Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-16 Thread Hal
It's called "residual revenue".
Apple, like any company that is only going to sell you a major product
every few years, needs to insure that they can make money on a regular
basis. It's the same reason Microsoft updates Office every 2 years and
makes just enough changes that if one person in your office gets the
new version, everyone has to upgrade...

Seriously though, I've been impressed enough with the last 2 versions
to pay retail for them... 10.2 and 10.3 have been pretty major
upgrades. I hope 10.4 is as good.

Just my $0.02.

I don't think Apple has made any official statements on the cost of
Tiger but it is a safe bet that the only people who get it for free are
those who buy a new Mac just before Tiger is released. The past two
upgrades have been $129 and Tiger's 150 new features will probably cost
us another $129-$150.

If you don't have pressing needs for other necessities (school, health
care, gym membership, rent, etc.), I'd say buying a used Clamshell
iBook is just as worthwhile as collecting anything for pleasure.
They're striking in design and are bound to be classic collectibles. If
it's "fun money" that you'd otherwise spend on entertainment, I say "go
for it!" So far, you can be sure that someone will at least want to buy
the Clamshell if you decide to give it up some day and resell it.

Clamshells will be less roadworthy as programs and the internet become
more demanding for better graphics cards and processor speeds BUT, you
might find legacy programs that you can run indefinitely on them. (OS 9
and OS X still work well on the Clamshell.)

Some folks keep their older Clamshell iBooks in service as fax
machines and many folks here point out that they prefer the Clamshell
for typing/writing because the design is supremely ergonomic for a
laptop. Great keyboard!

If you hunt on ebay, you'll find an occasional bargain for a Clamshell.
Take care with buying one. Think: dead pixels or not? Battery life?
Power source ok? Hinges?

There are a number of places out there where you can get a Clamshell
upgraded with new media drives, bigger hard drives, or simply have them
serviced when in need. This can extend the life of one. (e.g., Wegener
media)Check out lowendmac for resources and of course, the good folks
here can make suggestions and give advice.

You could write your first novel or screenplay on one! :)
Beware, the coolest of the Clamshells, the Key Lime, can be expensive.
I have , however, seen the 366 MHz model sell at a bargain once or
twice on ebay.

Congrats on your new 'Book!!!

what to do what to do..

2004-07-16 Thread Joshua Braddock
I realized that I have been on this list for about a year now, and I
didn't even have a "g" based processor powered laptop. Well I finally
got one, a 14 inch iBook. Well I love this thing, and I am really
enjoying OS X. Even though I have been having problems with, but
Applecare has helped me out a lot! I am really pleased with this
computer. I know that doesn't amount much coming from a 17 year old,
but. Anyways, what I was wondering is, why does OS X sometimes "crash"
the programs I use that have a "informative" dialog, like "Do you want
to save" etc? That is the problem I have been having, and I created a
new user account, and it seems to only happen every once and a while.
But, it doesn't really bother me now. The other thing I was going to
ask is, if I save my money should I get a clam shell iBook. I would
only want one just to have one. but.. anyways, I am rambling.. I am
gonna go now.. LOL hrmm.. ~Joshua Braddock

Re: annoying desktop file

2004-07-16 Thread Alejandro
Sometimes is more simple than you can think.
Try this:
- Make a new folder or duplicate other file.
- Rename it as the damaged one.
- Place it on the same location.
- The System will ask you about replacing that item.
- Once replaced, trash the new one.

Hope that helps.

Try renaming it, restarting then trashing it.

Wireless Networking Help Available

2004-07-16 Thread Bob
Greetings,
We see a lot of WiFi questions on this list. I was reminded today
about a resource that I had completely forgotten about. It should
help anyone trying to figure out what to buy, how to set it up, how
to work through post-setup problems, even wireless security issues.

"Take Control of Your AirPort Network " is in PDF format and very
low-cost. Just about everything that Adam Engst and/or TidBITS offers
is quality stuff.

Take a look at:

I would disagree here... Since I started with dial-up in 1997 I always
got the exact maximum speed as given in the contract (that's why I
commented on this, maybe I should've been more specific). Right now I
have promised half a megabit from my DSL modem, and I indeed can get
60something KBps. When I was working for an ISP company earlier, we
learnt the lesson very quickly and ALWAYS informed customers about the
realistic speeds they would get from a given connection... otherwise
things got rather nasty rather quick.

