It should work if it's a Type I or Type II PC card. The Mac requires
OHCI compliancy which that card has. Chances are that it will work
with the Apple OS FireWire drivers in OS 8.6-9.2.2. But you may have
problems using it with OS X.

FWIW you might want to check out the IBM cardbus (was $26 at Computer

iBook Slowdown...

2004-06-04 Thread michael_shaw

My own 1-GHz iBook is absolutely no problem but my daughter is visiting friends and
she emailed me to ask about an iBook there (new 12 iBook from about 7 months ago)
that is so S-L-O-W that there is a lapse of three or four seconds before commands are
recognised in the Finder. Windows are very slow to open and close and the computer
waits before acting out every Finder command.

It is running OS 10.2.8. I have no idea if keyboard commands and typing are slow to
act and appear as well.

What would cause this ??

Any ideas ??

Is it worth the effort to try to repair or track down corrupted fonts if that is a
problem, or should she just wipe and re-install the system to rule out software
issues??

Nope, I didn't try OpenFirmware commands.

Try:

reset-all.

G-Books: Wallstreet PC Internet Access? Help!

2004-06-04 Thread anazario
Hello,

I don't want to give up my G3 wallstreet (running on OS 9.1 or 9.2.) so I
need a little help. I'm moving in with my partner and he has a PC and I
have my Mac. There is no DSL in the area and so we are going to go for
cable Modem access. But in order to share a single modem and save $ we
apparently have to get a router (The cable company offers no support and
would rather charge us for two separate connections). Has anyone done this
with a PC and an aging Mac? Is it possible? How does one do it? Tools?
Advice? Router recommendations? Help! Please! I don't want to cave to
pressure and give up my Mac.

Also No USB ports. How do I add functioning USB ports?

While I am at it, I was thinking of upgrading and speeding up my little
wallstreet friend. How difficult and expensive is this to do? Can a non
techie do this without going insane? Or if I take it to someone to do it
for me what is a reasonable amount to spend?

Thanks,
Athena

Yes, and it is as easy as plugging the cable into the laptop! PLEASE DO NOT
allow the cable company to rip U off; they surely WILL charge you for two
seperate connections(!) when all you need is a router, which are like $20-$30 on
Ebay for the 802.11b variety!

I use a PC and a Mac at home w/ my cable modem. I have a router that has the
option of connecting via a rj-45 ethernet cable or a USB cable; I use the
rj-45. Since allI need is to provide internet access to both, and no networking or
anything like that, I simply plug two eithernet cables into the router, and
hook the other ends to each computer. All that is left is setting the software
in each to use the connection, and voila!

Now also, since you have a laptop AND because they are cheap these days, you
may want to opt for a router that can provide wireless access also. I use a
Speedstream 802.11b wireless router, that also has three wired ethernet ports.
My PC desktop and 7600/G3 500mhz use the wired ports, and my laptops (wife=PC;
me=P'Books) and color classic use the wireless.

Also No USB ports. How do I add functioning USB ports?

Well, you can add USB ports to a Wallstreet with a PCMCIA card; there are
several makes out there But if your router has the ability to use RJ-45
ethernet cables, there would be no need, for cable modem access, at least.

WiFi on Old PowerBooks -- Yes You Can!!

2004-06-04 Thread Bob
I realize this is a G3 list and that there's another list for pre-G3
PowerBook list. However some on this list may have pre-G3 'books in
the closet. Or you may have friends or relatives with older units.
The following information might take these old PBs out of the dust
bunnies and back into useful service. If this is rehashed news on the
list, I apologize.

Normally people think of wireless communication (i.e. IEEE803.11b/g
or Airport) in terms of G3 PowerBooks and newer. But those of you
that have 3400, 1400, even 5300 or 190 PowerBooks, you can utilize
current technology with your legacy units.

The following is a URL giving you step-by-step instructions on how to
get things up and running, plus links to find practically everything
you need to do it.

http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

I hope this proves useful to some of you.

Re: ??? Wallstreet battery replacement cells ???

Larry, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

Is it possible to replace the battery cells in a PowerBook Wallstreet
battery ?

I live in Sweden so links for US shops won't do much, it's the info
I'm after.

I was in contact with Batterilagret or something in Göteborg 2 years ago
and they wanted 2800 SEK (maybe $350) for replacing the battery package
inside. A new Apple battery then was 1800 SEK.
In the end I got a fresh battery, almost new for 350 SEK ($43 or
something like that). I sold it with my WS I. I also sold the crashed one
for 50 SEK, so maybe someone out there know more about refurbishing
batteries than I do (which is not that much really).

Point then is that there are fresh batteries out there, if you advert at
Swedish sites and ask for the possibility to use the battery for one day
or so and return if it's a dodo. Most Mac users are very honest people I
think, especially so with Pro people who make their living out of their
machines and the work they do on them.

the SMTP server smtp.mac.mail can not be used, would I like to
Jim,
I'm confused about the .mac bit, but the important bit to check out is
if your smtp is working fine. My guess is that you're normally using
mindspring and hence sending to a server such as mail.mindspring.com.

Problem #1 is most ISP's disable smtp for traffic not originating nor
terminating in their domain for anti-spam reasons. Further, it is not
impossible that the library has also disabled outgoing smtp.

The easy way to check the latter is to open a terminal window and try
telnet my-smtp-server-ip 25
if it times out, you know it is being blocked somewhere. If not, try
the following commands
helo there
mail from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
rcpt to: your other email address
data
Subject: Just Testing
EOM
.

