Help! Help! Lombard won't boot.
Symptoms The prohibitory sign shows up on startup and it stay that way. I've done all I've could based on the apple support docs eg: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464 But nothing works. Zapping the NVRAM/PRAM didn't change the situation at all. I can't get the CDROM tray to open either (machine ignores the F12 key or the tray release button). Failed to boot the machine off an external USB CDR drive. Single user or verbose mode startup keystrokes won't work. The machine doesn't seem to respond to anything but the command-option-delete keystrokes or the reset button in the back. All trouble shooting was done without any additional external devices (unless they were needed like the external keyboard/mouse or CDR or USB drives). When I last used the powerbook, it was working fine. I shut it down as normal for the end of day. When I started it up thhe day after, It got stuck on start up. About my Lombard: Its a 333 MHz (bronze keyboard) G3 powerbook (1999). The machine had a fresh (format and install) of Panther 10.3.2. The drive was zeroed during formating for the install (via Panther's disk utility). I was starting up the machine with the idea of running the latest update (Security Update 2004-02-23 for Panther Client ) when the problem happened. The machine hasn't had any hardware upgrades/additions for the past 2 years. No PCI cards or processor upgrades have been used on this machine. Until an odd keyboard problem a month ago, it was functioning flawlessly. The keyboard problem was that the tab, backspace, enter, and left arrow keys were needing a lot of hard pounding to work. The fresh Panther install was an attempt to figure out if the problem was a software issue. Despite the fresh install the problem persisted. It wasn't a big prob since I was using an external USB keyboard and mouse. I was planning to buy a new keyboard. It had a RAM upgrade to 384MB when OS 10.1 came out. The original 4GB drive was replaced with a 20GB drive. All these components have worked without a problem. Software/OS customizations. 1. I had enabled the file vault feature for my home directory. As a result on some shut downs/ logouts the machine wanted to recover unused disk space. A separate password is used in addition to to the account password for filevault. 2. I had installed Fink ( http://fink.sourceforge.net/ ) and Fink Commander, (http://finkcommander.sourceforge.net/) its GUI front end. Fink lets you compile open source applications to run on OSX either on X11 or command line. I had got GIMP (www.gimp.org) to install and running quite well with it. I bring this up because Apple support documents on the web claim that some startup problem are due to key directories being moved. And it tempting to think that Fink messed around with some system files. One of the key features of Fink is that its installation approach is to avoid messing around with OS X's system files. According to the Fink FAQ the whole fink setup can by removed by deleting just one directory. Further more, the machine had been running fine with fink installed. 3. Xcode tools components needed for fink were installed. I did this via the xcode installer's custom install options. 4. The root password is enabled on the machine. All sharing/directory services have been switched off http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=32478 since I don't use them. (there was a security hue and cry about this a while back). For backups I cloned the entire hard drive onto a external USB drive using carbon copy cloner after running permission checks from a default user account. (I restored all my documents after the fresh install this way). Unfortunately, the cloned drive exists as a dmg file. As I feared, I was not able to start up the machine off the external drive. Luckily I got my key files backedup on a remote unix shell account as text file. Not sure what more I can do other than going to the local Apple shop. I can't recall the last time when my mac unusable like this. I think my applecare has expired. I'm stuck using a XP box :( If anyone has any insights/wisdom about this problem, I'd be ahppy to read them. iBook screen mobility question
I saw something on eBay made by Macally that looks like a plastic holder for iBooks and PowerBooks that holds the computer up in the air so that it cools nicely. The one I saw does not raise the computer a few inches but holds the computer almost vertical. The picture showed an iBook in it with the CPU section vertical facing the user and the screen opened up so that it is almost parallel to the CPU. I have never opened my new iBook any further than it takes to see the screen. How far can they be safely opened??? I looked through the iBook literature for a picture showing the limits of mobility of the screen but there aren't any. M -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: AppleCare Question
I have had Applecare on both my previous macs and will be buying it for my Powerbook in March. With Applecare, you get a 2 year extension on your warranty to bring it to a total of 3 years and this includes 3 years of phone support. When you first buy a Mac, you get 90 days of what they call complementary phone support. In the box - you normally get next to nothing. Just a registration sheet and usually a disk with a light version of Techtools pro. You're right - it is a lot of money but it has always been well worth it to me as both my computers needed extensive repairs which would have cost far more than the cost that I paid for the Applecare warranty. To find out how much further it will open, just gently continue to push the screen back until you meet resistance. You won't damage it doing this as long as you don't force it beyond that point. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: AppleCare Question
The Applecare service is definitely well worth the money and one additional benefit that I forgot to mention in my initial response was that it can be a great selling point when you are attempting to sell your used Mac 2 years from now. If you still have 6-12 months (or more) of Applecare left, it can be transferred to the new owner so they have more peace of mind should they end up with a problem two days after they get it home. I sold my last iMac with 6 months of Applecare remaining and got a very good price on it. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Yup, when you download mail there is one sound, and if you check mail and there is none, you get another. The sounds are subtle, and rather cool. Re: Wierd noise in Mail
