Re: losing internet connection
I had the same problem when using Airport Extreme as part of my home network. The airport boards on the apple tech support page is full of similar problems which point to the base station as the most likely culprit. After several attempts with Applecare to solve the problem, they finally replaced my airport extreme. The new one still has the problem, but much less often. On the other hand, when traveling I use a network of three airport expresses (without the airport extreme), and have never had the problem with that network. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: losing internet connection
We have this problem sometimes, and we're fairly sure it's our ISP. Up/downloads get slower and slower, and occasionally we lose it altogether. We have one iMac, two PCs, one wireless PowerBook and one wireless PC laptop connected to the internet via DSL, with an Airport Extreme transmitting to the wireless ones. They are all affected simultaneously. Turning off the modem/router for a few seconds rectifies this. My son says it makes the router pick a new connection. Our ISP for some reason took a liking to us, and went the extra mile to try to fix our inconsistent service, and in the process they called SBC to work on the lines in our area, and then they upgraded some of the hardware in our area!! It sounds unbelievable, I know. My sons are gamers, and the older one is majoring in computer science plus upstarting a hosting business with a friend plus authoring websites and doing graphic design. The ISP troubleshooting guy sort of befriended us, calling to see if this or that worked yet. This relationship with the ISP happened around Christmas. Service is a little better, but my son, who monitors all this activity, reported to me even last night that our service is still inconsistent. I personally have wondered if cable would be more consistent. This may not be your problem at all, but we had (and still do to some extent) constant trouble losing a connection all the time. Incidentally, that's why we changed ISP service about a year ago and switched from a Netgear wireless to an Apple Airport Extreme a few months ago, thinking these changes would fix everything. (Like my dad used to say: If so-and-so gets elected, that will fix everything!) You might want to go to a coffee shop, your neighbor's house, or somewhere that provided free wireless internet. Hang out there for a while, and see if you lose connection within the same amount of time that you did at home. That might provide a clue as to whether the problem lies within your computer. I'm using an indigo ibook along with an airport express; operating on mac os 10.3.8. I initially had some trouble getting the system to work with the airport express, but an apple tech walked me through a set up and had me create a network with a name. call it home for example. Everything was fine for a couple of months. But for the last couple of months I've been losing my internet connection while chatting or whatever. When I open internet connect and try reconnecting I get this msg. that says, there was an error joining network home. Or, I'm out of range (not likely as I'm only about 10' away). The usual fix is restarting the computer. Sometimes this works right away, sometimes it doesn't. Frustrating to say the least. Any suggestions? Re: Peripheral buying advice needed (slightly OT)
I think LaCie 's burner is a good choice as is the HP printer (I have one myself). For the Analog Digital converter, take a look at Miglia products. I've seen them at CompUSA, Mall, Zones, JR, even SmallDog and OWC! There's a $40 mail in rebate on the DC converter. If you don't want the full frame by frame editability and simply, try their new Evolution TV box or their current PCI DVR tuner card(if an internal solution will work for you). As for the hard drive, Miglia do make these as well but only firewire - they do look good though! Their site is www.miglia.com. Bridging between airport and ethernet
I do not know if it is possible to do this, so thought I would throw it out there and see what kind of response I get. My apartment complex gives us free WiFi which I happily use and connect witrh my Powerbook's AirPort card. What I would like to do is to bridge this connection using the built in ethernet port. Basically what I am trying to do is hook up my Vonage terminal adapter to my Powerbook. The problem is if I setup some form of internet connection sharing, that basically puts a double NAT on the signal and Vonage will not work. Is there a way to allow my mac to simply work as a hub. Allowing my Vonage to recieve DHCP information and connect out over the WiFi connection. Orlando Mac Geek -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: OS X desktop icon bug, I cannot believe...
I think somebody already posted a reply to your question a bit earlier today. From the desktop, choose the view menu then Show View Options and there you can choose the icon size and how items are displayed on the desktop. You can choose to keep arranged by name or kind or whatever. Personally, I use Name and my HD icon is always up in the upper right. Try a couple of different things and see what you like best. One thing I like is that you can opt to show information on the items. This is great because it will display free space on my HD or how many items are in a folder. This works in 10.2 and 10.3 (I don't remember if you could do this in 10.1). It also shows file sizes and such. Also you can use different colors on desktop item by control clicking. Give it a try. Re: OS X desktop icon bug, I cannot believe...
From: Tim Collier [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think somebody already posted a reply to your question a bit earlier today. Yes, I have even switched to snap to grid to stop me from getting pissed off, but it's not really the point I was making, it was more that I couldn't line icons up without them jumping halfway across the screen for no apparent reason. Re: OS X desktop icon bug, I cannot believe...
Do you place your icons and then clean up or do you have them sorted in a predefined order ? All I do is snapping every icon (don't know the exact words in the English system, I use the Italian version) to the grid in the Show View Option. Nothing else. I'll tell you what came to mind when I read your post. (1) If your preferences are NOT set to snap-to-grid, and (2) you've been gathering a collection of icons all over your desktop, and then (3) you decide to switch your preferences TO snap-to-grid, and then (4) you select SOME or ALL of your desktop items and drag them just a little bit, then: The result is that each icon snaps to the closest point on the grid. Some go up a little, some go down a little, some go left a little,etc... They all do appear to fly a little, and they all end up in the grid rather than random. Could that be what you are describing?
