

2004-02-24 Thread Jason Cornfeld
Hello Everybody! I have a question. I have a Snow Ibook Dual USB 600MHZ
14 Inch. 20GB 640 Megs of ram. I like to play games on it but its kind
of a hassle to have to reboot into OS9 to get decent performance out of
my games. They play Great in OS9 (diable, Unreal) but if i play say
diablo in Panther, the sound kind of hesitates once in a while when
things are loading, and the graphics in Unreal are choppy when i play
them in osX any ideas on how to improve this performance? or am i just
SOL and deal with having to boot into os9 when i want good performance?

Cheers! and thanks in advance!

Jason

Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz for only $235

This is the link in question...

Appartently if your bid is sucessfull you'll get the
instructions on
how to
go about getting a G5 for peanuts.

Sounds way too dodgy to me, but I just wondered if
anyone out there had
seen
it and proceeded.

I'll make the same deal for 1/2 the price!
The ebay offer is:
This auction is for the information on how to get
your Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz for only $235 (plus
shipping).
I'll provide the information on how you can rob
someone for even less than $235 (plus shipping)..

You're probably SOL for Unreal and will need to boot into OS 9 to play it.
Don't forget that Classic is an emulation, it's not like when you boot into
OS 9 so it will never be as fast as booting in 9.

As for Diablo, I don't know. Blizzard has released an OS X version of Diablo
II which plays quite decently on my Pismo 500MHz, although I have to use
software-rendering mode to get a decent performance, as there are some
problems with their OpenGL OS X version...

brute force adj.: Describes a primitive programming style, one in which the
programmer relies on the computer's processing power instead of using his or

brute-force programs are written in a heavyhanded, tedious way, full of
repetition and devoid of any elegance or useful abstraction (see also brute

How about some more info, like what you're planing to do with this
software, what your requirements are, etc. Home use, professional use,
etc.?

I have minimal needs for such a program, and PS Elements 2.0 is more
than sufficient for minor touch-up, etc.

PhotoShop, no matter what version, gives you much more control over your

If you want a discussion, I'm afraid you'll have to put forth more of
an effort than that. How are we to know what you need/want to do with
this software ?

loose solder on AC/Sound board

2004-02-24 Thread Dennis Reeder
Laurent:

I have the same problem on my Pismo. So how difficult is it to get to
the AC/Sound board and resolder the connection? Tips, cautions,
warnings? Can I get to the board thru the keyboard or would I have to
crack open the Pismo case? Is that hard to do?
Tricky? Easy? Thanks.

It will probably get
worse
until you fix it.

Re: loose solder on AC/Sound board

2004-02-24 Thread Paul Nicholson
I resoldered the Power connection on my WallStreet. It was easy to do.
You have to take the case apart. It was a couple of years ago and I've
forgotten where the screws are. Do a Google serach, you'll likely find
instructions for getting the case apart.

Have you soldered before? I would not advise if for the mechanically
inept, but if you have reasonable skills you should be able to handle
it.

Paul.