Speaking of Mail, it is a terrific program. I'm a long-time Windows user and really do like Outlook 98/2000/XP for Windows. When I bought my PB last week, of course I added Office v.X and imported (rather difficult from Outlook) everything into Entourage. Well I also started playing with Mail (I use Panther) and after a few days, liked it so much that Entourage is now used for my junk account and I use Mail for work, school and personal. There are two primary reasons. First, Mail uses the Mac OSX address book instead of its own contact database. This is important, because with iSync for my Palm, I keep my email addresses current with my Palm and email client, and Entourage, to my knowledge, cannot sync with a Palm device. Second, I really like the junk filtering in Mail. Yes, Entourage has it too, but in Mail it is much easier to access and control. As an added bonus, the program is just more Mac-Like, which I guess is to be expected. I've only been back on the Mac for a week and a half, but already I've become addicted to a better computing experience. Re: Blown bridgeboard/chipset
Hi I have blown a chipset on my external firewire enclosure. Do you know where I ca get a replacement? I had a couple of old SCSI enclosures and after buying a FW enclosure noticed it was exactly the same thing, except one had a FW board the other a SCSI. So off to the web I went searching Long story short, its cheaper to buy a new enclosure than to buy a single bridge board. Now obviously the folks who sell enclosures are getting them cheap, but it seems no one is selling the boards cheaply. So just look for another case would be my not particularly helpful suggestion. Wall Street Video Problem
This sounds what bedeviled my G3/250 WS which I bought in June 1998. The problem had exhibited itself by Jan 2000. I only found out later that Apple would repair this at their expense, including overnight shipping to/from Dallas (they provide the box). Perhaps the offer is still valid (I didn't have Apple Care). I think the problem was a twisted video cable on 13.3 screens only. My iBook has a modem but my BW does not. I thought that I could just check internet sharing on the iBook and get the BW to connect through the iBook. However, I can't get it to work. The BW picks up an IP address but I can't access the internet. Both computers are running 10.2.8. I have tried both static and dynamic IP addresses. What am I missing? Actually I now see I'm backwards in that it's a low profile, which of course means it would work in both, so does that means we could have two 512s and have a wallstreet recognize both? Re: AppleCare Question
With desktops, well, there it's a toss-up. In my experience (non Powerbook) Macs either break right away (within the 1 year warrantee), or don't do so for years and years, and things that do break are reasonably cheap to replace (primarily HDD's and optical drives). This is not completely correct. The repairs can be very expensive. I bought Applecare on both of my iMacs. Both required costly repairs just shortly after the end of the standard 1 year warranty. In fact, on the first one - I bought Applecare just days before the end of the 1st year. 2 weeks later, smoke started pouring out the back of the computer and it required several hundred dollars worth of repairs and parts, not to mention labour. The Applecare cost me $149.00 CDN. The repairs/labour were $980.00. If you want peace of mind, and aren't handy fixing things yourself, AppleCare is more valuable. As for getting Applecare on your PB overseas, it may be problematic, but the PB was purchased here it should be covered. It could be problematic in a more remote area but Korea - I'm pretty sure he would have access to Applecare warranty service there. Still, asking is the best way to find out. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Memory for Wallstreet
Hi, Folks! Please forgive my intrusion into this conversation. I've been receiving contradictory opinions about whether I can use a matched pair of low profile OEM 256MB SODIMMs from a Titanium G4 in a Wallstreet 233, and have them recognized and be usable as 512 MB of ram by that machine. Their speed is 133MHz, and I believe the Wallstreet's bus is either 66 or 100MHz. I've heard from some that these Hynix sodimms should clock down to 100MHz and work fine, and by others that the'll blow up the Wallstreet or that the Wallstreet has a 66MHz bus and that the chips won't work at all. Can you either shed some light on this or direct me to a reliable source for this information? Thank you! Re: [OT] Problem accessing email behind firewall
Laurent proclaimed: Thanks, Gavin! I tried getting to the IP addresses directly, but they must have done something because they are also blocked. I'll see if I could use VNC, but I doubt it will work. If you know Fannie Mae, you understand that they are very sensitive to the outside world and nothing, absolutely nothing should disrupt their activities. I think that's why they are so picky about outside Internet access... -Laurent. All is not (yet) lost. I'm not 100% sure on this since I run linux OpenBSD @ home - not OS X yet... They should be very similar. You can move ssh to a different port from the default 22 (or an additional port to) -either by changing the sshd startup script or editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Then, for example, ssh -p newPort -l myloginname -L 8025:localhost:25 myTunnelBox -L 8080:localhost:3128 myTunnelBox etc etc What this does is as most eloquently described before by Gavin. You should be able to find one free port (e.g. 21 shouldn't be open to the wide world as ftp isn't secure). If feeling paranoid, you can can set your firewall to ONLY accept incoming on port 21 for ssh if coming from certain 'known valid' ip addresses. Port 3128 is for web access where you like if you are running a proxy such as 'squid'. By setting your browser to use a proxy for non-internal webpages (localhost:8080), you effectively 'pull' the web pages from the external server and then send them encrypted through the ssh tunnel to you on the 'inside'. -C may also improve throughput. The best ports to pick after 22 is in the available non-privileged range. There are ways of finding open ports (e.g. nmap) - talk to you offline if you want more help. A warning about verizon - I was with them for a while but they changed their TermsConditions - see http://www.verizon.net/policies/vzcom/tos_popup.asp 3.6 If you subscribe to DSL Service: ... E.
