Problem with iPhoto

2005-04-30 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Hello.

I am new to the list. I've been using Macs for a long
time, althoughnot so much in recent years ;-) I'm
much better on pre-OS X problems. I was on the
Powerbooks list for awhile and still maintain and
frequently use my PB3400 as well as a Sonnet upgraded
7300 and a few other Macs I have sitting around.

This post, however, is about my wife's iBook G4 - a
bit more on topic ;-)

Anyway, I was hoping maybe someone could help me out
with a small problem.

Like I said, my wife has a iBook G4 running OS 10.3.9.
She is also running iPhoto 2.0.1 and has been using a
Pentax Optio S4 digital camera for over a year with
absolutely no trouble. (Although, I realized tonight
that Pentax cameras are not listed on Apples
"supported" list.)

Tonight, after taking a few photos, she went to import
them into iPhoto. She turned off her camera, plugged
in the USB cable, opened iPhoto and then turned the
Camera back on - just as she's done hundreds of times
in the past. This time, however, it didn't work. It
basically doesn't see that any camera is connected.
Also, where usually she would get an "untitled" disk
on her desktop when the camera mounted, she gets
nothing... it doesn't know the camera exists.

I had her try both USB ports and got the same result.
I had her try a freshly formatted SD card in teh
camera but it made no difference. The camera will
beep when it is plugged/unplugged from teh USB as if
it's detecting a power source. I had her try
attaching her Palm cradle to one of the ports and she
successfully did a hotsynch, so i know the ports are
working.

Her best friend uses an iBook G3 running 10.3.9 with
iPhoto 2.0.1 nad she happened to be there. We
connected the camera to her machine and it instantly
imported the photos - no problem at all. So I am
certain it is not her camera nor her USB cable.

I have a USB drive that utilizes SD cards for it's
data source. I put her SD card from her camera in it
and plugged it into her iBook. Nothing. It wouldn't
mount it or recognize it. It's power light did
illuminate when it was connected, however. I took the
same drive with the same card and plugged it into her
friends iBook G3 and instantly, iPhoto opened and it
started transferring files...

Anyother thoughts on things I can try to get this
working? It's very frustrating.

On a side note, I noticed that iPhoto shows it's
latest version to be 5.0.2 and there are update links
on the website for both 4.0.3 and 5.0.2. She has
never been given an option of updating her iPhoto in
any of her routine updates. She tried downloading
these updates tonight to see if it would help
(although i doubt it, since it won't even mount the
device to the desktop), but when running the iPhoto
4.0.3 update she gets a message stating it cannot be
installed because neither iPhoto 4 nor iPhoto 4.0.1
can be found. (Which is true since she is running
2.0.1) Should she update her iPhoto version? And how
can she go about updating from 2.0.1??

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer on
this. Again, I'm not real OS X savy, but hope to
pickup a lot more :-) My background is extensive in
hardware, however, and I do have quite a bit of mac
experience both with notebooks and desktops, so I look
forward to being able to contribute where I can as
well.

Thanks for reading,
Sionnach

Re: iLife installation problem

2005-04-30 Thread Jan Musil
Maybe a stupid idea that may help - I remember from one old program
on Windows that it was reading the titles of the windows to determine
if the app was running. I had Text Editor with file of the same name
as app open and it would not allow me to run the installer. Check if
you have browser or some other window open that has iLife or any of
the iLife applications in the title. It may or may not work - depend
on how they determine that something is running.

iLife installation problem

2005-04-30 Thread Herbert Goodfriend
I am trying to install iPhoto 4 from an iLife '04 DVD on a Pismo
running OS 10.3. After the window "The installer needs to run a
program to determine whether it can be installed", I get a message
that iLife "cannot be installed because one of its programs is
running."

I am sure that none of the iLife programs is running. I also have
restarted the machine, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail.

Any suggestions appreciated.

