into their network. Don't I need a password and stuff like that in
order to get on line?
Lawrence
Lawrence,
Last Christmas eve, we were driving through a small ski town in
northern New Mexico, planning to ski Christmas Day. It was late and
everything was closed, so it was impossible to ask around to find
decently-priced accommodations (the resort wanted $217/night). So, my
son on his PC and my other son on my PowerBook looked for a signal as I
slowly drove down the main street in that town. About every other
business gave off a signal that reached the street, and about every
third signal did not require a password. We went to Orbit and found
our sleeping accommodations for the night, in another small town 10
miles down the road (paid $45/night). From there, we got MapQuest's
help for directions, and took a screen capture of it.

Just click your Airport signal in the menu bar. It will automatically
list in black any signal that reaches your computer. Click one to see
if it requires a password. If it does, close the window, drive a
little further and try again.

From my house, I sometimes have a second signal to show up as
available. It requires a password. I have no idea whose it is. Also,
my neighbor's signal sometimes shows up if I'm in my front or back
yard.

Re: DVD Region Lombard

2005-04-05 Thread themacuser
I forgot the name of the software (something like regionbuster) but it
can reset the number of times this counter gets changed. I think
there's also an option to disable the region thing...
The regions are a stupid system made up by hollywood so they don't lose
money from people buying cheap DVDs from overseas.

Does anyone know if the clamshell CDROM is specific to the iBook - or
is there a standard form factor that will work? Thanks for your help.

Modern standard drives will work, but you'll have problems making the bezel
fit unless you use the same make and model. IIRC they need to be set to
slave in a Clamshell.

I just use my server space provided for free from my ISP. I have a
complete website I created for my family with 100's of photos, as well
as photos for eBay. The great thing about doing this is that you
don't have to worry about ads. I use a simple but powerful FTP
client, called Fetch. Check with your ISP and find out what they
offer with your account. For example, DSL Extreme offers 25 megabytes
of server space for each email account, giving 10 email accounts.
Earthlink offers 8 email accounts with up to 10 megabytes of server
space for each account. Charter has 10 email accounts with up to 10
megs per account, etc. Hope this helps,

Re: sync

2005-04-05 Thread Tim Collier
I use sort of a round-about way of doing this.and all it syncs is
Entourage calendars and contacts as well as various documents, but
Missing Sync (www.markspace.com) works really well with most PDA's.
Sync to the PDA from the laptop then sync it with the G5 iMac and
everything is the same on both. Also using iSync with a .Mac account
will 'sort of' do the same. I know this is not really the answer you
are looking for but it's a beginning. Hopefully Tiger will help us
deal with this issue.

Lawrence you can also download an app called MacStumbler (google for it

a new signal is found (great for one man wardriving) and tells you
which signal is encrypted.
I doubt that you would get busted for it any more than you could get
busted for hearing your neighbours stereo when the moron's got it on

Good luck.

Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-05 Thread Orlando Mac Geek
First off I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to
asnwer, just a few additional points of discussion.

1. Portability - While I appreciate everyone saying I should stick
with my Ti Powerbook, my mind is already make up to move to desktop.
I have a computer at work already and that is pretty much the only
other place I use my laptop. For portability I would have to say what
I have sucks. I have broken hinges which means I always need to be up
against the wall. Also have a battery which only gives me about 30
minutes of use and a lot less if doing anything CPU heavy.
One of the main reasons I want to get a desktop is to leave it at
home where I can have an FTP server setup and also want to use it as a
Tivo type DVR.
Another problem as I see it with the Powerbook is a complete lack
of upgradability. I can't put in a better video card, can't put in a
new CPU. Already maxed out my ram. I am definitly a tinkerer as far
as my hardware goes. I enjoy the flexibility that a tower would give
me as far as upgradaibility (if that is even a word).

2. My main question - Still have not gotten an answer as far as the
performace difference between a dual G4/450 and a single G4/733. The
machine will be used mainly for web surfing, e-mail, watching movies,
and also host a VERY low usage FTP server. Does anyone have any
thoughts which would be better?

Re: Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-05 Thread Muddle Man
Knowing these things probably would have changed our
suggestions as well.

I struggled with the same exact problem before I
bought my G4 733 QuickSilver. As you can read, I
decided on the single processor.

As I understand it, a dual processor is only about 1/3
faster than it's actual Mhz rating in OS X (since OS X
supports dual processors). For most tasks you'll be
better off with the single 733. The only exception
would be if you are using a new version of Photoshop
and do serious work with it (since it supports mutiple
processors as well).

