Yes, you are ;-)
IMHO, the 180 is not worth much more than $25. The 3500 maybe $150. At
least, that's what I would pay. What did you see for $2000 on eBay?
I saw the same listing for a Powerbook 180 for $2000. There were no
bids, that was just his asking price. I have one myself, and it's
probably worth in the $25-50 range, assuming it works and has a
battery. I just keep mine around in case I want to play some really old
games...

The 3500c is a bit different. Those can go anywhere from $100-300 on
eBay, as they're still somewhat useful. It won't run OSX, but you can
still get online, play Wolfenstein 3D, etc.

Just my $0.02.

The Macally (1.1) USB card is flat and has a 2-port dongle. It fits
under any of my other PC cards. Although it's not being manufactured
any longer, you ought to be able to come across a used one for $30 or
so.

I hate dongles. They get lost, come lose, break, etc.
That figured strongly in my card choice

The 333 Lombard shipped without a hardware decoder on the logic board.

The are DVD drives for Wallstreets, not common, they shipped with the 300MHz
version and as a optional extra.

Re: iPod Question (OT)

I use mine pretty often with a cheap cassette interface in both my
cars; I'm sure it isn't ideal, but it sounds as good as a radio station
does in the car and is mighty easy to use and move. I think it was
about $10 at Radio Shack---it plugs into the headphone jack on the iPod
and stuffs into the cassette slot in the car radio.

No partitioning is *required*. Depending on type of use, however, you may
*want* to partition. I cetainly do. If, for example, you need to reinsatll
the OS or reformat that drive, *only* that partition would have to be
dealt with.

For example, do you plan/want to: Boot into OS 9 (if permittable); Use
Photoshop (or another app which desires scratch disk space); keep your
downloads separated until you've checked them over; keep your mp3s
separate; etc

If you don't install the developer tools, I would say that 6-7 GB would be
enough. To be comfortable and if you can spare it, 10GB would be a good
size. That also depends on what you expect to store in your home directory.
For instance, if you have 10GB worth of MP3s, then you would need to
increase the size by 10GB. If you're expecting to do digital video editing,
then you would have to make the partition way bigger...

Anti-spam and the Low End Mac lists

2004-11-18 Thread Dan Knight
I just received an email from a subscriber who got a "challenge and
response" email from the Cashette anti-spam service. Such services work
by blocking email from any address not on the user's white list - which
means anyone posting to the list.

Our lists are already spam-proofed, so please don't use a challenge and
response anti-spam system on the address you use to subscribe to this
list. Here's our official policy on these services:

"What about anti-spam services?

"We already take the steps necessary to keep spam off our lists. Whatever
filtering you do with your email software and your email service is up to
you.

"That said, we take a dim view of anti-spam services such as Spam Arrest
that require the sender of a message to respond to a message from the
anti-spam service before allowing the recipient to receive the posting.
Such a service inconveniences anyone who posts to the list and is
unnecessary.

"These are all closed lists, so there is no spam. Only those who have
requested a subscription and confirmed their subscription are allowed to
post. If that is not good enough for you, please don't inconvenience our
members by asking them to jump through hoops to keep your mailbox spam
free.

"Any subscriber using this kind of anti-spam service will receive one
warning. If the situation is not resolved quickly, the subscriber will be
banned. The burden should be on the spammers, not innocent list members."

Remember, one warning.

I ask that anyone posting to the list who receives a challenge and
response email forward it to me with "anti-spam" in the subject line.

Thanks!

Thanks for your fast answer. You say "when you plug it in"... is that
into the AC alone or when first connecting to the Al-book. And if into
the book, then how do I prevent the iPod from wiping out my iTunes
file in the book, and replacing it with whatever is on the iPod.
Sorry, this is a new area for me. I did download all the manuals that
I could find but I don't want to learn at the cost of losing my iTunes
file.

iPod Question (OT)

2004-11-18 Thread TDK
Hi All,
Not a 'G Book' question but I have a Blueberry clamshell (Rev.B) and
would love to use an iPod with it so.
What (if any) experience has anyone had using a 'Windows' iPod
formatted to Mac and using it with a 1.1 USB port? Apple doesn't
recommend it, but seems like it would work, just slow.
Also, any experience hooking it up to their car stereo?
TIA,
Tim
