Damaged directory

2005-05-18 Thread PETE

There is damage (according to disk first aid) to
the directory of my wallstreet running OS 9.2.2. Disk
First aid cannot fix the problem and neither can Disk
warrior. Anyone out there with a solution to this
dilemma?
TIA.
Pete.

It might not be very helpful but maybe reformatting will map out the bad
sector used by that directory.

Carbon Copy Cloner

2005-05-18 Thread Brian Stewart
Observation...
I use CCC (carbon copy cloner) to backup my powerbook to a firewire
external case. I use image backups because I can fit 3 or 4 backups on
my external drive instead of just one. I backup it up once a week and
have about a month of backup images.

The CCC process was failing with a Bad File Descriptor error. After 2
weeks I figured out the problem. My external hard drive was too full to
create a new image. Instead of saying FULL TARGET DRIVE it gave me
the Bad File Descriptor error.

Just a heads up. I was worried that my powerbook hard drive was
corrupted... and I did not have a recent backup...

1) I won't leave the battery in the 'Book while running on AC

Have you got a cite for this?
I can't see Apple suggesting this and to the best of my

2) I'll top up the charge at least a couple of times per month.
3) I'll exercise the battery regularly. Running your 'Book on
battery power at least a couple of times per week is actually good
for the battery.

4) I'll calibrate the battery every couple of months. Run on
battery power until 'Book gives the low power warning and goes to
sleep. Then immediately plug in AC adapter and allow the battery to
fully recharge.

5) I'll wrap it up and store it in the refrigerator (NOT THE
FREEZER!) whenever I leave it idle for more than a few days at a
time.

shortens their life.

Re: Carbon Copy Cloner

2005-05-18 Thread Harry Corsover
How about another reminder -- ALWAYS run disk utilities on your
backup drives (Disk Utility, DiskWarrior, etc.). While I had been
doing this quite regularly on my internal drive, for some reason I
spaced out doing this on my external backup drive. When the time came
to restore from that backup, I found that it was too corrupted.

Following that, I have become really thorough. Not only do I run
DiskWarrior regularly, but I bought two more external drives, and
rotate them, keeping one off-site at all times.

Seems to me I only need worry about my WS tipping when it's in my lap;
and in that event it's running on battery power, anyway. It's not
nearly so tipsy in desktop use; and I'll prolly have drive modules

15' Wallstreet

2005-05-18 Thread Edward Jackson
Laurent,

I had to customize my Wallstreet (I grew out of the 14 inch screen almost
as fast as the jeans I wore in college). It took some tinkering with the
casing just to get the new screen in (lots of shaving and adding an titanium
strip around the edges that aligns with the new titanium strip on the bottom
panel). Mind you I was simply following the instructions of a friend. I gave
it to him and I don't know how but he managed to get the video card and the
video RAM up to standards enough to push this screen into working order, as
well as maintaining decent backlighting. I'm not sure what else he did but he
does work for Disney and they wish on a lot of stars, so who knows. Either
that or I just hit the '5' key instead of '4'. I'll have to measure. :)

Upgrade my Wallstreet?

2005-05-18 Thread anazario
I have a G3 wallstreet and I would like to bring it more update. I would
like to get it a faster processor (make it as fast as a G4), a bigger hard
drive, a wireless card, a more current OS, a usb port that supports a pen
drive and other peripherals. oh, and the power button is on the fritz
because it take pushing it down real hard to get it going.

I don't want to do this myself. I would like to ship it out and have all
this done. What do these kind of upgrades cost? I know it is cheaper to
buy all the different bits needed and do it myself, but I don't have the
patience. Is it worth it or should I just save up to buy a newer machine?
Can anyone recommend an upgrade service place that is reasonsable and
reliable?

Thanks
Athena Nazario

Kensington and iGo make several adapters and plug ends for your PB.
Also check out the accessories which connect PDAs, cell phones, iPods,

Re: Auto adapter revised

2005-05-18 Thread Kris Tilford
I think the laptop auto adapters are too expensive. It's much cheaper
to buy a small 120v AC inverter than fits your lighter plug that's
larger wattage than your regular wall charger and then use your regular
charger in the car. Sam's Club has 70-watt inverters for $13.24 each.
You can also use other AC devices such as mobile phone chargers or GPS
or iPod, etc.

Re: Auto adapter revised

2005-05-18 Thread Andrew
Inverters work, but are a clunky solution at best. Auto adapters for
laptops are a bit pricey, but are also sleek and compact, and usually have
interchangeable tips so you can use them on your current PowerBook and also
on whatever you might be using next year.

There are also for a bit more $$ universal adapters that work on AC AND DC.
I have the Kensington and leave the car cord in my glove box and carry the
adapter in my PowerBook case with the AC cord attached. This also has
interchangeable tips, so I can also use it with my ThinkPad when I plan on
gaming on the road.
