connect Epson 850N to Pismo?

2005-01-23 Thread Beverly Woods
I was given an Epson 850N, and have tried hooking it up to a Pismo with no
success so far. I have downloaded what looks like all the relevant software
and installed it, but the printer is not seen. Is there an easy/inexpensive
way to make this work?

TIA,

If you are running Panther on the Pismo, have you installed the Epson
printer driver pack from Install CD 3? That should work for you.

stickey keys

Hi! I just joined this list, being a long-time member of the Compacts

some soda onto my ibook G4's keyboard. Now the keys, specifically those
on the left side, stick and take a second or two to come back up. What
is suggested to fix this problem? Any liquids that won't hurt it?

Make sure to select both Epson checkboxes when installing Panther. The
driver may be in the one that is not checked by default.

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your printer
question, but if you are the same Beverly Woods who
used to write Acoustic Mac articles on LEM, I thought
they were great. The 'shareware I wouldn't want to be

the chance, do write more. I'm still using OS9 myself.

Have you tried Carbon Copy Cloner? It's at
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

Using this program, I have successfully cloned an entire drive,
including but not limited to OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.3.7 to an iBook using
Firewire Target Disk Mode. The result was a perfectly working iBook
that can even boot under OS 9. Try this as your last option at least
before you throw in the towel. Hope this helps. . .

I say try it anyway. . .Mac OS X usually changes during boot-up. And
if it does boot on the iBook, but doesn't have the resources, then
simply download the newest update and see if that works. Your iBook
doesn't work now anyway, so what do you have to lose?

I checked ebay and the cheapest keyboards are, of course, the
semi-transparent ones that are on the G3 clamshell ibooks. Question:
do ibook G3 keyboards work on ibook G4s? I know that that'll look
tacky, but being a student one must be looking at the prices more than
the looks :) I'm fairly sure they do work, I just have to double-check
 here.

 Or, you could
remove the keyboard, remove the key caps, and try to put the keyboard and
the key caps in some soapy solution. Then, rinse, and leave it to dry for

Doing so will *not* damage the keyboard? BTW, I have replaced
individual keys on my mom's clamshell keyboard (after the dog had been
digging into the keyboard with those razor-sharp claws) and I had
quite the trouble with only a couple keys, so removing and then
replacing keys on a whole half of a keyboard would b quite a task I
 should think!

I don't think that the clamshell iBook keyboard is compatible with the G4
iBook, but I'm not sure.

I know that removing all the key caps can be a pain, that's why I suggested
to replace the whole keyboard first...

Re: iBook CD ROM dead, Install question. HELP

2005-01-23 Thread Alex Santos 100MB Neostrada Mail
iBook 500 (dual USB) 64MB of RAM, CD ROM drive dead.
OF works fine, I can do a printenv at the prompt and the boot-device
shows the correct default for new world machines as being, hd:,\\:txbi

It just won't boot. But in Target mode the disk mounts on my eMacs
desktop and in fact I can boot up my eMac using the iBook's HD while
the iBook is in Target mode.

Can anyone explain this? Since the CDROM drive is dead I can't use C to
startup from a CD, but I have installed Panther, while the ibook was in
Target mode, using my eMac and like I said it will boot my eMac right
up but it will not boot itself.

I get a flashing question mark inside a folder

Re: stickey keys

2005-01-23 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi,
Isn`t it possible to take it apart and get it cleaned and dried then
put it back? I know I read somewhere about somebody who spilled a
beer and another spilled coke, in his powerbook. It is a long time
ago though... But again, an iBook keyboard can be cheap on eBay. If
you take some time looking around, it pays off. I saw one a little
while ago at $20, which ended a little while later.

Take a look here:
http://search.ebay.com/ibook-keyboard_W0QQsojsZ1QQfromZR40
While doing that search, I also saw a seller selling skins for the
iBook keyboard. That seems just great... I think I will get one...

Aase :)

Sensitive track pad - using skins

2005-01-23 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi,
I was wondering if maybe using one of these thin vinyl skins that
covers the entire keyboard, maybe could help with this problem,
making the keyboard less sensitive. The one I looked at, didn`t only
cover the key`s, but the entire keyboard including the track pad.

Any of you tried these? My iBook is the 1.2 Ghz G4. I don`t know if
the track pad is the same on all the white iBooks, or if this is a
problem only on these?

I would appreciate any input, as this is really bothering me a lot. I
have had to re-type things so many things, and I have to stop and go
to Edit--Undo over and over again. Sometimes I don`t react fast
enough though, so I have lost an entire paragraph several times as it
first moves the cursor then selects it and when I hit the next key,
it all disappears. It is really annoying... It is impossible for me
to type like I normally do (faster than most, I think) because of
this, and I use a lot of time going back to fix stuff.

I think it happened 7-10 times while typing the above, that is how
much of a problem it is. The iBook also gets real warm, and that does
not help either. Warm hands seem to make this worse, and I really do
not think I actually touch the track pad a lot of the times it
happens, but having the hand over it really close, seems to make it
happen.

I have to figure out something so I can handle this better...
Thanks a lot!!!
Aase :)

iBook 500 (dual USB) 64MB of RAM, CD ROM drive dead.

Just caught the first line. 64 megs of ram isn't enough to boot into X.
Jaguar needs 128 megs and I think Panther needs 256 megs.

Hi! I just joined this list, being a long-time member of the Compacts
list. I have a problem: A month or two ago, a friend of mine spilled
some soda onto my ibook G4's keyboard. Now the keys, specifically
those
on the left side, stick and take a second or two to come back up. What
is suggested to fix this problem? Any liquids that won't hurt it?

Andrew
Best way is to remove all the keys and clean the keyboard with a gentle
soap and water combo. Let it dry for a good long while. I did that on
my iBook, and I put all the actual keys into a pair of socks and then
through my washing machine (front-loader, so it doesn't mangle
anything).
Be careful removing the keys, it's rather easy to break the little tabs
that hold the key onto the arm or lever or whatever it's called. If
they do break you can fix it with a sewing needle and a small pair of
wire cutters.

Hello Alex,

The eMac CD you are installing OS X from is a machine specific CD for an
eMac.

You need to get hold of an OS X retail CD and install that over FireWire.

In my experience, Panther install CDs work on any machine. The disks
that came with my iBook G4 work on an iMac G3, an aluminium PowerBook
G4, and a Wallstreet (with XPostFacto). It seems to be only earlier OS
install CDs that are machine-specific.

sticky keyboard

2005-01-23 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey, just to add to what laurent has said--
I would strongly advise AGAINST the use of soap- and just use water.
why?
If i remember correctly, most of the parts in the ibook were actually
water-washed after the soldiering phase (and before the addition of
microchips) because of flux residue.
Soap may be too abrasive, but water will probably not hurt the
keyboard. If you do any light scrubbing (and I suggest not, just
repeatedly dipping, soaking,
or a light rub) it may lift the vitals off the board. I'd give it a try
though. Oh, and DEFINITELY wait for it to be entirely dry, laurent was
quite right in suggesting
2 to 3 days. If you've GOT to have it faster, try a fan. (NO HAIR
DRYERS!)

Oh, and laurent- I, for one, appreciate getting paychecks ( =