Consider yourself lucky. As you know, the overall connection speed
varies to where the customer lives, the type of connectivity, etc.
I've been promised "up to" 3M down and 384k up. My actual connection
is usually 1.2M down and only 128K up. Luckily, I'm one of the few
customers that understands the importance of those two key words in my
contract. . ."up to". :)

David Freels
David,
I have the current software from Smith Micro. Quicklink Moble works
best under Jaguar, but on Panther it has a lot of problems. Panther
doesn't really need the software to work. There are two ways to
connect with your bluetooth phone; depending on your wireless service.
I have Cingular and they have what is called Wireless Internet and
Wireless Internet Express. The latter connects you online via a phone
number. You cell will automatically dial said number and you are
online. This is a VERY slow connection, depending on the time you are
connected. A simple website i.e., Yahoo! for example can take as long
as FIVE minutes to load. . .even with Safari. The Express connection
uses the GPRS type of connectivity, which is the same used to surf the
web via the cell phone itself. This connection is a little faster, but
not much. Most cell phone companies charge on a per kilobyte basis for
GPRS while the slower connection comes out of your minutes. Cingular
for example charges $0.04 a kilobyte. While this may not sound like
much, just checking web-based email can add up. I checked my Excite
email the other day via GPRS and the total was $5.67. Just for
checking email from one site. The slower connection is cheaper, but
don't use it unless you have a lot of time on your hands. The best way
to connect wirelessly in my opinion is via an Airport card. This of
course isn't a good choice if you aren't within range of a free WiFi
hotspot. I used the Smith Micro software when I needed to get online
in areas of construction, where there isn't any other way to connect.
So to answer your question, it works. . .it's just slow. . .slower than
56K. If that's not a problem, download the software, pair your phone
for bluetooth connectivity (good to do BEFORE installing software), and
surf the web. If you have Panther, check the network settings, click
on locations, and look for wireless device. The setup assistant will
walk you through this as well after you've paired your phone. I'm
kinda' pissed that Panther doesn't really need the software. I feel
like I wasted the money on it. It's still installed in my hard drive,
but I never use it anymore. Oh well. . .live and learn.

Hope this helps,
Zoltan

transferring iTunes between computers

2004-07-16 Thread Claire Hart
I can't remember if I asked this question of this list or the G-book
list, so I'll post it both places. I had asked if there was a way to
transfer my iTunes collection from the iMac to the Powerbook. Someone
said to use iSync. I tried iSync through .mac, and it synced iCal,
Address Book, and something else, but not iPhoto or iTunes.

Today, rather than going through iTunes, my son opened the Music folder
from the Finder window. From there, he went to iTunes > iTunes Music.
We tried to connect by crossover cable, but I was so paranoid of
messing something up two days before going out of town that I was leary
of his changing IP addresses, computer names, etc. However, I thought
that since he found the files to the songs, we could possibly move them
as files. (Excuse me if this is a no-brainer to most of you.) I
dragged the folders onto my FireWire external HD and copied them there.
Then I plugged the same FW HD to the Powerbook and dragged them into
the same Music > iTunes > iTunes folder, but when I opened iTunes, the
songs didn't show up in my iTunes Library. Out of frustration, I
dragged the same folders from the FW HD right onto the open iTunes
window with the Library showing, and all 460 items began to fill in!
They work!

Incidentally, yesterday I transferred all 760 photos using my digital
camera, 60 photos at a time. I possibly could have transferred them
the same way I transferred my iTunes.

2004-07-16 Thread Marcin Wichary
True enough; but you're probably not going to get the full speed your
cable/dsl company promises you either. ;)
I would disagree here... Since I started with dial-up in 1997 I always
got the exact maximum speed as given in the contract (that's why I
commented on this, maybe I should've been more specific). Right now I
have promised half a megabit from my DSL modem, and I indeed can get
60something KBps. When I was working for an ISP company earlier, we
learnt the lesson very quickly and ALWAYS informed customers about the
realistic speeds they would get from a given connection... otherwise
things got rather nasty rather quick.

www via Quicklink Mobile?

2004-07-16 Thread David Freels
Does anyone have experience using Quicklink Mobile to access the Internet via
Bluetoothed cell phones and a mac?

See
http://www.smithmicro.com/default.tpl?cart=10899955452231103&group=product_full&\
sku=QLMMAKEE

The software supports many phones including Sony Ericsson T616. Has anyone had
experience with this?

How about upgrading to a Sony Ericsson T637 from T616? Does it still work?

Is there other cell/Powerbook connectivity software besides Quicklink?

Thanks.

No, it's just faster.
Many, but not all USB 2.0 devices are backwards compatible with 1.1.
I am assuming my Wallstreet has USB 1.1. I also feel safe in guessing
that a USB 2.0-equipped computer can use older USB stuff. If I ever
need to do so, can my Wallstreet use USB 2.0 products w/ some adapter
or something?
No, there is no solution, afaik, for USB 2.0 support on a Wallstreet.
You would be better off finding Firewire versions of these peripherals
and getting a firewire card.

For a iMac, or other computer which does not have a PC Card slot or Airport
