Re: losing internet connection

2005-03-01 Thread rob
I had the same problem when using Airport Extreme as part of my home
network. The airport boards on the apple tech support page is full of
similar problems which point to the base station as the most likely
culprit. After several attempts with Applecare to solve the problem,
they finally replaced my airport extreme. The new one still has the
problem, but much less often. On the other hand, when traveling I use
a network of three airport expresses (without the airport extreme), and
have never had the problem with that network.

Re: losing internet connection

2005-03-01 Thread Claire Hart
We have this problem sometimes, and we're fairly sure it's our ISP.
Up/downloads get slower and slower, and occasionally we lose it
altogether. We have one iMac, two PCs, one wireless PowerBook and one
wireless PC laptop connected to the internet via DSL, with an Airport
Extreme transmitting to the wireless ones. They are all affected
simultaneously. Turning off the modem/router for a few seconds
rectifies this. My son says it makes the router pick a new connection.
Our ISP for some reason took a liking to us, and went the extra mile
to try to fix our inconsistent service, and in the process they called
SBC to work on the lines in our area, and then they upgraded some of
the hardware in our area!! It sounds unbelievable, I know. My sons
are gamers, and the older one is majoring in computer science plus
upstarting a hosting business with a friend plus authoring websites and
doing graphic design. The ISP troubleshooting guy sort of befriended
us, calling to see if this or that worked yet. This relationship
with the ISP happened around Christmas. Service is a little better,
but my son, who monitors all this activity, reported to me even last
night that our service is still inconsistent.

I personally have wondered if cable would be more consistent. This may
not be your problem at all, but we had (and still do to some extent)
constant trouble losing a connection all the time. Incidentally,
that's why we changed ISP service about a year ago and switched from
a Netgear wireless to an Apple Airport Extreme a few months ago,
thinking these changes would fix everything. (Like my dad used to
say: If so-and-so gets elected, that will fix everything!)

You might want to go to a coffee shop, your neighbor's house, or
somewhere that provided free wireless internet. Hang out there for a
while, and see if you lose connection within the same amount of time
that you did at home. That might provide a clue as to whether the
problem lies within your computer.

My first problem is trying to state what's really going on so you can
understand.  I'm using an indigo ibook along with an airport express;
operating on mac os 10.3.8. I initially had some trouble getting the
system to work with the airport express, but an apple tech walked me
through a set up and had me create a network with a name. call it
home for example. Everything was fine for a couple of months. But
for the last couple of months I've been losing my internet connection
while chatting or whatever. When I open internet connect and try
reconnecting I get this msg. that says, there was an error joining
network home. Or, I'm out of range (not likely as I'm only about 10'
away). The usual fix is restarting the computer. Sometimes this works
right away, sometimes it doesn't. Frustrating to say the least. Any
suggestions? Thank you for your time!

I think LaCie 's burner is a good choice as is the HP printer (I have one
myself). For the Analog Digital converter, take a look at Miglia products.
I've seen them at CompUSA, Mall, Zones, JR, even SmallDog and OWC! There's
a $40 mail in rebate on the DC converter. If you don't want the full frame
by frame editability and simply, try their new Evolution TV box or their
current PCI DVR tuner card(if an internal solution will work for you).

As for the hard drive, Miglia do make these as well but only firewire - they
do look good though! Their site is www.miglia.com.

Did I mention Miglia

What is the presentation before you try to do the cleanup? Do you have the

Bridging between airport and ethernet

2005-03-01 Thread Orlando Mac Geek
I do not know if it is possible to do this, so thought I would throw
it out there and see what kind of response I get.

My apartment complex gives us free WiFi which I happily use and
connect witrh my Powerbook's AirPort card. What I would like to do is
to bridge this connection using the built in ethernet port.

Basically what I am trying to do is hook up my Vonage terminal adapter
to my Powerbook. The problem is if I setup some form of internet
connection sharing, that basically puts a double NAT on the signal and
Vonage will not work.

Is there a way to allow my mac to simply work as a hub. Allowing my
Vonage to recieve DHCP information and connect out over the WiFi
connection.

Try pressing and releasing all the modifier keys (control, option,
apple, shift, function caps lock). If the keyboard has two control
keys try holding one down then the other then release the first and
then release the second. Sometimes the keyboard logic gets confused
and misses the key release.

Does the mouse have a second button? Could it be stuck?
As a last resort try a shut down and startup.

Re: OS X desktop icon bug, I cannot believe...

2005-03-01 Thread Tim Collier
I think somebody already posted a reply to your question a bit earlier
today. From the desktop, choose the view menu then Show View Options and
there you can choose the icon size and how items are displayed on the
desktop. You can choose to keep arranged by name or kind or whatever.
Personally, I use Name and my HD icon is always up in the upper right. Try
a couple of different things and see what you like best.
One thing I like is that you can opt to show information on the items. This
is great because it will display free space on my HD or how many items are
in a folder. This works in 10.2 and 10.3 (I don't remember if you could do
this in 10.1). It also shows file sizes and such. Also you can use
different colors on desktop item by control clicking.
Give it a try.

There is a utility called 'Look Mom, No Hands', also for OS 9 and lower

 It's all I want.

I don't need my menus to replace the finder, dance for me wash my

Bruce,

Do you think such utility would be useful and that a lot of people would use
it? I'm kinda wondering why the other of FinderPop never ported his
application to OS X...

But if there would be some demand, that might be something I could wrote.
I've been doing Cocoa development since basically 1992, so I know a little

I know I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.
Turly quit working on FinderPop because he and Apple had a parting of
the ways (in many senses) when OS X came out.

http://www.finderpop.com (I don't think the sordid details are still
there, though)

I know what it's got to do, conceptually:
on button-down-and-hold:
if the pointer has not moved in settings time then tell contextual
menu manager to get busy;

The problem, of course is that it involves patching the mouse drivers,
and that a wee bit deep into the guts for me, but it's a simple thing:
Look Mom No Hands http://www.toolsandtoys.com/ did it in 90K as an
classic OS extension.

The ONLY thing LMNH does is pop up the contextual menu after you've
held down the mouse button without moving for the time defined by the
double-click setting. I paid for that, I'd pay for one in OS X.

It doesn't need all the other whiz-bang doodads these other apps need.
But if there would be some demand, that might be something I could
wrote.

Good, saves me the hassle of having to a heck of a lot just to do
this

I think somebody already posted a reply to your question
a bit earlier today.
Yes, I have even switched to snap to grid to stop me from
getting pissed off, but it's not really the point I was making,
it was more that I couldn't line icons up without them jumping
halfway across the screen for no apparent reason.

Do you place your icons and then clean up or do
you have them sorted in a predefined order ?
All I do is snapping every icon (don't know the exact words in the
English system, I use the Italian version) to the grid in the Show View
Option.
Nothing else.
I'll tell you what came to mind when I read your post.
(1) If your preferences are NOT set to snap-to-grid, and
(2) you've been gathering a collection of icons all over your desktop,
and then
(3) you decide to switch your preferences TO snap-to-grid, and then
(4) you select SOME or ALL of your desktop items and drag them just a
little bit, then:

The result is that each icon snaps to the closest point on the grid.
Some go up a little, some go down a little, some go left a
little,etc... They all do appear to fly a little, and they all end
up in the grid rather than random.

Could that be what you are describing?

If it's using OS X, you can enable internet connection sharing in the