To follow up - I ordered a 14" ref'd iBook today for my parents... the
telesales rep mentioned that Tiger would be dropped into the bundle -
for me to install. I mentioned that it conflicted with what I was
told yesterday, and he mentioned that they only tell us what they are

so we'll see what arrives in the box!

fat electrons n.: Old-time hacker David Cargill's theory on the causation of
computer glitches. Your typical electric utility draws its line current out
of the big generators with a pair of coil taps located near the top of the
dynamo. When the normal tap brushes get dirty, they take them off line to
clean them up, and use special auxiliary taps on the bottom of the coil.
Now, this is a problem, because when they do that they get not ordinary or
`thin' electrons, but the fat'n'sloppy electrons that are heavier and so
settle to the bottom of the generator. These flow down ordinary wires just
fine, but when they have to turn a sharp corner (as in an integrated-circuit
via), they're apt to get stuck. This is what causes computer glitches.

Well. for the gathered listers. The "enable L2 Cache" option in XPF must
be turned off for the Wallstreet I with blue chip g4 accellerater to

It certainly could be unique to my wallstreet, Please try on your

Prolly just save the important stuff to the USB drive and reinstall X.

Ah well... a rainy weekend, a hot cup of tea and OS installation. What more
could one ask? ;)

Re: Pismo and Wallstreet RAM questions...

2005-04-30 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
Way to go man, see your a Lawyer already lol Well one thing for sure
you have a GF for life.>>W
Get the gig of new ram, sell what you have on low end swap, the pismos
can be a little RAM touchy sometimes on OS X might be Ok but not worth
risk...

you want to only want that puppy up once and reseat it as little as
possible, it takes just about enough pressure to reseat as my stomach
can take, when you reseating the card. When removing card notice the 2
little green tabs to the left towards airport card

Those go in the metal cage, probably have a slight green stain on the
metal slots on the cage, that will help you remember where they go back
in and help get alignment of pins correct. You do not want to bend
pins. Do not remove white heat pad. Lots of directtions and even some
QT movies on web, those are a couple of things they sometimes leave
out.

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,
I was wondering -- is the RAM on a Wallstreet compatible with the RAM

Ask Vendor who you buy New RAM from, bad ram is one of the leading
problems of pismos
next to reseating the card DMS, OWC. good vendors Ya I know another
$160.00
GFs Not always cheap but Gotta Love-em
have a relative abundance of Wallstreet RAM
(over 1 gig, split between upper and lower) and I have a Pismo on the
way that only has 192 RAM.
sell all of it on Low end swap use $$ for new
I am tempted to just buy new RAM and max it out cheap-like, but it will
set me back about $180 or so and the idea was to have a cheap Book for
my GF.
Do it. Love these pismos, 1 gig still makes them go pretty good for an
old timer
a little cool pad, $20 to $40 helps keep airflow and thighs in summer
from

(Yes, I ended up getting a Pismo for her
Did the right thing.
I decided I wanted to
surprise her by making her games work -- plus, it will impress upon her
the selection of PC software titles also available on Mac. The goal
here is to win her over to Mac for life -- especially if we end up
going
the distance. [g])
Very importantPlus your knowledge of computers will thrill and
amaze her as you did all this yourself
just for her! Manly Man stuff you know
I am already looking at eating about $100 for an airport card, so I'd
rather not push the RAM up to where I could have gotten her an iBook
Ice
or something.
1 gig of Ram is what makes these pismos keep up and run 10.3.9 just
fine. Probably 10.4 also but too new OS if leaving soon?
7200 RPM HD really helps but we won't go there.
$75.00 should get you a airport card for the pismo LES, can not use A/P
extreme card inside the pismo only original LES
Still, it would be ... ironic for her Pismo to be decked out with more
RAM than my brand new 1.2ghz iBook (at 748). And if I add the 40gig HD
  hehe.
Sincerely,
Pacer the now-broke
"Oh crap, now how am I going to pay for Law School...?"
Girl friend writes Novel makes millions, sends you to law school, you
get rich putting yacht deals together in Italy
live happily ever after. All because of a Gig of RAM a airport card
and a Pismo Pretty good deal
Good luck
Geoff