I had a BW G3 450 before my 733. I had an ATA
controller in it and multiple drives. It worked fine
most of the time, but gave me a hassle occasionally.
My QuickSilver, however, as given me NO problems at
all. I am extremely happy with it. Do yourself a favor
and get as much RAM as you can (I maxed mine out to
1.5 and haven't looked back).

First off I would like to thank everyone for taking
 the time to
asnwer, just a few additional points of discussion.

 1. Portability - While I appreciate everyone saying
 I should stick
with my Ti Powerbook, my mind is already make up to
 move to desktop.
I have a computer at work already and that is pretty
 much the only
other place I use my laptop. For portability I
 would have to say what
I have sucks. I have broken hinges which means I
 always need to be up
against the wall. Also have a battery which only
 gives me about 30
minutes of use and a lot less if doing anything CPU
 heavy.
One of the main reasons I want to get a desktop
 is to leave it at
home where I can have an FTP server setup and also
want to use it as a
 Tivo type DVR.
Another problem as I see it with the Powerbook
 is a complete lack
of upgradability. I can't put in a better video
 card, can't put in a
new CPU. Already maxed out my ram. I am definitly
 a tinkerer as far
as my hardware goes. I enjoy the flexibility that a
 tower would give
me as far as upgradaibility (if that is even a
 word).

 2. My main question - Still have not gotten an
 answer as far as the
performace difference between a dual G4/450 and a
 single G4/733. The
machine will be used mainly for web surfing, e-mail,
 watching movies,
and also host a VERY low usage FTP server. Does
 anyone have any
 thoughts which would be better?

Re: ibook

2005-04-05 Thread Simon Tang
You can try the ScreenSpanning Doctor, found here:

http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

It will allow the enabling of clamshell mode, which allows you to
work from the ibook with the lid closedl. It supposedly voids your
warranty, but I have not encountered anyone who's had problems. It's
a firmware patch and can readily be patched back to the original
state.

I don't believe so. The iBook can only mirror the display to the external
monitor. In order to do that, you would have to leave the lid up. Hence you
would have to leave the monitor on. I have heard of some hacks to the iBooks
to allow the feature you requested. It's almost certain any such hack would
void your Apple warranty. Apple turns this feature off on purpose to
  separate it from the PowerBook.

Pismo DVD problem

2005-04-05 Thread Lorance Stinson
I have recently bought two PowerBooks from a used Mac dealer. The
Pismo so far has had a dead battery, mailed back to the seller, and is
having issues mounting DVDs. When we got it we put a movie in and
nothing happened, but the second movie worked fine. It can use CDs
just fine but will not mount any of our DVD movies. I have installed
software from CD-ROM, played music CDs and loaded CD-Rs, they all work
fine. It had 9.2 installed which updated it's self to the latest and
greatest. I've tried resetting every thing and still nothing. Any
suggestions before I pester the seller again? He's a really nice guy
and I don't want to bother him if it's a simple fix.

Unfortunately it's a pretty common problem with Pismo DVDs, especially
given their age now. They often have work only half right, i.e., the
either read CDs fine but not DVDs, or vice versa. Really no good fix
for them, you'll have to look for a new DVD/CD; though while you're at
it you might as well get a Combo CDRW/DVD or a Superdrive. Lots of good
cheap models are perfectly compatible. See the web site
www.xlr8yourmac.com for a good database and feedback on specific models
that work. If you can get a partial refund from the guy, say $40 or so,
that might be the way to go, as you could find a Combo on ebay for the
same money.
Good luck.
Chris

The LG CD/DVD drives in the Pismos are notoriously flaky.
Wegener Media sells replacements and kits to put in other drives, up to
Superdrives that are pretty reasonably priced, relatively speaking.

In mine I came across a working slot-loading CDRW/DVD drive from a
defunct TiBook. The drive fit right onto the carrier and plugged right
in.

There's no bezel on it, so it's just hanging out there. I may get
ambitious and see if I can retrofit the one from the broken drive, but
that's going to involve some serious Dremel work.

XLR8YourMac.com has reports of various modules that are known to work
with the Pismo.

PCMCIA 802.11b cards

2005-04-05 Thread Chad Swarthout
Is there a better driver that can be used for Orinoco 802.11b cards
other than the SourceForge WirelessCard?

I looked at IOXPERTS driver but it costs $20 and can only be used on
one card per registration.

Any thoughts?