This will indicate if you can send or not. If you get an error message
after the rcpt to: command, that means the isp is not relaying.

If any of the above fail, then the easy workarounds are as follows:
- Can you use a webmail service?
- Can you (perhaps through vpn/ssh etc) use a work or similar account
from the 'inside'
- Services such as fastmail.fm (min $14 for member access) will let you
use their smtp server with authentication. Fastmail also lets you use
other ports if 25 is blocked.

Another aspect,

IMHO, Mac OS X 10.3.x with XPostFacto3 ( I use the a14 version) works
much better on at least the Wallstreet II (PDQ) than do Jaguar. The only
thing that doesn't work for me is sound going in, which probably can be
solved with a new PCMCIA soundcard with a specific sound driver for that
hardware, but I haven't really tried that.
I run a PCMCIA airport card (Open source driver) trough the PCMCIA, so I
have none of the mentioned XPF FAQ problems regarding this port. Same
goes for sleep, which is working perfectly.

So, while Panther may set you off another $60 or so second hand, IMO it
is worth that.

I'm seem to be leaving the WS II finally after 2 years, going to a
PowerBook G4 instead. Which is good as I suppose Tiger will be difficult
to support on the WS. But so did Panther look from the outset.

I'm seem to be leaving the WS II finally after 2 years, going to a
PowerBook G4 instead. Which is good as I suppose Tiger will be
difficult
to support on the WS. But so did Panther look from the outset.

Re: ...Panther Mail and SMTP servers...

2004-06-04 Thread Jim Scolman
Hi Pete, thanks for your information. The .mac bit is the
SMTP server that my system is using FROM the Library WiFi net. I DO
NOT have that SMTP server configured anywhere in my system, and cannot
add the correct SMTP servers that work fine from my dialup at home. I
will try your tests at the Library, and at home..the tech at the
Library says the outgoing mail works from public wireless machines at
the Library, so he says mine should work Thanks again. Jim.

On the WiFi net at
the Library I can receive mail from both accounts just fine but when
I send(and the Library says I should be able to) I get the message
that the SMTP server smtp.mac.mail can not be used, would I
like to
Jim,
I'm confused about the .mac bit, but the important bit to check out is
if your smtp is working fine. My guess is that you're normally using
mindspring and hence sending to a server such as mail.mindspring.com.

Problem #1 is most ISP's disable smtp for traffic not originating nor
terminating in their domain for anti-spam reasons. Further, it is not
impossible that the library has also disabled outgoing smtp.

The easy way to check the latter is to open a terminal window and try
telnet my-smtp-server-ip 25
if it times out, you know it is being blocked somewhere. If not, try
the following commands
helo there
mail from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
rcpt to: your other email address
data
Subject: Just Testing
EOM
.

This will indicate if you can send or not. If you get an error
message after the rcpt to: command, that means the isp is not
relaying.

If any of the above fail, then the easy workarounds are as follows:
- Can you use a webmail service?
- Can you (perhaps through vpn/ssh etc) use a work or similar account
from the 'inside'
- Services such as fastmail.fm (min $14 for member access) will let
you use their smtp server with authentication. Fastmail also lets you
use other ports if 25 is blocked.

HTH
Pete.

Wallstreet Wavelan Woes

2004-06-04 Thread Tom Zahm
Hi.

My WS has crashed several times in the last year or two. It seems to have always been
associated with ejecting my Wavelan card, or with switching from a Wavelan-based lan
to a wired lan.

Before I use it again, I was wondering if there were better alternatives to the
WirelessDriver on SourceForge.

TIA

Cordially,
Tom Zahm

Re: G-Books: Wallstreet PC Internet Access? Help!

Help! Please! I don't want to cave to
pressure and give up my Mac.

snip
Now also, since you have a laptop AND because they are cheap these days, you
may want to opt for a router that can provide wireless access also.

I agree wholeheartedly. Unless you want either a.) Ethernet wires
strung all over the place; or b.) to use both computers in the same
basic location, wireless is the way to go. You can pick up a WiFi
(wireless) PC card for your Wallstreet in the $30 - $60 range. I
personally prefer a Mac-compatible brand, but lots of users are using
different brands.

Of course, your wireless router will be more expensive than a wired
router, but the roaming capability is well worth the extra cost IMHO.
Not only is wireless the wave of the future, but also you will
currently be able to use your computer to log on to the Net at
places like Starbucks, libraries, college campuses, Barns Noble and
airports etc (though usually for a daily fee); even at other friends
who have a WiFi setup.

Also No USB ports. How do I add functioning USB ports?

Well, you can add USB ports to a Wallstreet with a PCMCIA card; there are
several makes out there But if your router has the ability to use RJ-45
ethernet cables, there would be no need, for cable modem access, at least.

Maybe the OP wants USB for a printer or printer-sharing. Or a USB
mouse or keyboard. There are lots of reasons to want USB.

Go for it. Your Wallstreet will serve you well if you get the right
kind of add-ons.

Good Luck,

Bob

I have an Orinoco Gold, which is supposed to be basically the same card.
I use the Apple Airport drivers/utilities in a WS. The same card works in
my 1400 with version 7.2 of the
Orinoco software. I don't recall any crashes, unless I try to eject the
card from the 1400 without shutting down. The 1400 runs OS 9.1 and the
Wallstreet runs OS 9.2.2
