It might not be very helpful but maybe reformatting will map out the bad
sector used by that directory.

Re: Best strategy to maintain an iBook battery?

2005-05-17 Thread Gene Osburn
Stanton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wants to know:
What's your best idea of the wisest way to maintain the greatest
functionality of an iBook 500 battery?
Are these batteries damaged by allowing them to become completely
discharged?
Are they damaged by leaving them (in the iBook) connected to the AC adapter
even after they're fully recharged?
--
I just bought a new Lithium-Ion battery for my Wallstreet, and from what
research reading I've done on battery care this is how *I'll* take care
of mine:

1) I won't leave the battery in the 'Book while running on AC adapter
power. Apple recommends against this practice for Li-Ion's in its
PowerBooks.

2) I'll "top up" the charge at least a couple of times per month.
3) I'll "exercise" the battery regularly. Running your 'Book on battery
power at least a couple of times per week is actually good for the battery.

4) I'll calibrate the battery every couple of months. Run on battery
power until 'Book gives the low power warning and goes to sleep. Then
immediately plug in AC adapter and allow the battery to fully recharge.

5) I'll wrap it up and store it in the refrigerator (NOT THE FREEZER!)
whenever I leave it idle for more than a few days at a time.

Lithium-Ion batteries don't like to be completely drained; it shortens
their life.

Re: Wallstreet & Tiger

2005-05-17 Thread Andrew F.
The Wallstreet on Panther is much like the Lombard on Tiger, meaning it is
for the most part compatible, but intentionally restricted only by the
Install program on the CD or DVD. I used the exact same method to install
Tiger on my wife's Lombard and it works great, but the Wallstreet is simply
not Tiger-compatible.

A similar analogy is the Kanga G3 PowerBook, which will not load OSX without
XPostFacto. The Kanga has hardware that just will not run OSX without
XPostFacto adding the necessary drivers to OSX. The Wallstreet has an older
video card than the Lombard or Pismo, not to mention different motherboard
components. One or more of those components, while supported natively with
a driver in Panther, is no longer supported in Tiger.

Panther is the best you will get on a WallStreet until XPostFacto adds Tiger
support for a WallStreet.

Honestly, I'd be happy you got Panther running, many WallStreet owners
aren't able to. I didn't expect Tiger to work on the Lombard, and consider
it entirely a bonus that it does, not an entitlement on a 6-year-old laptop.

Getting it installed and running is the main impediment of
'unsupported' systems.

Once this is accomplished, relative speed on the same system should be
roughly the same for supported and unsupported systems, so yes, it
should run faster.

My Understanding is that you should use the computer on battery power
alone at least infrequently, if not regularly, and you should use the
iBook until the battery is fully discharged. These activities are
actually good for the performance of the battery, and necessary.

"Keyboard&Mouse" missing "Trackpad" on iBook 500 OS 10.3.8. . .

2005-05-17 Thread Stanton Mitrany
I have an iBook 500 with a seemingly defective trackpad, which is running OS
10.3.8. It shows no "Trackpad" category under the "Keyboard & Mouse" control
panel. When I plug a USB mouse in, the "Keyboard & Mouse" panel does display
a category for "Mouse".

Can this indicate that the OS doesn't see the existence of a
(non-functioning?) trackpad, and therefore doesn't display the "Trackpad"
portion of the "Keyboard & Mouse" Control Panel? Or, might it be a problem
with the OS software?

I have a replacement (used and untested) top case with its integral trackpad
which I can install, but I'd like advisement first as to whether this scary
& involved replacement should be my preferred course to trying to regain
trackpad functionality on this machine.

I will be grateful for your input.

All the best,
stanton

Re: Reasons that Appletalk can't be activated?

2005-05-17 Thread Pauline Turtle-Bear Guillermo
First off, I'd recommend going to 10.3.9 - works fine on my Pismo. We
have a fairly similar setup, though the Pismo is retired to occasional
use. We have an old HP4MP connected via iPrint.

Just for trouble shooting's sake, create a new network "location" with
just ethernet (turn off everything else: modem, IR, etc. in
Show->Network Port Configurations) and make sure AppleTalk is active
and then click Apply Now.

In the Application->Utilities folder, open Printer Setup Utility. If
your printer is there, select it and click DELETE in the toolbar. Then
click ADD and in the drop sheet choose "AppleTalk". Hopefully your
Apple printer will show up. Whether the printer shows up in the Printer
Setup Window depends on the drivers installed with the OS. There is an
optional printer driver installer on the Panther install disk that you
may have to try. It installs older stuff (like for my Epson 740).

Good luck - let us know what is happening.

PS. I managed to install Tiger to the iBook G3 via SCSI disk mode: it

That's pretty amazing since no iBook ever came with SCSI ;-) I presume
you mean Firewire disk mode.

Was Panther on the iBook before Tiger? If so, is Tiger slower than
Panther had been?

I'm wondering whether to upgrade some older iMacs currently running
Panther, and I've heard Tiger runs faster than (or at least as fast
as) Panther, so this would be feasible. Once we upgrade, I prefer
that the systems we support (father's, elderly friend's from church)
also be upgraded to the same OS as it makes support over the phone
much easier to do!

Tiger runs noticeably faster on my Pismo than Panther which was
noticeably faster than Jag.

Officially per our campus Apple engineering contact, Tiger should run
faster on supported systems provided you have enough ram. He says 256
is ok if all you want to do is boot it up and have it sit there, but
reasonable use needs 512M.
