Re: Should I Consider Buying G4 Titanium

Expansion modules, the ability to run two batteries. Not to mention Pismo's
don't dent or chip and the hinges are a bit better. You can upgrade the
pismo to a 900 G3 or 550 G4. I have a G4 500 with 1 gig of ram 60 gig Hd, it
is a great machine.

Pismo DVD burner

Looking for a superdrive for my Pismo, has anyone had any luck with a
UJ-845-B? Anyone have any suggestions for one that will slot load, boot osx
and work with native apple apps. I have seen recommendations for older

replacing optical drive in G4 iBook?

2005-04-17 Thread Dennis Reeder
I have a 14 G4 ibook with a dead optical drive (slot loader
cd/cdr/dvd).

I have found sources for new drives and that are fairly
inexpensiveas in under $100.

Has anyone on list had experience replacing the drive? It looks like
its pretty labor/time intensive but doable.

Hoping to hear from someone with some actual hands-on experience so I
can get encouragement, warnings, tips etc.

Thanks!!!

Here's a fairly dumb question...

2005-04-17 Thread Barton Brown
I have a PBG4 17 Aluminum, OS X 10.3.8. At my shop, I'm connected to
the web by DSL (at home, by Airport to Cable Modem). Can I connect a
phone line to the phone jack on the back of the PB, and send and
receive e-faxes? I want to get rid of my huge, miserable, and
non-Mac-compliant (though they said it was when I bought it) Lexmark
6170 All-In-One. All I want to do is be able to send and receive faxes
electronically, as I used to be able to do on my Venerable UMAX S900,
using FAXstf or something similar.

Can I run both DSL and fax concurrently? When I had DSL installed, I
had to hang a noise filter off EVERY device in the POTL chain --
assuming I can do the e-fax thang, should I hang *another filter at
the phone port on my PB? Is there a good fax app someone can recommend
that's compatible with OS X 10.3.8?

Thanks in advance
Bart

DVD RW with Wallstreet

2005-04-17 Thread John . E . Abraham
Hi Listers
As a DVD in a Wallstreet is very rare, I am thinking of obtaining a DVD
RW in an external USB case to use with my Wallstreet 233 MHz PDQ.

I know that to watch DVD's I need a PCMCIA Video decoder card, but if I
want to use it as a Back up devices do I still need the decoder card.

Also I have heard that the PIONEER range of DVD RW are compatible with
Mac OS X, is this true.

As I am running OS 10.1.5 what drive should I best select. DVR 109 is a
good option for the future if I want to use it with future Mac models,
but I may not be compatible with the Wallstreet.

Any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks

I don't doubt that the prismo is an excellent machine BUT my experience
with apple tells me to always get the latest and greatest unless you
want to run Mac OS 9.2 or some sort of 3rd party software to run the
latest version of X. Don't jump down my throat because Mac OS 10.X.X
runs on it or not. Mac/Apple have never made great attempts at
remaining backwards compatible with older hardware. I could have picked
up a G3 Powerbook that would run 10.2 and possibly 10.3 a couple of
weeks ago for a good price. But will 10.4 or run on it and if it does,
how well will it run.

In my opinion, ALWAYS get the best/latest you can afford in any
computer because in a couple of years it will be outdated. In the case
of laptops, parts to repair them get harder to obtain by the minute.

Hi Bart,

Sometimes I need to send faxes from my home and I have similar setup. DSL +
Linksys WiFi Router. I just connect phone line to the back of my PowerBook
(actually it is side in my case) and send fax. The line has the noise filter
hanging from the wall but not from the PowerBook side. All works well when I
need it. In fact what I do (since I send only few faxes) is that I unplug
the cable from phone and connect to Powerbook for few minutes that I need to
send the fax.

I use the OS X built-in fax for my faxing needs. It is more than sufficient.

Re: Here's a fairly dumb question...

2005-04-17 Thread Barton Brown
Thanks for the info -- I didn't even know Apple bundled FAXstf with OS
X, and I've been using OS X since first release... guess you gotta look
for these things! Have any problems *receiving* faxes? My problem is my
shop has ONE phone line, but I think I can remember how to set the
answer on x rings, detect fax tone -- used it for years in OS 7.x.x.
through 9.2.2.

Thanks again!

Hi Bart,
Sometimes I need to send faxes from my home and I have similar setup.
DSL +
Linksys WiFi Router. I just connect phone line to the back of my
PowerBook
(actually it is side in my case) and send fax. The line has the noise
filter
hanging from the wall but not from the PowerBook side. All works well
when I
need it. In fact what I do (since I send only few faxes) is that I
unplug
the cable from phone and connect to Powerbook for few minutes that I
need to
send the fax.

I use the OS X built-in fax for my faxing needs. It is more than
sufficient.

I have adobe reader 5.0 im my wallstreet running

loads and reads with no problems. However, when I
attempt to download any pdf files off the net I keep

internal error has occured'. Any suggestions.
 TIA.
 Pete.

I finally figured out what the problem is, after
spending some time on adobe reader forums. The problem
is with Netscape 7.02 not loading (PDViewer) plug-in.
Communicator 4.77 and Internet Exploder are now
downloading pdf files from the net with no problems.
How can I make netscape 7.02 to launch the PDViewer
plug-in whenever a pdf document is being downloaded?
There is a plug-in folder in the 7.02 folder and it
has the PDViewer plug-in, it just does not load during
downloads from the net.
Help somebody.
TIA.
Pete.

FAXstf is not bundled with OS X. You have to purchase it. However, starting
with Panther (10.2), there is a built-in fax capability into OS X. It is not
FAXstf but when you don't have to send faxes regularly, it's fine.

bozotic /boh-zoh'tik/ or /boh-zo'tik/ adj.: [from the name of a TV clown
even more losing than Ronald McDonald] Resembling or having the quality of a
bozo; that is, clownish, ludicrously wrong, unintentionally humorous.
Compare wonky, demented. Note that the noun `bozo' occurs in slang, but the
mainstream adjectival form would be `bozo-like' or (in New England)
`bozoish'.

2005-04-17 Thread Chad Swarthout
Does anyone know how to get a Konica Mintolta 1350W printer to work on OS X?

I've looked on a number of sites, but no luck.

Thanks,

Fax via airport

2005-04-17 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Last year we speculated over the feasibility of sending fax via
airport to a telephone line connected to the Airport base station.

is anybody aware if a similar software is now available?
