Re: TO:Gmail and Mail

2005-02-08 Thread Marcin Wichary
Whoa, you must have some high powered email accounts if Gmail is like
all of your others. Gmail uses encrypted POP and SMTP. You certainly
don't set them up like you set up a non-SSL email account. You don't
use the same ports etc.
Maybe I misinterpreted what you meant.
It's just one or two checkboxes of a difference. And due to spam,
secure mailboxes are becoming more and more popular...

In any case...
- log in to Gmail
- click on Settings
- click on Forwarding and POP
- click on Enable POP for all mail
- click on Configuration instructions below
- click on Apple Mail
Your instructions are there.

help me diagnose The Satanic Lombard please

2005-02-08 Thread The Real Seed Catalogue
Hi All, some may have heard this story from other lists but now,
after having used fixed almost every mac ever produced before 1999,
I've met one I can't diagnose! Hoping someone here can help.
We bought a Lombard 400/DVD/256/6 off ebay.. . . .
.. .and it hard-froze all the time under 9.2 (every 2 mins)
... and hard-froze occasionally under 9.1, often with type 2/3 after rebooting
... and locked up as soon as you launch the installation of X10.3
(booting from DVD)
...but stable under 9.2 if booted extensions off.
. . and really happy playing DVDs - can watch an entire DVD in 9.1
Just to be clear these are all fresh installs, formatted HD, two
different HDs, nvram reset etc - I used to think I knew what I was
doing in these cases.
So I'm thinking RAM or CPU card here - ok so far?
Ram fitted was Kingston KTA-iMac/128 x 2. Tried swapping / removing
one at a time , no difference.
Today I got a new (£££!) Crucial 256 Mb chip for it instead of the
Kingston. And this is where I'm _really_ confused. Now it is much
better but still bad:
..totally stable in 9.1
..locks up sometimes in 9.2
..will get part way through installing X10.3
So it is a lot better but not right.
I have 3 theories:
1) the RAM. The original was PC-66. The new is PC-100. Maybe PC-133
would cure it?I called Crucial and they were really helpful -
they have sold about 100 modules for that model and had 3% returns,
they are sure it is ok. They were adamant the PC-133 would not help.
2) The CPU card
3) The Mobo
So.. (sorry for the long post) WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?
Any suggestions very welcome, it is beginning to get to me!
Ben

I don't think increasing the RAM speed would help at all. The Lombards
have a 66mhz bus speed, so having faster RAM won't help; the RAM will
always reduce back to the bus speed. Prehaps there was some kind of
mobo damage in the past, which also affected the other ram module? BTW,
I've had trouble installing 10.2 multiple times on my perfectly working
Beige G3; I had to try many times until one time it finally completed
installing. I also once had a Duo 280c that would run fine when
connected with the power adaptor, but when run off of a battery it would
freeze often, sometimes when it was just idling. And when booted it
would occasionally stay at a black screen and make a farting noise :/
Finally out of frustration I put my foot through it and, well, that was
that. Mac problems can be very hard to figure out, as you are
experiencing here. You might eventually be forced to purchace a whole
new mobo :(

That's my 3 cents worth
Andrew

for the apparent sporadic nature of the issues that Andrew is seeing. I

Safari still lags on https . . .

2005-02-08 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
I recently posted a thread on this topic and didn't really get a
response. Safari STILL hangs on all secure servers. It has gotten so
bad, that I use IE for all secure transactions. Sometimes it can take
as long as 5 MINUTES just to load a secure page. Is there a problem
with Java? Bad version of Safari? Sites like Gmail won't even load,
my bank website takes so long that sometimes the server times out.
I've tried everything, re-installing Java, Safari and re-formatting my
HDD. I even installed 10.3 on my external LaCie HDD and after a while,
the lagging started again! I thought it might have been Airport, so I
connected my Pismo to the ethernet and STILL no difference.

Could this be one of the first signs of a G3 not being up to par for
OS X? My grandma has the 17 flat panel iMac with an 800Mhz G4, 256
RAM and her software is up to date like my Pismo and while there is a
slight hang, it's never longer than 10 seconds.

At a lose here folks. I love Safari and want to keep it as my default
browser, but if Apple doesn't fix this problem I'm going to have to
switch to either Opera or Netscape. Thanks for any input. My only
other possibility is Earthlink, but talking to their customer service
is like calling SBC. My system: Pismo G3/500, 1gig RAM. All software
up to date.

Hmmm... perhaps...
I'm accessing the bulk of my sites over HTTPS on a daily basis and
Safari is doing just fine.

If I recall there is/was an issue with DNS lookup in Mac OS X, which
manifest(ed) itself with an host name not being properly resolved the
first time around. But this is/was not specific to Safari, rather a bug
in the OS itself.

Other than the occasional DNS hiccup, Safari works just fine over
HTTP/S in my experience. No complain on this side of the pound :)

Most likely a very local problem on your machine I'm afraid.

iBooks booting from CD?

2005-02-08 Thread - drive - drift - dream -
My otherwise lovely new iBook came preinstalled with Panther, which
unfortunately, I just found that one of my main apps won't run in, and
there's no known fix.

So I go and partition off part of the drive to install Jaguar on,
reboot with the Jaguar CD in the drive as the selected startup disk,
and it reboots into Panther. Figure ok, maybe I wasn't too clear on
that, reboot holding down the C key. I get the folder/flashing
question mark icon thing until I finally let go of the key, and then it
boots back into Panther.

It just refuses to boot off the Jaguar CD! Any way I can force it to
do this, or am I stuck never being able to use that app on that
machine, ever?

Thanks!

What app are you trying to run? Could there be an open source or

Three things to try:
Quit Safari every once in a while, the longer it runs the slower it gets.
Quitting and relaunching speeds things up.

Turn off auto-fill forms. Safari checks the auto-fill list for every site it
goes to.

Delete history and cache files from safari. Use one of the maintenance
/cleanup utilities like Cocktail ($) or Onyx (Free).

This should speed up Safari considerably.

What app are you trying to run? Could there be an open source or
shareware equivalent?
It's a program in Python, PyDance. It *is* open source. But no one
knows how to fix it. I don't know of any sufficiently functional
equivalents.

Why do they do that to the machines? I'm buying a new computer, why
can't I install whatever OS version I like on it? It's not like I'm
trying to install the no longer supported OS 9 or anything. What
difference would it make to them if someone wanted to run Jaguar on
their machine, too?

Can it boot off an external Firewire drive running Jaguar?

Well, there's StepMania, but it's just not the same...it's like
Fireworks when you're a diehard Photoshop user...

Re: iBooks booting from CD?

2005-02-08 Thread Jim Dynes
It most likely won't boot on any OS before 10.3.5. I recently bought
the 2005 12 Ibook 1.2 and it was shipped with 10.3.5 it won't boot
with anything else.

I get the folder/flashing
question mark icon thing until I finally let go of the key, and then
it boots back into Panther.

It just refuses to boot off the Jaguar CD! Any way I can force it to
do this, or am I stuck never being able to use that app on that
machine, ever?

Yeah, that's what I got...even though I managed to get Jaguar installed
on the iBook by using it as a Firewire target drive from my desktop,
still can't convince it to boot from that...

(can't use my desktop for the program due to the floors where my
desktop's located...)

Because new hardware=updated software. Every time Apple makes a new
computer, they update the current version of the system to work with the
new hardware and ship it with that. If they made it possible to run an
older OS on new machines, they would have to use OLD hardware supported
by the older system, which completely demolishes the point of buying a
new computer. You wouldn't buy a new computer, only to find it uses old
outdated hardware. That's basically why old systems don't work on new
hardware.
