Re: How to connect Airport disabled Pismo to router wirelessly
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 2004 14:54:08 +0100 Subject: How to connect Airport disabled Pismo to router wirelessly From: muir mackean [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi everyone - I have recently upgraded to broadband (in the UK) and my ISP supplied me with a Speedtouch 570 wireless router and a Speedtouch 110 wireless card to connect my Pismo (400mhz, OSX Panther, 320 MBRAM, 40 GBHD) to the internet. Turns out the 110 card is incompatible with Mac, and my Pismo has an unspecified hardware fault which prevents it from recognising an Airport card (diagnosed by local Apple store, almost certainly uneconomical to rectify). Am finding it very difficult to find alternative kit to connect the Pismo to the Speedtouch wirelessly - you mention Macs and everyone starts humming and hawing. Can anyone out there help or suggest anything ? Many thanks Muir MacKean You might try looking at http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/ to see which cards are supported by this free open-source driver. I currently have a WaveLAN Gold which I can use outside my TiBook's 30-ft Airport range, it works fine with this driver. In fact you might try the driver with your card to see if it works first. --- JSH TiBook -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: RAM on WS Pismo
macnifico, [EMAIL PROTECTED] asked: Is the RAM on the Wallstreet and the Pismo the same and interchangeable? Memory from a Pismo could work in Wallstreet if of the right density (if not the full RAM space may not be able to address). Memory from a Wallstreet should not work in Pismo if it's PC-66, but if it's PC-100 or faster it should work . -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Lombard CPU going Bad?
I have had a used 333 Lombard for about a year now, with a variety of upgrades such as a new HD, DVD/CD-RW drive, RAM, etc... I am starting to get lock-ups under OS X 10.3, multiple times a day. It really seems to be linked to when I peg the CPU at 100% for a period of time running something like a big compile project. However, it isn't a heat issue either. Any possibilities that could be present? Be aware that I don't have Apple's hardware diagnostics CD, and I don't currently have access to TechTool to do a hardware diagnosis either. Anyone encounter this problem as well, and found the cause? I am starting to get really annoyed attempting to do compile work for people on this laptop and having to restart every few files or so. I had similar problems with my 400mhz Lombard. i downgraded from 512Mb memory by swa[[ing the upper 256 for a 128 and now it's rock solid Hope this helps -- Robert AOL IM wingnut022074 There are only two ways to live your life. Pismo Screen Distress
My Pismo 400 (Airport card, extra RAM, no other modifications) has been doing wonderfully until a few months ago. Now, something's loose in the innards. If I even slightly jostle it (even a gentle rotation) or move the screen to adjust the angle - the whole thing seems to freeze. The HD keeps spinning, but the cursor won't move. I managed to duplicate this failure during login and the small spinning fan/wheel (not the beachball) will abruptly freeze and then - with slight motion - resume spinning but picking up in a nonadjacent place, as though it had been spinning anyway, and that info wasn't going to the screen. My assumption: a hardware problem with respect to info going to the screen. I took the whole thing apart, replaced the thin little invertor board, removed the screen intact from the back and then reattached it - trying to make sure that all connections were intact. LESS problem, but still a delicate critter, but no problem while sitting static on the desk. I just can't pick it up. Does this ring a bell? without running it through the Apple folks (multiple hundreds for repair, they think) is this something where I can replace a simple cable or piece myself? I don't have a problem taking the whole thing apart to get to the evilness. (p.s. Could you take the name calling flame wars to private communication. No one is impressed or even cares, trust me.) Thermal Paste Rules!
WOW! I picked up a PowerLogix Blue Chip/WS 466 for my Wallstreet 233MHz/512kB recently. (A _very_ nice upgrade, by the way. The Wallstreet now gives my Pismo 500 a run for it's money on most tasks.) It didn't come with it's original heat sink disk, so I transplanted one from the 233's CPU. Well, the thing was running at a hot 181F last night, and I was a little concerned that the heatsink wasn't making good contact with the CPU. So I went out and picked up some thermal grease (Arctic Silver 5, if that means anything to you). After applying the compound, my Wallstreet/466 is now running at a cool 131F! Big improvement! Given the recent conversation on overheating PowerBooks, I thought you all might like that tip. Scrape off (and carefully clean away) whatever is left of the original thermal grease and apply some new stuff. It makes a HUGE difference in CPU temperatures.
